The seven-time world chess champion was today sharing his thoughts on possible mutual cooperation between the international organisations he represents and JCI.

He actively participates in several organisations focusing on environment and helping children, and he sees similarities between his programs and JCI – both are about meeting people and making friends, among others. He proposed to exchange information on his and JCI programs to understand each other better and to be able to find ways for cooperation. According to Karpov, “chess can help people develop characteristics and qualities important to life, it is not always about world champions.” Chess also helps develop strategy, logic and memory and teaches how to make a decision. JCI European ConferenceJune 1-4, 2011 • Tarragona Catalonia

The magnificent show started with a presentation of our specially invited guests, the chief delegates from the areas outside Europe. The National Presidents from all JCI countries in Europe were presented one by one on the stage, followed by the JCI Past World Presidents, JCI Vice Presidents assigned to Europe, JCI Executive Committee, JCI Executive Vice President and JCI World President Kentaro Harada.

The place of the opening ceremony was also excellent, with views on a Roman wall and sunlight going through the open space of the Auditorium.

The traditional dancers (bastoners) impressed us with their dresses

wooden sticks. Then we listened to the tones of the national anthem of Catalonia.

The Ceremony was also attended by Mr Josep Felix Ballesteros, Major of Tarragona, Enric Colet, Secretary General of Enterprise and Employment in Generalitat of Catalunya and Anatoly Karpov, the chess world champion.

At the end we witnessed building of the human towers (castellers), the UNESCO human heritage, that can be up to 10 levels high. Four teams showed us the strength, balance and courage that is needed for this activity that has been a tradition for centuries.
