“Jesus, My Lord”

“And Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” John 20:28

It is important that every Christian:

1. Thinks of Jesus as “My Lord.”

2. Appreciates what it means to have Jesus as “My Lord.”

Definitions – “Lord”

Kurios - meaning “power”. Variously translated “master”, “owner”. Describes one having “power” or “authority” (cf. Matthew 28:18)

Matthew 28:18

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”

Definitions – “Lord”

Despotes – “a ruler with absolute power or authority”

Used of God (Luke 2:29)

Used of Christ (2 Peter 2:1)

2 Peter 2:1

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.

“Jesus, My Lord”

• Jesus is to be my Lord– As He Himself taught (John 13:13)

You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.

– As Peter proclaimed (Acts 2:36; 10:36)

– By virtue of His Death (Romans 14:9)

Romans 14:9

For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

• This Rules out any Other “Lords”– My own Will (Galatians 2:20)

• This Rules out any Other “Lords”– My own Will (Galatians 2:20)

– My Flesh (Colossians 3:4-5)

But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

You might acknowledge Him as “the” Lord

You might join others in praising Him as “our” Lord

Have you submitted to Him such that you can rightly say, “Jesus, MY Lord”?
