Section 2: Jackson Convention Complex Overview The Jackson Convention Complex located in Jackson, MS is “Where Jackson Meets the World.” The Jackson Convention Complex was built in two phases and is located in the heart of Downtown Jackson. Phase 1 which is formally known as the Mississippi TelCom Center, opened its doors in 2005 as a three (3) story, 74,000 square foot building, with Dock/Load-In located on the first floor and conference/meeting rooms with Gallery located on the second and additional meeting rooms with Theater on the third floors of the building. Phase 2 opened in 2009, and added a two (2) story, 256,000 square foot building, with Ballrooms, Boardrooms, Exhibit Halls, Meeting Rooms, Pre-function/Lobby Space located on the first floor, a Pre-function Space with additional Meeting Rooms on the second floor and an open patio which will serve as the walkway to future Convention Hotel on the second floor of the building.

Section 4: Internship Program Overview General Overview of Program SMG is responsible for the programming, event management, marketing, sponsorship and facility operations at the Jackson Convention Complex, as well as business planning and development for future growth of the complex. With SMG, the Intern environment of the Jackson Convention Complex provides the perfect laboratory for students in all aspects of hospitality receive an integrated learning and working experience. No other location within the state provides the diversity and magnitude of possibilities. Compensation The Jackson Convention Complex Hospitality Internship Program is a “non-paid” program. Number of Positions Available Each year the Jackson Convention Complex will choose five to ten (5-10) interns each session. Recruitment Timeline Recruitment begins in January for positions beginning in both the summer and fall. Internship Disciplines

Program Options (Length & Time Requirement) Summer Session (Full-time)

The approximate dates of this 8-week internship are June through July of each year. These candidates will need to be able to devote 20 – 30 hours a week in the office including some

weekends to get the most out of the experience. Please Note: Interns must be fully available for the duration of the internship.

Fall/Spring Session (Part-time) The approximate dates of this 8-month internship are September through April of each year. These candidates will need to be able to devote 10 – 20 hours a week in the office including some

weekends to get the most out of the experience. Please Note: The work schedule will be flexible to accommodate school and job needs.

Application Process Summer Session (Full-time)

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for this internship is March 1st of each year. Interview Process: Interviews will occur during the month of March.

o 1st Round – Phone Interview. If selected, 2nd Round – In-Person Interview. Notification: All applicants will be notified of status no later than April 1st.

Fall/Spring Session (Part-time)

Section 5: Internship Program Curriculum The ultimate goal of the JCC Hospitality Intern Program is to provide an inclusive environment for undergraduate and graduate students from the city of Jackson and across the state of Mississippi to supplement their classroom studies with a wide variety of practical learning and working experience. Educational Learning Components The JCC Hospitality Intern Program will allow the student to learn from professionals in a real-world environment by partnering the student with professionals in the chosen disciplines who will serve as their mentor and teacher. The program will also include the educational components of classroom learning, writing assignments and group sharing, on the job learning/training reading assignments. Note: The timeframes listed below are based on the Fall/Spring Session. Summer Session schedule will be modified. Classroom Learning

Students will attend classroom-learning presentations once a month. Some presentations may be specifically tailored to the students, while others may be part of a combined learning program for all SMG – Jackson staff members (i.e. Quarterly Employee Meetings, Bi-Weekly General Meetings). The JCC Hospitality Intern Program is designed to focus on the following areas throughout its course:

1. Getting to Know our World – Focus on understanding the SMG Company and the Jackson Convention Complex

2. Exploring our World, Refining Skills & Self-discovery – Focus on Hospitality Management 3. Resume, Networking & Interviewing Skills – Focus on completing project work and building

relationships 4. Job Opportunities, Interviewing & Project Work – Focus on continued project & event work

and job opportunities

The Classroom Learning Sessions may also include Guest Speakers from various areas within the Hospitality Industry. This may include, but not limited to: Performing Arts Complexes, Casinos, Arenas, Hotels, Sports Complex/Sports Commissions, Restaurants/Catering, etc.

Sharing/Teaching Each Other

All interns will meet every two month, as a group, for 1 – 2 hours. Students will be asked to share experiences, exchange information and have opportunities to “teach” one another.

