Hourihan iscoming off a season in which she wasthird in the Shore Conference in strike-outs and had a 1.94 ERA. The ScarletFliers rely heavily on her pitching towin games.

St. John Vianney sophomore KatieBeriont has the biggest shoes to fill forthe graduated ace, Jen Retzer. Baseball Players to Watch: OutfieldJERSEY SHORE — In the Little Leagueranks, playing outfield is sometimes con-sidered a demotion. Struggling withground balls? Go stand out in right fieldand maybe a ball will come your way oncea game. But in high school baseball, theoutfield is an important position forshagging fly balls, tracking down linedrives and throwing runners out from adistance. The Shore Conference has sev-eral key outfielders to watch this year.

Red Bank Catholic’s offense is pacedby a pair of outfielders in seniors AndrewLaMura and Nick Liggett. Raritan alsohas a duo capable of driving in runs withJake Vanderveer (42 RBIs in 2011) andMike Langan. Freehold Township hopesto stay in the mix in the Class A NorthDivision on the back of centerfielderNick Cardamone. “We feel very confi-dent. Our team gets along well and I don’tsee a team that we can’t compete with,”explained Cardamone who is already com-mitted to play at St. Peter’s next year. “Ithink we are going to surprise some peo-ple.”

Other notable outfielders include a pairof Holmdel sluggers. Cole Whatley is aNorthern Kentucky recruit and EricScamardella is headed to Catholic in thefall. Also, keep an eye on ChristianBrothers Academy junior Matt Pidich whowill play the outfield when he’s not pitching.

Baseball Players to Watch: PitchersJERSEY SHORE— The ShoreConference has produced some fine pitch-ers in recent seasons. This spring hasanother crop of pitching talent ready toshine. Monmouth Regional’s LukeCahill is one of the top returning startersto watch. As a junior, he had a 2.29 ERAwith 69 strikeouts. Cahill also batted ata .413 clip and spent some time at thirdbase. He’ll play both positions at SetonHall next year. “I really liked the programthere,” Cahill said of Seton Hall. “Thecoaching staff and the team was a nicegroup and it was close to home so I cankeep family support nearby. I’ll playboth pitcher and third base there so I willjust try to have a good work ethic thisyear and maybe work to get my curveballa little stronger on the mound.”

While Cahill is clearly the headliner ofthe Monmouth Regional staff, a fewschools lean on a pair of stars atop therotation. Barnegat will be a force withWake Forest-bound Mark McCoy and fel-low senior Ray Waszkiewicz. Red BankCatholic’s duo Ryan Spahr (5-1, 3.35ERA) and Ryan Slate (6-0, 4.70 ERA)are formidable starters. ChristianBrothers Academy has juniors Joe Dudekand Matt Pidich; Holmdel has seniorsDylan Baxter and Cole Whatley. TomsRiver South will also have a strong toptwo when Kyle Driscoll returns from a

broken non-pitching arm in a few weeksand joins fellow senior John Leiter in therotation.

Other top arms in the ShoreConference include Rutgers-boundHowie Brey of Middletown South. Breyhad a 1.94 ERA and struck out nearly abatter per inning last season for theEagles. Wall’s Harry Paytas is headed toMonmouth University and JacksonLiberty’s John Holland is going toFelician for baseball. JERSEY SHORE—Although a lot of the soft-ball talent in the ShoreConference is concentratedat the infield positions andpitcher’s mound, there area few outfielders to keep aneye on this spring. Oneoutfielder especially happyto be back on the field isToms River East juniorcenterfielder SarahBencivenga. As a freshmanin 2010, she led theRaiders in hits. However,Bencivenga missed all ofthe 2011 season due toinjury.

“Coming off the injury, I’m just excited to get backout there,” said Bencivenga. “I have a whole new appre-ciation for the game.” She’ll be joined in the outfieldby senior Brianna Dziedzic. The Ramapo commit ledthe Raiders in batting average in each of the last twoseasons.

