Commodore’s Comments Nicole Ferry

I may have spoken too soon when I reported we no longer were facing freezing temperatures. Clearly, I was not paying attention to the groundhog! Having said that though, even with the cold, sitting on PYC’s back patio is breathtaking right now. As I’m writing this, PYC welcomed almost 30 new members to our Club this month. It is humbling to realize that so many “Pensacolians” want to be part of the magic that is at PYC.

I encourage you to check out the Club’s Calendar of Events. We try each month to put as much information on it as possible. If you are ever lost or can’t find something, don’t hesitate to contact me or, of course, our office staff, too.

When I put my name in the hat to be Commodore of PYC, it was with the intention to become a seasoned sailor; but that wasn’t big enough of a goal. My goal, our Board’s goal this year, is to get as many of our members to learn to sail as possible. So many of our new members joined with the wish to learn to sail. While it might be a bit daunting, it is a realistic goal. Talbot Wilson put me onto US Sailing’s program called “First Sail.” It pairs seasoned sailors with “newbies” and takes them out on the water. Led by Former Commodore Susan McKinnon and Shine Rogers, PYC will host our first “First Sail” (pun intended) on April 9th at 11:00-4:00. If you are interested in either being the “Salty” or the “Newbie,” contact either Susan or Shine.

As I mentioned previously, I’ve started my own journey to sail, or rather, to compete. Most of you know that, by day, I am a family lawyer. What you may not know is that I’m a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I’ve competed in 3 World Competitions, 4 Nationals and 3 District Tournaments. I only tell you to let you know that my hope is that sailing becomes “that need to compete” for me. If you’ve ever seen me spar, you’ll know I hate losing. PYC has its eye on the title match in New Orleans at the 100th year anniversary of the Lipton Cup. My hope is to be on that team! While I was thinking of that event, today I was able to speak to the skipper of “American Magic,” Terry Hutchison. I asked him what advice he would give to someone contemplating learning to sail. He said to “pick a relaxing, non-stressful environment with knowledgeable people.” He went on to say that the first time on the sailboat doesn’t have to be a lesson, just to enjoy the water. Terry started sailing when he was 7-years-old. He said that for him, sailing was all about the freedom and responsibility. . . And now for a 50-year-old, it is the same, but with more self-awareness. Individual lessons from our own Sailing Director, César Travado, are available. All you gotta do is call . . .

Our Club is growing, and while we may have a cap at membership soon upon us, in order to develop member value, “everything is coming up roses.” I hope that your April brings much sunshine and salt!

The Maders put down roots in Pensacola, for the second time. They, like many service members before them, realized Pensacola is a truly great place to live. Three years ago, Brenda opened Dolce and Gelato on Zaragossa Street, but she has recently relocated to the Old City Grocery Building on 12th Avenue. The new location is under renovation and expected to open in April. It will have music, movies and other special events. The initial plan is to open at 7:00 am for coffee and remain open longer in the spring and summer evenings. She has provided gelato to PYC; recently, we had peppermint stick gelato (my favorite). Dolce and Gelato also provides gelato to local restaurants like The Union House, Jackson’s, and Bonelli’s, to name a few. The new shop promises to be as eclectic as the first site. As always, PYC is a family, so please support member owned businesses.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

BRENDA and CHUCK MADER

Meet members Brenda and Chuck Mader! Brenda retired from the practice of law after more than 30 years. She held positions in law that ranged from criminal defense, to prosecutor, to dependency defense. While practicing law, she followed her Navy pilot husband to Kansas, Florida, Maryland and Guam. Chuck went to medical school and returned to the Navy as a flight surgeon.

Vice Commodore’s Comments Johnny Smith

At the last General Membership Meeting, I presented the facts concerning the condition of our com-mittee boat “Maxine” and the amount of money that has been spent on that boat in the last few years trying to extend its life. Afterward, the members approved a motion, made by Past Commodore Alan McMillan, to replace the boat and to partner with the Satori Foundation in order to purchase a boat for dual use. Both the Club and the Foundation will spend up to a maximum of $65,000 each to purchase such a boat and will be equal partners. We’re now searching for a suitable boat; so stay tuned for news concerning our purchase. After purchasing a replacement boat and putting it in operation, “Maxine” will be sold.

Dock Master Greg Spitzer has finished the repairs to the rotted wood at the back porch saving the Club a great deal of money, and he did a very nice job of it. Thanks Greg!

The new carpet finally arrived and repainting has begun. As of today, the foyer and mid-downstairs areas, including the walls lead-ing to upstairs, have been repainted and the new paint looks great! By the time you read this I expect that the painting will have been completed and that the new carpet will have been scheduled for replacement as well.

