LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The Town of Superior, in conjunction with the Superior Chamber of Commerce, is very proud of their Caboose Visitors Center, located on Highway 60. It’s unique looks, combined with a family park, drew over 1,169 visitors in just the past three winter months Volunteers put in 343 hours

during the same time period, to ensure that travelers were informed of Arizona’s wonderful sights and Superior’s charming shops and restaurants. We also have the adjacent History Trail of mining equipment, and, the locally designed ore cart as part of the Copper Corridor

Economic Development’s Ore Cart Trail. We are recruiting additional volunteers to staff the Caboose. The hours are weekdays from 12:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. We, especially, need a volunteer for Friday afternoons. If you are interested in volunteering, please call the Chamber Office at 520-689-0200.

We look forward to hearing from people who are committed to serving the Superior community. Thank you, /s/ Merrilee Kinney Part-Time Resident; Full-Time Supporter of Superior

Petitions calling for the recall of Superior Mayor Jayme Valenzuela were officially filed at the Superior Town Hall on the morning of April 11. The petition packet contained the signatures of 187 Superior registered voters, according to Nancy Vogler, a leader in the recall effort. The packet will now be submitted to the Pinal County Clerk’s Office, which will have 60 days to verify the signatures are legitimate and set the date of the recall election. Under state and county statutes, only 102 signatures are necessary to prompt a recall election. By submitting the recall packet with nearly double the required signatures in only half the time allotted for the task, citizens supporting the recall of Mayor Valenzuela hope that the recall election can be set at an early date, said Vogler, also an owner of Superior Sweets and a member of the Superior Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors. However, the Pinal County Clerk’s Office has indicated that it might set the recall as

late as November 8 to piggyback with the Presidential Election and thus save the cost of an additional election date. Superior has been in an uproar since it was revealed at the December 2015 Town Council meeting that Mayor Valenzuela allegedly misused the town debit card for personal cash withdrawals at assorted venues, including the Wild Horse Pass Casino in Chandler. Mayor Valenzuela admitted to making the eight withdrawals totaling $2,300 but said he made a mistake, and since he reimbursed the town would not resign despite calls from four council members and myriad citizens. In late January, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office has launched an

investigation to determine if prosecution is warranted. Agents visited the Superior Town Hall in early February to collect documents and other evidence related to the case. A spokesman for the Attorney General told the Superior Sun that the

investigation is still ongoing at this time. The probe prompted the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office to put Valenzuela on paid administrative reassignment from his day job as a commander in charge of contract and supplies with the County Detention Center in Casa Grande.

The sixth-ranked Superior baseball team had its modest three-game winning streak snapped after an 11 – 0 loss to No. 9 Miami last Thursday. Thursday’s game was the first time this season the Panthers’ failed to score a run.

Earlier in the week, the Panthers defeated Duncan 14 – 2 in a performance they’re more accustomed to so far this season. Jesus Castellanos, Eli Olmos, Nicolaus Cruz, and AJ Denogean each had two RBI in the lopsided win against the Wildkats. Cruz had three hits, including a double, and Olmos had two, as the Panthers pounded out nine hits in the game.

Olmos, a senior, picked up the victory after pitching five innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Austin Na-varrette, a junior, pitched a scoreless inning in relief, fanning two Wildkats’ hitters in the short appear-ance. Upcoming schedule: Apr. 14 at Ft. Thomas and Apr. 19 vs. Alchesay. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

The defending Division V state champion and top-ranked Superior softball team extended its winning streak to seven games after wins against Duncan and Miami earlier last week. The streak ended after a 16 – 6 loss last Friday to Apache Junction, the sixth-ranked team in Division III. The loss was only the second of the season for Lady Panthers, who are now 14 – 2. Phalicitee Thomas, Gabby Salcido, and Lindsay Ketron each homered in the Lady Panthers’ lopsided 25 – 5 win at Duncan last Tuesday. Thomas, a senior, had three hits in as many at bats and drove in three runs in the win. Salcido, a Paradise Valley CC commit, went 3-for-4 including a double in addition to her seventh homerun of the season. The Lady Panthers’

Defending champs rolling despite small bump in the roadshortstop also had two RBI, tying Thomas with 24 RBI to lead the team. Ketron, a freshman, also had three RBI in the game. Yuvithzia Romero, a sophomore, had two hits and four RBI in the win while Alicia Arriola and Ariana San Miguel also had two hits apiece.

