EHello thereI am writing this with less than a week until we welcome over a hundred guests to our ‘Through the Decades’ JCI Sheffield Annual Dinner on Sat 12th September. I can’t quite believe this date is almost here after months of eager anticipation! I am also excited that we will be hosting the JCI UK National Council Meeting and Annual General Meeting in Sheffield on the same day. As a membership organisation, this is where local Presidents and their Deputy Presidents vote on important matters and issues on behalf of our members.

The national JCI UK AGM is particularly significant for me this year too as I am one of the candidates standing for election for the role of 2016 Deputy National President that will lead to becoming 2017 National President. I understand it has been several years since there has been an election for this post and it is important that members carefully read both intention to stand documents and then contact their Local President and tell them who they think their chamber should be supporting based on who they think makes the best fit for this role.

As well as campaigning over recent weeks, my usual President duties have of course continued. I have been pleased to start volunteering on our digital champions project with Age UK Sheffield and have already taught several older people how to search on the internet, how to set up email and how to use Facebook. I delivered a presentation to the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Council Meeting about the role of JCI and the opportunities we offer for young professionals. Deputy President Gareth and I were part of the training team at the national leadership academy as were former Presidents Kate and Dan Senter and I was delighted to see 5 sheffield members graduate from the academy.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our annual dinner on the 12th September. If you’ve not yet booked, you really won’t want to miss it. To book your ticket, please visit the events diary on our website.

Best wishes,

Mark Smith2015 PresidentJCI [email protected]

Five Weirs WalkThe JCI Sheffield Legacy

Do you fancy a challenge that will have an impact on four different charities?

Next month, JCI Sheffield are taking on the Five Weirs Walk to raise money for their 4 chosen charities of the year RSPCA, Nothing But Nets, Age UK Sheffield and SAFE@LAST. The walk will take you on an enjoyable route through the steel city, taking in some of the best sights the city has to offer. There are Victorian buildings and scenes of the city’s industrial heyday: old schools, mills, factories, some contemporary sculptures and of course five weirs. You can’t find two parts of Sheffield further from each other. From the wild natural habitat where animals live to an industrial landscape that has shaped Sheffield into the city it was and now is.

The Five Weirs Walk is an 8km path from Sheffield City Centre to Meadowhall along the banks of the River Don. It connects to the Sheffield and Tinsley canal towpath, the Upper Don Walk, the riverside path to Rotherham and the Trans Pennine Trail. In the 1980’s JCI Sheffield (then known as Sheffield Junior Chamber of Commerce, SJCC) set up a major environmental initiative that has left a permanent legacy for the city was the River Don action Committee which led to the development of the Five Weirs Walk.

The Don had once driven Sheffield’s industrial boom, first as a source of power, later as a coolant and a conduit for waste. Its banks were lined with the forges and mills for which the city was renowned, and its waters ran thick with industrial effluent and sewage. By the 1980s, in a period of economic decline, reduced pollution was an unexpected dividend. Water quality improved, and there were hopeful signs of wildlife returning to the river. But much of the riverside was still occupied by semi- derelictindustrial property, and the Don itself was largely invisible and inaccessible.

The goal of the Five Weirs Walk Trust was a restored, accessible river that the people of Sheffield could discover and enjoy.

They had excellent connections, which enabled two important local organisations to be brought on board at the outset. These were the Sheffield Junior Chamber of Commerce, whose members had already been organising voluntary clean-ups of the river, and which gave the Trust access to the local business community; and the Sheffield City Wildlife Group, later to become the Sheffield Wildlife Trust, which brought environmental expertise and “green” credentials.

Join us on this historic walk that is part of our chambers vast histroy. It will be a fun way to meet people from other chambers and not too demanding. Once you’ve completed the challenge, you will see a traditional Sheffield pub in the best ale hub in Yorkshire - Kelham island.

Tickets are £10 which includes a donation to charity and members are aslo welcome to get sponsored for doing the walk as well if they wish. To find out more contact [email protected]

Meet a Member Now that you’ve met the JCI Sheffield Council Team it’s time to start meeting our members! To start off we chat to Brogan O’Callaghan!

Name: Brogan O’Callaghan

How long have you been a member of JCI? Only since June of this year!

How did you find out about JCI?I previously worked with Mary-Kate, President of JCICork in Ireland, I saw all her Facebook posts and wanted to know more.

What are your hobbies? I love shopping and finding a bargain. I’m also an avid cinema goer. I’m a very sociable person and just like to spend time with friends and family.

Why JCI for you?I moved from Ireland to England in late 2013. Most of my closest friends are in other countries so I wanted to create some friends closer to home. I am also very career driven and the business education side of things is what really drew me in.