Red Bank Catholic (RBC,) while hit hard by gradua-tion, returns senior Gabrielle Klecko in centerfield. Sheled the Caseys in stolen bases and had the highest onbase percentage on the roster. Meanwhile, RBC’s rival,St. John Vianney, returns Amanda Durham who had a.400 batting average with 10 doubles and 11 stolenbases.“We always look forward to our game against SJV,”explained Klecko. “You know it’s going to be good com-petition.”

Other players to watch this season include Howell out-fielder Cassidy Brzozowski Ocean junior Jenna Ambrosio.Brzozowski was an All-Shore selection in 2010 andAmbrosio will split time between shortstop and right field.

B y Ted KaiserRED BANK— Winning aschool record 26 baseballgames including a streak of24 in a row will garner someattention. There will be plen-ty of spotlights on the RedBank Catholic (RBC) base-ball this spring. After a 26-4season that included a ShoreConference Tournamentchampionship, the Caseysreturn several key playersand look poised to make apush for numerous titles. Theexpectations are obviouslyhigh, but RBC is handlingthem well. “We feel we have agreat team and our teamchemistry is good,” said sen-ior centerfielder AndrewLaMura.

LaMura is one of thosereturning starters counted onto lead the Caseys. He was afirst-team All-Shore selec-tion with a .413 battingaverage as a junior and hascommitted to play baseballat East Carolina Universitynext year. Nick Liggett isanother returning outfielder/pitcher whohas committed to Delaware. The rest of thepitching staff is made up of senior RyanSpahr, Ryan Slate and Mike Rescigno.Spahr is the ace and a Wagner commit.Slate is undecided for college, but followsin the family pitching legacy after hisbrother Kyle who starred for ChristianBrothers Academy. Rescigno is a risingjunior who will also see time at third base.“Obviously we want to win states, win theShore Conference and really just try for allfive baseball championships,” explainedSpahr. “Everyone knows we’re going to

score runs with our offense. We just haveto pitch and throw strikes.”

RBC will have their share of toughopponents to face if they hope to captureall five of the coveted titles including theClass B North Division, the ShoreConference Tournament, the MonmouthCounty Tournament, the Non-Public SouthA crown and the overall Non-Public groupchampionship. “We just have to take itone game at a time,” said Ryan Slate. “Wejust have to come out with the same inten-sity every game if we want to accomplishour goals.”

Lofty Expectations for RBC Baseball

B y Ted KaiserTOMS RIVER— It has beena dominating stretch for theToms River East softballteam. The Raiders have wonfive straight Class A SouthDivision championshipsand are loaded for anotherrun this spring. BrickMemorial and JacksonMemorial figure to be com-petitive challengers, espe-cially since the Mustangswere the first divisional foeto beat the Raiders since2006 when they won lastseason. But TR East returnsthe kind of talent that cham-pionship teams are made of.

Back in the fold is theirace pitcher, junior JordanWeed. In addition to starringon the hill Weed led theRaiders in homeruns. Weedhas already given a verbalcommitment to BostonCollege. “We have highexpectations, but we doevery year so it is nothingdifferent,” said Weed. “The bar isalways set extremely high.”

Fellow junior Sarah Bencivengareturns at center field after missing the2011 due to injury. She is happy to beback and says she has a whole newappreciation for the game after beingaway. As a freshman, Bencivenga ledthe team in hits and she could also fac-tor in to pitch some innings. Seniorshortstop Corey Schwartz anchors theteam’s defense. The University of

Maryland commit had the highest field-ing percentage on the team last season.Outfielder Brianna Dziedzic has heldthe top batting average on the squad forthe past two years.

The Raiders might not go unscathedthrough their division schedule withBrick Memorial and Jackson Memoriallooking strong. But the experience andtalent still favors TR East for a sixthconsecutive division title and maybemore.

