What does getting ready for the holidays mean to you? It’s easy to get caught
up in what the stores tell us we should buy or what Martha Stewart tells us we
should cook, bake and create to entertain our guests. Every family has a set of
traditions and I feel privileged when I see pictures on Facebook of our members
sharing their family traditions-- shopping with the girls, ornament of the day, bak-
ing extravaganzas and Christmas plays. While the reason for the season is giving
of yourself to others, I urge you to be just a little bit selfish this holiday season.
Make YOU and your loved ones a priority. Take time to savor the little moments
that you have with family and friends. Really sit back and soak it all in. Be pre-
sent! The kids won’t always want to visit Santa, everyone won’t always be in the
same state on Christmas Day, and the fluffy snow won’t always be there to coat
the ground while you’re warm inside singing Christmas carols. I guarantee these
memories will be remembered long after the presents and decorations have all
been put away.
As trained volunteers, I believe our natural instinct is to worry about everything
being just perfect and going smoothly. I am completely guilty; tuning in to the
tiniest of details. It’s no different at Christmas- the decorations, the baking, the
gift wrapping...… However, I’m trying to practice what I preach this year. My
boyfriend, John, hung all the ornaments on the tree and I didn’t rearrange any
of them! I gift wrapped with my co-workers at the mall and didn’t hover while
the men from our office fumbled with their pieces of tape. I also will let my sister
make a complete mess of my kitchen when we have our annual baking day. It’s
been fun and I feel like I’ve learned more about the people around me just by
taking that step back.
So I hope you emerge from this holiday season feeling reconnected with those
around you and energized to start a brand new year! I appreciate all that you
do for The Junior League of Youngstown in the way of support, guidance, and
friendship. I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Kelly

BRIEFLY SPEAKING
By Sharon Velasquez, Sustainer Rep to the Marketing Commiee
One chapter in the story of the Junior League of Youngstown is coming to an end, as the league will no longer host an
Angel Ball in December.
Following a sustainer survey and a reluctant recommendation by the JL Sustainer Board in October, the JLY membership
will vote to remove Angel Ball verbiage from the bylaws.
The event just seemed to have lived past its time. JLY Angel Ball commiees in the new millennium experienced
difficulty in aracting angels and honorees to participate. In addition, a large portion of the JLY membership was not
aending the event, solely the members with children participating and their families and friends. With rising food
costs, the per person ticket price needed to be $65 to $75 per person to break even.
First Angel Ball
JLY’s first Angel Ball was held in 1960 at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown, with 300 members and husbands
aending to honor nine membersʹ daughters at the Youngstown Country Club. The Social Commiee, headed
by Glo Jones, handled the arrangements. Their working capital included tickets at $15 per couple and a $40 assessment
for each Angel, according to the JLY’s 50th Anniversary book. The early galas were debutant balls aimed at honoring
young women who graduated from high school and served as an introduction into society and their commitment to
future JLY membership. Angels were often escorted by other JLY members’ sons.
JLY records state, in 1962, there was a “calamity” in JLY Vice President Nancy Morrisʹ basement. The life-sized angels,
stored there for the Angel Ball, “scared the wits out of her cleaning lady.”
In 1963, the Social Commiee took over
the event and sold tickets for $17.50 a
couple. The Angel Ball was proudly
hosted each December and it proved to
be the gala event of the Youngstown
holiday season.
Participation Wanes
In 2000, the Angel Ball was canceled for
the first time due to a lack of
aendees. It was at that time that the
policies were changed to include male
honorees. Additional changes were:
to host the Ball every other year rather
than yearly, expand the age of the par-
ticipants in the hopes that high school
students might be in ʹprom modeʹ and
more likely to aend than returning col-
lege students, and include membersʹ
relatives rather than just children as
aendees.
ERA OF ANGEL BALL COMES TO CLOSE

Last Angel Ball
The last Angel Ball was held on Dec. 26,
2009, at The Lake Club in Poland with sev-
en angels, four male honorees and 175
guests in aendance at the gala, chaired by
Annee Camacci and Ingrid Lundquist.
Each of the young women wore a tradition-
al white ball gown with white gloves and
carried a nosegay of lavender roses tied
with pewter satin ribbon. The angels
walEed the first dance with their fathers,
while the male honorees danced with their
mothers. Following the formal presenta-
tion, a sit down dinner feted the angels,
honorees, their families and invited guests.
The menu included Lake Club Salad, a duet
plate of filet mignon and rolled chicken
breast stuffed with spinach drizzled with
red pepper cream sauce, wild rice, French
green beans and pecan balls with fudge.
Hors d’hoeuvres of spanikopeta, stuffed
mushrooms and water chestnuts wrapped in bacon were butlered during cocktail hour. The invocation was given by
Rev. Dr. Charles J. Lundquist, grandfather of angel Bria Carson. The tables, appointed in earth tone dressings of ivory
linens and chocolate brown runners, were accented with centerpieces of glass compote bowls or a trio of glass vases with
floating candles, under a bed of lavender rose pedals and votive candles. The large rectangular king’s table at the center
of the room, where the angels and honorees and their escorts and dates were seated, was adorned with groupings of
ivory candles atop ivory candle sticks encrusted with pearls and vases holding the angels’ nosegays, all set on a back-
ground of lavender rose pedals and votive candles.
Evergreen trees glazed in white twinkle lights graced the room, along with large wreaths of holly and greenery tied with
copper bows. From the banquet room view, a backdrop of the Club’s scenic grounds displayed its large tree decorated in
multicolored lights and red velvet bows, accentuated by a white-light garland stairway. At the conclusion of dinner, the
angels and their escorts, as well as the honorees and their dates, participated in an introductory dance. Musical enter-
tainment was provided by Back Beat Band.
2011 and 2013
In 2011 and 2013, commiees were formed to plan An-
gel Balls, however the events were halted when 12 angels or
honorees did not commit to participating.
New Event to Come!
The purpose of the Angel Ball was to honor members’ chil-
dren, who were at least juniors or seniors in high school, for
their commitment to community service.
In October, the Sustainer Council recommended the creation
of a new event that honors members’ children and encour-
ages them to continue community service. A sustainer com-
miee will be formed. Those interested in serving on this
commiee should contact Janice Tarie at jta[email protected].

session.
JLY Holiday Social will follow the orientation on Tuesday, December 9. Lo-cation TBD.
Volunteer Sign-Ups & Timeline: Beth Drennen discussed that signupgeni-
us.com will be used for the volunteer sign-ups. At least one JLY member will need to be at each session. The first session will be January 6, 2015. Akron
Children’s Hospital will provide teen volunteers. The link to sign-up will be
emailed to members on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. The deadline to
sign-up will be December 5, 2014.
Kim Urig referenced the easy snacks/recipes to be demonstrated at the
sessions and encouraged all members present (at the GMM) to sample the
tasty treats. The concept is to introduce those present at the sessions that cooking does not have to be difficult and is much healthier and more af-
