DoublesThe success story of the 1996 nationaltournament for JCCC was the team ofBorn and Rebekah Wheeler. The duoreached the quarterfinals, making themthe second team in the program’s histo-ry to advance as deep in the tourna-ment. They finished the year at 14-6,tying the school record for wins by adouble team at the No. 2 position.

1997TeamJohnson County posted its second high-est national finish in school history,placing 10th at the NJCAA’s Division IIChampionship in Tucson, Ariz.

SinglesFreshman Julie Bryan became the firstsingles player at JCCC to advance tothe semifinals in a national champi-onship tournament. Bryan, playing atthe No. 6 position, won her first threematches, setting up her bid to reach thefinals. Bryan finished the year with arecord of 15-2 and a winning percentage of .882,both new school records. FreshmanSunshyne Bailey also provided pointsfor JCCC, winning her first-roundmatch.

DoublesJCCC’s No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Rebekah Wheeler andMeghann Westhoff became the firstteam to reach the semifinals. Wheeleralso became the first JCCC player toreach the quarterfinals or better in bothyears of competition. The pair finishedthe year at 17-2, shattering schoolrecords for wins and winning percent-age at the No. 3 position. Their 17wins are also the most by any doublesteam in school history.

1998TeamThe previous two seasons, the JohnsonCounty women’s team had dominatedthe Region VI Championships, win-ning 15 of the 18 singles and doublestitles. While the team’s dominanceslipped slightly in 1998, the LadyCavaliers did extend their NJCAANational Tournament streak to fourstraight appearances. Johnson Countymade the most of its opportunity, plac-ing 11th overall.

SinglesSophomore Ashley Snipes and freshman Jami King each won two sin-gles matches before falling in the quar-terfinals. Sophomore Sunshyne Baileyand freshman Megan Gross each werevictorious in one match.

DoublesAll three doubles teams won at least onematch at the 1998 NationalChampionships, with the duo ofSunshyne Bailey and Jami King win-ning two. They finished the season atNo. 2 doubles with a 14-4 record, tyingthe school mark for wins in a season.

1999TeamThe Lady Cavaliers peaked at the righttime, narrowly losing to the Region VItitle. But they saved their best effort atnationals, placing third, the highest fin-ish ever. It also marked the program’ssecond top-10 finish in three years.

“This is definitely the best feeling thisprogram’s had since I’ve been here,”Moser said. “This year there were nogreat teams, but many good teams. Inprevious years, usually two teams dom-inated, but this year the tournamentwas very close, so we thought if weplayed to our capabilities, a top-five fin-ish was within reach. The real key forus was the first two rounds.”

Wallace State won the team title with28 points. Chattanooga State was sec-ond with 25, followed by JCCC with23. Central Florida and Collin Countyround out the top five, finishing with22 and 21 points respectively.

SinglesSophomore Jami King became the firstAll-American and national champion ofthe women’s tennis program, as shedominated the No. 2 singles bracket atthe NJCAA Division II TennisChampionships in Tucson, Ariz. Shelater became the first two-time All-American, reaching the finals withfreshman teammate Julia Ball at No. 2doubles. Their performances helpedJCCC to a third-place team finish, thehighest in school history. There were23 teams in the field.

After a bye in the first round, King, theseventh seed, opened the championshipwith a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cara Mince ofGlen Oaks. She then followed byknocking off the No. 2, No. 3 and No.4 seeds consecutively, and all in straightsets, to win a national championship.

“Her foot speed and her heart got herthat championship,” Moser said. “Shewas the talk of the tournament. Sheknocked off three top seeds without los-ing a set. She was amazing.”

King finished the year with a 15-4record, which ties the school recordwins at No. 2 singles. She finishes herJCCC tennis career with a singles markof 25-8. Her 25 wins are the fourthhighest total at JCCC.

