Welcome to Toronto's Jewish PeoplehoodProfessional Development Seminar!

The UJA - Federation of Greater Toronto and Beit Hatfutsot - The Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv are thrilled to come together with Toronto's Jewish community's leading educators to experience, learn, explore and connect. This year, we are celebrating the centennial of the UJA – Federation of Greater Toronto, marking 100 years of commitment and community. Marking this occasion, Toronto's Jewish educators are assembling for a joint experience of professional development and Jewish Peoplehood.

The seed to this seminar was planted in January 2016. During the UJA's Israel Engagement Mission to Israel, several community educators participated in a day-long professional development series with senior educators from Beit Hatfusot – The Museum of the Jewish People. The common values, sense and methods of educating towards Jewish Peoplehood inspired them to bring the experience of Beit Hatfusot to the greater Toronto educational community.

On Wednesday, February 15th and Thursday, February 16th, over 750 professionals from Jewish day schools will be coming together to explore the broad concept of Jewish Peoplehood. This city-wide Jewish day school unique experience will be an opportunity for educators to come together to engage in personal and collective reflection, contemplation and grappling.

Beit Hatfutsot - The Museum of the Jewish People is more than a museum. It is a national center for Jewish communities in Israel and worldwide, which tells the unique and ongoing story of the Jewish people. It is also a story in constant renewal. Beit Hatfutsot provides the next generation a key to understanding their Jewish identity and to reinforcing their sense of belonging to the Jewish people. The exhibits, educational programs, events and archival center of the museum convey the fascinating narrative of the Jewish people and the essence of Jewish culture, faith, purpose and deeds, while presenting the contribution of the Jewish people to humanity.

The International School for Jewish Peoplehood Studies (ISJPS) at Beit Hatfutsot educates towards a sense of belonging and commitment to the Jewish people that reflects itself in action. Our mission is promoting Jewish Peoplehood, strengthening one’s Jewish identity and connecting worldwide Jewish communities so that everyone feels a part of the broader ongoing story of the Jewish people. Innovative and inclusive, the ISJPS is the sole educational center focused centrally on the experience of being a part of the Jewish people, in all its depth and diversity.Faced with a growing global disconnect that divides Jews - geographically, religiously and culturally – the ISJPS offers a vast range of creative programs and original resources all built to emphasize the unifying elements and common denominators shared by Jews from all corners of the world. Through this, we strive to promote a substantive, impassioned and shared vision of Jewish life, in which the entire Jewish people feels connected, validated and engaged.

UJA’s Israel Engagement cultivates meaningful relationships and endures bonds between Israelis and Jews worldwide through people to people interactions. These relationships lead to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of contemporary Israel. They create the opportunity for heterogeneous, complex and active connection points with Israel and Israeli society. As a result, individuals increase their sense of connection and commitment to Jewish Peoplehood.

Jewish Peoplehood offers powerful tool for cultivating a deep connection and sense of Jewish belonging in people of all ages and backgrounds. Rooted in the Torah and lived through thousands of years of history, Jewish Peoplehood can unlock personal Jewish connections, open the door to Jewish civilization and inspire action. We believe Jewish Peoplehood entails the knowledgeable identification and commitment to the Jewish People. The International School for Jewish Peoplehood Studies at Beit Hatfutsot has taken upon itself to promote and enhance knowledge, understanding, awareness and experience of contemporary Jewish identity, and engage Jews from around the world with the unique and ongoing story of the Jewish People. Throughout the plenary and break-outs we will be grappling with the essential question of what it means to be a part of a people. As educators taking part in shaping the hearts and minds of young Jewish Canadians, is Peoplehood an important concept to embrace and internalize? And if so, why?

