Annual Report 2010-2011

I It is my pleasure to present the James Madison University Athletics 2010-2011 Year in Review. What a twelve months it has been. In that time our program posted five conference championships (most in the Colonial Athletic Conference), guided over 200 different student-athletes to finish a semester with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and graduated our student-athletes at a 12% higher rate than the national average. We are very proud of our years performance on and off the field. Vital to our success is the progress of facility enhancements and financial support. The completion of Bridgeforth Stadium marks the beginning of a new era in JMU Athletics. We are very excited to showcase the finest facility in Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) this fall. We are also excited to report substantial progress on the University Park project. This 85 acre facility will provide varsity fields for mens soccer, womens soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and track & field and is on schedule to open in the fall of 2012. These projects are a powerful tool in recruiting the finest student-athletes, as well as recruiting and retaining first-class coaches. The Duke Club, JMU Athletics fundraising arm,

set an annual record for 8th consecutive year. The 20% increase in private support has increased our ability to offer scholarship support for our student-athletes, and enhance our teams operating budgets. In the end, your support is the backbone of our success. I hope you will take the time to review this report thoroughly and celebrate another great year here at JMU. As we continue our mission to prepare student-athletes for meaningful and successful lives, it seems appropriate to look back and take pride. O On September 11, 2010, the Dukes defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies for the first time in seven attempts, and became the second FCS team to ever beat a ranked opponent. It was a rainy and overcast day, however the Dukes played smart football, not turning the ball over once to Virginia Techs three. The play of the game may have been a 77 yard touchdown scamper by senior running back Jamal Sullivan, who took a swing pass, broke a few tackles and scored with 4:53 remaining in the first half. This huge play gave the Dukes some momentum and confidence, and they outscored the Hokies 14-3 in the second half. Quarterback Drew Dudzik threw a touchdown and ran for two more in the second half while leading the Dukes to a 21-16 victory.

Womens Soccer defeats Texas in NCAA

O On November 12, 2010 the JMU Womens Soccer Team unseated the Texas Longhorns by the score of 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a header by redshirt sophomore Kelly Germain with 27:14 remaining in the first half. Texas had three corner kick opportunities in the last two minutes, however the Dukes defense held strong and maintained its 1-0 lead. Four minutes into the second half, Katie Menzie scored the goal that gave the Dukes an insurmountable 2-0 lead. The Longhorns and Dukes each added a late goal leading to the 3-1 final score. The womens soccer team has now won its last three first-round games in the NCAA Tournament.

ICommunity Service

StrikeOut Cancer WeekendHosted by the softball team, this ninth annual silent auction raised over $3,000 in support of the American Cancer Society. In addition, 4 players combined to

donate over 50 inches of hair to Locks of Love.

Soldiers AngelsMembers of the lacrosse team worked together to give soldiers overseas a taste

of home, sending them handwritten letters, care packages and blankets.

Day with the DukesMany of the JMU athletic programs, including football, mens and womens basketball, soccer, and swimming, work together to provide a day of fun and

sports activities for special olympians.

Read-in DaysJMU student-athletes from various teams travel to local elementary schools to read and answer questions. The Dukes also encourage the children to read, learn

and explore as much as possible.

Boys and Girls Club Volunteer WorkVolunteering with the children of the local Boys and Girls Club was lead by the mens soccer team. The teams work throughout the season landed them the 2011 Community Service Award, with nearly 200 hours of team service hours.

