JEFFERSON COUNTY FAIR NEWS | March 2018 2

Our first member spotlight is our President, Mr. Wayne Jackson. Wayne was born and raised on a farm in York, Pennsylvania. He was very active in 4-H and FFA where he showed sheep, pigs, and capons. I am sure many of you do not know what a capon is – I did not know. A capon is a castrated chicken. Wayne showed his livestock at 4 different county fairs and he also showed at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. I think it is safe to say Wayne is a qualified authority member.

So how did he get started at the Jefferson County Fair? He first got involved at the fair by volunteering in the concession

stand. He wanted to start volunteering somewhere to keep busy and get involved in the community. Eventually a spot opened up and he decided to apply – now he is our president and is in his 3rd term.

Wayne truly enjoys that he gets to be involved in every aspect of the fair but his favorite part of the fair is where he started – helping in the concession stand.

Something most people do not realize is that the fair is not just the 3rd week of July. Wayne goes to the fairgrounds just about every day. The day I talked to him he had spent a few hours that morning there cleaning the restrooms and other areas. He may spend a lot of his time at the fairgrounds but he enjoys the time spent. He likes how busy it keeps him.

If Wayne is not at the fairgrounds you are likely to see him at just about any

Brookville sporting event. He enjoyed sports all his life. He follows Brookville wrestling the closest, as he travels to Hershey to watch them compete at the state level.

When you come to the Jefferson County Fair one of the first few faces you will see are Bill and Pat Thompson. They are two of our loyal volunteers who help at the main gate. Pat helps inside the ticket booth and Bill helps our attendees get

their wristbands put on. They both have been volunteering at the Jeff Co Fair for 6 years. Pat was recruited by our vice president, Dave Love and as Bill said they are a ‘packaged deal’ – you can’t have one without the other. In addition to the fair, you may also be greeted by them at the spring Monster Truck Show in May and the Truck and Tractor Pull in June.

Pat used to work at the S&T Bank and Bill was an elementary school teacher at Brookville. They enjoy getting

to see old friends or in Bill’s case, meeting the adult version of his students. They enjoy many of the delicious fair treats but their favorite is the Hot Sausage sandwich from K n S

Concessions.

In addition to volunteering at the fair, Pat is very involved in the church that they attend. She helps with the collections,

their annual flea market, fall festival, and anything else that comes up. In her spare time, Pat likes to quilt and crochet. She has made 21 pillow case dresses that were sent to Haiti.

In Bill’s spare time you can find him crafting something. He enjoys carpentry and remodeled their entire house. He also like to make various things for this grandkids. He has made rocking horses, toy boxes, cradles, tool boxes and much more.

We finished the interview with a few fun questions for Pat.

• Do you talk to yourself, if so,

what do you say? “I talk

myself through any problems I

am facing, especially when

quilting and crafting.”

• If you could be a Crayon what

color would you be in why? “I

would be purple because it is my

granddaughters favorite color

and I like using it when quilting”

The 2018 Pennsylvania State Fair Association Convention was held January 17th – 20th. From Jefferson County there were 5 attendees - our President, Wayne Jackson, member, Stefany Alexander, 2017 Fair Queen, Sadie Plyler, Sadie’s mom, Shannon Plyler, and fair volunteer, Susan Alexander. They have taken some time and shared their experiences with us.

Stefany Alexander

I attended the convention on Friday and Saturday with my mom. I went to 3 seminars: ‘Advertising on a Shoestring Budget’, ‘The Benefits of a Junior Board’, and ‘Marketing to Millennials’. I gained a lot of useful knowledge that I plan to use to help promote the Jefferson County Fair to more people.

I also was able to sneak away from the seminars to sit in on our fair queen’s (Sadie Plyler) speech. She did a fantastic job at representing our fair.

Lastly I was able to walk around the trade show area where a variety of entertainers displayed their talents. I talked to a number of them and have continued to be in contact with some of them to bring some new entertainment options for you

Susan Alexander

I attended the workshop on the 2018 Special Baking Contests. There are a couple minor changes for 2018 with the Junior Baking Contest sponsored by PA Preferred. Some of the fairs present are already conducting the

special contests on special days to draw new audiences. One fair

conducts a Cake Wheel (similar to roulette wheel) to sell their baked goods.

The round table I attended on Friday was Loss of Livestock Fair Entries. It seems that all fairs are decreasing in the number of large animals - especially dairy animals.

Saturday program I attended was "Quilt Squares Trail and Demonstration." Gained some ideas for potential demonstrations and displays to share with the general exhibits committee for the fair.

Wayne Jackson

I attended the convention on Wednesday and Thursday. After getting registered, I attended a seminar called “Embracing Sponsorships” which was about what to say not to say when trying to get money from major sponsors. I also attended some table topics: Alcohol on the Fairgrounds, Benefit Auctions and Other Fundraisers, and Electric for Fairgrounds.

I also got the chance on Wednesday night to attend the entertainment showcase. There were 16 acts and each act had 12 minutes to perform.

Thursday morning, I attended the opening entertainment by the Beverly Belles – a three girl singing group and after that I listened to the keynote speaker, Aaron Alejandro. He talked about his experiences growing up in 4-H and FFA.

JEFFERSON COUNTY FAIR NEWS | March 2018 4

We are all very proud of our 2017 Jefferson County Fair Queen, Miss Sadie Plyler. She did a phenomenal job at representing our fair. Enjoy a recap from her and few pictures from her experience in Hershey.

My weekend competing for the title of Pennsylvania State Fair Queen in Hershey was such an amazing experience to be able to showcase Jefferson County and to be able to express my adoration for the place that I grew up. It was a time for all of the other reigning queens of counties across Pennsylvania to see what each and every one of us had to offer and share about our own individual home county. This gave me a wonderful platform to be able to speak about the place that I know and love, which is Jeff. CO.