In addition to King’s dominate effort,the Lady Cavaliers were solid from topto bottom, reaching the quarterfinals inall six tournament brackets.Sophomore Margaret Clark (Olathe

North) advanced to the semifinals atNo. 6 singles, defeating two top seedsbefore falling to the eventual nationalchampion. Freshman Sydney Moshierof Salina nearly reached the semifinals,taking top seed Ann Harple to threesets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-7.

DoublesIn doubles play, King and Ball wereseeded No. 2 and they lived up to theirhigh seed, reaching the finals, only tofall in the championship, 1-6, 6-7, tothe third-seeded team of Leslie Gordonand Kim McCravy of Wallace State.Both King and Ball earned second-teamAll-America honors.

The No. 1 team of Moshier and fresh-man Emily Danielson of Topeka playedimpressively, reaching the quarterfinals.

2000TeamJohnson County qualified for theNJCAA National Tournament for a sev-enth straight season and finished in thetop 10 for a fourth straight year.

SinglesFour of JCCC’s five singles participantswon a match in the tournament. EmilyDanielson at No.1, Sydney Moshier atNo. 2, Amy de Blonk at No. 3 andKende Rothaus at No. 6, each finished1-1 in the tournament. Moshier and deBlonk were region champions.

DoublesBoth Johnson County doubles teamswon two matches before falling in thequarterfinal round of the 2000 NationalChampionships. The duo of EmilyDanielson and Sydney Moshier at No.1 finished 2-1 in the tournament, and11-8 overall. Amy de Blonk and KristaKuban also went 2-1 and ended the sea-son 13-7. Their 13 wins tie the fourthbest season mark in Johnson Countyhistory at No. 2 doubles.

2001TeamJohnson County qualified for theNJCAA National Tournament for aneighth straight season and finished inthe top 10 for a fifth straight year.JCCC entered the national tournamenton the heels of one of its most domi-nating performances in school history.JCCC won the Region VI title by win-ning eight of the nine championshipbrackets. That momentum carried overto nationals, as JCCC placed fourth, itssecond highest national finish in pro-gram history.

SinglesFor just the second time in JCCCwomen’s tennis history, a JohnsonCounty player was crowned nationalchampion. Sophomore Krista Kubanbecame the program’s second nationalchampion in singles, downed AmandinBorgazzi of Kilgore College in the

finals, 6-2, 6-4 to win the No. 5 singlesbracket. Seeded No. 7, Kuban knockedoff No. 1 seed Stephanie Floyd offWallace State in the quarterfinals, 6-2,6-2. She followed by downing No. 3seed Amanda Miller of Central Florida,7-6, 6-0 to reach the finals. Borgazziwas the fifth seed. Kuban did not lose aset the entire tournament.

“Krista was amazing” said head coachGlen Moser. “She was in a zone and sheknocked off three top seeds without los-ing a set.”

But she wasn’t’’t the lone JCCC All-American. Sophomore Jessica deBlonk,the No. 2 seed in the No.2 singlesbracket, reached the finals against No. 3seed Maria Arcos of Collin County.deBlonk won the first set handily 6-2,however, Arcos came back to win thenext two sets, 3-6, 1-6, endingdeBlonk’s run for a national title. Herrunner-up finish did earn her NJCAAAll-American honors.

Freshman Ashleigh Dexter nearlyreached the finals in the No. 6 singlesbracket. Dexter had the lead in hersemifinal match, before falling.Sophomore Amy deBlonk also lost hersemifinal match at the No. 3 singlesbracket, falling short in her bid to be atwo-time All-American.

DoublesIn doubles player, Jessica deBlonk andher sister Amy, teamed together at No.1 doubles to earn All-American honors.The pair finished second, losing in thefinals to the No. 1 team from CentralFlorida, 3-6, 1-6. Jessica deBlonkbecame just the second player to earntwo All-American honors in one cham-pionship.

2002TeamJohnson County qualified for theNJCAA National Tournament for anninth straight season and finished inthe top 10 for a sixth straight year.JCCC placed fourth for a secondstraight year, matching its second high-est national finish in program history.Overall, JCCC head coach Glen Moserwas pleased with his team’s effort. “Wewent in ranked fifth nationally, and weimproved on that finish,” Moser said.“We competed very well.