It is important for the Dukes to make an impact both on the field and in the community. This past year JMU student-athletes participated in a wide variety of community service activities. Some of the highlights included:

I It was an outstanding season for JMU on the baseball field. The team won its 2nd CAA Tournament of all time under head Coach Spanky McFarland. The Dukes were led by a potent offense, averaging 8.9 runs per game, the highest in all of the NCAA. This potent offense led the Dukes to an appearance and two victories in the NCAA Tournament. The offense was fueled by two MLB Draft Picks and one free agent pro signee. The first of these pros was Jake Lowery, the CAA Player of the Year. Lowery led the CAA in home runs with 24, which was also a CAA All-Time Record. Lowery also led the nation in RBIs with 91. Lowery went on to win the Johnny Bench Award for national catcher of the year, as well as the National Hitter of the Year by CollegeBaseballInsider.com. He was selected in the 4th round by the Cleveland Indians. Lowery was joined in the pros by shortstop and team captain David Herbek, who was taken in the 15th round by the Chicago White Sox. Herbek was a Second Team All-CAA player and a First Team All-American (NCBWA). Outfield Alex Folts signed as a free agent to the Evansville Otters, after a Third Team All-CAA Season. The Dukes will look to continue their strong CAA play next year led by 3 returning All-CAA players; freshman outfielder Johnny Bladel (2nd Team), freshman utility player Ty McFarland (3rd Team), and junior pitcher Sean Tierney (3rd Team).

Junior Catcher Jake Lowery

Summary

FT The Dukes put together a strong season on the hardwood led by third year coach Matt Brady. The team finished 21-12 overall, and ended up sixth in the CAA with a 10-8 divisional record. On the court, the team was led by forward Denzel Bowels. The senior put together an outstanding season, averaging 17.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, all while shooting 58.1% from the field. All of these averages were in the top 4 of the CAA, and led Bowels to a spot on the First Team All-CAA. He was also a finalist for the JMU Male Athlete of the Year, and became only the fifth player in JMU history to post a 40 point game. Senior Ben Louis also showed a tremendous amount of leadership this season, and was nominated for the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award. Looking forward, the Dukes will look to carry on with a lot of young talent, notably rising junior point gaurd Devon Moore. Moore put together a strong campaign this past season after missing the entire year before due to injury, averaging 11.4 points and 4.2 assist per game. Moore will join up with Julius Wells, Andrey Semenov and Rayshawn Goins to give the Dukes a strong core next season.

For the second consecutive season, the womens basketball team won the CAA Tournament. This came after a 16-2 record in the CAA, and a 26-8 overall record; the 6th consecutive 20 win season for the Dukes. The Dukes also landed a spot in the NCAA Tournament, their third trip under Coach Kenny Brooks. The team was led in the regular and post season by senior guard Dawn Evans, the CAA Player of the Year and the CAA Tournaments Most Outstanding Player. Evans was third in points per game in the country (23.1) and became the all time leading scorer and three-point shooter in JMU and CAA history with 2,667 career points and 387 career three-pointers. She was named the JMU Athlete of the Year and was on the Wooden Award Ballot for national player of the year. Evans was joined on the CAA All-Tournament Team by seniors Courtney Hamner and Lauren Jimenez. Jimenez was also named to the All-CAA Second Team for her regular season efforts. The team next year will look for an increased contribution from rising senior Lauren Whitehurst, who was named to the CAA All-Academic Second Team.

JT The womens cross country team left their mark on the CAA this year, walking away with both team and individual awards. They celebrated their first CAA team championship with five individuals finishing in the top twelve and being named to the All-CAA team including sophomores Stacy Noble, Katie Harman, and Katie Gorman, junior Jess Zozos and senior Alison Parris who finished first place overall. Parris was also named the CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year while head coach David Rinker received the CAA Cross Country Coach of the Year award. With so many strong runners returning, the cross country team looks to continue their success this fall.

JMUs Field Hockey team had another solid season, led by Senior Back Amy Daniel. Daniel put together one of the bests seasons in school history. Unfortunately, a lot of her success came with heartbreak, as the Dukes had 8 one goal loses this season. Despite an unusually large amount of disappointing outcomes, the Dukes fought hard and stayed competitive, and managed a 5th place finish in the CAA. Daniel led the entire CAA in goals with 19, as well as total points with 47. Both of these marks finished as 10th most in school history for a single season, and landed Daniel a spot on the All-CAA First team. Dolores de Rooij also finished her career strong, finishing with the eighth most goals (41) and tenth most points (93) in school history. There is a bright future for the Field Hockey team led by Freshman Midfielder Lise van Dam. Van Dam put together an excellent rookie season, and was named to the CAA All-Rookie team, as well as Second-Team All-CAA honors. She will look to be a leader for the Dukes for years to come.

