This year God graciously allowed you—and us—to be part of

His kingdom work. “… We’re not content with just a complete libraryof the film in all the world's languages,” explained Erick Schenkel,

executive director of The JESUS Film Project®. “But we own thetask all the way down until a person has a life-changing encounterwith Jesus—that moment when their life is transformed because theysee and they understand and they receive Him. And so we’re doingwhat we need to do to saturate the world with the knowledge of JesusChrist, with the JESUS film and our other films.” God is using the

ministry of the JESUS Film™ to help transform the lives of millions

of individuals—as well as families and communities—worldwide.

The Lord has led the ministry in formulating its current three-

pronged focus: reaching the unreached people groups; global

church planting; evangelism and discipleship among urban and

media-sophisticated people. The following stories reveal how He

has worked in each of these areas this past year.

Thank you for your faithful and generouspartnership. The prophet Isaiah said: “…‘Thank the Lord! Praise His name! Tell thenations what He has done. Let them know howmighty He is! Sing to the Lord, for He has donewonderful things. Make known His praisearound the world’ ” (Isaiah 12:4-5, NLT). Wepray this report encourages you as you readof God’s transforming work.

Tears of joy fill the eyes of thosewho prayed for years for the Rebeladoswhen they think of how the Lord hasworked through JESUS. In themountains on the island of Santiago, inthe West African archipelago republicof Cape Verde, sit a number of isolatedvillages where approximately 3,000people have lived in self-imposedisolation. These villages, founded byescaped slaves during colonial times, developed and grew as more andmore former slaves joined them overthe years. Due to their remotelocation, the colonial powers at thattime left these villages to function on

their own. Following Cape Verde’sindependence in 1975, thesecommunities refused to be part of thenew country and continued in theirsocial isolation.

They call themselves Rebelados—Rebels. They raise their own food andlive in houses made from cornstalks, rejecting the use of modernmachinery. They refuse to take part inthe national census, to vote inelections, or to participate in nationalhealth care. They do not allow theirchildren to attend school. CapeVerdian pastors tried to visit theRebelados over the years, but each

time they were pelted with rocks untilthey retreated. Because of thishostility, the Cape Verdian churchescould not evangelize these villages.

The Rebelados worship an oldSpanish Bible which a priest gave toone of the escaped slaves. Unable toread, they do not understand themessage of this book. Many CapeVerdian pastors prayed that one daythese people might understand themessage of the book they worship.

During a recent Easter season, ministry workers showed JESUS for thefirst time in Sotaventu Kabuverdianu, the heart language of all the people on

Santiago. When Robert1, a retiredNazarene pastor, received a copy ofJESUS, he decided to show this versionof the film as his full-time ministry.Converting an old van into a film-showing unit, he traveled to remoterural areas and to the mountainswhere he set up camp. He reportedthat people walked for miles to see the film, and many came to know theLord personally.

Following a showing in a remotevillage, a man approached PastorRobert saying he walked nearly 10miles to see the film. This man askedhim to show the film in his village.

When Pastor Robert went with theman to his village, he discovered theman was the chief of the Rebeladocommunities and a descendant of theslave who received the Spanish Bible. The chief heard that JESUS told thestory of the book they worshipped, and he wanted his people to see andhear the message in their language.Pastor Robert stayed with theRebelados for three days and showedJESUS each evening. In addition, healso preached sermons related to thefilm in the evenings and visited peopleduring the days.

Translated Scriptureportions were introduced, so theRebelados could begin learning toread—in their own language—themessage of the Spanish book theyworshipped throughout their history

“... At the JESUS Film, we’re really involved in three major parts of God’s mission to the world,” ErickSchenkel said. “The first is reaching unreached and unengaged people groups all around the world; thesecond is planting churches all over the world; … [and the third is] the use of film with urban, media-sophisticated people. … We’re so excited about that.” Through the Holy Spirit’s enabling power, theJESUS Film™ seeks to be involved in transforming people through the strength of visual story.

