JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 1 ST , 2018 RACE #1 BANNON 8 GOLD STING - BEST BET 9 FIRST VICTORY 6 KUCHEROV 7 FERNANDO THE BULL LILLZ NOT CRYING has tried the turf repeatedly and two starts ago was third for $15,000 traveling just a bit farther and hanging near the end when, Atlantic Crossing, was better in second. SOUL N’ SPIRIT has been on turf for three races this season and her best result came at Fort Erie in the spring time. ATLANTIC CROSSING had a good result the last time he was on turf July 28 th when second one position better than, Lillz Not Crying; he has kept up his positive fringe form with a subsequent try on Tapeta for $25,000; the blinkers are back on. APATOW has underachieved given his significant pedigree; he now switches to the stable of Ashlee Brnjas; he competed on turf this winter at Gulfstream at higher levels with fringe prizes after speed contributions. HAZY DAVY gave away so much in the opening furlongs of a Tapeta route August 18 th at a low level that he was not competitive. KUCHEROV is bred for turf and gets his first run on the grass; he gets to drop substantially and he brings speed to the event. FERNANDO THE BULL also brings speed to this event along with, Kucherov, and his opener featured an intense pace; the leaders and chasers paid the price and all finished out of the money as closers dominated. GOLD STING was given a rather harsh challenge August 12 th to go in his first route race and while he kept trying that group was beyond him and he slipped back to fourth; in this more likely situation at a sprint on turf Simon Husbands is brought back aboard after a one race absence by Martin Hinckson FIRST VICTORY was overwhelmed in his debut by a key winner; he was unplaced on turf last time and will compete here only if this event goes on Tapeta; he will compete at a lower level than before. RACE #2 BANNON 7 HOMEFORTHEWEEKEND 2 BENS LAST CALL 1 FIVE MORE MINUTES 8 CAMP NARDO FIVE MORE MINUTES competed in the same opener as several others in here and was mired down along the inside pursuing the pace and he finished fourth beaten just a couple of lengths when, Bens Last Call, was third; he has drawn the rail again and now stretches to seven furlongs. BENS LAST CALL debuted at long odds August 11 th and the first part of the event was dedicated to rating him back and near the end he advanced and finished third which would seem to be good preparations for traveling seven furlongs here. LUCAS N’ LORI a debut runner by, Exhi, a stamina source, is from a stakes placed dam and will travel seven furlongs at first asking; he was rallying in his work August 26 th in 1.02bg getting ready for Kevin Attard. DRAXHALL debuted August 11 th and was last in the run down the backstretch and was finally sixth without threatening and now goes farther. WILEY O’RIELLY a debut runner for Earl Barnett is from a dam who produced the recent winner, Airy Fairy, and also the quick local winner, Boreal Spirit; he will travel seven furlongs at first asking with Garcia and worked recently at a half mile in 48. PAY FOR PEACE debuted lasix free at long odds and showed little; for this second start he now stretches out which should play to his training moves and he also adds lasix at this juncture. HOMEFORTHEWEEKEND had an excusable journey in his debut which came in a middle claiming event and he finished third; both the runner up, Groundhog Day, and the fourth place finisher, Rapid Beat, have come back to win smartly; he must travel an extra furlong and a half here. CAMP NARDO debuted August 18 th against several of these and made a four wide looping move on the outside as if he would threaten but he went flat and now he goes farther with blinkers on. RACE #3 BANNON 2 COUSIN CLAIRE 5 KASUGA 6 DELAMAR 3 WILL SHE VEAISHA has changed her running style to come from off the pace and she moved prematurely last time in a race that came off turf and settled for third; she is a two time winner on turf. COUSIN CLAIRE handled the turf well when she came here from Florida May 20 th and she was third beaten just a length with, Will She, in second; most recently, she didn’t react as well on a turf that was more firm; she finished third against a key winner who has already gone on to win again most recently in the Royal North; she gets just six furlongs and will have to hustle. WILL SHE typically gets in a speed duel and is without a win in the past year; she started this season in strong fashion with a runner up finish just one position in front of, Cousin Claire; she has faltered in recent events including a start in the Royal North. MISS SAVVY is yet one of several speed runners in the race and she will be experimenting with turf here after two recent faltering performances on Tapeta. KASUGA is probably the fastest of the early speed types but she is winless this year with that style; she came close in the spring time but most recently in the Royal North gave away five lengths from the top of the stretch home. DELAMAR is an improving three year old who comes off the shelf after a stakes run in January at Gulfstream where she did well to be on the edges even though she was favoured; she has had an extended series of works getting ready to tackle some older rivals here. GWENDOLINE H likes to pepper the pace and typically makes her move in the middle stages; she attracted a claim when dropped back down for $32,000 last time and now goes for Bruno Schickedanz with Kimura aboard; she likes turf. VEIL will compete only if this event comes off turf and she has won two in a row on Tapeta but she meets some in here who are also versed on Tapeta.

