Jesus & The 10 Commandments – Mt.5:17-20; Gal.3:21-25; Rom.8:1-4
We have seen that the commandments:-
a. Warn of danger – “You shall not …”
b. Expose human sin
1. Jesus endorses the commandments –Mt.5:17
a. They display God’s character
b. They show us the best way to live
2. Jesus fulfils the commands
a. Perfectly obeying them
b. Fully explaining them – Mt.5:17-48
- they have lasting relevance –v.18
- they are the standard for evaluating obedience – v.19
- they deal with “inside-out” righteousness –v.19 cf. Ps.51:10,16,17
c. Comprehensively dealing with our sin
1. The law shows us our sin – Gal.3:21-25
- like a jailer – v.22,23
- like a strict disciplinarian – v.24
2. Jesus deals with our sin – Is.53:4-6; Rom.8:1-3; 1Pet.2:24
THE GREAT EXCHANGE
On the Cross - Jesus exchanged:-
- his obedience for our rebellion
- his intimacy for our condemnation
- his life for our death
Through faith in Christ – we exchange:-
- our sin for his righteousness
- our condemnation for his intimacy
- our death for his resurrection life
d. Empowering the weak sinner
By his death Jesus dealt with our sinThrough his resurrection Jesus empowers us
with new life – a life empowered to keep the commands of God
God’s promise – Jer.31:33; Ez.36:25-27The Holy Spirit makes it possible – Rom.8:4;

3. Jesus is our hope
a. His life
- he obeyed perfectly
- his righteousness credited to us
b. His teaching
- showing us our need
- arousing hope in our despair
Jesus is our hope
c. His death
- dying in our place
- giving to us forgiveness & righteousness
d. His resurrection
- empowering us to obey
- guaranteeing the new creation