Mission 865™ is one of the priority initiatives the Lord usesat the JESUS Film to bring the gospel to the unreached. Thisinitiative is the commitment of the ministry to produce theJESUS film in all languages spoken by 50,000 or more peoplewho do not yet have the film available in their heart language. This encompasses approximately 323 million people. Effortsare underway to reach this goal by 2025. A Finishers Fund—established by a group of ministry partners—encouragesothers to join the Mission 865 initiative. This challenge grantfund will allow every dollar given to Mission 865 to bematched. Mission 865 launched in 2010, and as of October15, 2013, workers completed JESUS in 71 of the Mission 865languages from 27 countries. You can find more informationabout Mission 865 at www.mission865.org or see a shortvideo at jfministrypartners.org/2013videos.html.

Central African Republic (CAR)proved to be a hot spot this past yearfor the Lord’s life-transforming work. The ministry in CAR premiered fournew versions of JESUS in Mission 865languages. In one location 500 DVDsof JESUS in the Bhogoto language weredistributed in one day. The CampusCrusade for Christ® national teamleader in CAR told the story of aBhogoto woman who received a DVDand watched the film in a family’shome: “Yes, a woman who [had] neverprayed in her language went. She sawJesus speak in her language, and at theend, she prayed in her language. … Shesaid that she didn’t realize that herlanguage is … good in the [eyes] of God.”

Another premiere—of the KabaJESUS film—took place in a remotearea of CAR. Sixty people arrived tosee the film. Approximately 30indicated decisions for Christ. Aministry leader noted: “During this filmshow, an old woman shouted, ‘Oh, soJesus is a Kaba!’ … She was very excitedto see Jesus speaking her ownlanguage.” Now a group of Biblestudies meets in that area.

Heart Language Excitement

“After watching this movie, manypeople from my community came [to]faith. This movie was a great gift for us,”shared Prakash, an Indian pastor, afterwatching a new version of the JESUSfilm. Most speakers of Prakash’s heartlanguage can neither read nor write. This barrier made the traditionalmethod of script translation nearlyimpossible. However, using a relativelynew method called Video AudioStrategy of Translation (VAST),recording technicians used an audioscript—rather than a written one—toproduce the film in Prakash’slanguage.

Following several early showings ofthe film, the feedback from believerswas overwhelmingly positive. Onepastor shared that members of hiscommunity expressed amazementthat the film was in their heartlanguage. Immediately, they wanted toknow more about Christ. Anotherbeliever noted that many of the peoplein his community held their own ideasof who Jesus was, but this film finallyshowed them the truth. Also, theexcitement of some people watchingthe film, now able to understand thegospel on a deeper level, propelledthem into their communities with arenewed desire to share their faithbecause they finally found a tool theyfelt confident using.

7

The first-ever believers’ conferencefor a confidential Indian languagecommunity convened this past year. At this evangelism conference 750Christian speakers of this languagewatched JESUS—newly produced intheir heart language.

The next day they planned toreturn to their homes, equipped toplant hundreds of churches. A letterfrom a partner ministry leaderdescribed the scene as conferenceattendees watched the film: “As thecrowd sees the miracles of Jesus, theyclap spontaneously. As they hear Jesusteaching in [their language], I hearexcitement and agreement across thecrowd. Soon we will wind up, and allthese present will be asked to go furtherwith this tool: share with more folks, establish prayer groups, and let thiswhole region know that JESUS IS LORD.”The leader went on to explain that inthe month following the conference, his ministry planned to show the newfilm to approximately 10,000 people.

Planting Churches“Visual story is a church-planting tool,” explains Erick Schenkel. “We know that part of the

power of the film is that it is based on Scripture itself …. And part of its power is that it’s a visualstory, and so people who can’t read are able to see the message and be transformed by it.” TheJESUS Film™ equips the body of Christ with resources to plant and strengthen churches.

The challenge Christ’s church faces today is connecting nonbelievers to Him in the power ofthe Holy Spirit. Global Church Movements (GCM)—one of Campus Crusade’s worldwideinitiatives—holds as its conviction: “We, as followers of Jesus Christ, have the biblical mandate andspiritual responsibility to establish churches where there are none.” With a faith goal of planting 5million churches by the year 2020, GCM plans to plant 1 million directly through Campus Crusadeand another 4 million in partnership with others—using JESUS Film tools as an integral part. To learn more about GCM, please visit www.globalchurchmovements.org.

