TAYSIDE JUNIORS

Last Saturday's OVD card turned into a match secretary's nightmare

with six ties involving local sides end -ing up in draws.

There were three first division league matches played last Saturday

and the results didn't do us any harm. Arbroath s.c. could have

moved within four points of ourselves but dropped their first home

point of the season in a srprise share of the points with Kinnou11.

Carnoustie lost only their second league game of the season, going

down 1-2 at home to Jeanfield Swifts. Kirrie Thistle, for whom ex

Tayport Bruce Burnett has been a regular marksman, remain entrenched

at the bottom of the league after losing 1-5 at home to Forfar Albion.

It war Kirrie's second home defeat by that score and they will have

their work cut out in the second half of the league programme if

they are to climb out of the league's basement.

In division Two, Arbroath Vies are setting the early pace. A 4-0

win over Cqupar Angus made it seven wi n-s out of seven games. Already

it looks as if Vies, St Josephs and Broughty Athletic, the present

top three will be the promoted trio .

DID YOU KNOW

•••••••

That Tayport's recent visit to Luncarty coincided with the launch of their new match programme. Let's hope more Tays i de clubs follow suit and supply the punter with more information .

••••••• SINCE WE LAST MET .....

Last week's win over Cumbernauld United wasn't a classic but there were some enjoyable moments and none more so than Gary Lamont's goal. With virtually his first touch since coming on as substitute, Gary, a l ways a favourite with the fans anyway, had the the 270 crowd roaring t heir ~ppreciation by crashing an unstoppable volley past the helpless Cumbernauld goalie. Jackie Devine•s goal was also a cracker while Ha mish and D.R . _weighed in with their usual quota of quality goals.

The Glasgow side started both halves in spritely fashion but, over the piece, weren't really at the races and their frustrations

- boiled over in the second half _when they had a player ordered off after tangling -with Gary Lamont.

~s a final point it would be fair to say that neither camp was too enamoured by • the performance of Referee Roy, one of the post match talking points .

TODAY'S GAME

SATURDAY 7TH NOVEMBER 1992

TAYSIDE McEWAN'S LAGER LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

TAYPORT v DUNDEE VIOLET

This league game was originally scheduled for Glenesk Park but, with Violet's stablemates, Elmwood, drawing at Broughty Athletic in the OVD Scottish Cup last week, the replay goes on at the Violet ground.

This will be the first meeting of the season between the sides. After today the only side we've yet to meet in the League is Carnoustie.

Violet started the season disastrously, losing their opening five games and 22 goals in the process but, since then, they have taken six points from six games including a creditable share of the points at F~rfar Albion.

After taking only one point from 2 league games in mid September. we•vi won four on the trot and gone to the top of the table . Now that we're there the object is to stay there and put some daylight between ourselves and our nearest contenders.

Violet have netted 12 times in their past four games and, with Tayport hitting their opponents' net no fewer than 24 times in their past four home games, the fans could be treated to another goal feast

TAYPORT AND VIOLET - PAST MEETINGS

The teams have met only twice before, on league business last season. In August 1991 we won by 4-0 and then at Glenesk on 14th December we returned a 2-0 victory. Tayport's team in the first game was:- Smith, P.Reilly, Paterson, Dolan, Sommerville, Hunter, Irons, Cushnie, Thoms, D.Reilly and Devine. Subs were Lamont & Coventry. Goalscorers were Sommerville, Hunter, Devine & D.Reilly. Comment in the club records said "Tayport were always on top but missed a host of chances, particularly in the first half •. At Glenesk Mann, Wilkie, Spalding and Coventry were in for Smith, Irons, P.Reillyr D.Reilly. It was one of the few games that Dave has missed. Lamont and P.Reilly were substitutes. One goal ahead at halftime, Tayport netted through Sommerville & Devine. The records noted that 80% of the crowd of 50 were Tayport fans.

THE BAKER'S BIT Dundee Violet are our visitors today and I'd like to welcome them and their followers to the Canniepairt. _Both ourselves and Violet were successfully involved in the Scottish Cup last week and I hope our support enjoyed the game.

We knew beforehand the standard of opposition. Ronnie and myself both had a look at Cumbernauld and were in agreement that they had quite a few weaknesses that could be exploited. We worked hard on Monday and Wednesday nights going over their failings and the particular type of game which we had to adopt.

I think in the main our homework paid off. We knew if our players applied the proper approach and attitude we would have little difficulty. It proved to be the case - 7-1 - and with a wee bit of luck and official linesmen, I've no doubt we could have scored more.

