Booysens SAPS communication officer, Lorraine Van Emmerick said, “The autopsy shows that the cause of the deaths were drowning, however investigations are still taking place surrounding the drownings.” Nontyayambo explained that the children went missing on 11 December. “My brother, Othembela and my son William told me that they were going to play with George. The last time I saw them was when they came back around 15:00 and I gave them food. George said he wasn’t hungry but was eating sweets. I asked him where he got the sweets and he said from a man that I know. After the two ate dinner all three ran back outside to play.” All three boys were found the next day in the school’s swimming pool. “They were naked and all their clothes were found in a pile next to the pool. The Johannesburg and Krugersdorp SPCA Inspectors are on the road 24 hours a day, ready to assist animals in need. This involves anything from rescuing a dove from an electricity pylon to investigating cases of alleged cruelty. At times, it is necessary for JSCPA inspectors to place themselves in danger to help those animals who need it most. The items on the inspectorate wish list may seem insignificant, but they can mean the world to an animal in need of assistance.• 12 x LED Torches: These are used to light the way in dark situations where an animal needs help.• 10 x Garmin / Tom Tom Navigators: It becomes challenging to get to the animal as quickly as possible when having to search for places that end up not being listed in a map book. The time taken to get to the

animal can be greatly reduced using a GPS device.• 12 x Bolt cutters• 12 x 4-pound hammers• 12 x Standard Size spades• 3 x Long Ladders (Must be able to fold up so that it can fit in the back of a 1400 bakkie)• 12 x Crowbars• 12 x Purse Tazers: Many a time the inspectors are robbed at night while trying to assist an animal. These will be used to defend themselves from criminals, allowing them enough time to contact the SAPS for assistance.

Show your love towards animals and donate these items to the inspectorate department. To see what JSCPA are still in need of, please e-mail Jolene Delport [email protected].

Cotlands recently had a visit from former Minister Jay Naidoo in order to view their early learning programme and toy library programme. Jay Naidoo is currently Chair of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Partnership Council of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), headquartered in Geneva and launched at the 2002 UN Summit on Children as a public private partnership to tackle malnutrition facing 2 billion people in the world.

The Glenvista-based JOY Dogs joined the e-toll protest on 25 January, which started in Wemmer pan. There was a great turnout of bikers and cars and the JOY Dogs were welcomed in the protest. However, even though the focus was on the e-tolls, protesters still wanted a picture with these beautiful dogs.

Even dogs are against e-tolls

I don’t like ‘deurmekaar’ aisles.Last week I went to do my grocery shopping at Pick n Pay The Glen. The reason why I don’t mind driving to the big shopping centre and struggling to find parking is because I like and know the aisles of Pick n Pay The Glen, and due to his I get my shopping done quickly, easily and hassle free. However, last Monday I left Pick n Pay very frustrated. I had everything else but what I needed in my trolley. I came home with so much superfluous stuff. I know why, the aisle design in the shop has changed. So what I enjoyed about the store organisation and familiarity is all gone.My shopping plan is to start from one side of the shop (where the clothes are minus the outdoor aisle) and work my way through the aisles like a worm. However, this time I found myself backtracking, going back to aisles searching for items.I asked the teller why the aisles are so ‘deurmekaar’. She said I can ask the store manager as she can’t answer that. She had a genuine urgency to get the manager to answer my question, as she called him several times. As a colleague of hers came and fetched my trolley, I overheard her telling the colleague my dilemma. This colleague also seemed to really want me to speak to the manager. It seems some of the employees also find the new layout confusing. I spoke to the friendly store manager, who understood my frustration, adding that I am not the only customer to complain. He explained that it was head office that had instructed them to change the aisle layout. Apparently there was not a lot of foot count going to the outdoor aisle (the one I always left out). They now placed the washing powder there, as everyone needs washing powder, to increase the number of people going through the aisle. He added that they (employees) are also struggling to get used to the layout. I asked why some items are also not in stock, he explained that the stock is now being kept at their main warehouse and they that are trying to get used to this part of the new system as well. Now I have a question. This new layout and system has been implemented for six months already, yet they are still trying to find their feet and both customers and employees do not find it productive. Why then is it still like this? One, because they are making more profit and the proof is on my till slip. That was way too much for a single person buying food. The amount actually sickens me. So yes, the profit is going up. However, if the store stays like that I am going to find another store that suits me better, as this store just isn’t convenient for me anymore.

