JOB DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBLE FOR - Contractors, volunteers

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB To assist the Ceredigion Wildlife Trust Officer in the delivery of practical nature
reserve management, including leading volunteer workparties, with due consideration to site management plans, the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 & the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
To represent The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales when working on nature reserves or third party land and at occasional events or meetings
To assist The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales staff in achieving its aims & objectives.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
To assist the Ceredigion Wildlife Trust Officer in the delivery of practical nature reserve management, including leading volunteer workparties, with due consideration to site management plans, the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 & the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
To assist in management and maintenance of nature reserves throughout the county. This will involve delivery of practical work, risk assessment & hazard tree assessment, maintaining safe sites for public/staff access, monitoring of entrances, boundaries,
permissive routes and public rights of way. Where necessary taking corrective actions, removing hazards, making repairs, undertaking litter clearance and reporting problems.
To occasionally work in other counties under the supervision of the appropriate WTO
Ensure adherence to Health & Safety Policy, including but not limited to risk assessment, manual handling, COSHH, PUWER and safeguarding elements.
Ensure all work is undertaken in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant legislation, industry best practice, codes of practice and guidance.
Make full & proper use and take care of all clothing, PPE & safety equipment provided by The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales.
Carry, operate & be responsible for any mobile communication equipment issued.
Assist the Ceredigion Wildlife Trust Officer in delivering conservation and site maintenance objectives according to site management plans and work programmes. To assist with surveys when requested.
To take overall responsibility for work sites and operations when on site without the supervision of a more senior member of Conservation Team staff.
Lead twice weekly volunteer workparties Use and maintenance of power tools including chainsaw, brushcutter To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably requested
appropriate to grade.
To represent The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales when working on nature reserves or third party land and at occasional
events and meetings..
Wear appropriate corporate clothing as issued when working on reserves, third party land, at events or when attending events representing WTSWW.
Be a first point of contact/help with the public and other users when working on WTSWW property representing the Trust in a polite and professional manner.
Maintain open communication and good relations with neighbours, members, partners, the public & other interested parties.
Refer any unresolved queries/problems to Line Manager. Disseminate leaflets & promote the website and local group
activities as appropriate. Promote membership & volunteering opportunities. Occasionally represent WTSWW at events as delivering a variety of
activities supported by other staff as requested by Line Manager, Conservation Managers or Senior Management Team.

Membership recruitment according to organisations targets. Attending occasional events such as shows, or local group events By reducing waste and maximising the use of resources available. Represent WTSWW appropriately when in the local community. Inline with the general “can do” approach taken throughout the
organisation offer assistance to all members of the staff team where possible.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Management and SupervisionResponsible for managing contractors and volunteers.
Accountability and ResourcesThe officer will be required to manage a small amount expenditure and delivery of project
outcomes as directed by the line manager.
Job ImpactThe role is anticipated to deliver some awareness raising outcomes which will create a high impact both internally and externally. In addition, the officer will be responsible for H&S in relation to their work on the nature reserves to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all staff, volunteers and visitors involved.
Independence and JudgementThe officer will report to the Ceredigion WTO and the posts sit within the Conservation Team. An ability to supervise groups of volunteers in remote locations without support
from other staff will form part of the role. Independence, good judgement, excellent teamwork will therefore be crucial.
People and ContactsThe post-holder will have contact with many members of Trust staff and volunteers on a regular basis. It is expected that the post-holder will be building strong links with the local communities which will include people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Other regular contacts will include wider Trust colleagues, partners, suppliers and contractors. The Officer will be expected to represent the Trust with partners, for example to liaise with NRW to secure permissions and consents required for the work plan. An ability to present a professional approach will be very important.
Creativity and InnovationWhilst the work plan will primarily be decided by the Ceredigion WTO, a creative and innovative approach to problem solving will be welcomed.
Working ConditionsThe post holder will preferably be based from a home address in Ceredigion, or the Welsh Wildlife Centre in Cilgerran. The post will be 3.5 days per week (the distribution of days will be discussed with the applicant). The normal pattern of hours is 9.00 am to 5.00 pm but a flexible approach to working hours will be helpful, early morning, evening and weekend work will sometimes be required. Flexitime and TOIL systems are in use
throughout the Trust.

Experience
The post holder should either have appropriate academic/professional/industryqualification or relevant experience to cover the requirements of the post. In this instance, experience/understanding of habitat management and ecological survey skills would be helpful.
Experience of engaging with people of a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Experience of volunteers and providing a positive leadership role.
Competence, knowledge and skills Community/ people engagement Events and activities planning and delivery
Nature reserve management (particularly woodland & marshy grassland management advantageous)
Project management (including contracts and budgets) Knowledge of H&S legislation Experience of working with volunteers Driving licence and own transport Computer literate and familiar with excel, word, power point etc First Aid
Desirable Welsh speaker or learner
Experience of publicity and interpretive writing Brushcutter, pesticides, NPTC chainsaw qualification
