In1975IjoinedtheComputersintheCurriculumProjectatChelseaCollege,UniversityofLondon.Thiswasanational,highlyinnovativeprojecttodevelopcomputer‐basedlearningcurriculaforteachingscienceinuniversitiesandseniorhighschools.

ImovedtotheOpenUniversity(OU)whereIstartedworkingonmyPh.D.part‐timein1980

whileworkingfull‐timefortheuniversity.In1985myPh.D.wasawardedandIwasalsogivenimmediatetenureattheOpenUniversity,whichwasanunusualhonor.

In1994IbecameResearchProfessorofInformationSystemsandfoundingDirectoroftheCenterforPeopleandSystemsInteractionatSouthBankUniversity,London,UK.In1996ImovedtotheUSAandbecameProfessorandChairofInformationSystemsDepartmentatUniversityofMarylandBaltimoreCountyinJanuary1997.IheldthispositionforsixyearsandthoughIwasencouragedtocontinue,Iwantedtoreturntoresearchandteaching.DuringthetimethatIwasdepartmentchairwedoubledthenumberoffaculty,revisedallourprograms,developedadistanceMastersprogram,increasedourresearchproductivity,andbegantoplannewprogramsinhuman‐computerinteraction.

In2005IacceptedapositionasProfessorofInformationStudiesintheCollegeofInformationStudiesattheUniversityofMaryland,CollegePark.WithinashorttimeIwasinvitedtobecomeDeanoftheCollegeofInformationStudies–Maryland’siSchoolhttp://ischool.umd.edu/Seepart4formoreinformation.

2.ResearchandScholarship

AftercompletingmyPh.D.in1985myresearchfocusedoninformationsystems,computer‐mediatedcommunication,human‐computerinteraction,andonlinecommunities.Iwasalsoconsideredmyselftobeanexpertindistanceeducationuntilthemid‐90s,havingspentthebulkofmycareer–some15years–attheBritishOpenUniversity.Whilethiswasmyday‐to‐dayjob,IdidnotpublishmanyresearcharticlesondistanceeducationasitwasnotencouragedorvaluedbytheComputingDepartmentandtheCollegeofMathematicsandComputing.ThisisperhapsashameasIwasaleaderinsomeinnovativeaspectsthataredescribedintheteachingsectionofthisdocument.Mycurrentresearchfocusesonthedesignandmanagementofdigitalsocialmedia.Iamparticularlyinterestedinwhatmotivatesparticipationandtherelationshipbetweenusability(designofthehuman‐computerinterfaceforeaseofuse)andsociability(technicaldesignandsocialmanagement–e.g.,moderation,policies,supportforevolvingnorms‐thatsupportsocialinteraction)inonlinesocialspaces.

2005DeanCollegeofInformationStudies–Maryland’siSchool,UniversityofMaryland

ThechargeIreceivedfromtheProvostinJanuary2005wastoworkwithfacultyandstafftostrengthentheCollegeofInformationStudieswithintheUniversityofMarylandandtoincreaseitsnationalprominence.IwasinstructedtomaintainanddeveloptheMasterofLibraryScience(MLS)program–thesignatureprogramoftheCollege,increaseenrollmentanddeveloptheMasterofInformationManagementprogram(MIM)–anewprogramjustthreeyearsoldatthattime,reviseandexpandthedoctoralprogram,andbuildexcellenceinresearchandscholarshipintopicsthatinclude:informationstorage,search,retrieval,andcommunicationamongdifferentusercommunitiesfordifferentpurposes.

WiththesupportandhardworkofthefacultyandstaffwehavemovedupthreepositionsintheUSNewsandWorldReportrankingsfromthirteenthnationallyto10th,8thamongpubicuniversities.Someinitiativesthatcontributedtothissuccessinclude:

Morethandoublingthenumberoffacultyandstaff.In2009thereare23tenure‐trackandtenuredfaculty,professorsofthepractice,visitingprofessors(16.5FTE),includingthedean,and10staff,andanassociatedean.

Refurbishingourspaceincludingcreatinglabsonthesecondfloortoprovidebetterresearchandteachingfacilities.

ContinuingtosupportanddeveloptheMasterofLibraryScience(MLS)program,whichhas344studentsinfall2009.TheprogramwasreaccreditationbytheAmericanLibraryAssociationin2006.Threenewtracksandconcentrationshavebeencreatedandwearecurrentlyestablishingtwomore.TheprogramisalsonowofferedatShadyGrove.

ContinuingtosupportanddevelopMasterofInformationManagement(MIM)program,whichhas146studentsinfall2009.Twonewtrackshavebeendeveloped.

In2008theiSchoolbecameajointsponsoroftheinternationallyacclaimedHuman‐ComputerInteractionLaboratory.TheCenterforInformationPolicybecametheCenterofInformationPolicyandElectronicGovernment.CentersfortheAdvancedStudiesofCommunitiesandInformation,LibraryInnovationandInformation,andCloudComputingwerecreated.

StronglybrandingandmarketingtheCollegeincludingcreatingitsidentifyasanInformationSchool–iSchool.WehavecreatedaboardofvisitorstoadvisetheiSchoolondevelopmentinitiativesandwehavegreatlyincreasedthenumberofeventsorganizedbyfaculty,staffandstudents.

Oneofmyaimsasdepartmentchairwastoincreaseresearchproductivity,whichwebeganbymakinggoodhiresatthejuniorlevelandalsobycreatingthefirstnamedchairofInformationSystemsatUMBC.Thisenabledustoattractatalentedseniorpersonandshortlyafterwardsweappointedasecondseniorfacultymember.Withthehelpofthesenewhireswestartedtoincreaseoursponsoredresearchtoaround$1.5‐$2milliondollarsperannumandcreatedafoundationonwhichtobuildmoresponsoredresearch.Wealsodramaticallyincreasedthenumberofjournalandconferencepaperswritteneachyear.AnewresearchcenterandresearchgroupswerealsocreatedandwerevisedthePh.D.program.

Otherdevelopmentsincludedrestructuringtheundergraduateandmastersprogramstomakethemmorecoherentandimproveouracademicstandards.WecreatedanewMastersprogramthatisdeliveredthroughdistanceeducationandmountedanoff‐campusundergraduateprogramatShadyGroveCampusinMontgomeryCounty.Thisbeganinfall2001andcontinuestogrow.

Byfall2001therewereapproximately1500undergraduatemajors,160Mastersstudentsintheface‐to‐faceprogram,100Mastersstudentsintheonlineprogramand30Ph.D.students.Typicallywegraduated1‐3Ph.D.studentseachyear.