Is it worthwhile to make more money for a period of time and in the process lose customers who were loyal buyers every month?

The Southdale Depot of Pikitup is due to roll out their ‘Sorting at Source’ concept early in March. Clr Dennis Jane informs residents that they will have two refuse bags delivered to their homes. “One clear plastic bag is intended for recyclable items tins, bottles, plastic etc, and the second, a woven plastic bag, for paper and cardboard.”Clr Jane went on to explain that on refuse collection day the two bags must be placed along the 240L bin, not inside it. Refuse trucks are then expected make the collection. Clear plastic bags will be loaded

and a replacement bag left for the resident to use until the next collection. The woven bag for paper and cardboard will have the contents emptied onto the truck and the bag left for reuse. If no bags are placed for contents collection no replacement bag will be supplied. When Pikitup undertakes the first bag delivery, pamphlets will be supplied providing more detail about how recycling at source will operate.Clr Jane will provide information about the commencement date of Sourcing at Source, once they are known.

John Souter might be 67 years of age, but he still has a lot of gusto and fight in him. This was proven when two hijackers attempted to steal his Mazda 323 on 30 January, when he and his wife were leaving their house in Sheffield Street, Kenilworth just after 7:00 in the morning.Souter’s wife was taking the dustbins out, as it was refuse day. John reversed his vehicle out and got out to close the gate, leaving the engine running. He acknowledged that this was negligent but said it is an old habit. An African man, who according to Souter was sitting on the pavement, ran, jumped in the Mazda and locked the door. John ran back to the vehicle and opened the back door (it was still unlocked) and climbed in and started to strangle the suspect. A second suspect came to assist the first, pushing Souter’s wife to the side. He got in the back with John and kicked him. During the struggle John felt a finger in his mouth, “and I just bit as hard as I could.” The accomplice jumped out of the car and ran away.By this time the first suspect had managed to reverse the car in the street. John continued to strangle the driver while Souter’s wife managed to unlock the door and was also going to start fighting the hijacker. The suspect quickly escaped and ran away.A case has been opened at Booysens SAPS and Souter’s wife has received trauma counselling from Booysens SAPS as well as

from ER24. “She was very shaken up and didn’t want to go back to the house after the incident,” John said.A doctor has put John on a course of ant-retrovirals, in case blood was shed during the finger biting. To add to John’s heroic efforts, he had dislocated his back two weeks before but still managed to fight the hijackers off.

South Africa has huge challenges when it comes to healthcare. The public health system has difficulties providing proper primary healthcare to many people, and the private sector is not accessible to many who are not on comprehensive medical aids. For this reason Accessible Quality Healthcare (AQH) has started a campaign ‘Each one Help one’, in order to allow disadvantaged people to visit a doctor and get proper medical care. tame TIMES spoke to Dr Rakumakoe to find out how it works.“This is really the Robin Hood style of helping the situation - taking from the rich to help the poor. Here we are saying people in affluence usually are able to pay even up to R1000 for the same level of care we provide at R300. We invite them to use our services and pay R300 for their consultation and medication, then donate the difference to help us see people who are not able to pay. “Also, we see that some practitioners request people to make cash co-payments over and above the medical aid and we do not. We also ask our patients on medical aids to donate to the same cause,” Dr Rakumakoe said. Dr Rakumakoe has been operating private medical practices in small towns over the last 12 years. She recently completed her Masters in Business Administration and joined forces with Dr TP Mofokeng in March 2013 to start AQH, a social enterprise that has a medical practice in Mondeor, with the aim to grow and open more clinics in peri-urban and rural parts of South Africa and to provide quality and affordable healthcare to everyone. AQH’s value proposition is providing high quality, easily accessible care that is affordable to all people. They have designed cost saving mechanisms from their side and manage their overheads well to ensure that the patients are able to receive the best care with the minimal amount paid. The doctor added that the model of ‘Each one Help one’ relies on the honesty and the goodness of people. “We request those that can afford to donate to assist, and we are counting on those that say they cannot afford it to be honest. I have seen the model work in India, at the Narayan hospital of Dr Shetty, and I believe that people are ultimately good and can see

