ST. STEPHEN CHURCH NILES, OHIO

April 19, 2020DURING THIS TIME OF SOCIAL DISTANCING, WE WILL PROVIDE AN ABBREVIATED BULLETIN WITH THE SUNDAY READINGS AND OTHER PARISH NEWS TO KEEP YOU UPDATED. THE OFFICE IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO THE GOVERNOR’S ORDER. We will check the mail and monitor the phone and email during this time. Please leave us a message and we will return your call as soon as possible.

A Prayer of SOLIDARITY: Covid-19For all who have contracted coronavirus, we pray for care

and healing. For those who are particularly vulnerable, we pray for safety

and protection. For all who experience fear or anxiety, we pray for peace of

mind and spirit. For affected families who are facing difficult decisions

between food on the table or public safety, we pray for policies that recognize their plight.

For those who do not have adequate health insurance, we pray that no family will face financial burdens alone.

For those who are afraid to access care due to immigration status, we pray for recognition of the God-given dignity of all.

For our brothers and sisters around the world, we pray for shared solidarity.

For public officials and decision makers, we pray for wisdom and guidance.

Father, during this time may your Church be a sign of hope, comfort and love to all.

Grant peace. Grant comfort. Grant healing. Be with us, Lord. Amen.

ETERNAL FLAME INTENTION – WEEK OF APRIL 19THIN MEMORY OF GARY MILES by Mary Ann Hudzik

SANCTUARY LAMP INTENTIONIN THANKSGIVING by Patricia McMahon

THEME: WE ARE RECONCILED TO GOD, IN HIS DIVINE MERCY, THROUGH HIS SON – The Church continues to celebrate and give thanks for the mystery of the Resurrection. God has anointed his only Son as our Savior and Redeemer. So with hearts full of hope, joy, and faith, let us be reconciled to God in his Divine Mercy and share that mercy with the world.

LITURGY OF THE WORD – Saint Luke describes the early Christian community, as they devoted themselves to prayer, the communal life…[and]… the breaking of bread. Peter’s Letter stresses the living hope that believers now have through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. In John’s Gospel, the resurrected Jesus appears to his disciples, saying, Peace be with you and showing them his wounds. He breathes on them, and says, receive the Holy Spirit and grants them the authority to forgive sins. Later, he convinces Thomas of the truth of the Resurrection.

EASTER TIME– Second Sunday of Easter – Divine Mercy Sunday (JN 20:19-31)

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE BY BUD OZAR – “Whose sins you forgive, are forgiven” means the grudges we carry only make us miserable. The Kingdom of God begins in your home where children learn the paths to peace promised in today’s gospel through merciful and forgiving demonstrations by their parents.

STEWARDSHIP 2nd Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday)

“Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” JOHN 20:19Are you good at making people feel welcome? When you meet someone new, like a new neighbor, a new work colleague or a new parishioner, do you make them feel at home? Many of us can probably do a much better job at this. When we make people feel welcome, we make them feel like they are included instead of being excluded. We are made for relationships – with God and each other. A simple “hello” and a smile goes a long way.

CCD – Our heartfelt gratitude goes to our CCD teachers, Connie Brandt, Mary Sylvester, Carol Sylvester, Kara Stanford, Katie Ward, Regina Helmick, Valerie Sullivan, Connie Hake and Mary Ann McMahon, who is also our program director as well as a teacher. Thank you for sharing your time and your faith with the young people of our parish. You are great examples of faith in action to all of us.

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNIONMy Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You have already come, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