The biggest chal-

Jackson Memorial A Dominant Force This SeasonBy Jim HintelmannMIDDLETOWN TOWN-SHIP - Although losingthree quality players, JackieBates (Rutgers), Julie Kuhn(Northwestern) and AloiMuratore (Brookdale),Middletown South HeadCoach Tom Erbig is stilllooking for a solid seasonand the Eagles, who wonthe A Division North andNJSIAA Central JerseyGroup III titles last year, should be among the area'sbest, especially with sevenreturning starters."Replacing them will bedifficult," admitted Erbig,"but the three new kidshave the ability to replacethem. They just need torefine a few things. I see noreason why we can't still becontenders in the divisionand post season."

The three new players arethird baseman AbbeySchultz, catcher VeronicaZega and outfielder AlexCorrigan and all of themhave good potential.

The seven returningstarters include: shortstopJill Troiano who hit .480with seven home runs and32 RBIs last year, outfield-ers Taylor Landis (.327 / 32

hits) and Grace Heller, sec-ond baseman Alex Jacinto and pitchers Allison Nolan(12-3, 1:40 era) and AliPomajersky (12-3, 1:40era). "Our past teams haveso much tradition," saidTroiano, a four- year varsitystarter who played onSouth's 2009 and 2010 statechampion teams. "We lostsome key players but thenew players have the poten-tial. We just have to workhard and put everythingtogether. We want to go outwith a state title. We alwaysknow how to win.”

Troiano is also an out-standing player in fieldhockey, but has not decidedon a college at this time.“Troiano hits well withpower," said Erbig. "She isa top notch player. The remaining players areinfielder Kelsey Lawrence, catcher Megan Mitteen-zweig and outfieldersMegan Davidson, CourtneyTaylor and KristenPomajersky.

South lost to St. JohnVianney in both the ShoreConference and MonmouthCounty tournaments lastyear along with losing to

Sparta in the NJSIAAGroup III finals, but Erbigremains hopeful eventhough the Eagles move up

to Group IV this year. "Weplay almost all Group IVteams anyway," said Erbig, whose team went 24-7 a

year ago. "Our defense isgood and our hitting issolid. All we need are thenew players to step up."

By Ted KaiserHAZLET— The St. John Vianney(SJV) softball team has ruled theroost in the Class A Central Divisionover the past few seasons. There isnow doubt that the 2012 campaignwill be another big one for theLancers who figure to be one of thetop teams in New Jersey. But a divi-sion title will not be a cake walk forthe defending champions. Raritan andHolmdel are chomping at the bit fortheir chance at the powerhouse pro-gram.

Last season, Raritan (17-8, 8-4)dropped both games to the Lancers(29-1-1, 12-0), however, a close 1-0defeat in their second meeting provedthat the Rockets could hang tough. Ithelps to have Head Coach AadoKommendant, the former head coachat SJV, in their dugout.“Coach K prepares us verywell for the games with allkinds of knowledge fromprevious years and any-thing to get us ready for ouropponent,” said seniorshortstop Bobbie Boehlerwho batted .433 in 2011.

The Rockets return sev-eral key starters includingBoehler and first-team All-Shore selection TiffanyDahlquist at first base.Dahlquist hit at a .476 cliplast season. On the moundwill be sophomore Emily

Schaffer who won nine games andhad a 1.17 ERA as a freshman. Shewas a third-team All-Shore selectionin her first season. “We have newplayers coming up this season,”explained Dahlquist referring to afreshman class that might field atleast two starters. “We’re comingtogether as a team and look forwardto being competitive.”

Meanwhile, Holmdel (15-9, 9-3)was last season’s second place finish-er in the Class A Central standings. The Hornets return five startersincluding top hitters Lauren Reidy atcenter field and Emily Morgan atshortstop. Emma Brody will get mostof the starts at pitcher with EmmaKatz out for the season due to a kneeinjury.

Just like thematter, diamonds are madeof baseball and its deriva-tives are solid foundationsin American sports today. With its origins in upstateNew York, every participanton any level can't help butfeel a bit patriotic everytime they hear the crack ofthe bat. I have representedMLB players and their jour-ney is graceless and trav-eled in their quest for theMajors, yet one elementresonates and it’s their per-severance. Perseverance inany goal is always the willto win and do better.