TT The Dukes started the football season off with a bang, pulling off one of the biggest upsets in all of college football. After blowing out Moorehead State to open their season, they defeated the #13 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies, 21-16, and became only the second FCS team ever to defeat a ranked FBS opponent. They were led to victory against Virginia Tech by All-CAA Second Team running back Jamal Sullivan, who led the team in rushing and receiving, while accounting for 132 total yards and a touchdown. Sullivan was joined on the All-CAA Second Team by offensive tackle Theo Sherman and offensive guard Roane Babington. The Dukes truly excelled on defense, finishing as top 10 overall unit in the FCS and held their opponents to an average of 13.5 points per game. The unit was lead by All-CAA First Team defensive tackle Ronnell Brown, and All-CAA Third Team linebacker Stephon Robertson. While the defense was very strong most of the year, the Dukes offensively were very young and inconsistent. They finished the year with a 3-5 record in the CAA and an 8th place finish. They will look to improve on that mark next year, and it seems very likely. Coach Mickey Matthews will have 8 of 11 starters returning on offense, and 10 of 11 returning on defense.

The Womens Lacrosse team had a great season, winning its 8th CAA Championship in school history, after a 6-1 regular season in the CAA. The team finished the year ranked 11th in the nation by the IWLCA, after reaching the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The team was led by All-CAA First Team players Casey Ancarrow and Mary Kate Lomady. Lomady was also named to the CAA All-Tournament Team for her performance, and finished her career ranked 9th in points scored in JMU history. Ancarrow was named to two All-America teams, and was nominated for the Tewaaraton Trophy, for national player of the year. They were joined by Annie Brophy and Cally Chakrian as top performers, who both recieved All-CAA Second Team honors. The lacrosse team also had two finalists in the JMU Scholar Athlete of the Year award; Kim Griffin and Morgan Kelly. The team will look to compete for its third straight CAA title in 2012, led by Casey Ancarrow and the other returning starters.

IJ JMU Mens Golf celebrated its first overall tournament victory this year under Coach Jeff Forbes. The tournament victory came in Williamsburg, VA at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate Tournament. The individual winner was sophomore Second-Team All-CAA golfer Ryan Vince. Vince defeated teammate Chris Wellde in the third playoff hole to claim the individual victory and to lead the Dukes to a first place finish in the field of 24. Vince finished a career best three under par. The Dukes also had a chance to showcase their resilience in the CAA tournament. First round co-leader, junior Chad Mozingo, was injured and forced to withdraw from the tournament in the second round. This left the Dukes shorthanded with only four golfers for the remainder of the tournament. This did not deter the Dukes, however, as they were still able to manage an impressive 4th place finish in the field of 11 schools. Next year is full of promise for the JMU mens golf team, as the team will be returning all seven of its current players.

It was a solid season for the womens golf team, who placed 4th in the CAA Tournament. The Dukes were led by junior Nicole Sakamoto and freshman Ginger Mak, who were both named to the CAA All-Tournament Team. Ginger Mak put together an extremely impressive freshman campaign, leading JMU with a 76.3 scoring average. She also led the Dukes in top-20 finishes on the year, with three. Her outstanding play led to her being named the CAA Rookie of the Year, as well as First-Team All-CAA honors. Nicole Sakamoto also had a very good season, securing the Dukes their only two top-10 individual performances of the year, including a second place finish at the CAA Tournament. She finished the year with a 77.0 scoring average, and was a Second-Team All-CAA golfer. Both Mak and Sakamoto will be returning next season, looking to improve upon a very promising first season as teammates.

