    SY 2011-2012

    Course Description

This course will enable students to understand the major principles of Chemistry based onestablished GDOE content standards. Students will discover through service, research, instruction and self-

discovery how Chemistry applies to our daily lives, environment and their future careers. Knowledge shallbe acquired through a multi-instructional approach integrating literacy, technology, multimedia, physical

laboratory assignments, science and social perspectives, scientific inquiry and the history and nature of

    science.

    Course Objectives

Students will: Develop technical reading and writing skills through Chemistry Develop essay-writing skills to clearly develop and sustain scientific ideas and hypothesis. Develop research methods, qualifying scientific sources and properly cited those resources. Develop mathematical problem solving strategies common in Chemistry including measurement,

ratios, algebra and others math skills.

Develop computer literacy skills through use of simulation software, Spreadsheets, WordProcessing, online applications and others.

Develop work place ethics and skills through laboratory experimentation and community service.

    Grading PolicyAssessment Strategies

Formative: Expect a short 1-2 problem assessment EVERY CLASS MEETING.

Summative: Expect to perform at least one of the following throughout the school year:Literacy Projects to include: 5-paragraph essays, Written Lab Reports, Personal or

Group multi-media Presentations (utilizing MS Power point), Personal or GroupProjects and others.

Exams to include: Short answer/essay, Cloze, Problem solving.Labs to include: Computer simulations, physical experiments, data collection, data

analysis, predictions, lab reports and others.

Evaluation: Grading Scale based on GDOE:

    Labwork/Projects 60% A= 90-100% Quizzes (daily) 5% B= 80-89% Exams 25% C= 70-79% Service Learning 10% D= 60-69%

    F= 0-59%

maintenance tasks such as cleaning, organizing taking inventory or preparing materials for upcoming labexperiments.

    Citizenship

Excellent (E), Satisfactory (S), Needs Improvement (N), or Unsatisfactory (U). An unsatisfactory willprohibit the student from pursuing sports and athletics. Minor infractions consist of reminders of class

rules such as eating or drinking in class, use of inappropriate language, or use of electronic devices that notpermitted. Major infractions are those listed in the Student Handbook that warrants suspension.
