Current Research Program
I have established a laboratory at WWU to investigate the neurobiology of relapse. With the
collaboration of student laboratory assistants, I am conducting experiments to identify brain areas
involved in relapse. Some of these studies focus on time-dependent changes in relapse behavior that we
have identified as an “incubation of craving”. These studies are being performed with rats trained to self-
administer sucrose or an intravenous cocaine solution. Other projects in the lab involve examining the
generality of the incubation of craving effect, the behavioral pharmacology of the incubation of craving,
and how environmental enrichment might attenuate the incubation of craving. We have just started
examining many of these questions in both male and female subjects. These studies have been, and
continue to be, supported by NIH funds.