Refugees streamed across theborder into South Sudan—a nationformed to ease years-old civil war andethnic cleansing. They came from aneighboring country where thegovernment relentlessly bombedanyone it regarded as the opposition. At the border a ministry partneringwith the JESUS Film was operating amassive refugee camp serving morethan 70,000 people. At this camprefugees found safety, food andmedicine. This humanitarian reliefdone in Jesus’ name created curiosityabout Christ.

The refugees attended frequentpresentations of the JESUS film in theirheart language in the camp. At most ofthe JESUS film showings, more than 90percent of attendees indicateddecisions for Christ. To date, dozens ofchurches have been planted and morethan 20,000 people previously fleeingdeath have found new life in Christ. “What do we do?” The woman onthe other end of the phone line asked.Confused, the North African CampusCrusade staff member responded,“What do you mean, ‘What do we do?’ ”The woman went on: “Well, wewatched this film; it’s called Magdalena. There are eight of us ladies thatwatched it together. We’ve come toknow the Lord. We prayed this prayer atthe end. Now what do we do? You’ve gotyour number on the DVD.” The staffmember started to arrange a time togo and meet them, but the womeninsisted, “We’ll come and meet you.”

Since it was culturally inappropriatefor them to meet with strangers ontheir own, the women traveled fromtheir mountain village along with theirhusbands and children. Time after timethe women met with staff membersfor discipleship and ministry training—never without their husbands. Duringthe discipleship time, the husbands satoff to the side, watching over thechildren and listening. Nine monthslater, one or two of the husbands hadchosen to follow Christ, and the eightwomen had shared their faith withothers living near them. This smallgroup of women and men now existsas a fledgling church.

A country of spiritual and physicalpoverty, Haiti has a profound need ofGod’s transforming touch. Dramaticexamples of changed lives wereevident in the past year as a result ofHis work through the partnership ofthe JESUS Film and the local church.Approximately 10,000 families live inthe tent city of Ona-ville, built after amajor earthquake hit Haiti in 2010. AJESUS Film team member now servesas the pastor of a large tent churchthere. After one JESUS showing, 42couples—unmarried, but livingtogether—indicated decisions forChrist and joined the Ona-ville church. The ministry team followed up withthem. An observer explained that theSpirit led them to understand theirneed “… to be married and make apublic declaration of their new birth. Thus, a mass wedding was planned atthe same time for all 42 couples. … Itwas spectacular!”

At another JESUS film showingaffiliated with the Ona-ville church,God transformed Variola’s heart. Avoodoo priestess, the change inVariola was immediately noticeableafter she gave her life to Christ. Rightaway she invited the film team to herhome to meet her husband, whoplanned to become a witch doctor. The team accepted her invitation. At Variola’s house they shared the gospel with her husband andexperienced the joy of seeing himsurrender his life to Christ as well! Aministry report declared: “Afterwardthe leaders destroyed all voodoofetishes, like rings dedicated to demons, and other items. Deepak approached Ravi, havingheard of his influence in thecommunity. Deepak knew that if Godgranted him favor with this man, adoor might crack open to beginchurch-planting work in this SouthAsian village. “I have a … movie I wouldlike to show,” Deepak began. The HolySpirit softened Ravi’s heart, and hewelcomed Deepak into the community.

With Ravi’s permission Deepakorganized a JESUS film showing where60 people watched the story of Jesusunfold in their heart language.Afterward the crowd, full of questionsabout Jesus, wondered if the storythey watched was true. Ravi said toDeepak, “We want to know more aboutJesus Christ.” Over the next severalweeks, Deepak regularly met with Ravito teach him and answer his questions.Within two months Ravi announcedhis personal conclusion that everyonein the community ought to receiveChrist. The Spirit led a total of sevenfamilies in that community to followJesus and be baptized. This event in2012 marked the beginning of avibrant house church in that village.

The spread of the gospel did notstop there. In 2013 a ministry leaderreported that God has continued touse Ravi and has given him a heart forspiritual multiplication. “Who are you? Why are you here? What are you doing?” demanded theangry religious leaders. The group ofcollege students answered, “We arehere to tell you the good news!” Theleaders scoffed, “What’s the goodnews?” The students respondedconfidently, “The good news is Jesus—His power to heal and save.”