Perseverance in one areaof activity rubs off on otherareas because wanting towin and move to the nextlevel becomes a state ofmind. By Josh LashleyOf course there will be some

obstacles for the Toms RiverSouth High School baseballteam to overcome this springbut that comes with the territo-ry. The good news for thoseinvolved with the Indians pro-gram is that this squad appearsto have the type of chemistryand team unity needed to han-dle adversity despite the lossof several players from lastyear’s squad.

While the Indians lost a sig-nificant amount of players tograduation in 2011, HeadCoach Ken Frank is optimisticabout this season. Toms RiverSouth had an overall record of16-9 and advanced to theNJSIAA South Jersey GroupIV semifinal round before los-ing a one-run game to Millvillelast spring. Frank’s great career will likely reach a

memorable milestone this yearas he is just four victoriesaway from becoming the all-time winningest coach in thehistory of high school baseballin New Jersey. He currentlyhas 751 career victories andthe state record is 754achieved by Tony Ferrainolofrom Memorial High School.“I never like the wordrebuild,’’ Frank said. “We willbe competitive in every gameeven though we graduatedseven starters from last season. The boys always give 100%and would like to continue ourbaseball tradition.’’

Key returning players for theIndians include: Kyle Driscoll(pitcher), RJ Devish (shortstop) and John Leiter (pitcher).Coach Frank mentioned thatthere are a whole host of

players who can earn a varsityletter and make an overall pos-itive impact this season.Among them are: James Burke(pitcher/first base), CaseyCranmer (short stop/ firstbase), Andrew Hourigan (thirdbase), Shane McCullough(designated hitter/first base)and Russell Messler (outfield).“Driscoll is 6’ 7’’ and hassigned with Rutgers,’’ Franksaid. “Leiter had three winslast season and has really got-ten stronger and quicker.Burke and Cranmer had goodpre-seasons to round out ourstaff. Hitting-wise Devish,Hourigan, Burke, McCulloughand Messler have carried ouroffense. We want to be com-petitive in the tough A SouthConference and do well in ournon-conference games.’’

The Beat Goes On At TRS Despite Graduation Losses

Bounty Style Play In The NFL Is Unacceptable PHOTO: FRANCINE ATTARDI

The NFL must act in a very dramaticand definite manner in dealing with theNFL teams who have had a bounty sys-tem that rewards players for injuringopposing players in a game. An NFLcoaching staff cannot allow their playersto be involved in deliberately trying toinjure opposing players. When youreward players who play outside the rulesof the game seeking to hurt their oppo-

nents, you tell players that this type ofbehavior is acceptable on all levels.

Coaches behind the bounty type styleof play must be suspended for a wholeseason. It is impossible to believe that acoach in the NFL could stand in front ofhis team and propose a bounty system.NFL players do not play to injure theiropponents. The NFL players clearlyknow how fragile and brief their careers

can be. NFL players sitting in a teammeeting hearing the bounty systembeing introduced should immediatelylose respect for any NFL coach promot-ing such a program.

Players who play with aggressivelegal position technique skills do nothave to cheat to win a game. The boun-ty system has no place in the NFL andcan leave a bad image of the league. The

coaches that use the bounty systemshould no longer be allowed to have theprivilege of being an NFL coach.Immediate action must be taken by theleague prior to the start of the next sea-son so that similar situations are notrepeated and the game of football as weknow it is not tarnished any further.

By Pat RalphAs one of the most

successful baseballprograms in the stateof New Jersey, theChristian BrothersAcademy (CBA) Coltsenter their 2012 cam-paign with high expec-tations to succeed. With a team comprisedof great senior leader-ship and a talentedgroup of underclass-men, the Colts arefocused on returningbaseball glory back to Lincroft.