On the Job Learning

All interns will be given the opportunity for those hands on learning. Supervisors are instructed to provide constant mentoring and teaching. Interns will be given meaningful work experience.

Reading Assignments

Professionals of all kinds have one thing in common, to keep themselves up to date on the latest innovations in their profession…they read! Interns will be expected to read extensively in their chosen discipline. Interns will be given specific publications and periodicals to read.

SMG Global Career Opportunities All interns will be given immediate access to postings for job opportunities within SMG. While jobs upon completion of the internship are not guaranteed, SMG – Jackson staff while assist all qualifying interns in the application process to acquire a job with our prestigious company or other opportunities within the industry.

Section 6: Internship Program Guidelines College and University Guidelines

The JCC Hospitality Intern Program will be offered to students who are currently enrolled in an Associate, Bachelors or Master’s degree program at an accredited college or university in Hospitality/Tourism, Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Sports/Recreation or related field. An Internship/work experience must be part of the student’s graduation requirement.

Offers are only extended to students who can provide documentation that they will receive school credit for the internship. Candidates are strongly encouraged to confirm with their school that they can receive this credit before applying for the internship.

The JCC Hospitality Intern Program will be a “non-paid” program. Student Guidelines

Must be enrolled in a college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program.

Student interns must be enrolled during the time of the internship in a program with a college or university participating in the JCC Hospitality Intern Program (see above guidelines for Colleges and Universities).

Students will be selected based upon the recommendation of their college or university and personal interviews with representatives of the Jackson Convention Complex. They must meet the following minimum requirements:

Grade Point Average: 2.5 General Degree Candidate with a major in Hospitality/Tourism, Sports/Recreation, Business

or related field Community involvement, volunteerism and relevant experience

Must provide full work availability Must provide own transportation to/from work

Section 7: Internship Program Expectations SMG - Jackson Expectations

Provide meaningful and challenging work related to both the hospitality industry and the student’s specific discipline.

Provide a safe workplace. Sincere commitment to the developmental aspects of the student employee. Ensure the job duties match the job description. Supervise students, offering a mentor relationship is also helpful. Maintain an open line of communication between Intern Program/HR Manager, the student and the

colleges/universities designated internship coordinator. Notify the student’s institution when a student has been selected to participate in our program. Provide feedback and evaluations of the student’s work performance to the appropriate person of

contact with the student’s institution. Student Expectations

Exhibit professional behavior at all times: complete assignments, positive attitude, professional appearance, report on time, etc.

Communicate with college/university advisors about the experience as required. Lead the process of earning academic credit through the college/university. Refrain from conducting personal business on the job. Dress appropriately for you department. Exhibit a willingness to learn, grow and develop as a professional. Don’t do just the “bare minimum”…give 100% Ask plenty of questions.

Department Overview:

The Audio/Visual Department at the SMG – Jackson is responsible for fielding A/V and multimedia requests for programs, concerts, and events. The A/V Internship allows individuals interested in a profession in audio/video production and live sound reinforcement an opportunity to develop hands-on skills while participating in personal and professional development mentorship opportunities.

Responsibilities: Supports the Production department through tasks with audio, video, and multimedia aspects of

programs and events Program and event multi-media installations, maintenance, and troubleshooting Troubleshooting A/V, multimedia, and lighting systems during programs, meetings and events Assist with the set-up and engineering of special events, conferences, and on-going program.

Department Overview: Savor…Jackson, is the exclusive provider of Food & Beverage for the Jackson Convention Complex.

Savor…Jackson supports a wide-range of events at the SMG – Jackson including weddings, seminars, corporate meetings, birthday parties, conventions, etc. The Catering & Sales Department facilitates all

aspects of SMG – Jackson Events pertaining to Food & Beverage.

