We continue with the beginnings of Jesus’ public life. In it, we are reminded of this astonishing scene: Jesus reads from Isaiah and proclaims that the scriptures are fulfilled in their hearing. And this is done today. It is part of our own failing that we miss the great things in the world, thinking that they happen only far away and a long time ago – or are only fulfilled in the future. One of the tremendous aspects of the Gospel is that we are given a share in the Divine Life now; we are not waiting for life, rather, we have it now. In fullness we will receive this in union with God; as Augustine says, “Our hearts are restless until we rest in thee.” But we experience this now, in its beginnings. It is easy to forget that earth is crammed full of heaven. We can’t see it easily anymore. Modern people are too narrow in their view and their own narrative to see the greater picture. We lack wisdom on our own – we desperately need power, and that power comes to us in the Holy Spirit – the bond of love. When you think of the world, find its good. Work hard to find that story or image that unites us – that idea is found in the belief we share in Christ and in being members of his body. Be strong, and most importantly smile often and be filled with joy. In a world that declares our differences, the shining light of God’s power in his grace freely offered us gathers us by one thing: only Christ. There is nothing else than him and the love he calls us to.
Your servant in Our Blessed Lord,
Fr. Michael
Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others.

Today’s Responsorial Psalm
Please note: During the flu season, please use your discretion when offering or accepting handshakes. It is perfectly ac-ceptable to offer another sign of peace rather than shaking hands, such as a bow of the head or simply saying “Peace be with you” without any gesture. Please also know that during Communion, it is acceptable to refrain from taking the cup and to take only the host. Communion is still complete if taken in one form. Finally, if you are feeling ill, please understand that you are not obligated to come to Mass.

Saint Brigid (Bridget) of Kildare, Ireland Patron Saint of St. Bridget’s Church—Feast Day February 1
A woman of great faith, St. Brigid is revered for her gentleness, piety, and charity to the poor. She was once called to the bedside of a dying pagan chief to speak to him about God and Christ's love for mankind. To illustrate her point, she picked some of the reeds covering the dirt floor and wove them into a cross, which she then used to help him un-derstand how Christ died. St. Brigid was one of many holy men and women who continued St. Patrick's tireless work of converting the Celtic pagans after his death. Brigid was raised in the mid-5th century in Faughart, Ireland. Her fa-ther was a pagan chief and her mother a slave. At one point, her father wished her to marry the King of Ulster, but she refused and eventually won his permission to become a nun. In time, the king of Lienster recog-nized Brigid had a beautiful soul and gifted her a large plain in Kildare, Ireland. Brigid built many convents in Ireland, but Kildare was the most famous for housing both monks and nuns.
Interesting Facts: •She is patron saint of Ireland, newborn babies, midwives, Irish nuns, dairymaids and cattle. •As a child, St. Brigid herded sheep, pigs, and cattle and grew to love animals. •As abbess, St. Brigid ranked above the abbot who governed the monks; that’s why she’s often shown carrying a bishop's hooked staff (as in our statue). Some early accounts state that Brigid was consecrated a bishop by St. Mel.
We will be honoring St. Bridget’s Feast Day with a special activi-ty during our Whole Community Faith Formation program at St. Bridget’s Church on February 3rd.
Note: We have another patronal feast day coming up very soon! St. Scholastica’s Feast Day is February 10. We will be honoring St. Scholastica, twin sister of our Parish patronal saint, St. Benedict, during our Whole Community Faith Formation program at St. Mary’s Church on February 10th.
Sharing the Gospel The prophet Isaiah wrote about Je-sus a long time before he was even born. When Jesus read Isaiah's words, they described Jesus perfect-ly. Jesus did come to free people from sin, to help those in pain, and even to help blind people see.
Prayer Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to help us.