SinglesIn singles play, four of JCCC’s six play-ers reached the semifinals; SarahBowman at No. 2, freshman LaurenOakleaf at No. 3, Julia Danielson at No.4 and sophomore Ashleigh Dexter atNo. 6. Bowman, Danielson and Dextertook their matches to the final setbefore falling.

Johnson County

At Nationalsthe fourth player in the program’s histo-ry to reach the quarterfinals. Heopened with an upset win of MonteCalderon of San Jacinto, the tourna-ment’s eighth-seeded player, 7-6, 6-4.He followed with a hard-fought three-set victory over Barnie Bacoum (Hinds)6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Chamberlain was elimi-nated from the tournament by thefourth-seed Herve Rousseau ofMidland, 6-1, 6-2. Acosta opened withan impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over KeithSerwatka of Mitchell, however, DonVan Ramshorst of McLennan, thethird-seeded player, returned the favor6-2, 6-0. The remaining JCCC partic-ipants each suffered early exits.

DoublesFor only the second time in the program’s history, two JCCC doublesteams posted a win in a national tour-nament. Todd Perkins and Doug Owenopened with a 6-4, 6-4 victory overCantonville in the No. 2 bracket.Chamberlain and Grant Allen easily disposed of Brainard’s duo, 6-1, 6-0before falling by the same score in thesecond round. Chamberlain becamejust the second Cavalier to win at leastone match in both singles and doublesin the same national tournament.

1988TeamJohnson County qualified for its sixthconsecutive appearance at the NJCAA,but it would be the team’s last at theDivision I level. JCCC switched toDivision II in 1989. In a final D-Iappearance, the Cavaliers posted theirsecond highest finish, placing 15ththanks to a strong performance in thesingles championship.

SinglesFour players posted wins in the respec-tive tournament brackets, the most inthe program’s history. WillieAlumbaugh, JCCC’s No. 1 player, ledthe way by reaching the quarterfinalsbefore losing to the tournament’seighth-seeded player. After receiving abye, Alumbaugh defeated JuanMarvelandra of Dean, 6-4, 6-3, whichadvanced him to the quarterfinals. Helost that match 6-1, 6-0 to Aldo Burgaof Indian Rivers. Chris McAbee, O.J.Allen and Rick Allen each won theirfirst-round matches before exiting thetournament in the second round.

DoublesFor just the second time, all threeJCCC doubles teams were ousted in thefirst round of play.

1989TeamJohnson County jumped to theDivision II national tournament and itproved beneficial, as the Cavaliers fin-ished as the country’s third best team.

SinglesThree Cavaliers reached the finals in singles: Alex Diaz (No. 4), Rick Allen

(No. 5) and Ben Bergsten (No. 6).Allen and Bergsten became the firstCavaliers to win an NJCAA title, aseach swept through the tournament.All three were honored as NJCAA All-Americans.

DoublesRick Allen pulled double duty as he andhis partner Scott Jurgensmeier flewthrough the No. 3 doubles bracket togive JCCC its first doubles nationalchampionship. Allen is the only playerin the program’s history to own both asingles and doubles national champi-onship.

1990TeamThe Cavaliers notched a top-five spotfor the second time in as many years,placing fifth at the Division II nationaltournament in Tyler, Texas.

SinglesBen Bergsten became the program’s firsttwo-time singles all-American, reachingthe semifinals at the No. 2 position. Hewas the national champion at No. 6 ayear earlier.

DoublesThe Cavaliers No. 2 team of ChrisMcAbee and Chris Tucker garnered All-America honors, reaching the semifinalsin their respective tournament bracket.

1991TeamThe Cavaliers extended its string of consecutive national tournamentappearances to nine years by finishingrunner-up at the Region VI champi-onship. At the national tournament inTyler, Texas, the Cavaliers posted a thirdstraight top-10 national finish, placingseventh.