II It was a hard fought season for the mens soccer team this year, playing in one of the most competitive soccer conferences in the nation. The Dukes finished with a 4-6-1 record in the CAA, good for an 8th place conference finish. The team still had many bright spots, most notably senior forward CJ Sapong, the Second Team All-American according to College Soccer News. Sapong led the CAA in points (33) and assists (9) en route to CAA Player of the Year honors. The four year starter was also named the JMU Athlete of the Year. He went on to be selected 10th overall by Sporting Kansas City in the 2011 MLS Superdraft. CJ Sapong was also named to his 4th All-CAA First Team, the first Duke to ever receive that honor four times. Sophomore forward Paul Wyatt also had a very successful season, and was named to the All-CAA Second Team. Wyatt and Steven Mashinski, the teams Rookie of the Year, will look to lead the Dukes next season.

It was another successful season for the womens soccer program. They made the CAA Tournament for the 11th consecutive season, the only team to do so every season since the CAA limited the tournament to four or six teams. The Dukes, led by All-CAA First Team players Jessica Brandt, Teresa Rynier, and Diane Wszalek were able to defeat Hofstra and win the CAA Championship. Diane Wszalek was also named the CAA Tournaments Most Outstanding Player for her outstanding goalkeeping. Teresa Rynier had an incredible season, leading the CAA in total points (31) and assists (13). She also set a CAA record for career assists with 53. She became the first JMU womens soccer player to be drafted to the WPSL, as the 23rd overall pick to the Philadelphia Independence. Cate Tisinger and Corinna Strickland each had productive seasons as well, as they were named to the All-CAA Second Team and All-CAA Third Team, respectively. The womens soccer program has a bright future, with Becky Sparks and Lauren Wilson, who were both named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

TI It was a historic year for the Dukes on the softball field. Shortstop Ashley Burnham broke a single-season school record for home runs with 13, eclipsing the previous mark of 10. Burnham also started all 160 games of her career, setting the JMU record for consecutive games started. Joining her in the record books was outfielder Chelsea Ryan, who set a single-season record for stolen bases with 22. The team was lead by Burnham and 3rd Basemen Caitlin Sandy, both representing the Dukes on the All-CAA First Team. Sandy was also named to the CAA All-Rookie team. Outfielder Jasmine Butler landed a spot on the All-CAA Second Team, after becoming only the second player in school history to reach 100 career hits as a sophomore. However, the team was plagued by injuries throughout the season, mostly to the pitching staff. The Dukes finished 5th in the CAA, but they failed to qualify for the conference tournament. The team will be looking to build upon its young talent and make a run at the CAA title next season.

The Dukes had a great year in the pool, finishing 2nd in the CAA Championships, the 4th year in a row they have improved. They also finished the year ranked as the #4 mid-major in the nation by collegeswimming.com. They were lead by Coach Becky Benson, who was named the CAA Diving Coach of the Year. The team had two individuals win championships at the CAA, Nichole Jotso (3-meter dive), and Eva Hannesdottir (100 freestyle). The team also had six All-CAA swimmers; Jotso, Hannesdottir, Andrea Criscuolo, Carly Gibson, Jessie Everett, and Kimberly Helfrich. Sophomore Kimberly Helfrich had an incredible season en route to recieving CAA Diver of the Year honors. She will look to lead to Dukes next year to a 5th straight improvement in the CAA Tournament; a CAA Championship.

T The JMU mens tennis team achieved a winning record for the 2010-2011 season. A strong conference season grabbed them the sixth seed for the CAA championship tournament. A tough CAA quarterfinal battle against UNC Wilmington ended their season but accolades were still to come. This began with sophomore Greg Vladimirsky receiving a Second Team All-CAA singles selection. Vladimirsky was joined by junior Betrand Moulin to accept their Second Team All-CAA Doubles selection. As a pair, they went 7-0 as No. 1 doubles during the season. The duo had also garnered CAA Doubles Team of the week selection twice, earlier in the season. The 2011-2012 year looks promising for the Dukes as both competitors return, along with key sophomore Florent Sentenac.

