Dear Friends,

In 2012, Jewish Family Service touched more than 21,000 lives. We helped thousands of people overcome difficult life challenges so that they could go on to live fuller, more meaningful lives. While these are impressive numbers, our work is not about numbers. It’s about people—real people with real needs.

Every day, the staff and volunteers of Jewish Family Service help people overcome difficult life challenges so they can live life again. We help children succeed in school, help seniors live safely and independently at home, and give people with disabilities a chance to work and lead productive lives. We help keep families together and in their homes—with food on their table.

Jewish Family Service impacts our community in countless life-changing ways. This report includes stories about just a few of the many people whose lives have been transformed by the programs and services we offer. From a boy learning to live with Asperger’s disorder to a woman who overcame addictions and a life on the streets, each is a story of hope. Real hope.

In 2012, we celebrated 140 years of service to the greater Denver community. What started as the Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society in 1872 has expanded into one of the premier human services agencies in the Rocky Mountain West. While we remain close to our Jewish roots, our impact touches all, regardless of race, faith, gender, sexual orientation, or economic need. We are proud to support the Denver metro community.

Alan Mayer2012 Board Chair

Yana Vishnitsky President and CEO

In 2013, we are launching a new, forward-thinking, three-year strategic plan that focuses on maximizing our strengths to meet growing community needs. The Board of Directors and our dedicated staff have worked diligently to deliver a thoughtful plan that is well aligned with our mission, vision, and guiding principles. We will deliver innovative services to our growing senior population. We will continue to enhance our mental health expertise to serve families in need. And we will work to help people in need to become truly self-sufficient.

We thank you for your ongoing and loyal support of Jewish Family Service—and for your trust in us to deliver real hope to our community.

B’shalom,

JFS Senior Solutions made great strides in 2012, furthering its support of vulnerable seniors in our community. The department supported 234 seniors with 3,677 hours of homemaker services. Another 411 older adults received care management support.

Our expert staff of geriatric professionals is focused on helping older adults to continue to live safely and independently in their own homes by providing a continuum of care that enhances their well-being and ensures that they are not isolated.

Our JFS Colorado Senior Connections in Edgewater program has become a model for senior services, with a full range of activities, classes, and services that are keeping older adults active and engaged. In all, the program served 287 seniors with 45 different activities over the course of the year. In 2012, JFS launched an innovative mentoring program that links seniors with at-risk high school students to help them succeed at school.

The JFS at the JCC program, a partnership with the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center, Shalom Cares, and Volunteers of America, offers an important social outlet for Jewish seniors with daily kosher meals, meaningful activities, and day trips. JFS at the JCC served 526 seniors with 55 different activities in 2012. Funding for the program was threatened in the spring of 2012, but generous donors stepped forward and have ensured the long-term viability of the program.

Boulder JFS served 315 senior clients in 2012 with case management, Shabbat and holiday services in residential facilities, and volunteer visitors. Eighty-four volunteers contributed 1,134 hours of service, providing companionship and an important Jewish connection to isolated seniors. The Boulder JFS staff expanded its reach and now offers Jewish services at 21 area senior residential facilities. In addition, Boulder JFS started a grief group in partnership with HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties to support those who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

JFS at Home, a fee-based homecare service for seniors, saw significant growth in clients and strengthened Jewish Family Service’s position as a quality homecare agency. JFS at Home served 106 clients and provided more than 40,000 hours of homecare services.

JFS Senior Solutions is doing more with less. We have seen a decrease in state and federal grants, as well as private funding, at a time of rising need. To compensate, we are looking at improving efficiencies and concentrating on activities that can provide the greatest benefit to the clients we serve.

As the baby boomer generation enters retirement, the Denver metro area will see a dramatic increase of adults over 60 years of age, and they will need support services. JFS Senior Solutions is committed to meeting those needs.

Moving forward, our efforts will be focused on providing services to all seniors in need. We will expand our programs that connect seniors to community and reduce their isolation.

Comfortable and cared forRegina Furberg, 87, deserves only the best. She’s paid her dues—and then some. She survived the horrors of the Holocaust, losing more than 300 members of her family, including her parents, grandparents, and seven of her siblings. She spent five years in four different concentration camps from ages 12 to 17, and somehow made it out alive.

Today, Regina is comfortable and well cared for. She has been a JFS client for 10 years and her care manager looks after her to make sure she has everything she needs. A JFS at Home personal care assistant visits every day to help her with dressing, bathing, shopping, cooking, and housework.

