We have been noticing quite a few of the old faces around town back from the wars. We hope that this is some criterion (Honest, that came from me) of a near war ending.

HOME ON LEAVES AND FURLOUGHS: “Yudy” Turesky, Louie Black, Lennie Stein, Libbie Diamon Kaatz, Henry Cutler and Phil Gerber. Phil really pulled a funny one. On his arrival to the States, he cutely picked up the telephone and called his home. You can imagine the feeling that Mrs. Gerber had when she picked up the receiver and heard Phil’s voice. He quietly told his ma that he got a ride from Italy to Florida and another ride from Florida to Devens. Planes are quite the fashion today. “Glad to have ya back, Phil.”

LETTERS AND ALL: Jerry Sheriff from Germany writes: “Sent home a package to my mom and included a German flag which I thought might serve as a souvenir for the Center. You’ll find it a bit tattered, but if you think that’s bad you ought to catch a glimpse of the building we took it from. So, at your earliest convenience, get in touch with Mother and she will have the flag for you. Give my regards to all in Portland and I hope before many more weeks pass, we’ll be together.” (Jerry, that will be quite a souvenir for the Center—the German flag—and I for one am going to make a suggestion to have some kind of a room for all these things that the gang will send back. Thanx.) . . . Izzy Solomon writes us from Virginia and says that in his travels he has only met one Portland fellow that used to work with him. This all happened when he was in New Guinea, but he failed to mention who this fellow was. So, if you fellows know Izzy and if you know where he worked and if you know the guy that worked with him, then you know the guy. (For crying out loud, Izzy, the next time don’t make me go through this whole business. All you have to do is give us the fella’s name. If the folks don't understand this, it will all be your fault.)

Paul Lane from Italy writes: “Gee, Eddie, long time no see, so let’s hope this is going to be V YEAR. Some one of these days with this Rotation and furloughs going on, I may walk into the Center and go back to my old sport of basketball and start calling time outs. Tell Dean Silverman to give us some dope on the goings on regarding Center and High School Basketball.” (Paul, that Is what the guy has been doing for the past four months. Unless he doesn’t know how to express himself. Here’s the sum- up, Portland lost to Waterville in the State Championship game, therefore Waterville competes in the N. E. Tourney, the same as last year.) . . . Found a note in my box saying that Pfc. Milton Erlick was seriously wounded in France on February 12. For any further information, I’ll have to delve into this more thoroughly.

Jackie Schwartz writes: “At present I’m stationed in Paris and I’m certainly making the most of it. No need for me to tell you the beauties of the city. (I wonder what kind of beauties he’s talking about.) I was happy in reading that fellows like Irv Herman and Mickey Schultz are back in the States. We must all certainly take our hats off to them. It is funny, when I was in England I saw quite a few of the Portland boys and now I have yet to see a single one. I wish that, if any of the boys are in Paris they would get in touch with me at the Seine Section Headquarters. Look up my telephone number, give me a ring and I’ll take on from there.” (Jackie, take care of the wine and women there, that you mentioned that you are not interested in. Forgive me.) . . . Norman Rosen in a letter to his folks, from Hawaii, writes: “You could do me a favor and tell the people at the Center that we have (meaning Warren Mersky) and I’m very grateful to the ‘Bulletin’ for making the meeting possible. I’m a very happy boy with Warren around. There’s a possibility that we may meet up with Bobby Oransky in the near future, and that will be some reunion.”

AROUND THE TOWN: Harold “Proportionately” Nelson has been named chairman of the Men’s Division in the coming Federation drive. (I always wanted to know what the P stood for in Harold’s name.) . . . Sidney “Toonkle Moonkle” Davidson giving a steam job to everyone he meets at the Center. Always stirring it up and then hot footing away from the scene. Weekly at the Center Men’s Club suppers, some of the boys are usually asked to take on a waiter’s job for the following week's supper. Sidney’s answer always is, “I won’t be able to make it as I’ll be in

May I take this occasion to congratulate you upon your election as Chairman of the National War Veterans’ Council and to wish you success in this new and important responsibility.