Friday Night Dining in the ballroom on February 22nd and March 8th were huge successes with fantastic attendance and en-tertainment being provided both evenings. The March 8th entertainment was provided by Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe imitators and was hugely entertaining! We all look forward to continued use of the ballroom for Friday Night Dining when it isn’t booked for other events.

We’re still waiting for Dale’s Marine Construction to schedule the repairs to the East Marina erosion problem and the settling concrete between the dock crane and south bulkhead. The permits are in now in-hand. It should be done soon, in time for an active spring and summer boating season.

By the time you read this, your Board of Directors will have had our March meeting and will have discussed some minor changes to the PYC House Rules, as well as possible changes to entrance fees of certain membership categories and an adjusted membership cap.

Some sailing news – Members Neil and Janet Davies have elected not to place their new Lagoon 40 Catamaran in charter ser-vice, as was their original plan, and have decided to bring the boat home to Pensacola. We look forward to seeing the new boat and hearing all the good stories from the Davies and their crew about their Atlantic crossing and sailing north from the islands to Pensacola. When last heard from, they were in Cane Garden Bay, BVI and George Gamble and crew, aboard “Testarossa,” were in Roseau, Dominica.

Our back deck looks almost new! Nothing like a fresh paint job.PYC is looking great!

This is a BANNER time for our Club!! Spring has just sprung, new wall paint is being completed ahead of our carpet installation, and our membership just grew by almost 30 new members!!! This is the largest number of new member applications we have ever had at one time, and indeed, Pensacola Yacht Club is a VERY hot ticket these days!!

PYC is a wonderful entity with a charming clubhouse, which has been home to our Club since 1947; but, as great as she is, the building can only accommodate a finite number of members … and, as of this note, we are now 703 members strong! General Manager Jim Warwick has maintained excellent qualities of service, in addition to great food and beverages from Chef Artie’s Staff, and “Andrea’s Army” is keeping up with all of us at ALL hours at the “Blue Bar.”

Even with Club Manager Scott Segars handling enough functions to require some 7-day weeks and 4:30 am start times, as well as John handling his own responsibilities, we as a Club are very near maximum capability. In short - to maintain the quality of our experience, we will be limiting our total membership number to 725, and that is very much OK! As we move forward, we will establish a waiting list for new prospective members, and our main push will be to retain our current members with more offerings at the Club, with events coming to PYC, and with “Destination Raft Ups,” which I’ll talk about next month.

Dr. Andy Candela joined me in representing PYC at the recent Florida Council of Yacht Clubs Meeting in Marathon, and we enjoyed a great relationship with that group. Being a member club of the FCYC allows any PYC member to have reciprocal privileges with all 36 clubs, which is a real benefit of being a part of that association.

As you receive your April Jib Sheet, the Spanish ship “Elcano” will once again be arriving at Pensacola Bay. PYC has issued a challenge to the midshipmen from Spain in the form of a sailing match race to be contested out of PYC on April 2nd. This 1-day event will be interlaced with Spanish naval officers and diplomats, as well as PYC sailors and US naval officers. Fleet Captain Hal Smith and Sailing Director César Travado have set up a great event to honor the 500-year celebration of Magellan’s path to the New World.

Don’t hesitate to find your Board Members for any questions or ideas. We have an amazing Club - thanks to all of you, and we aim to keep getting better! Aloha - Tom

CONGRATULATIONS, TOM! You’ve earned these accolades!

On March 23rd, we had the Annual Crawfish Boil with more than 100 members in attendance with their guests. I can eat my weight in crawfish, but not everyone shares this talent. Having grown up in Louisiana and attended LSU, I sympathize with the novice crawfish-peeler. It can be a lot of work for a little meat; however, at crawfish boils throughout the South, friends come together for community. PYC is no exception. The boil remains my favorite social event at PYC. Thank you to all who came out.

CRAWFISH BOIL! Editors’ Note: We were able to sneak these pictures in at the last minute.

More to come in May issue!

For the second year, PYC is going to the Wahoos! This year, we will be at the opening night on April 10th. Reminder: The “American Magic” crew will be with us. Their skipper, 4-time America’s Cup athlete, Terry Hutchison, will throw out the first pitch of the game. We only have 70 tickets left as I write this. Don’t wait to call or email your reservations to [email protected].

Every year I tell members, “Don’t wait to make Easter Brunch reservations!” We sell out every year. Every year. We will have a magician, balloonist and Easter Bunny at our Easter celebration. The Easter Egg Hunt, with more than 1500 stuffed eggs, will be at 12:30. Don’t miss it!