Catholics Speak Out for Justice: Equal Rights for Farmworkers Protecting workplace dignity is essential to protecting hu-man dignity in general. As Catholics, we believe that work-ers have fundamental rights, including the right to organize themselves to petition for improved working conditions. This has been part of Church teaching for over 125 years. In New York State, farmworkers are excluded from this and other basic rights granted to other workers. They can be fired if they collectively bring a grievance to their supervi-sor. During our upcoming Public Policy Weekend, please plan to sign the Diocese-wide petition to our state elected officials, urging them to support equal labor rights for farm-workers.
Building a School One Bottle at a Time Your redeemable bottles and cans mean money to help us build St Benedict’s School in Kenya. Through your generosi-ty, three classrooms have already been built. Please save your redeemable bottles and cans and drop them off any time at St Bridget’s in front of the white Carriage barn near the Parish Hall. Your extra effort can make a difference!
Your Chance to Win $$ and Help St. Mary’s School The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a Super Bowl LIII Board with all net proceeds to benefit St. Mary’s School. Stop in the St. Mary’s School office during the week to purchase and select your square or visit us during the Coffee Hour held in the school gym after the Catholic Schools Mass on Sunday, January 27. Each square is $25 and available for purchase until end of school day on Febru-ary 1. Cash or check payable to The Knights of Columbus. Payouts will be $250 for each of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd quarter winners and $500 for the final score with the assumption that all 100 squares will be sold. All winners will be contact-ed on February 4. Any questions can be directed to Sara Bodine at (585) 953-1452 [email protected].
Nocturnal Adoration Society Wait for God, for I shall again praise him, my savior and my God (Psalms 42:6). Please be with us to deepen your joy of a loving, personal relationship with Jesus. Our prayer is a special adaptation of The Liturgy of the Hours, and includes exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, psalms, spiritual read-ings, prayers, and silent adoration. Everyone is welcome, on Friday, February 1, 7pm to 8pm, in St. Mary’s Church adoration chapel. We meet on the first Friday each month.
Parish Procedure for Inclement Weather
During Weekdays: If Bloomfield Schools are delayed or closed due to inclement weather, there will be no services including Masses and Confession at St. Bridget’s Church. If St. Mary’s School is closed due to inclement weather, there will be no services including Masses, Confessions, Adora-tion, or meetings. In addition, the Parish office will be closed. If St. Mary’s School is on a delayed opening, there will be no 6:45am Mass or services.
On Saturdays: If the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has issued a travel ban or if a state of emergency has been de-clared, the Saturday 8am Mass will be canceled.
On Sundays: The parish defers to the Diocese for deci-sions made about Sunday Masses. Please watch for updates on our website, our Facebook page, on news broadcasts, and/or in your email for changes to Mass schedules or for other events and activities.
Note: If you did not receive the email update that went out this past weekend regarding the schedule changes, please first check your “junk” email folder to ensure that it was not delivered there. If you do not have an email from St. Benedict Parish in your junk folder, and would like to be added to the list, please email our Director of Communica-tions at [email protected].
Attendance and Collections from Last Weekend As you can see from the numbers above, the weather sig-nificantly reduced our attendance and collections last week-end and we are currently experiencing a substantial and unexpected deficit as a result. If you were unable to make it to Mass last weekend and would still like to make your weekly contribution, please place it in the basket with this weekend’s collection. We appreciate your support in helping us recover from this unanticipated deficit.

Please Pray for Our Sick and Their Caregivers
The U.S. bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reinforces to-day’s reading from 1 Corinthians: “Because its individual members do collectively make up the Body of Christ, that body’s health and well-being are the responsibility of the members — the personal responsibility of each one of us. We are all stewards of the Church.”
Have you found yourself in any of these situations? Do you need someone to talk things through with? Do you want to find God in this time of change, pain and loss? Do you need to regain some sense of hope after…
...the phone call you hoped you’d never get.
...the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you. ...the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life. ...the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.” ...the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.”
You are not alone. Members of our faith community have gone through extensive training in developing their listen-ing skills to help people facing these situations. Contact Deacon Claude to talk about the pos-sibility of beginning a conversation with a Stephen Minister to walk along side you in this difficult time.
Family Promise Update During the week of Janu-ary 13-19, caring volunteers from our parish and com-munity helped transform St. Bridget’s Hall into a warm and welcoming home for a homeless family of six. Volunteers could be seen dropping off a hot meal, chatting and eating dinner with the family, playing UNO with the children, and enjoy-ing a Disney movie night with popcorn and all! This is wit-ness to a compassionate community bringing joy to a family in crisis. St. Benedict Parish is one of 13 host congregations in On-tario County who have partnered with Family Promise of Ontario County to provide evening meals, lodging and hos-pitality to homeless children and their families for a week at a time, four times a year. Families spend their evenings in the facilities of host congregations and days at a Day Center where they receive help finding jobs and securing affordable housing. If you would like to know how you can make a difference in a family’s life, please contact Jeanne Guastaferro, Family Promise Coordinator, at [email protected] or (585) 953-7715.
