6. Community Care Centre for HIV/AIDS affected persons 7. Chetna Centre, Darjeeling More, Siliguri THE BEGINNING OF JESU ASHRAM: The aim of Jesu Ashram is to serve the poor and destitute sick. Brother Bob and his volunteers with whom he went around Siliguri Railway stations in search of poor sick people were not trained in medicine therefore they could only give medicines for headache, cold and cough. As the time went by whenever they found seriously sick they would take them to their residence and look after treat them. Within a year Brother Bob saw that he needed more space, therefore he moved out of the city to a countryside in Matigara. He built thatched houses and divided his small group into two. One group would look after the patients at Matigara and other at Siliguri. He felt the need of a female co-worker. A young girl called Miss Anna Ekka came to his rescue. She had just finished her training in nursing. She was a dynamic person. Seeing her capabilities Brother put her as an in- charge to look after the patients at Jesu Ashram, Matigara. The group at Siliguri Jesu Ashram would go around bus stand and train-station looking for poor and helpless sick people. Whenever they found such people they would send them to Matigara Jesu Ashram. Br. Bob felt it would be nice to have a nun at the place. Therefore he requested the provincial of the Daughters of the Cross and he was granted Sr. Ivana, F.C. She was from Croatia joined Jesu Ashram at the age of 60. At this age also she learnt to drive Auto-Rickshaw. She was motherly and inspiration to all. In 1972 Br. Bob shifted the whole Ashram to Matigara. Thus Matigara became into a sort of health care centre for the poor and destitute sick. In here, sick and destitute were treated with leprosy and tuberculosis and this became our priority. All those who were rejected and ostracized from their families and societies found place to stay. All those who could not get treatment for their sickness and nobody would touch them found solace in Jesu Ashram. Bro. Bob erected thatched houses for them and kept them there. Even when sick needed operation, they were operated under the plastic shade. In due course of time Jesu Ashram grew big. The thatched houses gave way to concrete buildings. Jesu Ashram multiplied its infrastructure to match the needs of the poor and destitute sick. Sr. Ivana passed away at the age of 90 in Jesu Ashram on 10/4/2002. Br. Bob had a heart problem. He too passed away at the age of 76 in Calcutta, a year later, on 20.12.2003. Fr. Julius Kujur SJ is the new Director of Jesu Ashram since year 2003.Jesu Ashram – a health care centre in Matigara continues all its activities as before in serving poor and destitute sick. The year 2011 – 2012 has been very good for Jesu Ashram. We could serve many poor and destitute sick this year too because of the generous donations of many people both national and international. Many innovative ways were explored in serving the poor…………….. !

(1) We opened up a website (www. jesuashram.org) in order to reach out to the people globally. (2) We started blogs with which people could just type jesu ashram and come to know about our activities. (3) We came up with brochure that was shared with so many people to speak about our activities. (4) We began construction of new building for the leprosy ward with SOS, India (Italy). (5) We also started cleaning and renovating general ward for better sanitation facility and health services.

FEAST DAY CELEBRATION OF THE WARDS

All the wards of Jesu Ashram have their patron saints. St Damien of Molokai (Hawaii), Carmelite St Teresa of the Child Jesus, Jesuit St Aloysius Gonzaga and Dominican St Martin De Porres are the patron saint for the Leprosy wards, Tuberculosis wards, HIV/AIDS wards and General wards respectively. On the feast day of each of the saints the particular wards organize prayer services, entertainment program and give a brief sketch of the saint to the inmates.

BURYING UNCLAIMED BODIES In Jesu Ashram poor and destitute sick have special place. Many poor and destitute sick come here for treatment because they do not have place elsewhere. Often the advance cases cannot be dealt with and patients die in wards. Sad to say, some have no relatives coming forward to claim the deceased, so we bury them in our nearby cemetery. This year we buried 31 unclaimed bodies. LEPROSY DEPARTMENT Leprosy caused by Mycobacterium Leprae, is an age old disease which until recently affected millions of people in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Leprsoy is feared mainly because of the deformities it produces and the consequent social stigma and discrimination. The desease primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves. It can also affect the upper respiratory tract, eyes, liver , testes, muscles and bones. Today Leprosy is no more a dreaded disease as it is curable through multidrug theraphy(MDT) and the disease is capable of being eliminated as a public health problem through organized case detection and treatment. During the past 15 years , over 14 million Leprosy patients have been cured through MDT. Through early detection and prompt treatment, over 3 million people are estimated to have been prevented form getting deformities. [ Year 2011 – 2012 has been extreme challenging for Jesu Ashram. There has been 1215 leprosy patients who came to our Out door clinic in Darjeeling More, near Siliguri. In which there were 555 Male, 55 Male Children, 537 Female and 68 Female Children patients. Our indoor spaces at the centre have been full for the whole year]