Since their last state championshipin 2009, the Colts have had two dis-appointing seasons. Last year, theColts went 11-11 on the season, post-ing a 5-7 record against Class ANorth foes. Even though Class ANorth is one of the most competitiveand talented divisions in the ShoreConference, an under .500 record indivision play is unacceptable forCBA, as anyone who has played forthe program can tell you. With HeadCoach Marty Kenney in commandfor his 38th season in Lincroft, theColts are looking to restore the base-ball glory that has been a key compo-nent to Kenney’s system.

The Colts enter their 2012 season

with three Division I college com-mits. Highlighting the group is juniorfirst basemen/pitcher Joe Dudek, whohas verbally committed to play forthe Tar Heels of North Carolina incollege. Dudek hit .352 last year withfive home runs and batted in nineRBI’s. He is considered by manyexperts to be the best slugger in theShore Conference and one of the bestin New Jersey. On the diamond, hefinished with an ERA of 2.13. Alongwith Dudek, junior pitcher MattPidich, who has committed to play atthe University of Pittsburgh for col-lege, spotted a 1.72 ERA on themound for the Colts.

The leader of the CBA pack is sen-ior captain shortstop Sean Arnott,

who is committed to play at TempleUniversity next year. Last season,Arnott batted in 12 RBI’s and is con-fident the Colts will have a good sea-son. “We have a lot of potential onour squad and we’re really happyabout how we have played in ourscrimmages. Our goal is to take it onegame at a time,” explained Arnott.

One of the keys to success for theColts this year will be their impres-sive pitching staff. One of thestrongest in the Shore Conference, the Colts have a junior-led pitchingcore of Dudek, Pidich, and Division Ipitching prospect John McCarren, who has yet to commit to any college. In addition to this talented group of juniors, the Colts have a solid group

of senior pitchers in players likeBobby Byrne, Dave Rosone,Mike Yacabonis and SeanClarke. Another key for theColts this season will be theoffensive production they areable to get in games. The domi-nating pitching will be a con-stant for this squad; it will bethe offense that determines howfar this team can go in localtournaments and the state tour-nament.

The Colts are projected bymany to win the Class A North

division this year and contend for notonly a Shore ConferenceChampionship and a MonmouthCounty Championship, but possibly astate championship. The Colts openup their season on Monday, April2nd, on the road against FreeholdTownship, while their home opener isWednesday, April 4th, againstcrosstown rival Middletown South. However, the biggest game of theseason for the Colts will no doubt beon May 5th, when the Colts take onarchrival Red Bank Catholic, a verypossible Monmouth CountyTournament title game and ShoreConference Tournament title gamepreview.

By Jim HintelmannRED BANK - It was a mixedsoftball season for Red BankCatholic (RBC) last season, despite a 22-5 record. RBCwon the B Division North titleand handed state power St.John Vianney (SJV) its lonesetback, 6-5, with a six-runrally in the bottom of the sev-enth inning. RBC, though, failed to win any other titles.SJV ending up winning theNJSIAA Non-Public A, ShoreConference and MonmouthCounty championships, and theLady Lancers will be the teamto beat in all three tournamentsagain this spring.

Despite losing some keyplayers by graduation, RBCHead Coach Tony Flego isoptimistic about the upcomingseason and expects to make astrong challenge for all threetitles. "We expect to competeand win a tournament," saidFlego. "I would be disappoint-ed if we didn't. OceanTownship and Neptune will bethe teams to beat in the B Northdivision."

Five starters return, led byoutfielder Gabby Klecko, oneof the Shore's top hitters a yearago with a .600 batting aver-age. She will be playing at the

University of Delaware next year.

"She's one of the best playersat the Shore," said Flego. "Shehas great speed and alwaysputs the ball in play. She keepsthe defense on its toes."

Klecko is confident goinginto the season. "Other teamsmight be overlooking usbecause we lost a lot of playersbut we'll be okay. Our pitchingstaff is young but has talent;I'm looking forward to the sea-son."
