At John Burroughs Middle School, students and teachers are evolving into a culture that sees education from the lens of making progress towards using technology as a tool to enhance learning, prepare students to be college ready, and become participants in the global landscape.

(JB teachers attend Schoology Professional Development sessions, strategically designed around differentiation, led by teachers).

Schoology, a learning management system has been implemented at JB in 2015 along with the 1 to 1 iPad initiative. Schoology allows teachers and students to create, manage, and share content and resources in the educational technology.

(Principal, Dr. Martinez, facilitating the setup of student accounts).

According to the National Education Technology Plan, “The challenge for our education system is to leverage technology to create relevant learning experiences that mirror students’ daily lives and the reality of their futures.”

The stakeholders at JB understand the various issues that comes along with tackling this challenge. However, with the “growth mindset” outlook of our teachers, students

and administrators, JB continues to be on the forefront in their efforts to reach their goal.

(Students use iPad to engage in virtual classroom during class).

Stand Up, Speak Out to Bullying Students at JB welcomed Meredith O’ Connor, anti-bullying activist, American singer-songwriter, actress and model to the school-wide Anti-Bullying assembly at Burroughs Middle School. Each year, students receive a free anti-bullying t-shirt designed by a student at John Burroughs MS as a way to engage all students to partake in the positive school wide behavior.

The Los Angeles Unified School District is committed to providing a safe learning and working environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, “One out of every four students (22%) report being bullied during the school year.” In collaboration with the JB Intervention Counseling Department and the JB Administration works hard to create a healthy environment where all students can learn.

(Susan Armendariz, AP of Discipline speaks to students during the assembly about positive behavior).

Ms. Armendariz reminds the school community that “every student has the right to learn in a safe, bullying free environment. Our mandate as educators is to do everything necessary to support all students to learn.”