DoublesFor the third straight year a JCCC dou-bles team reached the semifinals, how-ever, this would be the first No. 1 duoto accomplish that feat. Dan Heck andSteve Nash were honored as All-Americans with their strong nationalshowing.

1991TeamThe Johnson County team matched itsbest national tournament finish, placingthird behind national champion CollinCounty and Vincennes. JCCC also produced five NJCAA Division II All-Americans at the championship.“That’s a hard feat to accomplish at thenational tournament,” Moser said.“The team kept working harder as theyear went and they peaked at the righttime.”

SinglesSteve Nash and Dustin Nelson earnedAll-America status by reaching thefinals in their respective tournamentbrackets. All-American honors werealso awarded to Didier Combe andKevin Kowalik, as each reached thesemifinals in their brackets.

DoublesSteve Nash and Trini Ooi became justthe second Cavalier duo to reach theNJCAA finals under Moser. The pairwere honored as second-team All-Americans. Nash closed the book on anoutstanding career at JCCC. Hebecame the program’s first three-timeAll-American, first two-time doublesall-American and the second player togarner all-American status in both sin-gles and doubles within the same tour-nament. Also earning All-Americanstatus was the No. 3 team of DidierCombe and Kevin Kowalik. The pairearned honorable mention honors byreaching the semifinals. Coupled withsingles All-America honors, Combe andKowalik became the third and fourthCavaliers to earn elite status in both sin-gles and doubles.

1992TeamAlthough Johnson County could notduplicate the success of the 1992 team,the 1993 squad proved it was one of thebetter teams in JCCC’s tennis history.Paced by Didier Combe in singles andthe duo of Vidrine and Cezus in dou-bles play, the Cavaliers finished as thesixth-best team in NJCAA Division II.

Singles

Didier Combe became only the thirdCavalier to earn All-American status attwo different national tournaments.Combe matched his 1992 performance,reaching the semifinals, but this year hedid it at the No. 3 position. He alsoclosed out his tennis career as only thesecond player at JCCC to garner All-America honors three times.

DoublesThe Cavaliers No. 3 duo of Steve Cezusand Drake Vidrine earned honorable mention All-America honors by reach-ing the semifinal round at the nationaltournament in Corpus Christi, Texas.

1993TeamThe Johnson County men’s team wason a roll the first day of the NJCAADivision II national tournament inCorpus Christi, Texas, winning firstround matches in all nine brackets.That left the Cavaliers alone in firstplace. However, the team stumbled alittle on the final day, finished sixth forthe second consecutive year.

SinglesFive of Johnson County six competitorsreached the quarterfinals. SophomoreKhaled Elsawi, Moser’s No. 1 playerfrom Cairo, Egypt, was the Cavaliers’top performer, making it to the semifi-nals before getting ousted. By reachingthe semifinals, Elsawi became theeighth singles player in the program’shistory to earn All-America status. Healso set an all-time record at JCCC forwins at his position with a 21-2 record.Reaching the quarterfinals were AndyUrias at No. 2, Steve Williams at No. 3,Eric Kwait at No. 4 and Drake Vidrineat No. 5.

DoublesAll three doubles team posted firstround victories but only the No. 3 dou-bles team of Matt Anderson and EricKwait reached the quarterfinals.

1995TeamMany questions faced the 1995Cavaliers as they began the season.Most notably: would they be able toextend the streak of consecutiveNJCAA tournament appearances to 13straight? The Cavaliers not only metthat challenge, but also finished amongthe county’s top 15 programs. At theNJCAAs, Johnson County gave avaliant effort but finished 13th overall,marking the first time in seven years ofcompeting at the Division II champi-onship they had not finished among thetop 10 teams.

SinglesFour Johnson County singles playersopened the 1995 national tournamentwith a victory. Mike Murphy at No. 1,Jarrod Eyler at No. 2, Choo Lee at No.4 and Marc Hedstrom at No. 5 were theCavaliers first-round winners. Murphyupset the tournament ninth seed for his