RACE #1 BANNON 8 GOLD STING - BEST BET 9 FIRST VICTORY 6 KUCHEROV 7 FERNANDO THE BULL LILLZ NOT CRYING has tried the turf repeatedly and two starts ago was third for $15,000 traveling just a bit farther and hanging near the end when, Atlantic Crossing, was better in second. BENS LAST CALL debuted at long odds August 11th and the first part of the event was dedicated to rating him back and near the end he advanced and finished third which would seem to be good preparations for traveling seven furlongs here.

LUCAS N’ LORI a debut runner by, Exhi, a stamina source, is from a stakes placed dam and will travel seven furlongs at first asking; he was rallying in his work August 26th in 1.02bg getting ready for Kevin Attard. DRAXHALL debuted August 11th and was last in the run down the backstretch and was finally sixth without threatening and now goes farther. RACE #4 BANNON 7 FORT WISE TREATY 1 DECISIONSDECISIONS 5 OUR VICTOR 6 BAKERSFIELD

DECISIONSDECISIONS looks like a contender here; he has developed some hanging tendencies and so was ridden from off the pace last time but again hung deep in the stretch in what was a key race from which the winner has come back to be second in the Play The King and the runner up has come back to win; he departs turf and goes to Tapeta with a drop for $20,000 in this third race in her comeback. DOT’S VISION got down to the $20,000 mark two starts ago to win and he ran willingly last time but the winner dominated and he settled for third with, Chiricahua Signal, second. CHIRICAHUA SIGNAL competed last time on turf and the winner was so dominant that he was left behind in second beaten six lengths; he now goes back to Tapeta. WHERE’S ANTHONY ran a good race in the Bold Ruckus but that gained him no recognition last time and he was eleventh; on his best day he can produce a rally as he did in April at a short distance. OUR VICTOR ran better than most expected August 12th for James B. Ogilvie in his first race in almost a year; he was up to a protected level and he was sent off at long odds; he changed his running style because of the slow early pace and battle the eventual runner up but both were taken down by the winner and he was finally third; he drops for $19,000 here. BAKERSFIELD has dedicated himself to turf in back to back races and dropped down last time as the favourite but it was an intense pace and he was caught desperately late; both the third and seventh place finishers have come back to win; he goes to Tapeta to use his speed. FORT WISE TREATY returned from a layoff June 2nd but didn’t seem engaged; most recently August 12th he sagged in mid stretch; perhaps he got enough from that race to be more complete here. WATER POLO attracted a claim when dropped in for $20,000 last time and he took his best shot and gave up the lead late to, Dot’s Vision, and was third. LOWI VENE has been at lower levels and had a runner up finish last time against a faltering late pace. BIG BLACK STORM responded outside to win last time while drifting in slow time against non winners of two for $19,000. GET MY GIST was racing along the rail on turf last time when the fourth place finisher came abruptly into his path and interfered with him; he finally finished sixth beaten twelfth and had an excuse; he may wake up on Tapeta. TINKER RING was game all the way but for just $10,000 and at a route last time when narrowly beaten.