What has been your favourite event (So Far!) and why? My favourite event was my very first one – the Networking Training. Members of the Mayo JCI Team were there, and there was such a fun atmosphere. I learned so much and instantly felt involved and accepted. It was that event that sealed my membership!

Page 10: JCI Sheffield Steel City News September 2015

Tell us something crazy/dangerous/inspiring/unusual you have doneI suppose moving to Ireland and growing up there is something that makes me different. I have moved countries twice now, the most recent time I had to pack all of my possessions into my car then drive myself across Ireland then to Sheffield. My car only just survived the journey!

Most embarrassing moment: There are far too many to mention!

What is your occupation? I am the Sales Administrator at Wilson Field in Sheffield. Wilson Field specializes in Business Turnaround & Insolvency Solutions for both corporate and individual needs. I help co-ordinate the Sales Department by providing board reports, facts and figures, managing the Customer Relationship Management system (CRM) & data information and strategy implementation for the department. I also assist the National Sales Director. Anything that needs doing within the Sales Department I will help out with! It’s a great company to work for.

Has JCI had any impact on your job/career/profession/business?I feel that now my managers and directors know I am involved with JCI and I have attended events such as the Networking Training and the Business Tour of Numill they can see that I am really serious about my role and my career. I have become more confident and know I have a good network of people I can go to for advice.

Claim to Fame? Not a claim so much but I have met Ami James from Miami Ink, definitely the best celeb I have met!

Would you recommend JCI membership to your friends? Definitely! The friends I have got and the things I have learned will stay with me for a long time and I’ve not even been a member for 6 months yet!

Oven Gloves Ready!

Fancy yourself as the next Paul Hollywood or Mary Berry? Or maybe even your Sheffield’s next Howard Middleton then the JCI Bake Off needs you! We are looking for bakers who are up for baking delightful goodies! On the 19th of September we will be at The Moor Market Sheffield from 9am selling your baked goodies to the people of Sheffield!

The aim of the event is to simply to raise money for Age UK Sheffield and talk to people about the great work they do! Age UK Sheffield as you may know support people over the age of 50 years old in our societies who may be vulnerable. The Charity provide somewhere for them to meet friends and have a natter, but they also provide a range of other services including IT classes giving service users new skills, they also offer free legal advice, tax help, and also helping those may be experiencing one of the many forms of abuse.

What we want from our bakers is simply 24 biscuits, same flavour, size and shape and ideally go brilliantly with a brew. We also want to sell cakes but these won’t be judged. You aren’t required to be present on the day but you will be responsible for delivering your goodies on the morning of 19th.

Junior Chamber Celebrates 100th Birthday by Investing in Others

A local not-for-profit is investing in other voluntary, community and charitable causes by offering up to £500 to help make a positive impact on 100 lives as they celebrate their 100th anniversary.

Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sheffield have been raising funds over the last few years to further support Sheffield organisations. The chamber, which has been established in Sheffield for 88 years, currently works in partnership with good causes AGE UK, RSPCA Sheffield and SAFE@LAST, providing development and training opportunities in addition to fundraising initiatives.

This year, the global organisation celebrates 100 years since the JCI movement was founded internationally and JCI Sheffield have seized this as an opportunity to help other not-for-profit organisations. Mark Smith, 2015 Local President and currently the most outstanding JCI member in the world award winner says:

“JCI is all about providing development opportunities that empower young people to create pos-itive change. This year, our chamber has really tried to help create a positive impact locally by working closely with different organisations.”

“As its our 100th anniversary since the JCI movement started, we have decided to offer local voluntary and community groups or charities the chance to apply to our small grant scheme for £100 or up to £500 in return for them making a positive impact on at least 100 people.”

JCI Sheffield is offering two different grants, a gold and a platinum. Groups are required to fill in an application form and for those applying for the platinum grant will be invited to attend a ‘Dragons Den’ pitch.

Mark continues:

“We would love to hear from as many organisations as possible, what’s more is that you don’t have to be a registered charity to apply and its a great opportunity to work together to make an impact and ‘to be the change’, our theme locally in 2015.”

If you would like to find more about the small grants program, please visit: www.jcisheffield.org.uk/blog or contact [email protected]

Mr Vice PresidentNikola CvetkovicWhat is your name and role in JCI?I am Nikola Cvetković, currently serving as a JCI Vice President assigned to Europe, responsible for UK, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. I’m a member of JCI Local Chamber JCI Belgrade and part of the National Organisation JCI Serbia.