the benefit of what we are trying to achieve,” Dr Rakumakoe said.A patient who donates money to the model is free to nominate the person they are donating for. The consultations are ultimately limited by the availability of funds in the “donation kitty”. If in that month, for example, R3000 was donated it would mean 10 people will be seen without paying. tame TIMES asked the health sector social entrepreneur if she could shed some light on why medical aids are so expensive, as well as doctor’s fees. She went on to explain, “The chunk of people’s medical aid contributions cover staff remunerations, overhead and administration costs at the scheme’s offices. This is before the amount that is set aside to cover the medical costs of contributors. “The risk is also spread across such that younger healthier individuals ultimately pay for the medical costs of the older, more frequently sick individuals who are in hospitals mostly. Hospitalisation costs are exorbitant, try covering those out of your pocket. Doctors consultation fees are regulated by bodies like the Board of Healthcare funders, but these are seen as more enforcers of guidelines than stipulators. The fees also cover the admin and overhead costs in doctors’ offices. Our AQH model thus focuses on making sure that those costs that have nothing to do with the healthcare of individuals are well regulated and kept to a minimum; basically we remove the frills to help us focus on what is important.”

AQH is situated at 189 Columbine Avenue, Mondeor. Tel: 011 941 4153.

Depression (4)Almost 20% of adolescents between the ages of fourteen and eighteen years suffer from different degrees of depression. Suicide can be seen as one of the most visible effects of depression. According to a study from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, one out of every 12 South African high school pupils has tried to commit suicide. Apart from the immediate effect of depression on the adolescent, which include a likelihood to criminal activities and dropping out of school,

long term effects range from very troubled teenage years on to that of an adult needing to cope with many additional challenges such as recurring depression, suicidal behaviour, substance abuse, not furthering studies after school, having poor work records and/or finding it difficult to find employment. It is therefore of utmost importance that a parent have their child assessed if they suspect a possibility that their child might be suffering from depression.Jahwe Rapha Counselling centre can be contacted on 082 495 8401.

The economic global slowdown of 2008 has affected most countries, especially the euro zone countries like Spain and Portugal, which were the countries hit hardest in the euro zone. One million British people lived on food parcels, while 19 380 000 people found themselves without jobs in the euro zone.Europe is our greatest trading partner. I find it strange that the DA is promising to create six million jobs if it is elected to national government (tame TIMES 4 Feb). It is true that this country had set the target of 6% economic growth before 2008, but we all know the economic crunch of 2008 made it difficult to achieve that projection, but we should appreciate the fact that in South Africa the impact of this global slowdown was not that brutal that we needed to apply measures such as economic bailout and austerity measures like cases in Europe and America. In an open democracy we all have a right to political expression. I agree, but the definition of a political expression in some cases is debatable. The marching of a political party to the offices of another political party, in the case of the DA, defeat the purpose of exposing the failures of the ANC. It is only when you target the relevant departments that execute those functions which fail to satisfy the needs of South Africans as required by our constitution that makes sense.Up to now the DA appears not to have found a way of convincing the majority of South Africa that they can be an alternative government to the ANC, but it is never too late to learn.

God bless South Africa.