This confrontation happened in aregion of Africa known to breedradicalism and violence. Completelydevoted to their religion, the peoplethere are hostile to Jesus and Hisfollowers. Christian leaders say it hasbeen 1,000 years since these peopleheard the gospel. A national Christianleader with a heart to reach themmobilized and prepared this group ofcollege students. They willinglyvolunteered to risk their lives bringingthe gospel to the people in this region. They went with JESUS DVDs and aburden to see Christ’s name lifted upin this hostile area.

The antagonistic religious leaderschallenged them to heal a demon-possessed man in their village. Thestudents took a bold step of faith andasked to see the man. They prayedover him through the night whilereading Scripture, worshipping theLord, and commanding the demons tocome out of him. By morning God haddelivered him.

The man proclaimed to everyone in the town that Jesus healed him.Enraged by this turn of events, thereligious leaders beat the students anddrove them out of town. Undaunted, the students returned, this time goingdirectly to the town market wherethey distributed hundreds of JESUSDVDs. Once again the religious leadersordered them beaten and then arrested.

They spent that night in jail wherethey encountered six suspectedmembers of an international terroristgroup. The Holy Spirit continuedworking through the boldness of thesestudents. By night’s end all sixsuspected terrorists—along with a

police officer who heard theirtestimony during the night—weretransformed by the power of thegospel and received Christ as theirSavior. An underground church wasborn—where there had not been asingle known Christian for 1,000years—made up of a police officerwho had beaten these collegestudents, a man delivered fromdemons, six former terrorists, andtheir families.

Three years passed. The ministrydirector recently visited thisunderground church. He reported itwas flourishing, having grown to 40members. They actively give outcopies of JESUS generously providedby ministry partners. They asked himfor more DVDs and even talked aboutplanting another church! The ministrydirector recounted: “The DVDs ofJESUS are so powerful, and in thepeople’s language, all we have to do isplace a DVD in a home, and the Word ofGod will do its work. We have a vision toplace a DVD of JESUS in every homewith a player on the African continent.God is doing some amazing things.”

In partnership with the localgovernment of an Asian nation, a teamof believers started cooking classes forwomen. Workers incorporatedMagdalena showings into theseclasses. Through this ministry projectMona’s life changed forever. Monawas one of the teachers recruited tohelp teach these cooking classes.

A widow, she raised her three childrenon her own. Two of the childrensuffered from physical disabilities, butMona lacked the money to buy themwheelchairs—forcing her to put themin a grocery cart any time she neededto go out with them. Typically, inaddition to showing Magdalena, ministry workers display the love ofChrist by helping meet physical needsof the poor in tangible ways—such asproviding wheelchairs.

After one of the Magdalenashowings, a few of the believers visitedMona’s home. Moved by the fact thatsomeone cared for her enough to visit,Mona broke down in tears. She sharedthat before meeting them, she hadplanned to leave her children at anorphanage and commit suicide. However, through these believers theHoly Spirit brought Mona to faith inChrist, giving her hope and a newoutlook on life.

“Why are these people so joyful?”Laila asked herself. She could notunderstand what made them sing anddance, seemingly without a care in theworld, despite her Asian country’sopposition to their faith. She sensedsomething different about them—something Laila wanted. They claimed

to be Christians, which caused Lailaimmediately to become suspiciousand guarded. The divorced, 36-year-old single mother did not trust otherseasily—especially Christians.

However, Laila’s curiosity drew herto these people—exhibiting suchgracious concern for everyone theyencountered—and she could not helpbut stay and watch the film theyshowed, Magdalena. The Holy Spiritused the film to change Laila’s heart.By the end of the film, tears werestreaming down her cheeks. Neverbefore had she seen such love in aperson. Now she understood whythese people exhibited such joy.Surrendering her life to Christ, Lailaprayed with one of them, thankingJesus for finding her and giving her anew family.

The Lord has used Rivka even inthe most dangerous places. In onesuch Middle Eastern country, aministry worker shared that six womenwere going through the film series andthe accompanying Bible study withher. She explained how she found thisvisual medium especially helpful, sincenot all women in this country areliterate. However, security risks forcedthree of the women to stop meetingwith her. The worker discreetly gavethe materials to another local womanshe trusted. She explained, “So when[the three women and the woman withRivka materials] visit each other, theycan watch it as long as no one else isaround them to disturb them.”