Her JFS care manager helped her access needed monthly pension funds from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. She and her husband had never applied for restitution because he was a proud man and considered it “blood money” from the death of their parents.

But after her husband died following a long illness, Regina was facing financial hardship and needed some help. Her JFS care manager worked diligently to get her on the pension, even though the deadlines had long passed. It’s a very complicated process, but Regina now receives the funds that she needs to get by. It’s made a huge difference in her quality of life.

“Jewish Family Service has been very good to me. The staff has never refused me anything. I am so grateful to my care worker, Mirella, for getting me the German pension funds. It’s made such a difference for me.”

Jewish Family Service provides mental health services to help people improve their quality of life. We partner with clients, families, and the community to create opportunities to achieve life balance and emotional wellness and stability. Our team of skilled therapists is committed to helping improve the lives of those struggling with mental health issues, from depression, to posttraumatic stress, to loss, to family and relationship issues.

The JFS Counseling Center is a trusted resource for high-quality therapy and support. We assist people at all stages of life with caring, compassionate, and confidential psychological counseling. We offer family therapy, relationship counseling, and help individuals deal with depression, grief, anxiety, or loss.

In 2012, the JFS Counseling Center provided 3,052 hours of therapy to 607 clients. Our biweekly Strength Through Sharing support group helps those who are dealing with persistent mental illness in their families.

We are making our community a safer, healthier place by making quality mental health services more accessible to those who need them, including schoolchildren, isolated seniors, and those who are uninsured.

Our innovative KidSuccess program places trained therapists in area schools, providing children and adolescents access to quality counseling services so they can succeed. We are fostering school achievement, self-esteem, and positive social development. In 2012, KidSuccess operated in 10 public schools in Denver, providing mental health services to more than 800 children and adolescents.

Refugee children have very different needs as they struggle to adjust to school and life in the United States. The International KidSuccess program is working in a variety of schools, giving refugee students a place to belong and the tools to adjust and succeed in school. More than 530 refugee students participated over the course of the 2011–2012 school year, and the program has been expanded to reach even more schools this year.

The JFS Jewish Community Chaplaincy program focuses on providing direct spiritual care to those who are ill, in crisis, or near the end of their lives—in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health institutions, correctional facilities, or at home. In 2012, we visited 757 seniors in hospitals and nursing homes, and conducted three bereavement groups. The JFS Community Chaplaincy program provided an important Jewish connection to hundreds of isolated members of the community.

No one knewThree years ago, Liam Dunkin was a first grader at Denver’s Ashley Elementary School. He was exhibiting behaviors that were disruptive and aggressive, which limited his ability to learn. Fits of rage…threatening his classmates... sensitivity to touch and sound… and not responding to normal social cues were some of the behaviors that were bringing Liam negative attention.

Something was wrong. Liam’s parents didn’t know what to do. He had already been to two previous schools and Ashley Elementary was his second placement as a first grader.

Kate Seymour Andres, a JFS KidSuccess school-based counselor at Ashley, recognized Liam’s behaviors as possible symptoms of Asperger’s disorder. She encouraged his parents to have him evaluated. It was confirmed that Liam indeed has Asperger’s—a less intensive form of autism.

While the family was initially hesitant to have Liam labeled with a diagnosis, it was the beginning of an important family journey. Liam could begin to understand his issues and work to overcome them. He’s working on his interactions with others and controlling his emotions. Liam’s family understands his limitations and knows how to manage them.

As a result of his diagnosis, Liam received an individualized education plan at his school and now receives daily support, both academically and emotionally. He has weekly sessions with the school psychologist and with Kate, so he can talk through his feelings and understand how to handle triggers that upset him. He participates in a fun “lunch bunch” group, where he practices social skills.

With a strong support system in place, Liam has made huge strides at school. He is active in acting and music classes and has made a number of close friends. Although he continues to need daily support, he’s performing much better. Liam feels understood and supported.

This was a year of growth and change for SHALOM Denver and the JFS Disability and Employment Services program.

We served 486 TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) clients, with 377 receiving valuable training and work experience at internships at more than 50 Denver-area employers. Of those 377 clients, 124 TANF recipients moved off welfare and into steady employment. Given our success, the Denver Department of Human Services, Office of Economic Development, not only renewed our contract for 2012–2013, but is providing us with free office space at its location so that we can provide expanded services to even more clients. Over the past year, SHALOM Denver developed ongoing employment opportunities for more clients than any other TANF contractor agency in Denver, an accomplishment of which we are extremely proud.