In January we saw a laying of foundation for the new leprosy building which will give our patients better infrastructure for their treatment at the centre in near future. Certainly we shall have clean, spacious, airy environment besides all the facility within the infrastructure being built. We are indeed very grateful to SOS INDIA in Italy and Catholic Bishops Conference of Italy [CBCI) for funding us to build new leprosy ward. A portion of the old building [ male ward and opd] was demolished to give way to the new building. The male patients were shifted to the upper floor of the HIV/AIDS building in the campus. The female leprosy patients will continue to live in the old ward till the new building erected. Certainly we have certain inconveniences for the staff to serve the leprosy patients at present but we do not mind them because in a year or two we shall have the finest building in our campus for the leprosy patients.

ORGANIZING BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

Some patients from Jesu Ashram are referred to Medical College Hospital. Some requiring blood transfusions had no relatives able to give the required blood. Jesu Ashram had to organize the required transfusions. REUNION

Kancha, a dumb and illiterate man, now 35 years old was lost from his family 25 years back. Falling ill he was brought to Jesu Ashram for his treatment by some good Samaritans who did not know much about him. While he was here some patients guessed that he is Kancha. So his family members were informed. People from the family came to see him and found that he is their long lost brother. They took him home with joy and are seeing to his medication.

NURSING STUDENTS

In the year 2011, 16 nursing students joined for the community health training programme and 6 students were promoted to 2nd year. 10 nursing students completed two years of training and a year of experience. The first year students were given a 3 months crash course in English and initiated into nursing training. The second year students went for a month long exposure programmes in a nearby Super Specialty hospital, and a government primary health Centre. These exposure programmes are very enriching experiences. Of the students who completed their 2 year training 4 are working in Jesu Ashram and 6 are working elsewhere. It is good to know that all are gainfully employed.

SANJANA AFTER PLASTIC SURGERY

LEPROSY SURVEY A three day Leprosy Survey in May was conducted, by Second year nursing students and staff from Jesu Ashram. They went from house to house in Bhuta Bari village. Although there were many successfully treated former patents, only three new cases were found, one of them in an advanced stage. They were all told to attend any Government health centre or visit Jesu Ashram at Matigara health care centre or Leprosy Out Door Clinic of Jesu Ashram in Siliguri. However only the advanced case came to Jesu Ashram for treatment.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT Many HIV/AIDS patients of Jesu Ashram come from poor families. They have difficulties in having daily two proper nutritional meals at home. Regular intake of nutrients are very important for effective control of sickness.Three medical social workers from Jesu Ashram regularly visit our HIV/AIDS patients at their homes. Often our patients are found in heart breaking situations. Once we visited a family of three: 1(negative) and 2 mother and child(HIV positive). The father of the family committed suicide beacuase he was HIV infected. We saw that their meal consisted of plain boiled rice and salt. The reason was: no one in the family had any job for their sustenance. Mother collected stone from the nearby river and broke them with a hand-held hammer to sell them to builders so that she could at least feed her dying children. Seeing this, Jesu Ashram decided to do something for the children of such families. Jesu Ashram started nutritional support to the HIV infected children on 04.06.2011 on a monthly basis. To collect their nutritional support, parents or guardian have to bring their children to Jesu Ashram. The children are examined by the Doctor every month on a regular basis. 30 such children are being supported in this programme now.

ADDITION AND DEDUCTION IN THE WORK FORCE

To make the work of Jesu Ashram more effective Fr. Alvin Minj, SJ was appointed as an Assistant Director on 1.6.11. Dr. Paul discontinued his services to Jesu Ashram. A little later a retired army doctor Dr. Anand Ramesh joined Jesu Ashram. It was so unfortunate that this year we lost our beloved Dr. Sadhya because of his cardiac arrest. May his Soul rest in peace