Much benefit could result from the extension of this cooperation on a local level and I am sure that the B’nai B’rith Lodges and the Jewish War Veterans’ Posts will be able to find increased opportunities for collaboration.

With cordial regards,Sincerely yours,

HENRY MONSKY.

AT HIS SIDE+Bangor.” He has yet to miss a dinner and he has yet to be a waiter. What a guy! I . . . Attended a Center Youth meeting the other day and was my face red. Future congressmen, senators, and representatives are certainly in that group. Parliamentary law is kicked around there the same as at regular Federation and Board of Directors' meetings. Too smart for me. . . . The Center A and the Center B Basketball teams have entered the P. B. C. Basketball Tourney. We wish ’em luck. . . . Banjoeyes in deep concentration behind a PIPE these days. Center Youth NewsBy Irving Block

Here I am again in behalf of that great organization, Center Youth.

Most of you members ought to be ashamed of yourselves for the way that you have responded to the Fed

eration drive. Here we are ready r another drive and 95% of you

aven't paid your last year’s pledges. If you are in doubt about the amount that you have pledged, see “Temmy” Resnick.

The hours for our room for Sunday are 7:00 P. M. to 10:30, instead of 11:00, as stated in my last week's column.

How many of you boys have invited for the Center Youth semi- formal dance April 7? ? If you want a girl you had better invite fast, because there are a lot of boys coming down from Bowdoin and Lawrence. Esther Finks, chairman of the dance, has informed me that there will be a big surprise for everyone, but declined to make further comment on it. Music will be supplied by a local orchestra.

A note to the canteen hosts and hostesses: If you are scheduled to

Ja-ke care of the canteen and cannot .end on the designated afternoon

. evening, please get someone else to take your place, because if there are not two people to take care of the canteen it will be closed. The couples for next week are: Sunday afternoon, Abe Fineberg and Helen I. Bernstein; Sunday nite, Dave Spector and “Temmy” Resnick; Monday, Alvan Mersky and Mimi Weinman; Wednesday, Irving Zalc- man and Muriel Astor; Friday afternoon, Burton Minken and Lucille Slosberg; Saturday nite, Everett Perlman and Rowena LaReis.

Congratulations! Irving Zalcman for defending his office at Sergeant- at-arms with so much vigor and vitality against bitter opposition. (By the way, he kept his office by a close vote at the last executive board meeting.)

Here is a chance for all you masterminds to show what you really got. At the meeting next Wednesday, there will be an educational quiz program with questions concerning Jewry and Passover given Jiy Rabbi Greenbaum. So all you

ess (boys) and girls, be on time. Tryouts for the follies have al

ready started, so if you have missed the first tryout, don’t miss the second one. Keep in touch with the Bulletin Board in the Center Youth Lounge for dates.

I’ll be seein’ ya.

Pioneer Women To Nominate Officers At April Meeting

The Pioneer Women’s Organization held its regular monthly meeting at the Center Tuesday, March 6th, at 8:00 P. M. A short business meeting was held, at which Mrs. Meyer Levitan presided. Purim refreshments were served, with Mrs. Harry Geron, Hospitality Chairman, in charge. The group then attended the inspiring lecture of Dr. Leo J.

jJung. At a recent meeting of the Execu

tive Board at the home of Mrs. Robert Crasnick, Mrs. Abraham Serulnick was appointed chairman of a Nominating Committee to bring in a slate of officers for the 1945-46 season. Her committee includes Mrs. Esther Abrahamson, Mrs. Harry Broisman, Mrs. Myer Lerman, and Mrs. Bessie Edison.

Mrs. Joseph Lyons will be in charge of the April meeting.

“Help!” “Yi!” “I’m going under!” “Ha! Ha!” Oh—glub—ugh! “Brr-rr!”

Yes, that’s what went on for one hour at the splash party. It was really grand! After we “swum and drowned,” the boys and “pigtail crowd” went down to the Center to dance. We (girls) are named that because of one reason: THEM VICTORY BATHING CAPS! ! Our hair was so wet Carol Smith, Beverly Ross, Gloria Zalcman, Ina Golodetz and Yours Truly had to dress in our “tails.” And so ends our evening of water.