At our SHALOM Denver facility, we served more than 100 people with developmental disabilities daily, both in prevocational programming and community-connecting activities. SHALOM Denver went through a formal restructuring, eliminating “sheltered workshop” services and developing “prevocational services” in their place. Clients are learning new skills to improve their work habits by working on packaging, mailing, and assembly contracts with more than 200 local and national companies.

This was our best year ever, with $292,000 in contract sales, the vast majority going to client wages. In addition to learning new skills—by performing real work for real businesses—trainees attended classroom sessions to better develop their social and safety skills. These activities prepare our clients for more integrated employment opportunities in the community.

Under this new format, SHALOM Denver has developed a new horticultural training enterprise in concert with ARC Thrift Stores of Colorado. ARC provides hundreds of planter pots and containers to SHALOM Denver, and in turn, SHALOM trainees pot beautiful plants in the containers and sell them to 11 metro-area ARC Thrift Stores. ARC customers are buying our SHALOM “Peace Planters” as fast as they get into the stores.

Our enclave program (a work crew of eight clients with a SHALOM supervisor) at Xcel Energy is celebrating 20 years of service. We are focusing on expanding this program to other area businesses to put people with developmental disabilities into the workforce in a truly meaningful way.

Our Jewish Disabilities Network helped more than 100 Denver Jewish family members with disabilities by providing financial and programmatic resources and activities. And our group home continues to provide a wonderful kosher home environment, ongoing daily life enrichment, and Jewish cultural activities for eight residents with developmental disabilities and their families.

A happy, productive lifeFifty-one-year-old Wayne Barela has been a participant in Jewish Family Service’s SHALOM Denver program for the past 27 years. He has a developmental disability as well as a dislocated hip that restricts him to a wheelchair.

None of this has limited Wayne’s ability to work and live a happy, productive life.

Every day, Wayne goes to work at Xcel Energy, where he is a member of a SHALOM Denver–sponsored “enclave” team. These teams work on-site at area businesses performing essential functions. Wayne and his enclave group—who all have developmental disabilities—work in the mailroom at Xcel Energy, helping with a variety of projects, including folding, sorting, and processing newsletters.

Wayne is good at what he does and his work is appreciated. “Wayne’s been working at Xcel Energy for the last 17 years,” says Holly Schubert, enclave supervisor. “He’s very skilled at what he does. He works fast and has a great attitude. I can count on Wayne to get the job done, no matter what.”

Wayne is a happy guy and it shows in his magnetic smile. He loves his job at Xcel Energy, and especially the opportunity to interact with his coworkers. He’s developed friendships with people throughout the company over the years.

In spite of his personal challenges, SHALOM Denver taught Wayne the skills he needed to function well at work and in the greater community. His life has purpose—and he’s making a living.

The JFS Family Safety Net program provides case management, food, and emergency financial aid to individuals and families in crisis. We help people in need access benefits and additional community resources, and provide case management to help clients to identify and overcome barriers to self-sufficiency. Our goal is to prevent homelessness and help our clients achieve long-term stability.

In fiscal year 2012, the Weinberg Food Pantry distributed nearly 500,000 pounds of food to low-income households. We served 216 households with $235,000 in emergency financial assistance, including rent, utilities, transportation, and medical costs. We directly benefited 525 people, preventing them from becoming homeless.

Our focus over the past year was to be more purposeful and holistic in our services, looking at all the factors that impact our clients and not simply providing emergency relief. When clients come to us for food and financial aid, it presents an excellent opportunity to provide outreach services, case management, and referrals so they don’t need assistance in the future.

The special services we provided include helping clients apply for food stamps and providing monthly cooking classes that showcase healthy recipes using food available in our pantry. We also helped clients update their résumés and find work through the JFS Employment Resource Alliance. And we assisted clients in applying for Medicaid for themselves and their children.

As we struggled to meet increasing community needs with diminishing government and foundation funding, we were very fortunate to receive a significant long-term funding commitment from some extremely generous private donors. With their help, we will be able to continue to serve our community and prevent homelessness for hundreds of families and individuals for years to come.

As we look to the future, the Family Safety Net department will enhance its homeless prevention services with case management and an increased focus on the needs of the “whole” client to better understand and confront barriers to self-sufficiency. We will be implementing new tracking methods and systems to measure our impact in helping our at-risk clients succeed.

