A MESSAGE FROM THE HON TONY BURKE MP

From the moment I was told about the Boomerang Festival at this year’s Bluesfest, I have been looking forward to coming back to Byron to hear some of the best Indigenous music and therefore some of the best music in Australia. The line-up cuts through from artists such as Archie Roach, who has been well known for years, to the internationallyrenowned Gurrumul. The constant development of the artists at this festival is at the cutting edge of creativity. The recent album of Shellie Morris blend-ing the music of ancient song lines with modern riffs provides us with art and energy that is uniquely and distinctively music of this land. The inspiration of Peter Noble and Rhoda Roberts will be a lasting legacy for theAustralian music scene, and in years to come, we will all be saying that we were at the first Boomerang Festival.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HON DON PAGE MPWelcome to the Boomerang Festival. This is an exciting new event forthis region and I am confident it will grow to become a premier festival inAustralia. I am very proud of our Bundjalung heritage and I know Rhodaand Peter are looking forward to sharing it with you. The line-up for theBoomerang Festival looks amazing. Not only will it be a taste of differentmusic styles from around the world, it will be an educational event – achance for us to see, hear and learn about different indigenous cultures –their people and their music. It’s also a great opportunity to showcase ourAboriginal heritage with Archie Roach, Gurrumul and the Chooky Dancersfrom Elcho Island off the coast of Arnhem Land. For three days you will be treated to incredible music and entertainment celebrating world music and global cultures. Dance, laugh and sit back and relax to the beat and rhythms from countries including New Zealand, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Chile and East Timor.I am confident the Boomerang Festival will grow to become one of the most popular events on the festival calendar in Australia, and internationally. I know you will enjoy yourself here. Thank you for supporting this festival. I am sure this will be one of the highlights of 2013. Have a fantastic time.

A MESSAGE FROM RHODA ROBERTS FESTIVAL CURATOR & DIRECTOR

As a Widjabul woman I acknowledge our Arakwal custodians and feelhonoured we are able to continue the ways of the old ancient gatheringsin a new era here on the Bundjalung homelands.Like many of you I have witnessed the fostering and explosion of music, dance and cultural exchanges acrossmany festivals. It is a joy and incredibly humbling to have one of our most pres-tigious events, the Bluesfestopen their arms and embrace Boomerang offering us a permanent home annually. Peter Noble’s personal passion, desire and financial support along with histeam’s tireless work has resulted in a festival that celebrates not only culture across all genres and ages but is commit-ted to honouring protocol and sharing the deep intellectual strength of Abo-riginal knowledge from across Australia and that of other first peoples across the globe. On a personal note, the relationship with landscape country and kin is the keystone to developing broader under-standing and tolerance. Many of our performers, knowledge keepers and elders represent the clans of the Bund-jalung. Come and meet our mob in the Bundjalung Way.

Experience the profound, the mesmer-ising and side by side we will witness something that is so uniquelyAustralian.

A MESSAGE FROM PETER NOBLE

We pay our deepest respects to the Arakwal as we acknowledge their strong commitment to custodianship and the Bundjalung gener-osity of Spirit.Over the years we have listened andlearned from Indigenous artists and heard their desires to have a specific world class event promoting some of the finest cultural keepers and performers around the Globe. The time is right for Boomerang. It’s a time to create a very specific vehicle for our own personal wishes and the nationsdesire for Reconciliation, through a thoughtful and more tangibleexperience under the curatorial of Rhoda Roberts. Including workshops, conversa-tions, ideas, music, comedy, film, theatreand dance, we know you will be as excited as we are about our inaugural program. Boomerang Festival is for all Australians and our team, volunteers and media part-ners are thrilled to be continuing some of the longterm relationships we established with our first nations artists at Bluesfest over its 25-year history. It’s a time for us to pay homage and our respect to the late Dr. Yunupingu who wowed audienceswith Yothu Yindi at Bluesfest - our sister festival - in 2003 and 2006. It was a time we saw the shifting sands of music and the many collaborations musicians de-velop who were and are simplycolour blind. It’s this collaborative ap-proach that is highlighted and continues with many of our artists working together, including Gurrumul, David Bridie with Frank Yamma and the concert seriesWantok plus many more.So lets experience together what has sustained the worlds oldestliving culture, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia and welcome other world cultures to this extraordinary event.

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR SIMON RICHARDSON BYRON SHIRE COUNCIL

The agreement was the first of its typebetween a local council and native title applicants in New South Wales.Whilst you are here, enjoy and immerse yourself in the weekend’s celebrations; take the opportunityto learn about traditions and cultural identity. Explore our iconic beaches, eclectic villages andtowns; sample our magnificent local produce at our cafes and restaurants.