Back by popular demand is our Jazz Brunch, which will be held on Sunday, April 7th, from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. You will need reservations. Last year, it was just wonderful, with Mimosas, Bloody Marys and, of course, J-A-Z-Z! You really can’t beat the atmosphere at PYC any day, but really - with Jazz? Don’t miss it!

Looking even further ahead, we do have planned a Cinco de Mayo Celebration, a Mother’s Day Brunch on May 12th, and a Memorial Day fun celebration at the Club.

Fleet Captain’s Report Hal Smith

THE 29ERS ARE HERE!

PYC finally received its fleet of five (5) 29ers for an aggressive Junior Sailing Program and some exciting regattas at PYC. All boats are used. Three of the boats are ready to compete at the national level, while two are a bit more worn. These two will serve a bit like American Magic’s “Mule.” This combination stretched the dollar budget to create a good working initial fleet and a 6-boat aluminum trailer to carry our 5 boats plus a coach RIB to regattas. The 29er is a high performance, 2-crew skiff teaching skill sets for quick and delicate handling. The Juniors are excited, but they must train hard to learn how to master the 29ers. We continue to thank Carol and Tom Patterson for making this possible.

PYC AWARDED US NATIONAL SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPSThis is a very prestigious regatta for PYC to be honored to host. It will consist of six (6) classes: Optimist, C420, Laser, Laser Radial, Nacra 15, and 29ers. The Nacra 15 is the little brother to the Nacra 17 foiling catamaran sailed in the Olympics, and the 29er is the little brother to the 49er that is also sailed in the Olympics. Both the Laser and Laser Radial classes are sailed in the Olympics, so we expect to have the rising stars in Olympic development be our guests here next year. It is possible that some very high level coaching will happen here preceding the regatta. The regatta is limited, so the total number of boats will be about 150. While three of these classes are double-handed, there will still be only about half of the visitors we had last year for the Optimist Nationals, and this will be a 4-day event versus the Opti Nationals which was a 10-day event. If you would like to volunteer, let us know.

2019 RACE COMMITTEE OPPORTUNITIES ARE HEREWe have several different regattas scheduled to make 2019 an exciting and interesting year. A great way to enjoy yachting at PYC is to participate on a race committee. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. It even includes the famous “Free Lunch!” Contact our Race Committee chairman, Bob Madden: [email protected], or his assistant, Monica Mortara: [email protected], and they will connect you with the perfect regatta and position for you. Bob is also our chief scorer this year working with Maryanne, DO, César, and others who have done this before. This will keep one person from having to do this all of the time. You might like to help with scoring and be the first to know who won! Similarly, Richard Brent is our judge/protest chairman (in addition to being PRO for some regattas), in order to be sure we have appropriate qualified judges for the level of event being hosted. We are fortunate to have Charlie Harp with his experience to often be our head judge and César Travado, our Sailing Director, to help as needed.

BE A REGATTA CHAIRPERSONThe chair people will promote the regatta while they plan a special fun event. The race committee will, of course, be completely managed by the RC chairs, and Sally Smith will get the trophies. The NOR’s and SI’s are already written. This is fun and gets you involved with the exciting part of the Club. Ask the Fleet Captain for details and opportunities.

ADULTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO SAILOur new RS Ventures are here, rigged, and ready to go. They are fantastic boats for teaching adults to sail. They are fun and, responsive, but also stable and safe. There will be opportunities for dinghy sailing (C420’s, Lasers, Sunfish) as well as larger keelboats such as Satori’s Tartan 28, “Second Wind.” If you have been thinking about this, it is time to act. Get in line. César will happily teach you the skills needed for loving sailing for the rest of your life. Rates vary.

VERY SPECIAL 2019 HISTORICAL EVENT

The Spanish training ship, the tall ship “Juan Sebastian De Elcano,” is scheduled to visit Pensacola the first week of April as part of a celebration of the 500th year anniversary of Magellan sailing around the world on the original “Elcano”. There is a challenge to race “the best of the “Elcano” midshipmen” against our “PYC best”(including a couple of US Navy officers) on April 2, 2019, in a friendly regatta during their visit. We are planning to have three match races in our RS Ventures using three different crews from the Spanish Navy on their side and three different crews on the PYC/USA side. PYC members have volunteered to take spectators out to watch and cheer. Check in with Event Director & Rear Commodore Tom Pace to coordinate. You will not want to miss this.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2018 YACHTING AWARD WINNERSThe 2018 Pensacola Bay Yachting Awards Banquet was finally held Friday, March 1. George Gamble put on a great event which honored accomplishments from supporters to race winners. Our PYC staff did a terrific job of making all of our Pensacola Bay Club members feel at home and well fed. Commodore Ferry was on hand to help present the awards. See Page 13 for a list of winners.

