Baby Insulin
• Was born being composed of 2 peptide chains– Chains are linked by 2 disulfide bonds
• Made up of an A chain that has 21 amino acids– The A chain is also made up of 2 alpha helices
– Also 3 disulphide bonds
• Chain B is made up of 30 amino acids– 1 alpha helix
– 2 disulphide bonds
– 2 beta turns
• Amino Acid sequence varies
Family Tree
Protein
Enzymes
Insulin
Actin
*There are many
other members of
the protein family
Functions of Insulin’s family
• Builds and repairs body tissues
• Essential body processes ( water
balancing, nutrient transport, and
muscle contractions) require protein
• Source of energy
Insulin’s home
The
pancreas
creates
and
secretes
Insulin
Insulin’s helpful actions
• Regulates energy
• Regulates glucose
• Causes cells in the liver, muscle, and fat
tissues to take up glucose from the blood
and stores it as glycogen in liver and
muscle
Elements that make up Insulin
• Carbon
• Hydrogen
• Nitrogen
• Oxygen

Type One Diabetes
• The body doesn’t produce insulin• Only 5-10% of people with diabetes have this
form• Usually diagnosed in children and young adults• Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert
sugar (glucose), starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life
Symptoms of Type One
• Frequent urination
• Unusual thirst
• Extreme hunger
• No more baby fat- weight loss
• Irritation and sleepiness
Type Two Diabetes
• Most common form of diabetes
• The body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the cells ignore insulin
– Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy
Symptoms of Type Two
• Any of the type 1 symptoms
• Frequent infections
• Blurred vision
• Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
• Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
• Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
Gestational Diabetes
• During pregnancy (usually around 28 weeks) many women are diagnosed
• Doesn’t mean you have/ will have diabetes around birth
• Watch blood glucose levels (blood sugar)
• High blood sugar
– Too much insulin
Why we would be great parents
• We would be energetic parents because Insulin helps us burn glucose so that we can take care of him
• We would take care of Diabetes no matter which type it is– By eating healthy and exercising
• We would show the same love and helping that our kids show for us
Love,
Your Parents