RACE #5 BANNON 5 TIMBERLINE 4 CAPE MIST 1 MISS FORESTER 6 COURT CENTRAL

MISS FORESTER ran strongly for $12,500 on turf here at six furlongs two starts ago to be a tight third in a race that qualifies her; she came back August 21st to contest a feature race at Fort Erie for those who had already started twice at that meeting; she finished third on dirt behind two runners from Fort Erie who were coming off victories; she travels a mile. ALILACTION was at a mile August 3rd on turf and didn’t threaten against several who are in here; she is a four time winner on turf. ARCH TIGRESS now competes for Robert Neumann who is substituting for Ralph Biamonte; she ran competitively in late July despite being pinched early and then hanging in the stretch when just on the edges. CAPE MIST had the race set up nicely for her at a mile last time as the early pace was much too fast and she had the right resources at the right time in the stretch to win with a rally against some of these including, Timberline. TIMBERLINE got first run at the lead August 3rd when the late pace began to sag and she got the lead but, Cape Mist, went by her; she remains a factor. COURT CENTRAL has been dedicated to turf and had some good rallies on the grass in Florida; she was brought here July 25th to try two turns on Tapeta where she was rank in the early going and fourth finally at 6-5 and she attracted a claim by, Jesse Korona; she has been seeking an appropriate spot and comes in at the same price after time off; she moves to turf. PRETTY TWO FACED takes the big drop on the quick comeback; she was beaten only five lengths on Tapeta last time for $16,000. TALLIEVISION had an excusable journey deep in the stretch last time when space was at a premium and she finally finished third beaten two and a half lengths with, Cape Mist, in front and, Timberline, second. THALIAS FIRE was inconvenienced by the slow early pace last time at a mile on turf but finished an ok third; she now tumbles in for $9,500. MISSY CRISSY was well positioned by Ryan to take advantage of the quickening middle pace last time and she carried that prominent position all the way through the stretch for $9,500 for her third lifetime win; she now goes to turf. PECHE MOBILEE will compete only if this event comes off the turn; she is winless in recent campaigns and seeking her initial share of this season.

RACE #6 BANNON 2 TEMPO SEEKER 5 JAIL TIME 7 TRUST IN SILVER 1 I’SE DUBAI

I’SE DUBAI goes for the productive stable of Steve Attard; he entered here in the spring but was forced to scratch and will now make his way back for this first start since last December and plunge in for only $10,000; he indicates regular preps during August getting ready. TEMPO SEEKER attracted a claim by Bruno Schickedanz March 25th at Oaklawn Park when disappointing as the favourite and just now is getting back into action for new trainer Norm McKnight; he indicates works through July and August getting set and Hernandez is aboard; he now competes as a gelding. FLASHY TRIAL checked sharply on the backstretch and was eliminated last time in a turf event; he now goes to Tapeta. MARSELAN came off the shelf at a protected level July 20th and was about six lengths behind; he remained on turf for the drop in value last time but was again about six lengths back. JAIL TIME has developed a habit of giving it away in the stretch and that was the case again last time for $16,000 when he dropped down and hung the last part of it; perhaps for $10,000 he can be more complete. HARDY CHUCKLE debuted August 12th for $16,000 and was fifth beaten eighteen lengths at long odds when, Jail Time, was third; he comes down in value. TRUST IN SILVER a homebred for Paul Mouttet by, Badge Of Silver, will go here for just $10,000 for Sid Attard and he has been prepping through July and August getting ready and Campbell will have the mount here at this low level. CRIME WAVE was out of the money on turf last time for $32,000 and now comes back at a reduced evaluation on Tapeta; he had a useful run for $20,000 on Tapeta back in July. CHEROKEE KNIGHT got in against a dominant runaway favourite last time and finished sixth; he gets a little more room in this spot.

RACE #7 BANNON 7 AMEN ALLEY 1 JOE CLOCKER 9 MR O’PRADO 5 CLASSIC DANIEL

JOE CLOCKER has run well in both races for Sid Attard and was hustled to a win last time for maiden $16,000 at six furlongs; he attracted a claim by Robert Tiller and will now go to the $20,000 mark and discover grass; his dam has produced two turf winners. GOLDEN EXCHANGE took the big drop and got the best result August 17th as he cut back in distance and got a stalking position and rallied best under Moran; he is back up in value here. PLEASANT EMPIRE was pulled up shortly out of the gate April 29th; he has had a series of returning works getting ready for this comeback which comes with Christopher Husbands aboard with a drop for $19,000; he is trying to build some momentum; he won smartly on turf earlier in his career. DANCING QUIETLY is running with a claiming price for the first time and it comes for just $19,000; many changes are made today as he shortens in distance, drops in value, puts the blinkers on for the first time and switches to Kimura for the initial time all in hopes of producing a better result than he had last time; two starts ago on Tapeta he had a good race in third and the runner up, Royal Laser, was a smart recent winner. CLASSIC DANIEL was given quite a welcome when he went to Fort Erie July 29th as the 3-5 favourite with only two foes to beat and he dispatched them; he is here to try turf for the second time. HOOCHIECOOCHIE SAM was on turf two starts ago in a stamina race but finished eighth; he plunged for $10,000 to go on Tapeta last time and there was no significant improvement; both the second and seventh place finishers have since won. AMEN ALLEY has tried turf only a few times; he carried his speed ok on grass earlier; he seems to peak every other start and two starts ago he had a good effort when second; his letdown performance last time has landed him here for only $20,000 and with blinkers on; he needs a breakthrough win. ERADICATOR has tried turf four times without winning; he was out of the money on Tapeta last time when used from the outside; the blinkers are on after a two race absence. MR O’PRADO is a one time winner on turf and has been up on the pace in constructive runs on the grass but has lacked stamina against key company; he will encounter some pace companionship from, Amen Alley, here.