The arts and crafts club is running along smoothly. A few masks have already been completed. We are planning a new project of glass decorations such as: painted drinking glasses (flowers, figurines), vases, pitchers, ornaments.

Those who are willing to come every Tuesday nite at 7:00 to 8:30 and are interested in joining will please call or visit the Center to register for the class. Only those who are interested can belong.

At our business meeting, we sold our “Top Hat” at the price of 10c or more, all of which contributions have been donated to the Red Cross. The total amount was approximately $8.50, three and a half dollars more than our goal. Pretty Good! Thanks, kids, for your splendid cooperation and thanks to the staff of the “Top Hat” for their generous offer and hard work.

Mardi Gras Queen To Be Chosen Sunday

If you’ve seen a group of servicemen crowded around one spot in the Center Lounge, you know they’re contemplating which girl is going to be the Mardi Gras Queen. The five girls who are candidates have their pictures glamorously displayed in the Lounge. So, come one, come all—you don’t want to miss one of the big moments.

Entertainment is being provided by the Three Arts Studio and Julius “Yudy” Elowitch is the able Master of Ceremonies.

Mrs. Marshall Schlossberg is general chairman. Her committee consists of Annabelle Boxstein, Estelle Edison, Selma Cohen, Mrs. David Cutler. Mollie Weisman and Emma Broisman.

THE DEAN’S LISTL Deaa Sitverinaa

The Center B’s moved Into the quarterfinals of the Boys' Club Tournament by knocking oS the Hitch-Hikers, 20-12. It was the second time that the B's took the measure of the Hikers, but in spite of the fact that they were never threatened, the B’s had a harder time than the first. But only because the boys in Blue were off in their shooting.

The Center moved out in front from the start and led 9-2 at the quarter. At the half it was a fairly comfortable 14-4. The two teams matched point for point in the third period, which ended 20-10. That was the end of the B’s scoring for the evening, as they missed countless shots, but there was no harm done as the Hikers had also run out of gas and could pick up but two points. The winners now play the Cheverians Monday night.

The Center A’s joined the B’s in the quarterfinals with an easy 74- 12 win over the clawless Panthers. The outcome was never in doubt as the A’s had 16 points before the Panthers scored their first of a very limited number of baskets. At the quarter it was 20-2. Point production slowed a bit in the second peried while the subs got the feel of the floor, and it was a 32-7 half. In the third period the A’s picked

up again and let loose with 24 points to make a complete runaway of the alleged game, leading 56-12. The Panthers were held scoreless in the last quarter while the A’s rolled merrily on with 18 points to wind things up—mercifully—at 74- 12. Only sour note of the game was Kenny Waks’ Charley horse in the final minute of play.

It was a beautiful exhibition of teamplay as the boys passed, shot, set up plays, and continually stole the ball the times the losers managed to get their hands on it— which was to take it out after the A’s scored.

Monday night the A’s go up against Tourney favorite Y Eagles in a game that should go a long way in deciding the eventual winner. The boys have had some very good backing thus far, and should draw a real crowd this time.

There is a good possibility that the A’s and B’s will meet in the semi-finals Wednesday night — if they both take their games Monday.

Because the two teams are playing Monday night the Sports Supper scheduled by the Men’s Club is being postponed indefinitely. Watch for new date.

Ruth Greenberg & Rae Modes Attend Boston Conference

The New England Conference of Center Young Women’s Groups, held at the Bridgeport Jewish Community Center last year, was so successful that plans are now being made to hold another conference. At a meeting of representatives of the various Centers held last Sunday at the Hotel Kenmore, Boston, plans were made to hold the Conference at the New Haven Jewish Community Center on the week-end of April 14th and 15th. Owing to O. D. T. regulations, this Conference will have to be a delegate type meeting. Ruth Greenberg and Rae Modes were the Portland representatives at the meeting Sunday.

There will be more details later, but our Business Girls’ group should make plans now to take part in this Conference.

Rabbi David Berent Addresses Hebrew School Auxiliary

The monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Portland Hebrew School was held Monday, March 5, at the Jewish Community Center. Mrs. Benjamin Gordon presided and introduced the guest speaker.
