WEDNESDAYSTae Kwon DoTae Kwon Do is the popular Korean martial art known for its dynamic kicking techniques. Kids learn skills and techniques in a safe, fun environment. The skills taught are progressive with built-in incentives for students to achieve success and maximize potential.
• Beginner students are introduced to a combination of kicking and punching techniques, self-defense and forms. The training also includes mental skills that improve memorization.
• Intermediate to Advanced students are challenged with more complicated mental and physical skills, including advanced forms,
self-defense techniques and the study of musculoskeletal systems and the history of martial arts.
• Advanced students prepare for demonstrations and competitions, including advanced self-defense techniques, forms and weapons training (Bo Staff, Kamas and Nunchuks).
A uniform can be purchased from the instructor and is mandatory for testing purposes.

Marco Ferraresso hops on the J Adventure bus every day after school for fun afternoons on the Hill. His favorite classes are Swimming and J Jump. J AdventureJ Adventure is the North Shore’s most trusted and enriching after-school program. We pick up students in grades K-8 at local schools and bring them back to the Hill for afternoons of play, movement and learning.
We partner with Cohen Hillel Academy to offer exciting classes, including Swimming, Tae Kwon Do, Art, Tennis, Drama, Mathletes, Homework Club and more.
We have extended care hours until 6:00pm Monday through Friday. We run school vacation camps and offer coverage for early release days, too!

Aquatics at the J
Parent and Tot Swim This is the exciting first dip into the pool for children and we make it special for everyone involved! Parents bring their children (ages 6 months - 3 years) into the pool for a fun lesson with one of our wonderful instructors. Sing songs, dance in the water and more. Swim diapers are required.
Starfish: Level 1Your children will learn to love the water while being taught basic swimming skills. Our Starfish class is a safe and positive introduction to swimming. Children will be introduced to skills, including blowing bubbles, floating and kicking.
Seahorse: Level 2Ready for the next level! Children learn important skills, such as beginner front and back crawl, floating, glides (prone and supine), seated dives and treading water.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 1 or children must be able to easily enter the water and be comfortable participating in small groups.
Combo Starfish and SeahorseThis convenient option is for families who want a Level 1 or Level 2 class, but can’t make the scheduled times. Children learn skills from Starfish and Seahorse classes, including submerging their faces, floating and elementary front crawl.
Barracuda: Level 3They are on the move! Students improve their front and back crawl by learning rotary breathing and body rotation. Breast stroke, underwater swimming, dolphin kick and diving will be introduced.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 2 or ability to float and swim independently on front and back for at least 10 yards.
Dolphin: Level 4Students improve their stroke technique and endurance in front and back crawl, breast stroke, elementary back stroke and treading. They refine their diving skills, too.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 3 or basic front crawl and back crawl for 15 yards. Children must be comfortable in deep water.
Sharks: Level 5Sharks learn to dive from our diving board! They also learn the butterfly and open and flip turns, while practicing the back crawl and breast stroke.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 4 or ability to easily swim the entire length of pool, exhibit good technique in front and back crawl and swim underwater 10 yards.
Advanced Swim: Level 6 Getting ready for Swim Team! These students take on all strokes at longer distances, increasing strength and endurance.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 5 and the ability to comfortably swim 50 yards of front and back crawl and breast stroke.

Create a Swim ClassOur classes fill quickly and we want to make sure your children have the chance to learn to swim! If you have at least three participants of a similar level, we will find you an instructor and place in the pool for lessons. These lessons are $13 per participant for JCC members and $15 per participant for non-members. Synchronized SwimmingYour kids will love this introduction to Synchronized Swimming, featuring dance and conditioning. Instructor Anya Kushkova is an award-winning coach for the national team of Ukraine.

Lifeguard Certification Course & ReviewGet certified, get a great job, have skills for life! Take advantage of these convenient life guard training courses at the JCC.
Prerequisites: You must be able to swim 300 yards Freestyle/Breaststroke without stopping, tread water for two minutes without hands, retrieve a brick from the bottom of the pool 7-10 ft. and deliver it to the shallow-end of the pool in 1:40. Must be at least 15 years of age to take the course; lifeguards must be 16 years old to be hired in the state of Massachusetts.

JCC Sea Serpent Swim TeamJoin the Sea Serpents! Kids love competitive swimming in our fun, supportive environment. We compete in both the JCC League and in USA Swimming. To be placed in the appropriate practice group, all swimmers must try out for the JCC Sea Serpents. Ages 6+.
Novice is designed as a fun introduction to the world of competitive swimming for our youngest swimmers, ages 6-9 years. Novices concentrate on the fundamentals, rules & regulations, technique and stroke development. Swimmers also learn proper lane etiquette and how to use a pace clock. This group requires a commitment of two, one-hour practices per week.

Goal setting and attaining high levels of competition are strongly encouraged at this level.
The USA training group is divided into three levels based upon swimming ability.
USA A requires a dedication to the sport, exceptional technique and the ability to swim 500 yards Freestyle in less than seven minutes.
USA B requires sound technique, work ethic and the ability to swim 200 yards Freestyle in less than three minutes.