RACE #8 BANNON 8 JUNGLE ROSE 2 SUNNIVA 7 GONE BLUES 1 ALNILAH

ALNILAH had her best race August 1st as she got up on the pace and only reluctantly let go at the end to be the runner up and she earned her highest performance rating to date; she shortens to six furlongs and comes from the rail; she has had a fast interim work on the training track. SUNNIVA has been handed over to the care of Malcolm Pierce after a good opener at Monmouth going short in July followed by a race in slop at a route second time out where she duelled with the eventual runner up and the first place finisher rallied best; she comes here from Fair Hill for White Diamond Stables Inc. ONE MOON a debut runner for owner/trainer Krista Cole is by, Cape Blanco, a source of turf and stamina; she was scratched in the spring time here and resurfaces and has posted some quick works on the training track getting ready. ONE FOR NICKI debuted recently and was eliminated from both sides at the break when squeezed out but closed four wide from the outside to be fourth; the third place finisher has come back to win for $20,000. DANCE READY ran strongly in his previous event to be second best; he had another good race last time when second best to a preferred winner and the third place finisher has come back to beat, One For Nicki; she attracted a claim by Pat Parente and has already come back with a big work with Hernandez aboard in 1.00.4. RAVINIA has been handled over to the care of Justin Nixon and is a homebred by, Field Commission, who did some nice running locally; after two races on the turf in Florida when on the edges she goes just six furlongs on Tapeta with the blinkers on; she worked August 25th in 1.00.4. GONE BLUES has failed on both dirt and turf and only Tapeta remains and so she tries it here; she is a daughter of, Curlin, with sharp early speed for Mark Casse. JUNGLE ROSE debuted at Belmont in May at six furlongs on turf for Stronach Stables and at 30-1 finished near the back after some early trouble; she is a daughter of, Animal Kingdom, and has been handed over to Hall of Fame trainer Robert Tiller; she did have a work August 6th in 59.4 getting ready and lasix is now used.

RACE #9 BANNON 1 ZESTINA 5 LINE OF VISION 6 SHE’S GOT FIRE 3 WITHOUT A DOUBT

ZESTINA has developed a determined off the pace style both on turf and Tapeta; she won on the grass two starts ago and then closed from twelfth to be second last time missing behind the speed of, Without A Doubt; seven furlongs on turf should suit her ideally at this juncture. SILENT RESPECT was on turf August 18th when returning from time away and was involved in a mid stretch collision with the seventh placed finisher; she was able to recover and come on and finish third; she gets an extra furlong here. WITHOUT A DOUBT beat the bias with Wilson aboard in a speed try August 12th over a surface more helpful to closing types; she just held off the bid of Zestina; she raced willingly on turf two starts ago at this distance giving up the lead late. AIRY FAIRY looked very comfortable winning on turf last time when she settled inside and then moved away from crowded quarters when room was available; she stretches to seven furlongs which should be fine. LINE OF VISION is stung with a three pound weight penalty here because of her past successes on Tapeta and now she is discovering turf for the first time under 125 lbs; she won the Eternal Search Stakes on Tapeta last time at a route overcoming trouble; the time before in the Lady Angela she was no match for the runner up, She’s Got Fire, and the third place finisher, Zestina; she remains a strong factor despite the heavy impost, introduction to turf, and shorter distance. SHE’S GOT FIRE had every chance last time in the Eternal Search as the favourite; she raced on a pedestrian pace but, Line Of Vision, overcame difficulty to beat her at the last moment; she shortens to seven furlongs and ran strongly in the Lady Angela at this distance two starts ago; this will be her second race ever on turf; she is certainly a better performer now than when she experimented with turf in her debut. GOSUDARINA competed in the Eternal Search and the slow pace hurt her chances; in the Lady Angela she made her move in the stretch then hung; she did have turf action earlier in her career.