From the bottom up Bernadine James, 54, has lived a hard life, lost in an abyss of alcohol and drug addiction. She started drinking heavily at age 17. At 32, her brother and sister “turned her on” to crack cocaine, launching a habit that would consume her for the next 14 years.

She lost her home, her children, and almost her life. She spent years living on Colfax Avenue, where she was on a first-name basis with the police. She was arrested several times, including for a drug charge, and spent time in jail. She watched her sister die from her own drinking problems.

“It was pure hell,” laments Bernadine. “A desperate time. I was on a death mission.”

Bernadine came clean in 2002, but when her niece passed away two years later, she had a relapse. She was drunk and came face-to-face with a familiar police officer while still on probation. She ended up in jail again. For Bernadine, that was the end. “I was done,” she says. She hasn’t used or had a drink since.

Bernadine was recovering from her addictions when a coworker told her about Jewish Family Service. “JFS was a safe haven for me. The staff helped me know that I was going to be okay. The agency helped me with rent, utilities, career counseling, and even helped me get glasses and new teeth. It’s been such a blessing. I’m forever grateful.”

Today Bernadine has a different story to tell. She’s been clean for eight years and loves her life. She works at a drug and alcohol treatment facility, where she helps counsel people who are struggling with addictions. She’s good at it because she’s been there.

“I have a job that pays my bills and rewards my heart,” she says. I like my life now. I like that my children trust me again. I’m grateful that I have clean friends, who I enjoy having dinner with. I’m making it and I have a future.”

Volunteers are an essential resource for Jewish Family Service. Their impact is immeasurable, not only for the agency, but for the community as a whole. Volunteers significantly extend the reach of our staff and allow us to fulfill our mission of service to the vulnerable in our community.

The Volunteer Services program engages volunteers in meaningful, fulfilling opportunities to offer expertise and work directly with clients. Whether it’s working in the Weinberg Food Pantry, serving as a Friendly Visitor to an isolated senior, or supporting our fundraising events, there are multiple ways that individuals, families, and organizations can help make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

In 2012, we were fortunate to have the dedication of more than 850 hard-working volunteers who gave selflessly to the agency and its clients.

• 858 volunteers contributed 20,702 hours of service.

• 355 food pantry volunteers spent 5,500 hours sorting, stocking, and distributing nearly 500,000 pounds of food.

• 59 para-chaplain volunteers gave 2,357 hours of their time to provide a Jewish connection to isolated Jews and Holocaust survivors.

• Para-chaplain service leaders conducted 287 holiday and Shabbat services for more than 2,400 residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.

• 59 Friendly Visitor volunteers in Denver and Boulder provided nearly 3,000 hours of companionship to senior clients.

• 28 volunteers gave 1,760 hours of consultation and professional expertise to many projects benefiting the agency.

From Friendly Visitor to lasting friendship Howard Bellowe was looking for something meaningful to do with his free time. He contacted Jewish Family Service and signed up to be a Friendly Visitor volunteer to help support a senior in need. The program matches volunteers with seniors, reducing their risk of isolation while helping them maintain their independence.

Richard Betka, 66, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease five years ago and finally needed some help with day-to-day living. Richard heard about the Friendly Visitor program and contacted JFS. He was linked up with Howard, launching a wonderful friendship.

Howard has always been interested in photography and Richard was a professional photographer. That mutual interest became the backbone of their relationship. They take frequent daytrips to scenic spots around Denver to shoot photos.

Richard’s wife is able to take him to his doctor appointments, but it’s Howard who gets him out of the house for a little fun. He now has the opportunity to stay active and do many things that he normally wouldn’t do. “Thanks to Howard, I don’t have to give in to this disease,” says Richard.

When the weather is nice, they go for walks. They also enjoy tinkering on computers. One of their biggest thrills was attending a Nuggets game against the L.A. Lakers. It was the first time Richard had ever seen a live NBA game. It was an experience he will never forget. Best of all, “the Nuggets creamed the Lakers!” exclaims Richard.

“Howard means a lot to me,” says Richard. “In addition to getting me out and doing things, his visits give my wife a little freedom to run her own errands. He’s a big help.”

It’s a two-way relationship. “Seeing Richard happy and smiling makes me feel great, says Howard. “I get a lot of satisfaction out of our friendship.”