Responsibilities: Assists with administrative duties including fax processing, sorting, collating, stuffing envelopes,

mailings and other administrative functions as assigned. Other tasks include database creation, data entry and update additions and corrections. The intern will provide data output in the form of letters, fax lists, data lists and other reports as requested by account staff

Assisting Catering & Sales Manager with preparing Banquet Event Order (BEO) forms clearly and detailed after conclusion of interview and booking with client

Department Overview: The Culinary Intern will gain working knowledge, along with hands-on training, of the many different aspects of the foodservice industry. Interns will be trained and assist in various cooking, catering and food prep areas. Savor…Jackson will provide a professional foodservice atmosphere in which you will have many opportunities to learn both the business and artistic aspects of the organization.

Interns will spend time with the Executive Chef to review budgeting, pricing, menu planning and personnel supervision. Interns will be supplied with menus, recipes and station worksheets at each menu rotation. Interns will be able to copy operational documents and policies that pertain to a professional kitchen to take with them as they continue their studies.

Responsibilities: Assists in kitchen procedures as instructed

Community/Public Relations (Positions Available: 1)

Department Overview: This internship is the combination of two related components: Community and Public Relations.

CR – This Intern will assist with the growth of the “Heart of SMG” program in the Metro Jackson community, increase awareness of the SMG Brand, improving employee involvement through Community Service and assist in strengthening SMG – Jackson relationship with the local businesses, the City and its partners. The Intern will also lead the efforts to coordinate a signature event and help with various program initiatives.

PR – The individual must demonstrate the ability to undertake basic public relations writing assignments, and possess an understanding of basic media relations skills, an ability to interact professionally with clients, and good judgment. The position will also assist with the department database and public/media relation's efforts.

Responsibilities:

Community Relations Assist in the planning, coordination and execution of community events Conduct research of other community relations programs, and provide a summary of findings

Public Relations

Assist with writing for various client pieces (press releases, photo captions, corporate profiles, press kit packaging, research, etc.)

Assists with the management of newspaper and periodical inventories for easy access.

Event Management/Programming (Positions Available: 1)

Department Overview: The Event Management Intern will assist the Director of Event Services & Event Managers with the overall event coordination of conventions, sporting events, concerts and small scaled events hosted at the Jackson Convention Complex. We are looking for candidates with a passion and a drive to excel at all duties assigned to them. The delivery of quality service and positive interaction with clients, event attendee and sponsors is critical but most importantly, make sure our guests have an enjoyable experience!

Responsibilities: Plan, coordinate and perform general office functions such as telephone support, sending and

receiving of event paper work, handling mail, and maintaining files and records for the Director of Event Services

Assisting the Event Managers with staffing deployments, creating maps, reviewing the technical rider, advancing the show with the Promoter and/or clients and creating event worksheets

Assist in preparing event files and event summary notes, building walkthroughs, and assisting with event estimates and invoices

Assists in special projects as needed

Department Overview:

The Operations Team is responsible for the day-to-day functionality and maintenance of SMG – Jackson. The operations team consists of: Engineering, Conversion and Security. The Operations Intern will gain an understanding of the daily as well as the long term plan for facility management and operations involved in a major multi-purpose facility; and to gain direct experience in planning and implementing specific facility projects including renovations, deferred maintenance projects, and community enhancement.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the preparation for events such as concerts, family shows and sporting events by doing the following: setup and teardown, maintaining crowd control, oversight of events, and overall facility maintenance

Assist in monthly budgetary and operational aspects of the facility (i.e. invoicing and bill review) Work with Director in contract review and negotiation as well as daily monitoring for outsourced

service agreements Assist in planning for future deferred maintenance and renovation projects (outlining goals of

project, researching industry standards and products, preparing cost estimates and coordinating schedules for project)

The Finance/Accounting Intern Program provides the opportunity for interns to apply strategic finance skills, enhance business acumen and accelerate their professional career within the dynamic Hospitality/Tourism Industry.

Department Overview: The SMG – Jackson Marketing Team is looking for an intern that is forward-thinking with strong knowledge and understanding of the digital media landscape, including various social media websites. Interns in this position will need strong critical thinking skills in order to integrate into our vibrant and passionate team who are very excited to share this exciting launch with an intern hoping to gain a ton of great online experience. This Internship opportunity will focus on grassroots marketing and business operations such as: marketing to target demographics, sales and promotions and sponsorship development.