The issue of land and the sharing thereof has been a discussion point for much longer than many think. In recent days, the land talks have taken a jagged turn, but what many South Africans don’t realise is that in reality, although current talks are centred on race, there is a bigger issue and that issue threatens the budget and the progress of South Africa.A few months back I was really surprised at the extent of the seriousness surrounding the fact that South African land is at times owned by foreigners, while nationals go without. I had a conversation with a senior negotiator at Eskom and he was the one who sensitised me to this. When the country suffers power (electricity) related strains, Eskom sometimes has to upgrade their distribution infrastructure, and this a process that most of the time involves negotiating with land-owners for lines to cross their properties. The problem that the state body would then encounter is the refusal of the foreign landowners, whom at times don’t even live in the country, to have these lines cross their properties. Now it does not take a rocket scientist to realise the setback this trend puts on the budget, because even the slightest bend in the spine of the power grid costs in the regions of millions. Not only that, but what happens to the potential growth of the country when we have a unpredictable delivery of power? This week I want to ask my fellow nationals, black and white, do you think there should be a review on policies of land ownership and what should then happen in instances like the one mentioned above?Let’s chat, e-mail me at [email protected] or drop me a tweet @nietovoice.

History: The Mighty Men Conferences

The first Green Business Platform (GBP) meeting was a playful one. it was hosted at Cotlands in turffontien and the attend-ees experienced the joys of making toys out of recycled material. This came after Jackie Schoeman, Cotlands CEO, shared the evolution of Cotlands, ex-plaining that the non-profit children organisa-tion were the pioneers of treating children for HIV. Four years ago they had to close down the hospice as they successfully had no HIV-related child deaths. With this their model was changed to focus on education, espe-cially the first 1000 days of a child’s life. With education as their core focus Schoeman spoke about how Cotlands’ toy librarians empower parents and Early Childhood Development Centres by teaching them how to make toys out of recycled materials. Thus fulfilling their role in making a greener planet. Cotlands checks its water meter every day, as the building is old and the pipes are under-

ground, which makes it hard to detect a water leak. An un-

detected water leak

once cost them R100 000, which could have been used for the children instead. Cotlands does not use air cons, even though every room has one. In winter every staff member is given a blanket instead of using heaters. The organisation monitors its carbon emis-sions as well.Apart from this educationally fun session of toy making, Karen Krakowitzer, CEO of Noah Sustainability, educated GBP attendees on how businesses can use NGOs to better their BEE score cards by using socio-economic development, enterprise development and black ownership. A full report on how to do this will be uploaded on the Klip-SA website.

Conviction successMondeor SAPS has experienced an increase of housebreakings cases being reported, especially on the dustbin collection days. The community is advised to be more vigilant as the streets become busy on these days. Dustbins should not be kept outside for long, as this confirms to the criminals that there is no one in the house. When collecting a dustbin you should make sure that there’s no one following you. Ask a neighbour to keep your dustbin temporarily if there’s no one who can take it into the yard.

Domestic Watch meetings

Clive Humphrey, Managing Director of ADT Central Region advises that all residents should get involved in their communities by getting to know their neighbourhoods and neighbours this year.“This is a vital defence mechanism in community security. Your neighbours are the closest in proximity to you when you are at home and are the most likely to be the first to identify a possible problem,” he said. Humphrey explained by knowing your neighbours’ daily routines and those of the domestic staff as well as the surroundings of the neighbourhood, it is easier to notice suspicious people, vehicles and activity. “We have seen successful crime prevention in suburbs where residents get actively involved in their communities. This leads to combined security implementation, which has a greater impact on an area than individual efforts do.”If neighbours start sharing security tips and reporting suspicious individuals or vehicles spotted in their area. Security providers and the SAPS can then get a better understanding of the activity in the area and implement effective crime prevention tactics. “You never know when you will need help or if anyone will be around when you do. Why not take the time to get to know at least two of your neighbours and get to know your neighbourhood better this year,” he said. Whether you’ve recently moved into a new area or have been living there for some time, meet with your neighbours and discuss ways to keep your families and homes safe.