The weekend was full of meeting new friends, sharing laughs, and growing as an individual. I was able to be a part of so many great events, exhibits, and

I also had the opportunity to sit in on a great women’s leadership seminar! I started in the weekend with being able to introduce myself on stage, along with sharing a little bit about my home county. My favorite part of the weekend was being able to give a speech titled “Why You Should Come to My Fair.” I was able to express my love for the fair where I grew up to several people who may have never known about what the Jefferson County Fair has to offer. I also was able to share a little more about my fair and myself through a one on one interview portion of the competition.

The weekend schedule was overflowing with things to do and places to be, which made it all the more fun! I have never been a part of anything quite like the PA State Fair Queen Competition and I would never trade my experience for the world. It taught me so much about myself and gave me a deep appreciation for the other amazing young women that I met!

I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be the 2017 Jefferson County Fair Queen. Having experiences such as this have filled my heart with so much joy and have helped to shape my life story. This year has been so rewarding and I am ever so grateful for this experience!

JEFFERSON COUNTY FAIR NEWS | March 2018 5

The February meeting was

cancelled due to a winter

snow storm on the 7th so we

have provided the January

meeting minutes.

Election of Officers for 2018

At the meeting the new officers were

elected, they are:

President – Wayne Jackson

Vice President – Dave Love

Treasurer – Toni Facchine

The position of secretary was not

included in this election since the

recording secretary cannot be a board

member according to the by-laws of

the Authority. Jim Grant will continue

in the position of secretary.

Audience Comments

Jim Walden made a presentation, at

the request of Track Committee

Chairperson Doug Brosius, on behalf

of the Keystone Mini-Rod Pullers for

a track event during Fair Week

2018. They could provide anywhere

from 18 to 25 tractors along with a

fairly good-sized audience

following. They would provide their

own pull sled, scales, and staff to run

the show. They typically do 16-18

events per year, mostly at local fairs

around western Pennsylvania, but

none in this immediate area. The

show would last about 2 hours with 4

classes of tractors at a cost of

$2,200. Helen Walden added a few

more observations about the kind of

show they could provide.

When Doug Brosius was asked how

this event could fit into the fair

schedule, he would combine it with

the current Monday evening shows of

ATV Racing. The ATV show would

follow the Mini-Rods with limited

classes to fill out the rest of the

evening. It is expected that this

combination would enhance the

evening’s entertainment and would

boost the audience interest and

enjoyment.

Following this discussion, Toni

Facchine made a motion that a written

proposal be presented by the Keystone

Mini-Rod Pullers for approval for a

track event on Monday, July 16, 2018

during Fair Week. Doug Brosius

seconded the motion. Motion

carried. The proposed contract will be

mailed to the Fair Secretary as soon as

it is available.

No one else from the audience had

anything to say at this time.

Finance Committee

Toni Facchine made a motion to

approve contracts as presented from

JM Motorsports for a “Freestyle Event

with 4 Monster Trucks and Tuff Truck

Racing” on Saturday, May 16, 2018;

and for the “Championship Double

Figure 8 Race and Power Wheels

Demolition Derby” on Saturday, July

21, 2018 and a similar date in 2019;

and to authorize the appropriate agent

to sign the contracts; as long as

Business Manage Dave Love can

finalize and resolve the $1,200

difference in the contract for Fair

Week. Doug Brosius seconded this

motion, and it was approved by all

members present.

Dave Love made a motion to approve

contracts as presented from Full Pull Productions for the “Keystone

National Big Rigs Pulling Series” on

Saturday, June 16, 2018; and for the

“Truck & Tractor Pulls” on Tuesday,

July 17, 2018 and Wednesday, July

18, 2018 during Fair Week with a

modest increase of $800; and to

authorize the appropriate agent to sign

the contracts. Doug Brosius also

seconded this motion, and it was

approved by all members present.

Following a report on further talks

with Nathan Sharp about a “2018

Summer Kick-Off Bash proposal for

Saturday, June 30, 2018 and

presentation of a possible contract,

Dave Love made a motion to authorize

Nathan Sharp to proceed with plans

for the event on June 30, 2018. Doug

Zimmerman seconded the

motion. Motion carried. It was noted

that no glass bottles would be

permitted on the track if beer were to

be sold down there. Wayne Jackson

offered to run the fair’s concession

stand if it is needed.

Fund Raising and Special Events

Committee

Jim Grant reported that more than 70

letters were mailed on December 13,

2017 to sponsors of the 2017 fair

requesting sponsorships for 2018. So

far there have been 17 responses with

total donations of $5,850. Wayne will

be searching for new acts for the 2018

Fair at the State Convention at

Hershey later this month with

emphasis on replacing the Pig Races

from 2017.

Queen and Princess Committee

Toni Facchine reported that 2017 Fair

Queen Sadie Plyler will be going to

the State Fair Queen Program at

Hershey on January18th now and

expects to have 4 family and friends to

attend as well. Everything is ready!

New Business

Toni Facchine reminded everyone that

tickets are available for the 2018

Spring Fling to be held on Saturday,

May 5th.

Wayne Jackson reported that the next

meeting of the Fair Authority will be

held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018

at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room

at the Jefferson County Conservation

Center.

JEFFERSON COUNTY FAIR NEWS | March 2018 6

The members of the Jefferson County Fair Authority would like to acknowledge and extend their gratitude to Penny of Penny Kay Photography for her dedication and fabulous work at the 2017 Jeff Co Fair. You can expect to continue to see her work being displayed, but for now you can enjoy some of our favorites from 2017.