When did you join JCI and what made you join?I joined JCI in 2010 and at that time I was still a college student.Upon the invite of my friend who used to be my team leader in AIESEC, I joined JCI.The reason I joined is because most of the members of the local chapter at that time were great people and recognized professionals which I saw as a great opportunity for networking, but also to learn and grow through trainings and projects conducted together with these people.

Tell us about what the role of Vice President entails and specifically what have you been up to in your role? The main responsibilities of a Vice President are:• Act as a member of Board of Directors (BOD). • At least twice a year all the BOD members meet to discuss the strategic actions the organization

should take. Here we serve as voice of the members and use our best judgement to point the organization and HQ stuff working full time, in the right direction

• Visit and work with assigned National Organizations• Communicate directly with National President of assigned countries• Making sure they have all the relevant information regarding any JCI matters happening

Globally or in Europe.• Serving as the main point of contact for any questions, concerns or ideas• Visit each of the assigned countries at least once throughout the year• The goal of the visit is to try to create the most impact with the knowledge and experience a

VP possesses.• Depending on the country, each one has it’s own challenges that need to be addressed.

Therefor in different countries VP’s do different things, for example:• delivers a specific training to help members develop specific skills• meets with local stakeholders to help strengthen the existing or form new partnerships• works directly on certain workshops with local or national boards to help them overcome

challenges and be better• meet and talk with members, so they get the feeling how awesome JCI really is internationally

as well :) • The job is demanding and takes a lot free time, due to excessive travel, but on the other hand

it’s rewarding and inspiring!

What do you do in your day job for work?I’m a Co-founder, working as a Strategy and Partnerships Director of a Digital Creative Agency called Neopix (http://neopix.rs). We’re passionate about creating web, mobile and digital products that make us proud. We create beautiful stuff that just works. :). We’re now broadening our network of Partnering IT/Design companies we work for as subcontractors, as well as developing a referral and sales network outside our country, so if anyone sees a potential business opportunity for collaboration, feel free to reach out. JCI has a lot of benefits and network of trusted people from different industries is surely one. Use it. ;)

Page 17: JCI Sheffield Steel City News September 2015

How has JCI helped you? What have you got out of it?JCI has helped me learn and grow as a person and as a professional. There are two main things I’m thankful for:

1. A JCI friend helped me start my company by referring me to my first big customer. A good word from a JCI friend was enough to set a solid foundation to make a deal. Now, a bit more then a year later, we have 13 employees. In the meantime that first client received a significant investment for further development of the initial product we created.2. Before JCI I used to work and lead a couple of different student organizations. There I had a chance to work with students who are easy to mould and motivate. In JCI I have to work with people who are 25-40, who all already have a formed personalities, values and attitudes, while also have many other priorities that are competing with JCI time. Working with all these people has been a very interesting, intense and sometime even stressful experience, but handling all the situations, people behavior and organizational challenges has made a better, more capable and confident person.

What do you like most about JCI and why?The thing I like the most about JCI are the people. Locally those are the people I enjoy spending my free time with. We help each other out, work together to create an impact in our community and have fun together (for example we went Rafting together just last week). Besides from the local people there’s a bunch of people on a National or International level that I love so much and that although we don’t see each other that often, once we do, it’s like we’ve never been taken apart. The worldwide network of friends and friendly, open people willing to act to make a change is the thing I like the most in JCI.

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing JCI now and in the coming years and how do you think we can overcome these? In my opinion, the biggest threat, but also an opportunity is the new age digital technology and communication. We live in a daily changing and evolving world, where High Tech has become an integral part of our everyday lives. Many different things now compete for the time of our member and we have to make sure that we, as an organization are delivering enough value for the time our members invest. The Time investment members are willing to make nowadays is much shorter that in the past, so we have make sure that are message is clear, meetings productive and inspiring and our impact measurable and heard in the media and social discussions. We need to clarify our message and make sure we deliver it in the best possible way, on multiple platforms.

This year World President Ismail’s theme is ‘commit, connect, care’. What does that mean for you and how have you been able to deliver on this in your role?I look at this as follows:

• Commit - In order to do something extraordinary it takes hard work, dedication and persistency. “No retreat, no surrender, to Victory!” :)

• Connect - We can’t do everything alone. “You can do anything, but not everything”. We need to unite all sectors of society (civil, government & businesses) to work together towards the mutual goal. We also need to work together more closely within our organization (local, national, internationally) and try to optimize our resources, use each others knowledge and experience to learn and progress faster in order to maximize the impact.

• Care - We’re all in JCI because we want to create a positive impact, we care. The only way to be truly passionate is to love what you do and see the impact you’re creating.