Humphrey suggests touching on the following points during your discussion: • Start by exchanging cell phone numbers so that you are able to contact each other when necessary.• Agree to keep an eye on one another’s properties and to contact the other about suspicious people or when something appears out of place.• If either or both of you travel often or takes regular holidays, talk about doing small chores for each other while you are away. This includes removing mail from the post- box on a daily basis and switching on inside and outdoor lights so that your home does not appear unoccupied.

“It is also very important to introduce your children to your neighbours,” Humphrey said. “Agree to keep an eye on each other’s children when they are playing in the garden. Also, teach your children that if they are ever home alone and feel unsafe, they can go over to one of these neighbours and wait there until you can be contacted and can come home.” He added that another idea is to write the contact details of at least one or two of your neighbours on your list of emergency services’ numbers kept near the telephone. In the event that something happens to you or a loved one in your home, a neighbour can assist you until emergency services arrive.‘“By working together as each other’s eyes and ears, you, your neighbours, the SAPS and security providers can make your suburb a no-go zone for criminals,” he concludes.

The dance of passionit has been said that the tango provokes sensual tension between all men and women in the dance hall. With Valentines Day on Friday, Tango Fire - Flames of Desire is a must see for all couples. The skilled display of dexterity and craft seeps extravagantly from the stage. Tango Fire is an incredible show to watch. The choreographer seems to have pre-empted the need for variety in style, creating an exciting spectacle of Argentinean creativity. The choreography becomes progressively elaborate and dramatic. A little knowledge of tango is required, as it is an art form that demands some interpretation; ignorance could make one mistake the beautifully flowing movement as “rubbery-leg-dancing” with sultry dramatic pauses. Tango Fire is a series of various scenes - a patchwork of dances. The accompanying quartet is superb; filling the theatre with music that carries the audience to another continent where cigars and rich coffee mingle easily.Tango Fire is brought to you by the Tango Fore Company of Buenos Aires. These Argentinean dancers show South Africa just how sensual and passionate they get about dancing. Seat prices range from R100 to R250, and tickets are on sale by visiting www.joburgtheatre.com, or on 0861 670 670.

Twelve-year-old Monja Kruger, a Frances Vorwerg learner, was surprised last Thursday when a pink wheelchair was donated to her by Glenanda Primary grade 4 learners. The money was raised last year during a cake and candy day hosted by the current grade 4 learners (who were in grade 3 at the time). The wheelchair is a practical gift for Monja, as she has cerebral palsy and as she grew

walking has become harder, causing her to fall. This became especially bad when she was at school and had to carry her school bag as well.Monja’s smile showed how excited she was and once she got in to the wheelchair she had her first spin, knowing exactly how to work the controls.Mrs McKenzie, one of the grade 3 teachers said, “It is a great feeling to be able to touch people’s lives as well as making their dreams come true.”

Bellavista Computer Clubhouse has the great opportunity of sending three of their youths, as well as one adult coordinator, to the Teen Summit 2014 from 29 July to 3 August. It takes place in Boston, USA.The three youths that have been chosen are all learners of Die Fakkel High School - Bradwin Nettlingham (Gr 12), Amber De Bruin (Gr 10) and Caitlyn Valentine (Gr 8).

The 2014 Teen Summit will be closely integrated with the INTEL Computer Clubhouse Network’s Youth Leadership

initiative. Youth participants will take on integral leadership roles before and during the event, such as helping to design the Teen Summit 2014 theme and leading tracks and workshops. Bellavista Computer Club will benefit from the Teen Summit by having more concrete ways to implement youth leadership activities at home, and with applicable strategies to create change through youth leadership in the Bellavista community. This is an astounding opportunity for all three learners and it is definitely not to be missed. For this reason Bellavista Computer Clubhouse Teen Hub officer Salome Kanyane and Advisory Committee Chairperson Keith

Fourie call on the community to offer financial assistance. “The monies we are trying to raise are for their passports, visas as well as spending money. Due to the economic background of Bellavista it is unfair to ask the learners’ parents to come up with the funds,” Fourie said.tame TIMES will be interviewing the three learners in the coming weeks, so be sure to look out for the articles.