I felt we played well on the day without being exceptional. We know there's definately more in the tank! Still, we won't grumble, our last six games have seen us score 37 times- an average of six a game which can't be bad!

Today's league game is every bit as important as last week's tie. A victory and two points could see us draw further ahead of Forfar W.E. who are a.t Kinnoull, another league contender, so there's added incentive for our players. There's no Junior team in the

1country come to Tayport and don't give us respect. Violet will be no exception -. Our players know only too well what's expected of them.

Before I finish I must, on behalf of the management and players, thank our supporters who attended last week's tie for their vocal encouragement. Well done and keep it going.

Support the 'Port ! ,

Dave Baikie.

Violet are unique in that they

While the 'Port support were seeing eight goals

the Canniepairt, tnose who followed Violet up to the Moray Firth witnessed nine

Although Bishopmill are from Elgin, the tie was played a few miles down the road at the picturesqe Forest Park, ground of Burghead Thistle.

Violet must have had too heavy a lunch because they started badly to trail 0-3 at half time but got · into their stride in the 2nd. half and goals from Brian Scrimgeour(2); Ronnie Mitchell(2) and an own goal ·put them t~rough to round 2.

ZAMOYSKI CUP UPDATE

Shock as holders Downfield crash out.

When the above headline appeared in the 'Courier' the other Monday, the Sports Desk was, I believe, inundated with calls from irate Tayport fans. 'Junior Correspondent' must have forgotten that May afternoon when a 2-0 victory over Forfar West End brought the Zamoyski to the Canniepairt. ( see photo of presentation at North End Park). The holders are , of course, alive and kicking and looking forward to the second round draw. The first two rounds are played on a regional basis, leaving eight clubs from the Tayside Association and eight from the North Region to go into the hat for the all in third'round draw. North sides still retaining an interest in the competition are:Aberdeen East End, Banks o ' Dee, Buchanhaven Hearts, Buckie Rovers or Crombie, Bon Accord, Deveronside, F.C. Stoneywood, Fraserburgh United, Hall Russell United, Insch, Inverurie Loco, Islavale, Lewis United, Longside or Stonehaven, Nairn St Ninian or Sunnybank and Turriff or Ellen.

GEORGE TAYLOR Club members were saddened to hear of the untimely death earlier this week of former player, George Taylor. George, 36, who vas a well known Dundee publican played as a f~ll back with Tayport Amateurs from 1974 until 1977. During his time at Tayport George played 95 games, scoring 4 goals. He was a member of the side which toured Belgium in 1975 and of the sides which appeared in the Fife Cup Final and two Gray Trophy Fi nals in 1975 &1976. The club extends its sympathy to George's family.

OVD SCOTTISH CUP REVIEW

Shock of the first round was undoubtedly holders Auchinleck Talbot being held 2-2 to lowly Muirkirk. Muirkirk will sell more pies than for many a year when the Talbot support rolls into the village for the replay. Scotland's newest Junior team, Harthill, went out at the first hurdle, beaten at Bellshill, Old friends Arthurlie defeated Preston by 7-0 and other short priced sides, Newtongrange Star and Hill o'Beath won comfortably at Dunbar and Insch respectively. Kelty Hearts came close to an embarrassing home defeat by Pumph~rston but rallied with two late goals to go through.

Locally the talking point was Downfield being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Wishaw from the Reebok Central League Division Two while one of the results which made most pleasant reading was uhat from Larkhall. Luncarty were expected tp be well thumped but 2-4 was one of their best looking scorelines for some time. Second Round Draw The draw for the second round of the OVD Cup, which takes in all those clubs which received first round byes, takes place in the Elgin City Social Club tomorrow afternoon. The ties will be due

INJURY LIST GROWS

From last season we've been handicapped by injuries to key players and it's unlikely if there's been an occasion this season that Dave Baikie has had to tell a fit player that he wouldn't be getting a jersey.

However, things are slowly improving. Frankie Dolan (right), out since March with a broken leg, is back in full training. Grant Cushnie has had an operation and is about six weeks away from being fit while Kevin Thoms is awaiting word to go in for a ~nee operation.

George Malone has missed the last two games and could be absent again today.

Kevin Lynch(right) has become the latest casualty and could be out for some time with a groin injury.

F.I.F.A. CALLED IN

The S.F.A. have called in F.I.F.A. in an attempt to obtain clearance for Sean Wilkie. The Tayport defender, now fit after having a plaster removed from his ankle, is still awaiting clearance from the New Zealand F.A ..

The matter has dragged on now for some time and, with negotiations between the clubs seemingly getting nowhere, Tayport asked the S.F.A. to look into things on their behalf.
