Boston Massacre

• In 1770, Redcoats open fire and kill innocent colonists

•  Caused tensions between the US and Britain to rise, one of the leading causes of the Revolutionary War

• April 18, 1775, Paul Revere warns the people that the British are coming

• Minute Men faced the Redcoats and a shot was fired

• Start of the American Revolution

Congress Adopts Declaration of Independence and the US is born

• July 4, 1776, congress adopts the Declaration of Independence

• America declares itself an independent power and creates the foundation of the government

Washington crosses the Delaware

• December 1776, Washington crosses the Delaware and launches a suprise attack on Hessian Mercenaries

• Victory boosts American morale

Treaty of Paris

• September 3, 1983, United States and Great Britain sign the Treaty of Paris

•  The United States are recognized as an independent power and the war ends

Forming a National Government

• John Dickinson prepared a draft National Constitution, but it could not command much support. 

• Articles of confederation were submitted to the states of ratification. 

• Maryland ratified the document. 

State Republican Governments

• Connecticut and Rhode Island continued under their colonial charters well into the nineteenth century. 

• In 1763, Britain grew out of the experience of the colonists.

Social Reform

• In 1786, Virginia's Church and State separated. • In the 1830's, Massachusetts ended public support for

Congressional Churches. • In 1763, Colonists thought parliament was trying to

make slaves again. • In November 1775, Lord Dunmore proclaimed that all

slaves able and willing to bear arms.• In 1780, Northern States did away with slavery.• In 1782, more than 10,000 slaves were freed in

Virginia. • In 1783, the Massachusetts State Supreme Court ruled

slavery unconstitutional. 

Effects of the Revolution on Women

• In 1782, Deborah Sampson (Born in1760) enlisted in the Massachusetts Militia under the name Timothy Thayer. 

• In 1797, Deborah Sampson became the first women to serve as a soldier in the Revolution.

• In 1791, a South Carolina judge said that the law protecting the absolute domain of husbands was the offspring of a rude and barbarous age.

Growth of National Spirit

• In 1775, John Marshall joined the Continental Army.

• In 1777-1778, John Marshall endured the winter at Valley Forge.