TABATA STRENGTH AND CORE (INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED): Each Tabata set includes 20 seconds of strength training followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for a total of 4 minutes and finishes with 1 minute of rest. This workout is best for advanced exercisers who are comfortable with intense training. End your workout with 15 minutes of abdominal shredding exercises!
55+ ADULT CLASSESSENIOR STRENGTH AND BALANCE (ALL LEVELS): Get fit in this fun, energetic class that helps our seasoned members work on their balance by incorporating specific core (abdominal) exercises. Participants may sit during class.
FIT FOREVER STRENGTH (ALL LEVELS): Aging to perfection takes some work! Fit Forever Strength is an active class using hand weights, tubes, body bars, pilates circles, etc. with gentle exercises to help increase muscular strength, bone density, balance, flexibility, joint stability and range of motion. This class is designed at a slower pace for those coming off an injury, with mobility issues, seniors or those just starting to exercise.
FIT FOREVER CARDIO & STRENGTH (ALL LEVELS): Straight forward and fun! This class is easy-to-follow aerobics and senior specific muscle toning. This is an effective way to burn calories, strengthen muscles and improve balance!

We’re proud to be named Marblehead’s BEST Preschool this year by the Readers Choice Awards! Experience the JCC’s renowned Early Childhood Program.
Infant/Toddler Program offers care for children ages 2 months to 2 years and 9 months, from 7:30am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday, year-round. Your baby will grow with our nurturing caregivers who create an environment filled with wonder and curiosity. We encourage language development with daily reading and singing. Toddlers also enjoy Music & Movement classes as part of the weekly curriculum.
PrimeTime for Toddlers welcomes children 15 months to 2 years and 9 months, 8:30am-12:00pm, 2, 3 or 5 mornings a week, September through June. We offer a summer session, too!
Preschool welcomes children ages 2 years and 9 months to 5 years old. The program runs 8:30am-12:00pm, from September to June. Our experienced teachers and small class sizes set us apart. The classrooms are arranged in a series of learning centers that encourage both social interaction and independence. Gym and Music classes are part of the curriculum.
Masoret Program In addition to offering our strong Preschool curriculum, the Masoret Program features a special emphasis on Jewish culture and the Hebrew language. Masoret welcomes 4 and 5 year olds.
Transition is designed for the oldest 4 year olds who either miss the Kindergarten cut-off (5 years old by December 1st) or may benefit from one more year in a kindergarten readiness classroom. The children participate in work groups, introducing them to concepts and activities that they will see in kindergarten.
Preschool Enrichment Programs Every afternoon, our teachers bring children to these wonderful classes, including Swimming, Art, Tae Kwon Do, Sports, Science and more. These classes are open to all preschoolers.
Preschool Plus For families who would like additional care, Preschool Plus runs from 12:00pm-6:00pm daily. We also offer Early Drop-Off 7:30am-8:30am.
If you’re looking for after-school care for your older children, be sure to check out our popular program J Adventure, which welcomes students in K - 8th grade! See pg. 7.
For the Urman family, the JCC Early Childhood program is like a second home. “I grew up going to the JCC and it’s a wonderful place,” says Kate Urman who now sends her children Shelby, 1, and JD, 5, to the J. “The teachers are fantastic and the kids are very happy. We feel lucky that our kids can grow up going to the J, too.
“Shelby talks about her teachers and friends, listing them by name all the time. When we drop her off she doesn’t look back. When we pick her up she is happy.
“JD is learning about recycling in school and is now recycling everything in sight at home! He loves his afternoon activities, too. He tells us about his experiments in Mad Scientists and is excited that he has a personal trainer in Fit Kids!”

The Importance of Reading to Your Child
Reading was always an important part of the nightly ritual in my house when my daughters were young. It started with Emily’s favorite book, Moo, Baa, La La La by Sandra Boynton and progressed to chapter books such as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. Regardless of the book, it was a special time for all of us.
There are many benefits of reading to your kids, including:
1. It’s a special bonding time with your child. Cuddle, talk and share quality time together.
2. Reading improves a child’s vocabulary and language skills. Your child will absorb new words and hear different sentence structures.
3. Books build a child’s imagination. Reading takes children to different places and introduces them to new characters.
4. Reading better prepares your child for academic excellence. Numerous studies show that children exposed to a lot of literature at a young age are more likely to do well in school. Also, reading is a part of all subjects and helps in overall mastery.
5. It’s a great form of entertainment! Reading can keep a child busy and does not take up much space. Also, it can be a great way to calm an active child.

The policy of the Jewish Community Center of the North Shore is that payment for services shall be made in advance of the receipt of those services unless in special cases other arrangements are made with the Executive Director or his/her designee.
In most cases, refunds are given only if the JCCNS cancels a program. Program credit may be offered in special circumstances.