Page 18: JCI Sheffield Steel City News September 2015

As part of your role as Vice President, you are assigned to the UK. Where have you visited in the UK and whats your favourite part so far?Within the UK, so far I have visited only Scotland (if it counts :), which I loved. Beautiful countryside, hilarious people (not just Stan :).

I will be coming to JCI UK National Conference in November, to Barnsley. I’m super excited to meet and spend some time with all the JCI UK members. If we manage to find a suitable time to visit even before the World Congress in Kanazawa, I would love to come even sooner.

What advice would you give to members who might consider standing for an international role in JCI?Go for it. It’s a great life experience, very different from all the roles you might have had serving locally or nationally. It’s time and energy demanding, but inspiring, great for worldwide networking and personal development. The most important thing is that you get a chance to create an impact and change people’s lives.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?Feel free to drop me a line with your thoughts on my answers to these questions at [email protected]

Thanks

@JCIYorkshire

2015 is a historic year for JCI. Not only are we celebrating 100 years of the JCI Movement but we are also seeing the retrun of the JCI Yorkshire Conference! It’s a great way to show your Yorkshire pride, celebrate our history with other members and Senators and have fun in true JCI style. We caught up with 2015 Regional Group Chairman (RGC) Charlie Pearson to tell us more!

“In 2015 JCI Yorkshire celebrates 60 years United. To celebrate we have brought back the Yorkshire Conference. Throughout the day members and Senators will be coming together to celebrate everything Yorkshire and chambers’ will be taking each other on in some great competitions. Debating, Bake Off’s and sports games to name a few. The event will be topped off with the Annual Awards Gala Dinner.

We will also be having some fun watching show debates from Senators and past RGCs. Which will hopefully allow members to pick up some tips ahead of the Regional competition.

Throughout the day we will also be supporting the MS trust and celebrating what we as a region have achieved for the charity during 2015.

The Regional awards dinner is always the highlight of the Regional calendar and now we have a whole day! So every member and Senator is welcome to come and join us in Rotherham on 17th October.”

Hello! Having heard wonderful things about LEAP from previous delegates and trainers, I thought I’d take the LEAP (Sorry Pun intended!) It was held at BPP and we stayed at the Holiday Inn. The weekend was focused on a variety of subjects but centered around leadership and equipping us to lead and not just in what flat fashion but in our own way. The course kicked off with basics of personality profiling using Insight. The second day was intense but in a really good way! There were a lot of activities and a lot energy in the courses with informative training. The Academy continually challenges you and makes you think about others and how to get the best out of them. It also teaches you how to work with others when it’s also not quite going so well. The Academy brings together a range of JCI members not just from the UK but also other from around Europe! So it’s a great way to make new friends, share ideas and share in the passion of learning and continually evolving yourself. I met some wonderful people last weekend and enhanced friendships with others I already knew. What have I learned this weekend? That I’m a totally different person to whom I thought I was and that in some ways I’m ready to lead and I’ve found my style. I’ve also found the skills to communicate better with different personality types.

LEAP has taught me a lot and cannot speak more highly of the high quality training I got. It was an unforgettable weekend and one that I hope more people will enjoy in the future. I also hope to be part of it in future and help pass on the new skills I’ve learnt. Neal StirkJCI Sheffield Community Action Director 2015

LEAP is one of the best JCI UK academies that members can attend and we caught up with some of the delegates to find out how they found it!

Page 24: JCI Sheffield Steel City News September 2015

#ImpactJCI

I had heard many positive things about the JCI LEAP program and how it inspired people to make a difference. I was not left disappointed. The training in Birmingham was fantastic from the venue down to the trainers and attendee members who all contributed to making the weekend enjoyable and insightful.

The training was a great mix of seminar, practical and group work, which challenged us late into the night. Without giving too much away about the content of the weekend, the LEAP experience helped me to reflect on my own character traits and understand how I can grow as a leader in the workplace and in life. It was not all work and no play however. LEAP enabled me to socialize and network with people across the country and also from my local JCI Sheffield chamber whom I had never previously met.

I would like to thank everyone for making LEAP an amazing weekend. I would definitely recommend this training to anyone who wants to understand more about themselves and their own capabilities.

Oliver Bell, JCI Sheffield member

Wow! What a weekend! If you want to understand yourself more, how you work with others and push yourself then leap academy is certainly the place for you.

Not only has it made me think about how I can work with others more effectively but it’s made me more conscious of how to deal effectively with most situations!

The organisation behind the weekend was fab- it was energetic, fun and interactive throughout and it was a great opportunity to meet like minded professionals.

I would recommend leap academy to anyone! :)
