    TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Collaboration is the core of my theatrical philosophy. As a director I feel that I do my best work when I am able tocreate an environment that promotes an open and honest dialogue with all of my collaborators. The comfort-levelcreated in this environment allows each collaborator to feel ownership and personal investment in the process.

As an educator, I find it important to run my classroom the same way. Only by setting a professional yet safe andcaring environment can acting students truly flourish in finding their own artistic voices. I feel Viewpoints can beinstrumental in this as it trains actors to harness total control over their performance while still working within theboundaries set down for them, making them ideal collaborators. At the core of my methodology are the following priorities:

Encouraging individuals to discover and draw upon their instincts to inform their work Guiding actors and students to step outside their comfort zones, make bold physical choices Creating opportunities for students to assess, reflect upon and discuss the work they have done Encouraging and supporting students embarking on self-guided work

I have over ten years of educational experience with the Los Angeles Unified School District, focusing primarily inSpecial Education.

At UCSD I gained invaluable experience teaching acting classes to college level students. The classes I havetaught so far focus on a combination of Viewpoints, traditional Stanislavsky-based technique (mixed with someMichael Chekhov and Grotowski exercises) and text analysis. This gives the students a very comprehensive setof performance skills. I would love to have the opportunity to spend a whole quarter or semester on each of thesetechniques, as I feel in the survey-style class we only scratch the surface.