RACE #10 BANNON 4 BIONDETTI’S CHOICE 1 HOLY FORT 6 TIMBERLEA 2 ORBORTUNISTIC

HOLY FORT had a run June 2nd at Churchill Downs on turf to begin the year but was far behind; she was reassigned to the Kevin Attard stable for action here August 1st at seven furlongs where she closed late on the outside suggesting more room would be in order; she gets added room, lasix and blinkers. ORBORTUNISTIC has been dedicated to turf this year and has been out of the money both times; she is by a sire who gets horses that can run late and this one was rated back last time and was finally fifth; she may appreciate the transfer in footing. WORLD RIOT debuted August 1st and was reserved on the outside and finished fifth of seven; she is a logical one to go to an extended distance given her recent preps for Nick Nosowenko. BIONDETTI’S CHOICE went long on Tapeta July 25th with a drop in value to go to an optional event and had every chance to win it but the eventual first place finisher came to the outside and beat this one in the photo; that first place finisher has since run third; she fits nicely; she is back up in value here SOTHATSTHEWAYITIS is getting a belated first start of the season and now goes for Julie Belhumeur; she had Simon Husbands aboard for a recent five furlong work in 1.01.1 getting ready; she saw route action here last year. TIMBERLEA an auction purchase debuts for True North and trainer Lorne Richards; is asked to go long at first asking from the widest post; she hasn’t developed much velocity in works and so two turn racing seems logical for her.

RACE #11 BANNON 7 ENCYCLOPEDIA 5 KITTEN’S BOY 13 VIEWFINDER 9 GET THE FACTS 10 WOODBRIDGE

FOLLOW MY LEAD had a strong performance on turf at this distance back on July 7th; he rushed when removed from the rail but he couldn’t quite get by; he has been a fringe player in two subsequent Tapeta tries and should welcome the return to the turf. RINGO CLASSIC had a belated seasonal bow July 28th and did not keep up on turf; he has since had a work in company on a yielding turf. ARTISTICO earned a high performance rating for his stamina performance on turf July 1st and in a race that came off grass last time he stayed well at ten furlongs in second; he seeks his third win on grass and shortens in distance. COLEYVILLE has won a couple of events in theatrical fashion the past while finding room deep in the stretch; the runner up from that last race has come back to win; these are tougher. KITTEN’S BOY has had just a single race this season and he rushed frantically from the outside but seemed to find the turf too firm and landed on the edges in fourth with Woodbridge third; he should be ready to go forward now. PAWNBROKER exited a thirteenth place finish in the Queen’s Plate to take a maiden win July 28th on Tapeta when the late pace weakened; he is bred for turf by, Gio Ponti, and his dam has produced two turf winners to date. ENCYCLOPEDIA showed himself to be a keen galloping type on the lead when he got a slower pace July 25th and he persisted; he has kept up his work program for Roger Attfield and Hernandez who had other options stays aboard. HE TAKES CHARGE had a nice maiden win at Gulfstream in February but then tried the Fountain Of Youth and was found wanting and has not been able to recover his peak of earlier in the winter; he is here to try turf for Mark Casse. GET THE FACTS a second son of, Tapit, in the race for Mark Casse had a good race on turf two outings ago at Keeneland in the spring against a Woodbine based winner; he makes his return following time off and seeks his second win on grass and Husbands rides for John Oxley. WOODBRIDGE stayed on ok from the second flight last time in a first allowance race on turf to be third; he will look to build on that performance. GRAY PHANTOM dropped in for $25,000 last time on Tapeta and was flat through the stretch; he seeks his initial win on turf. MALIBU UPROAR was on turf July 15th in his second start of the meeting and he responded to get the lead late and hold of, Viewfinder, who was moving quickly at the end; he meets that one here; he rates some respect. VIEWFINDER couldn’t quite get to the outside in time to catch, Malibu Uproar, July 15th but he achieved a perfect trip last time; he surged in the stretch for a maiden win on turf; he has continued to post fast works on both the turf and the training track for Gustav Schickedanz and Mike Keogh. NARROW ESCAPE a constant fringe player will compete only if this event comes off turf and he was second at this level last time.
