Initial Vision for GEM1. Increase diversity of U.S. germplasm used by

growers, end-users and consumers2. Develop process to enhance exotic germplasm for

U.S. Corn Belt use3. Provide process for improving access to improved,

diverse germplasm to all stakeholders4. Add to support of public corn research

Additional Value Today1. Increased level of collaboration among and within public and

private sectors for corn improvement 21 Public Cooperators 1 Non-governmental Organization 26 Private Cooperators 11 International Private Cooperators 5 International Public cooperators

All collaborating together to push forward a long-term project that no single organization or company could do alone above its immediate market needs

Additional Value Today1. Increased level of collaboration …

2. Wider source of germplasm than initial LAMP materials with more international cooperators

Grown from initially 51 LAMP accessions and 7 tropical hybrids to a wide range of exotic germplasm provided by numerous international public and private cooperators

Proprietary germplasm from more than 40 private developers has been used in crosses with the above materials to create approximately 600 breeding crosses that are now part of the GEM Project

Additional Value Today1. Increased level of collaboration …

2. Wider source of germplasm …

3. Increased opportunities to train plant breeders and those in related plant science areas

As of March 2012, graduate students in plant breeding and related fields at six universities have either completed or were conducting 32 M.S. and 45 Ph.D. thesis projects in GEM-related/sponsored research.

Undergraduate students at Truman State are doing germplasm research projects on value-added traits.

GEM is clearly providing a foundation for future plant scientists in this critical field.

Additional Value Today1. Increased level of collaboration …

2. Wider source of germplasm …

3. Increased opportunities to train …

4. Flattened the world for access to germplasm, technology, and information

258 GEM releases are now available to Cooperators that they in turn can use to add diversity to their breeding programs

Information on breeding methodology, pathology, entomology, grain quality, and allelic diversity are being made available to all cooperators and the public on a scale that would otherwise not be available or possible with the efforts of any single organization

Effective and sustained increase of the genetic diversity of the US corn

germplasm base is a long, continuous, and costly path. We will

only achieve this goal by working together.

US GEM is very necessary.