Womens tennis completed another successful season, highlighted by Coach Maria Malerbas 400th career win. Led by 3rd team All-CAA singles player, Kinsey Pate, the JMU womens tennis teamed paved their way past Hofstra in the first round of the CAA tournament to make it to the CAA quarterfinal. Despite falling to VCU, the Dukes celebrated their success by naming freshman, Jacqueline Palmucci as the team MVP and giving sophomore Michelle Nguyen the team Coachs Award. The Dukes look to further their success this year with Pate, Palmucci, Nguyen, and Junior Megan Douglas leading the squad. Malerbas strength and experience will continue to be a guiding force for these Dukes as they compete in the CAA.

IT Track and field ended they year with another successful season led by senior star, Alison Parris. They grabbed a fourth place finish at the CAA championship, their best in three years. The competition did not end their though. They continued their success with fourteen athletes competing in the ECAC championship. Senior Alison Parris also participated in the NCAA Track and Field Preliminary Meet along with sophomores, Marissa McDonald and Katie Harman. Track and field will look for another triumphant season this spring with many experienced competitors back for another season.

It was an excellent season for the Volleyball team led by first year Head Coach Lauren Steinbrecher. She lead the Dukes to a 22-8 overall record, and a 2nd place finish in the CAA. The Dukes made the 6th best turnaround in the country from the year before, with an increase in wins by 11, and Steinbrecher was named CAA Co-Coach of the Year as well as the VaSID State Coach of the Year. Putting an end to a great career at JMU was senior Lindsay Callahan. She put together another huge season, and was named to the All-CAA First Team. She finished second in attack attempts (3,942), third in kills (1,354), fourth in sets played (454), and eighth in digs (978) in school history. She was also named a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American. The team looks to continue improving and has a bright future under Coach Steinbrecher, lead by an assortment of talent. Danielle Erb (Second-Team All-CAA), Natalie Abel (Third-Team All-CAA) and Katie Daorai (CAA All-Rookie Team) will look to lead the dukes to a CAA Championship next season.

Bridgeforth Stadium Completion

T The Campaign for Bridgeforth Stadium concluded in August with over $6.1M in funds raised. Forty-one donors made gifts in excess of $25,000 to the project, making it the largest fundraising effort in JMU Athletics history. The completed stadium has 25,000 seats, 17 luxury suites, an 8,000 square foot club lounge connected to 1,006 premium club seats, and a state-of-the-art press box. The improved sightlines are matched only by the upper decks beautiful views of the JMU campus and the Shenandoah Valley.

University Park Nearing Completion

T The University Park project is less than a year away from being completed. The $43.9 million dollar facility will provide new game and practice fields for mens and womens soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse. Track & Field will also move to the site on a new synthetic surface. Over-all the facility includes five fields (two artificial) for JMU Athletics teams. Additionally, University Park will host recreational opportunities for JMU students, including basketball, sand volleyball, a fitness trail, tennis, disc golf and green space.

T The Duke Club, operating through the JMU Foundation, is the only athletics fundraising organization recognized by the university. The Duke Club raises unrestricted contributions through its annual membership fund drive in support of student-athlete scholarships and the general

operating budget.

I In January 2011 the Duke Club launched a membership drive titled Duke Dog Pride. The push is focused on adding 2,011 new members in 2011. In the last five years, the Duke Club has experienced tremendous financial growth. However, membership has been relatively stagnant. It is a surprising trend given the deep passion of our fan base and supporters. Duke Dog Pride is about turning those feelings into resources for success. Ultimately, it is about growing our membership to create a better foundation of support, which in

turn leads to success on and off the field for JMU. Our mantra is simple:

Pride in Who ArePride in Where Weve BeenPride in Where Were Going

Proud to Do My Part

So far this year we have added over 950 members who were not members the previous year. Given the many Duke Club memberships that typically renew in the fall, total 2011 membership could surpass 4,000.