ADVERTORIAL

11 February 2014 Page 15

As from February, Makrosafe will be offering a full Health and Safety Certificate course that has specifically been put together to cater for students with little or limited knowledge about health and safety principles. The course will silence any complaint about ‘not enough professionals being available’.The disconnect between graduates and the workplace is enormous. This year alone, thousands of South African graduates are expected to enter the job market. But only a few will be lucky enough to find an appropriate job. Those who struggle will do so for many reasons, but even the lucky ones will experience difficulty in adapting to the workplace. This is because few colleges and universities manage to adapt quickly enough to lecture to an ever-changing market and to release students that meet industry’s demands. The health and safety industry isn’t much different from other industries with talks about ‘insufficient capacity or lack of trained professionals’ doing the rounds continuously. The Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course’s objective is to put together a programme that would appeal to and cater for a ‘lay-man-off-the-street’ and train him/her up to an entry level understanding of health and safety. The student should be able to apply the learning in a practical manner. The course aims to achieve this by

embedding knowledge and focusing more on the practical aspects to ensure the student can do the job, rather than aiming at seeing how well a person can memorise information provided and regurgitate that information on an examination paper. Once a student has completed the course, he or she will have the know-how and the experience required to perform the tasks. The course is based on adult outcomes based education principles. This gives the candidate the opportunity to network in a typical group environment, thereby understanding and gaining knowledge of various industries, hearing different views and opinions and improving his or her own communication skills. The course covers the full health and safety scope and includes aspects like legislation, functions of a Health and Safety Representative, principles of Health and Safety, risk assessment and implementation and evaluation of safety management programs. It is divided into different chapters. Each chapter can be presented individually and at a different time. This makes it possible to spread the course over a longer period, instead of being lectured for to 10 days consecutively. The content has been put together by a team of dedicated and experienced health and safety professionals, who are able to draw knowledge and information from the vast database Makrosafe has created since it joined the industry. The course is fully recognised and accredited by the Health and Welfare SETA. The course does not expire, as it is a skills program qualification, which does not require that refresher training for the particular unit standards have to be done. As accidents in the workplace occur every day, the South African industry can certainly do with more health and safety professionals. Since 2010, the government has already been calling on the business community to assist in creating another five million jobs in the coming years. If only a small percentage would attend the Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course, the call will be answered and the target will be met. More importantly, workplaces in South Africa would become a safer place.

Die Square Forklift Alberton Rugbyklub hou die naweek van 28 Februarie tot 2 Maart die Goue Leeus Provinsiale Sewestoernooi. Tussendeur die rugby gaan daar hope vermaak wees vir toeskouers en familie, wat tot laat in die nag gaan aanhou. Die klubhuis nooi alle belangstellendes uit om die naweek saam met hulle te kom kuier en baljaar.Die klubhuis se nuwe eienaars, Mark Assante en Stefan Fourie, het vier maande terug die klub oorgeneem. Van toe af tot nou het hulle al baie opknappingswerk gedoen. Hulle is onder andere besig om ‘n groot lapa te bou langs die rugbyveld, waar ouers en toeskouers gemaklik kan sit en kyk terwyl hulle kinders speel. Die klubhuis is oop Maandae tot Saterdae en op Woensdae en Donderdae het hulle musikante, soos Leon Shaw en Too Shay, om die gaste te vermaak. Volgens Assante beoog hulle om ‘n familie-georiënteerde omgewing te skep waar die gemeenskap gesellig bymekaar kan kom om ‘n vleisie te braai of kos te bestel en te kuier. Die naweek van die Sewestoernooi dien as ‘n platform waarop die klubhuis hierdie gees en atmosfeer van gemeenskap en familie kan bou. Suid-Afrikaanse musiek-kunstenaars is reeds bespreek vir die dag;

Vir meer inligting, kontak Mark Assante by 071 879 9263.