Blessing of the FleetThe Pensacola Yacht Club Chapter of the Florida Commodores Association will host the traditional “Blessing of the Fleet” on Sunday, April 14, 2019. The Florida Commodores Association is a statewide organization of Past Commodores of recognized yacht clubs whose mission is to maintain the customs, traditions and history of yachting and to educate future yacht club leaders.

All Pensacola Bay area boat owners and skippers are encouraged to participate in this historic event. You do not have to be a member of any yacht club to participate. As a Bay area boater you are invited to participate in this event.

Past participants included members of Navy Yacht Club Pensacola, Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, Grand Lagoon Yacht Club, and the Pensacola Sail and Power Squadron, as well as PYC. However, the skippers of all boats, both sail and power, regardless of membership in a yacht club, are encouraged to join in the festivities at PYC. Boats may be tied up at the PYC dock prior to the event but must depart the dock NLT 1600. In addition, prizes will be given for the top 3 best decorated sail and powerboats.

Schedule of Events

1530 All boats assemble in the vicinity of Bayou Chico Channel Marker Number 2 Form up in a circle (counterclockwise) in sequence with at least 3 boat lengths between boats. PYC Race Committee Boat “MAXIM,” (or its substitute) will be in the vicinity to organize the parade. Maintain VHF Communications on Channel 69.

1630 The Lead Boat will lead the parade of boats toward the PYC dock.

1700 The Lead Boat will pass in front of the PYC dock to Salute the Commodore and receive their blessing from PYC Fleet Chaplain and judged by the Judges Committee then continue into the turning basin near the old Runyan’s boat yard. After all boats have passed the dock, skippers may return to the dock for docking and continuation of festivities on the lawn at PYC. Awards given for top three decorated sailboat and power boats.

1800 Hors D’ouerves will be available in the Clubhouse.

Entry fee: It is requested a $25.00 per boat tax deductible donation. Make checks payable to the Florida Commodores Association Foundation (a 501 C 3 charitable foundation) to support competitive sailing training and competitions by qualified Florida sailors.

Registration: Registration Form is available on line at www.PensacolaYachtClub.org. You may complete the form online and email form to [email protected] or you may mail your registration with tax deductible donation check to the PYC Chapter FCA, Pensacola Yacht Club, P. O. Box 989, Pensacola, FL 32591.

It was a damp and foggy February morning when 13 boats congregated at Fort Pickens for a raft up and birthday party. Shortly after noon, the fog began to lift, the sky began to clear, and smiles began to appear. The afternoon was beautiful and was topped off by a brilliant sunset. The temperature in the low 60s made the beach bon fire feel really good. Many thanks to the boats that heated up a large portion of the tasty Teriyaki Beef supplied by PYC. As always, the sides, salads, and desserts were plentiful and delicious.

Everyone had long since retreated from the beach when the storm blew through about 2 AM. The wind gusts approached 35 knots for a brief period of time, but all the boats remained securely anchored and no “anchor dances” were reported.

The highlight of the return trip Sunday was watching the American Magic Team race across the bay on the America’s Cup practice boat, “The Mule”. It was so exciting to watch this incredible craft fly past you on her foils. There was time for a few good pictures, but you had to be quick as she was sailing past at about 40 MPH. Pretty fast for a sailboat. Sunday morning was bright, clear, and a little cooler than Saturday and everyone agreed it was wonderful to see the sunshine. The variety of yummy brunch dishes at the Bloody Mary/Mimosa beach brunch was amazing. Thank you, Cynthia Cannon and Bruce Cobia for hosting this fun raft up. Thank you, Cynthia for sharing your birthday with us. We wish you many more.

Get your April calendars out -it’s going to be a busy month. On April 5 we will form a flotilla to escort the “Juan Sebastion de Elcano” to Pensacola Pass as she leaves after her visit here. April 14 is The Blessing of The Fleet, something no true sailor would ever want to miss. And, Julie and Steven Orr will host the April Raft Up at Pirate’s Cove on April 27. Lots of opportunities to get out on the water in April, so we will see you there or around the South’s Finest Yacht Club!

Make your plans now! Have you ever thought about sailing on a tall ship yourself? Come join us (Jim and Linda) in November for two weeks aboard the “Royal Clipper.” This is a beautiful 439-foot, 5-masted sailing ship that will be sailing from Barbados through the Panama Canal to Balboa, Panama beginning on November 16. A group of 24 PYC members and friends have reservations for this trip but there is room for more. Send an e-mail to [email protected] if you would like more information about the perks we get as part of the PYC group.