Paradigm Shifts: Dreaming about Jewish Peoplehood Rabbi Talia Avnon-Benveniste

This introductory lecture explores the shifting paradigms of Jewish communal identity while presenting the thematic framework for pragmatic use. During the presentation, we will trace the transformative stages of Jewish identity from the destruction of the Second Temple until today through the concepts of exile, diaspora and Jewish Peoplehood. Questions raised include, what is a people and why are the Jews characterized as one? What does this paradigmatic shift entail and what are its effects? What does this mean for a central Jewish organization, which is in the forefront of the change?

A film workshop with lecturer and screenwriter Galit Roichman, which includes viewing and analyzing contemporary Israeli features and documentaries, capturing a collection of Israeli narratives, ethos and identities. Galit explores the use of film to exemplify Jewish Peoplehood in Israeli film, as a way of connecting, teaching and reflecting on the topic.

My Family Story Ron Merkel

High tech and history come together when Jewish students and seniors are paired for mutual learning and dual benefit. Adults broaden their Internet and computer skills, while young students learn the value of personal and collective narratives. Together they build closer intergenerational connections and share life experiences while enriching their Jewish identity, history, collective memory and technical skills. This concept explores intergenerational programming in the classroom, as a way to connect students to the greater story of the Jewish people via personal encounters.

Throughout the Jewish world, students research their genealogy and write their heritage stories. My Family Story goes beyond the typical family tree. It marks a defining moment in the lives of Jewish youth around the world when they are challenged for the first time to find their own, personal and unique story that emphasizes their Jewish identity. Together with their families, they create remarkable artistic installations that capture the essence of their Jewish traditions heirlooms, language and stories. This methodology provides a hands-on way of artistically sharing Jewish heritage and promoting the historical memory of the Jewish people in an interactive program. The platform encourages ways to involve the whole family in research and creativity and provide opportunities to highlight Jewish Peoplehood events in the local community.

Replicas of Beit Hatfutsot’s best collections are re-formatted into an interactive educational mobile museum kit, to be discussed and appreciated by the community. This resourceful and hands-on project comprises collections: Images of Canadian Jewry – showcasing rare photographs spanning decades of Jews in Canada throughout the 20th century, and United Colors of Judaica – featuring popular Israeli and international artist Eliahou Eric Bokobza. The kit and its approach can be adapted in various ways in classroom and community, providing guidelines to deepen discussions on Jewish identity and to address Jewish Peoplehood concepts, such as history, practice, values and creativity.

An artistic interactive educational program, using photography, challenges Jewish youth to question and express their perception of Jewish identity, values and community. In partnership with American-Israeli photographer, Zion Ozeri, this initiative combines a variety of his creative work with an engaging educational program and social media to connect young people both intellectually and emotionally with Jewish Peoplehood. Students take photos with a creative touch, portraying their connection to the Jewish people. Today's culture of selfies, constant uploads and visual communication come alive in the Jewish Peoplehood context, as a very easy and accessible resource in a worldwide Jewish framework.

This workshop aims to provide unique methodology through the prism of Jewish Peoplehood by posing the following questions: Why is preserving and strengthening the connection between the Jewish people and Israel important? How can Israel become a vital element of a Jewish identity and how can meaningful engagement with Israel take place through Jewish education?Using texts and visual materials, this workshop will focus on personal connection to Israel as a multidimensional concept, providing opportunities to address this pillar of Jewish Peoplehood in a new and dynamic context.

An innovative program that inspires young students to ask, “What does it take to be a hero?” and “Who are my own personal heroes?” while firmly rooted in the context of Jewish identity, meaning and the recurring theme of strength over adversity.“Jewish Super-Heroes” workshop inspires young people with epic stories of great Jewish leaders, while presenting Jewish values in a fresh, accessible and exciting way. The objective of the program is that students learn that Jewish heroes teach us Jewish ways of life; providing us with practical knowledge, motivation and a Jewish approach to achievements, struggles, thinking and doing, in a way that is relevant to every person, everywhere, at any time. This program is based on the new exhibition at Beit Hatfutsot: “Heroes – Trailblazers of the Jewish People”.