Folk music has become commercial over the past year with a number of folk singers becoming part of pop culture. It was only a matter of time before folk music reached film, and Ster-Kinekor being a trend setter gave us the opportunity to experience the folk world first hand last Wednesday night at a special screening of Inside Llewyn Davis at Rosebank Mall’s Cinema Nouveau. What better way to celebrate folk music than with our home-grown folk singer Matthew Mole, who performed an intimate set with a number of his famous hits such as Autumn. He also performed one of the prominent songs in the film called Hang Me, Oh Hang Me. Inside Llewyn Davis, a film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, known collectively as The Coen Brothers, centres on Llewyn Davis, a struggling Folk singer who just lost his singing partner, and how he tries to get a proper recording deal in the 1960s while battling life’s hardships at the same time.

The film is loosely based on true events. Stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan give us a real look at the life of a struggling artist in a not so popular genre of music and whether you like folk music or not, you can’t help but respect the genre in its entirety. The film has already been nominated for two Academy awards, making it a must see. And if you’re a fan, Justin Timberlake has a cameo in the film.

Karate champion off to Italy

Fifteen-year-old Mikéll van der Linde has been nominated to represent South Africa at the 7th JSKA World KarateChampionships in Terni, Italy. The tournament will take place from 14 to 19 May.Mikéll started karate at the age of

5 at the Kihon Karate club with Phillip Venter. For him this is not merely a hobby, but a possible profession. “I do not see my karate as a sport alone, but as a talent and gift that I received from God. It will be an honour to represent my country overseas as I was never financially able to in the past. Karate teaches a person self-discipline and I would love to carry this through to the youth of South Africa,” he explained.Mikéll’s parents realised that his karate was not merely a sport but a talent when, at the age

of 9, he qualified for the World Championships in Russia. He has qualified yearly for the World Championships as a result of his achievements. At the age of 11, when the world championships were held at Sun City, Mikell achieved a

gold and bronze medal. This year Mikell got double SA colours. The estimated amount to attend the tournament in Italy is R30 000, excluding his lunch and dinner, passport and pocket money. In addition, Mikéll has to prepare for the tournament every week in Pretoria, which is added petrol costs. It also excludes his gear for the events.

The family will appreciate any donations or sponsors that can assist him financially. The final amount must be paid by end of March.Donate to: Kihon KarateBank: First National BankBranch code: 254205Account number: 62176535452Reference: Mikéll van der Linde Contact details: Cecelia 074 416 9772; [email protected].

We all know that it is the avid cricket spectator paying at the gates that con-tribute to the cof-fers of all the Crick-

et Governing Bodies around the world. In one way or another, around the world, we have seen spectator numbers dwindle up and down in all formats of the game. I ask myself why the stadiums in general are half full, or even a quarter full, especially for Test Match Cricket and some of the ODI games across the globe. Can it be the cost of paying for a ticket to get through the turn-stile and enjoy what is on offer, or is it that we are spoiled with live television recordings? We stop and think, why bother going to the stadium when I can stay at home and watch the game? I am spoiled and can save on traveling costs, I can also check on what is currently happen-ing with all the other live games around the world from the comfort of lazy-boy with my re-mote. The ICC needs to rethink their market-ing of Test Match cricket if they want to move forward in the right direction, and get a bump in filled seats in all the Test Arenas. Australia seems to have the right formula as their stadiums are always brimming to the rafters. The KFC Big Bash is an example. Yes, granted that the Aussies have given the English a whipping in all formats of the game in the last few weeks, but you and I know one swallow does not make a summer. The or-ganisers of the next Cricket ODI World Cup have promised that they will make going to the game more affordable for the everyday man and will ensure that the stadiums are full. However, it was great to see that our National T20 final on Sunday, a great contest with the Dolphins beating the locals by 2 runs, had a packed Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Good luck to the Proteas tomorrow, who will hopefully experience a full-house crowd at Centurion Park with the first Test Match vs the Aussies.

Where have

all the crowds gone?