Arriola pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit despite surrendering two unearned runs. She walked four and struck out seven Wildkats’ hitters. Upcoming schedule: Apr. 14 at Ft. Thomas and Apr. 19 vs. Alchesay. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

Superior Historical Society

We all have a history, a story that makes us unique and stand apart from the crowd. Even standing next to our sibling or first cousin, even though we

may share the same family story or genetics, we each have our own history, our own little mark on this world. Communities are no different. There was a founder – someone who decided, “This is the place I will settle or grow a business.” Maybe it’s a landmark or transportation hub that gives a community it’s unique story. However just like your own personal story, if no one knows about it or you don’t share it with the younger generations, how will your story be carried on? Superior’s history is kept, recorded and maintained by a non-profit organization known as the Superior Historical Society. The society was founded in the late 1980s after the Superior Museum Association closed. The Superior Historical Society worked with the Town of Superior to develop the Bob Jones Museum at 300 Main St. in Superior. The home of the museum was the home of former Governor Bob Jones, who was Arizona’s sixth Governor. After much hard work and financial investment by donors to the museum Superior finally had a home for the history of the community. Another project that the Superior Historical Society collaborated and constructed was the Mining History Trail and the Copper Corridor Ore Cart public art tribute to miners at the US 60 Park. What does this organization need: The historical museum is ran completely by volunteers, their board members and members of the organization. Society President Richard Hing explained that the group needs more volunteers to help keep the museum open and help with fundraisers. Currently the only income that the museum received are the annual dues from members, profits from their cookbook and history DVD sales and donations that are received by visitors to the museum. Membership to the society is $15.00 for individuals or $20 for family memberships, annually. Members receive a monthly newsletter highlighting activities at the museum and Superior history.Leading the way: The volunteers leading the way at the museum are President, Richard Hing, Vice President Tony Solis, Secretary Holly Mutchie, Treasurer Rita Wentzel and board members David Lira, Landis Deffenbaugh, Michael Hing, Pat Brown, Leslie Martin and Jim Rutledge. The museum is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.The “In Your Biz” column is sponsored weekly by the Superior Chamber of Commerce in an effort to further promote their business members. To learn more about the Superior Chamber of Commerce you can visit their website www.superiorarizonachamber.org or call them at 520-689-0200. The Chamber meets the third Wednesday of every month at their building 165 Main St. in Superior, Arizona.

The Bob Jones Museum is located at 300 Main St. and is the home of the Superior Historical Society. The wall surrounding the property has become a bit of a public art project. Take time to check out all the little treasures on the rock wall. Mila Besich-Lira | Sun

The Superior High School FCCLA hosted its 7th Annual Cancer Fight by Candlelight event this past Saturday. Luminarias lined Sunset Drive in memory of those who passed from Cancer, honoring those fighting a battle with Cancer and celebrating those who have survived a battle with Cancer. The walk commenced at the Superior Memorial Football field where

participants walked one last lap then settled in for entertainment and speeches. This year the FCCLA recognized Florence Aldrete who is now cancer free and fought a battle with stage four cancer. Florence thanked the people of Superior for supporting and helping her during her battle. Allysia Perea along with her siblings Miranda and Dominic shared their story of losing their mother to

cancer a few years ago during their teenage years. They shared the heart break of losing their mother and how they have overcome their grief with positive memories of their mom. The names of survivors and those fighting were read during the ceremony and a balloon ceremony memorializing those who lost their battle cancer ended the evening following a performance by

Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior. A representative from the Relay for Life Cobre Valley explained that the money raised at this event goes to the American Cancer Society and is distributed throughout the community to those fighting cancer. The funds help to provide transportation to treatments, wigs and other services that cancer patients also need.
