General Manager- Nigeria Position General Manager based in Lagos for Nigeria The Role The General Manager for Nigeria oversees all aspects of the business operations at the location,  which include Marine Services and Cargo Services (freight forwarding, packing & removal & logistics), Liner services, Surveyors and Loss Adjustors, Government Services (GS) along with all other departments structured in the location. The primary purpose of this role is to be a direct representative capable of making sound decisions on behalf of COMPANY and its principals for the location by demonstrating exceptional commercial, administrative, public relations and technical expertise necessary to render quality services to all the customers across the business streams within the geographical location and also through optimal utilization of assets for inc reased profitability. The activities of the job holder will be geared towards maximizing productivity and increasing revenue generation through maintenance of existing accounts and converting new enquiries to additional business. The job holder provides direction and leadership to the Nigeria team ensuring that financial and operational performance is constantly improved upon in line with COMPANY Global strategies; managing partnership with principals and customers in order to maintain sustainable, long-term business relations. The job holder will also make suggestions/recommendations that could enhance or streamline operations,  will suggest new shipping-related activities for business growth, and will cooperate with the Regional HR function in the implantation of initiatives that would serve in motivating and developing the  workforce.

Principal Accountabilities

1. Strategic Planning Working with the VP ME& India Operations in defining the vision, strategyand direction for Nigeria to achieve its strategic objectives and toformulate functional plans, communicating the strategic plan to teams andallocating resources and educating resources in order to win newcontracts (new business) for the purpose of enhancing businessopportunities for Nigeria (including  GS) to include other areas inaddition to Liner Services and port operations.

2. OrganizationalLeadership

Directing, delegating and making decisions on allocating the resources ofthe COMPANY in Nigeria whose outcome becomes a plan to formulate

functional and divisional plans, including technology, marketing, etc., inorder to situate concretely where the organization wants to be in thefuture – particularly in terms of diversifying and broadening its market

Building commitment and maximising team performance by providingdirection, support and leadership for COMPANY staff on location.Inspiring them to achieve high standards of performance. Leadership mustbe exercised in a responsible manner and not in a manner contraryto company purpose. Sets a good example for others to follow andensures that the team are aware of the company’s vision, mission,goals, company strategy, culture, climate, company policies and treating

team members fairly and equitably.

Providing final approval and recommendation for any recruitment andselection activities for the Division. Responsible for strengthening,developing and training Managers in order to ensure qualifications aremet and aligned with the Regional initiatives.

3. BusinessDevelopment

Endeavouring the expansion of the scope of the business by sustainingexisting relationships and maintaining contacts with key personnel incontracting, operational and senior command.

Identifying new business opportunities for the location through contacts within the Shipping and Logistics business as well as military/naval andair bases in the Africa, to meet and discuss with the clients potentialsupport services that can be offered by the organization in variousstrategic locations.

Planning and guiding port operations during defense exhibitions tosupport marine naval operations. These business development

endeavours are ultimately aimed at maximizing opportunities forincreased revenue generation via increase in the number of port calls.

Performing competition analysis and commercial analysis thru

presentation of market and geography research combining internal data with external sources in line with the strategic initiatives of the Region soas to position the Company competitively and establish means ofsustaining market leadership.

4. Operational

Excellence

Acting as the PPOC for the US Navy Fleet in order to ensure that

inquiries and requirements are responded to in a timely and effectivemanner.

Monitoring and providing direction and guidance – on both micro andmacro levels – (a) Marine Services-the day-to-day vessel operations inport locations; interacting with principals, ship masters and ports inachieving a quick dispatch of vessel on a regular basis in order to ensuresmooth and operational excellence (OE) of COMPANY-Nigeriadiversified business through maximum and effective utilization of assetsand convert them into increased earnings.(b) Cargo Services-Identify and set guidelines to handle problem areas, effective

management of resources, ensure service delivery targets are met andreduce cost and maintain at acceptable level.

Monitoring and assessing uniformity and responsiveness of servicedelivery in the AOR in order to align operational activities with the itemsstipulated in the naval contracts.

Providing simplified version of the contracts via Disbursement WalkInstructive (DWI) and cascading this to operations teams in order toensure that the required standards and processes are complied leavingno room for misinterpretation or ambiguity.

5. Customer

RelationshipManagement

Communicating with clients regularly and promptly to advise them of thestatus of the activities and making our services available 24/7 in order toensure that they are well-informed and that their queries and concernsare channeled appropriately.

Managing customer feedbacks and complaints in a courteous, efficientand most professional manner in order to ensure that conflicts do notescalate, and that trust and confidence of the clients will be retained long-term.

Meeting or exceeding customers expectations by constantly ensuringthat service standards are always excellent in order to achieve the level

of customer satisfaction that the Stream desires.

Addressing grievances and resolving them thru the appropriate channeland forum and hence, meeting what is stipulated in the contracts andachieving customer loyalty.

6. Preparation andSubmission of

Reports

Providing input into annual and monthly business reports, competitionanalysis, regional port information and contact list in order to updateprogress and development of the Division to the VP ME & IndiaOperations.

7. Quality Assurance Works in close liaison with the Regional Manager for QA & Health,Safety,

Management Security and Environment (HSSE) by conducting periodically operationalquality audits in order to achieve 100% ISO compliance.

Managing the implementation of Regional QA objectives and proceduresin order to ensure QMS standards and best practices are successfullyadhered to in the Region in order to achieve near-zero tolerance onservices and ensuring customer complaints are redressed in time.

Coordinating concerned departments with the periodical audit conducted

internally and externally in order to achieve due diligence to the requiredstandards and processes for Nigeria.

8. Financial Control Ascertaining the financial aspect of the business is smoothly running inplace and competently managed by evaluating timeliness of client’spayment and internal treasury management is proportionate in order tomaintain a competitive financial standing for the Division. Evaluating thefinancial aspects of the business and ensuring that debt is closelymonitored and managed in accordance with COMPANY businesspolicies and procedures for debt control.

9. Communicationsand ConflictResolution

Carrying out issues relating to internal and external principals during thecourse of contract and providing suitable recommendations to achieve anagreeable end, considering conflict/variable areas (e.g. changes ingovernment regulations,  tariff, etc.) by supporting the message to beconveyed through proof in order to substantiate claims.

10. Training andDevelopment

Strengthening teams across locations within the Region by conductingtraining programmes (which specifically include Regional HR InductionProgramme) that  will equip employees with the required knowledge, skillsand awareness of the port agency business in order to achieve a highlevel of service standards and consistency in the delivery of services.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidates will hold a bachelor’s degree and / or with a minimum of ten (10) years ofprogressive experience in a naval environment or logistics industry; five (5) of which in a seniormanagement role. A good performance record is a must combined with effective communication skillsand imbedded awareness of Africa shipping, port operations, break bulk and liner market. Have soundbusiness acumen, strong people management, customer service skills and knowledge of MS-Officeapplications.
