he venerable alloy of pewter is made of 92% tin, with copper and antimony to harden it and enhance casting. During most of the 20th century the tin used to make pewter was mined in Cornwall, where majestic granite
steam engine houses dominated the landscape. Today, sadly, Cornish tin mining is no more and the picturesque ruins of our industrial past add to the romance and mystery of Kernow.
At St Justin the distinguished tradition of casting pewter lives on. High quality pewter ingots are fused in a crucible and the molten metal is poured into the rubber moulds created from the artist’s original sculpture. After cooling and linishing, the items are hand-polished and assembled by skilled craftspeople. The result is gifts of great beauty and craftsmanship - objects of art to treasure forever.
Creating Sterling silver jewellery with a difference has also been an exciting development since the late nineties and a compact collection of Celtic and contemporary designs is featured towards the back of the catalogue.
Cornish bronze, made using recycled copper and Cornish tin, is our latest innovation and brings to prominence a bygone age, in which metallurgical developments changed people’s lives forever.
Each piece of St Justin jewellery and giftware is crafted by hand and eye in Cornwall, where the beautiful land was home to the many native Celts, who were driven away from the temperate midlands of Britain by invading European warriors in the early centuries. Our ethos and designs are heavily influenced by our past and all things natural related to the earth and its elements.

Our tin products not only represent an important part of our Cornish history,
they also contain Cornish tin that was recovered from the seabed after 180 years! Traditionally tin is given as a gift for a 10th wedding anniversary.

eltic art reverberates through the centuries, identified by the simple sophistication of form and an indefinable feeling for the rightness of things. Modern interpretations
of Celtic tradition have given us the arts and crafts movement and the era of art nouveau, where the ancient Celtic belief in elegance of form and a reverance for the earth and its creatures is apparent in the work of artists from many nations. Our range includes products inspired by the work of Archibald Knox and the manuscripts of Kells, Durrow and Lindisfarne.
The result, as given form by St Justin in the enduring alloy of pewter, is not only a re-creation of the past, but a continual evolution of living art, created by modern craftsmen for the people of today.

Flower of LifeThe Flower of Life can be found in all major religions in the world. The Temple of Osiris at Abydos, Egypt contains the oldest example found
and is thought to date from between 200 to 400 CE.
It is made up of 19 complete circles and 36 partial circular
arcs, enclosed by a large circle. Considered by some to be a
symbol of sacred geometry, it is said to contain ancient, religious value depicting the fundamental
forms of space and time.

Cabyll UshteyRising from its home in the dark pools of the Isle of Man,
Cabyll Ushtey would take the form of a beautiful white horse and tempt weary travellers to ride on its back-only to disappear with them into the depths
from which they would never return.
HaresHares are associated with the spring equinox and
symbolise balance, life, creativity, regeneration, fertility, and eternity. They were revered by the Celts and ancient peoples as magical
creatures gazing at the moon.

TrisceleThe triscele is commonly found in late Celtic art and is thought to have some Roman influence,
although fine examples are found in the native art of Ireland and Scotland.
The triscele is believed to represent the three realms of Celtic lore; the past, the present and the future.
As one of the most popular of ancient Celtic designs, it survived well into the Christian period, probably because
it could also be considered to represent the Holy Trinity.

TrefoilThe trefoil knot is an interlaced triquetra (three cornered) and is also known as a trinity knot. It was used in metalwork, illuminated manuscripts and commonly on crosses in the early Christian period. In Celtic design it is often interpreted as the three realms Land, Sea, Sky. In Christian designs it represents the Holy Trinity. Its modern interpretation is associated with love, honour and protection.

Runes The use of bind runes is ancient, probably
arising with the use of runes as an alphabet. Essentially, a bind rune is a symbol comprising
several runes overlaid, one upon another, to form a single symbol. This is believed to
concentrate the power of the individual runes into a more potent energy.
The casting runes below form a set of the twenty four Elder Futhark runes with an extra blank rune, sometimes referred to as Odin’s
Rune, the rune of fate or destiny.

Celtic CrossThe origin of the Celtic cross is not clearly defined.
At some time during the 5th century CE carvings appeared on stones and crosses bearing a ring around the vertical

The quaich is a shallow drinking cup originating from Scotland. The word quaich is attributed to the Gaelic word ‘cuach’, which is derived from the Latin word ‘caucus’, meaning drinking cup. The quaich hails from medieval times when people were very distrustful of strangers and carried their own cup for fear of either
poisoning or watering down of their whisky.

he Bronze Age in Great Britain and Western Europe began over 4,000 years ago in around 2,000 BCE. Both copper and tin were discovered, mined and fused together
to form the alloy bronze, renowned for its strength and longevity.
A new bronze age is emerging from the depths of history. This is not just a re-kindling of an ancient alloy with the colour of gold. It is a revival of a bygone culture with a metal that changed lives and brought a sophistication in jewellery that had not existed before.
We have re-created this ancient metal using recycled copper and Cornish tin to produce these new designs. The methods are difficult and painstaking but the final results are worth the effort. We hope you will enjoy these and our future creations.

Celtic KnotworkThe Celts used knotwork to decorate many
of their artefacts. To them, the intricate patterns symbolised the continuity of life.
Runes The use of bind runes is ancient, probably arising with the use of runes as an alphabet. Essentially, a bind rune is a symbol
comprising several runes overlaid, one upon
another, to form a single symbol. This is believed
to concentrate the power of the individual
runes into a more potent energy.
The casting runes below form a set of the twenty
four Elder Futhark runes with an extra blank rune, sometimes referred to as Odin’s Rune, the rune of
fate or destiny.

ur Celtic sterling silver collection is cast in-house using the fine methods we have developed over the years.
Each piece is mastered by our skilled pattern making team and then moulded ready for wax injection. The wax trees are made up, invested in a cylindrical pot and then cast at over 1,000 degrees Celsius.
Through a laborious process of fettling, linishing and polishing the fine castings are brought up to a lustrous finish ready for assembly and packing. All items are complete, with chain or thong where needed, and are packed in high quality jewellery boxes.
Great care is taken to ensure you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

ornwall is justly proud of its ancient tin industry that began nearly 4,000 years ago during the Bronze Age. Nowhere in the world was tin mining so engrained into the local culture as
Cornwall – especially during the 19th and 20th Centuries. Sadly the last tin mines in Cornwall have now closed, but the landscape is strewn with the remains of chimney stacks and engine houses that leave us with a poignant reminder of this once thriving industry.
Tin was not only mined in Cornwall, it was smelted and cast into ingots locally too. Much of this tin was transported by sea from Cornwall all over the world and occasionally some of the ships were lost. One such ship was the SS Liverpool that sank off Anglesey in 1863. It lay on the seabed for 138 years until its remains were found along with a cargo of tin ingots. It turned out that the ingots discovered had been originally smelted at Chyandour, Penzance in 1862!
After being raised up from the seabed and carefully cleaned – we now use the tin from these ingots when creating our Cornish Tin products, thus preserving the integrity of this piece of Cornish History.
10th Wedding AnniversaryTin is known worldwide as the traditional gift to give for 10 years of wedlock. Many of the items in our Cornish Tin range are ideal as gifts for this special occasion.