Suddenly a man burst into thesanctuary of the small Middle-Easternchurch. His raised voice drew theattention of the 52 refugee womenwatching a Rivka episode. The mandirected his anger at the ministryleaders, as well as at a particularrefugee woman in the audience.Calmly, a ministry worker tried tounderstand the man’s anger anddiscovered the woman was his wife.

The man did not want her seeingthis film series. He explained that hisdaughter had already decided to followJesus, and he did not want his wife todo the same. As he spoke, the man’sanger subsided somewhat, and heagreed to allow his wife to continuewatching Rivka in peace. Severalbelievers took him aside and explainedthe contents of the film to him.

By the end of the Rivka episode, the work of the Holy Spirit wasundeniable. In the pews the refugeewomen eagerly engaged withbelievers in a time of questions anddiscussion. Off to the side with severalbelievers, sat the man who hadentered the room livid with anger. Now he sat quietly, with a Bible inhand, intensely studying the words ofScripture the believers showed him.

In rural Romania the CampusCrusade ministry used “tent meetings”to share the gospel using JESUS andMagdalena. They also organizedevangelistic messages, testimonies andactivities for the children. They evenheld children-focused tent meetings ineach village, showing them The Storyof Jesus for Children. This approach wasso successful that later they purchasedfive more tents to expand the reach ofthe ministry. In addition to showingthe films in 64 villages, they alsotaught the people in each of thesevillages how to share the gospel.

To reach children with the gospel is to reachthe next generation of the church. For thisreason The Story of Jesus for Children serves as aunique ministry tool. Cultural Resources forOngoing Evangelism

When the Holy Spirit transforms a person’s heart and that person receives Christ,he or she “… has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2Corinthians 5:17, NLT). To help new Christ followers understand what it looks like tobegin living in the reality of this new life, the JESUS Film™ creates context-specificresources. Two film series designed for ongoing discipleship address issues of theChristian life—Walking With Jesus in the African context, and Following JESUS in theSouth Asian context. God uses these films to root new believers and newly plantedchurches in the gospel.

I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings” (1 Corinthians9:22-23, NLT). Likewise, our commitment includes doing whatever it takes to help reach those livingin urban, media-sophisticated settings. A JESUS Film representative at anAmerican church met a missionaryserving in a closed Asian country. Themissionary sought out therepresentative because he wasconvinced the film held the key toreaching certain dangerous triballeaders and their followers in aparticular area of that country. Hehoped to convince the JESUS Film™ totranslate the film into the language ofthese tribal people. On the spot therepresentative found the language onthe Jesus Film Media mobile app andsaw that the version already wascomplete. The worker went on to say:“As we shared the app with thegentleman, he became so excited andtold us that he has three men on theground who are fearless and will beready to go into the mountains in thisAsian country where this is thepredominate language as soon as hereturns. “If you don’t live as a true follower ofJesus, you won’t make any difference.Don’t live an ordinary life—anyone cando that.” Bekele Shanko, vice presidentof Campus Crusade’s Global ChurchMovements, issued this challenge toopen the Pamoja III conference inNigeria. Named for the Swahili wordfor “togetherness,” the Pamojaconferences first began in 2006.Starting December 28, 2012, andlasting nearly a week, Pamoja III sawmore than 2,000 people—students, professionals and pastors—comefrom 34 different countries. Theconference’s goal was to help raise anew generation of transformationalleaders for a new Africa and beyond.

The JESUS Film™ played asignificant role in the conference andpresented seminars—one of whichserved to rally “mobile missionaries”to use Jesus Film Media materials.Participants with smartphonesreceived instruction to access JESUSand its derivatives using their phones.

One of the most critical features ofthe Jesus Film Media platform is thatpartners can use it as a base on whichto build their own ministry tools. TheKolo Africa app—launched at PamojaIII—is a perfect example of thisopportunity. Using our platform, theKolo Group developed this app toprovide access to media from theJESUS Film—as well as from otherministries—in 500 African languages. The app is available atwww.koloapp.org. It allows individualsto identify their language by choosingthe flag of their country and thenlistening to an audio clip of thelanguage to ensure it is the correctone. “Listening to the Book of Galatians[using the Kolo Africa app in mylanguage] made the story come alivemore than even the English,” enthusedthe president of a partner ministry in

Nigeria. “I followed along with the storyand letter of Paul more clearly. Wow!What an incredible tool for today’smissions. This is too great.”
