WELCOME FROM COLLEEN BARNES MERWINDear Dancer and Parents, JOFFREY SOUTH GEORGIAI would like to personally welcome you to Joffrey South’s 2019 summer intensive – it is sure to be a multi-faceted experience where dancers can dive into their technique and artistry in a supportive, intimate, and diverse environment. As my fifth year as Artistic Director of Joffrey South approaches, I wanted to critically re-evaluate the curriculum I have developed and how it has evolved each summer. The result is a mix of faculty you may recognize from my past programs, but also reinvigorated with a few new faculty, who I know will be a positive contribution to the collective learning environment which I aim to cultivate.

For this year’s ballet intensive, I have made a slight change: the older

groups are scheduled to have two-hour ballet technique classes nearly every morning, in addition to a second ballet technique class later in the day. In thinking back to my fond memories of summer intensives as a developing artist, my technique improved more quickly when I had not only a longer daily ballet class, but also a secondary ballet class near the end of the day to revisit corrections I took in from the first class. This spirit of repetition creates opportunity for our beloved bunheads to experience the jump in technique which they seek, offering the space for faster repatterning of old habits that may be holding dancers back, as well as learning new skills within the modality of ballet. Within the jazz program, dancers can expect a diverse range of experiences: daily 90-minute ballet classes, conditioning/stretch, meditation, Horton technique, tap, hip hop, Afro-Jazz, Theatre Jazz, improvisation, and contemporary.

As always, the Joffrey South program culminates in an exciting performance in the theatre of the dance building at the University of Georgia on Friday, June 28th at 7PM. This concert intends to showcase the diverse range of disciplines that the dancers have studied during their time at Joffrey South. Personally, I find this concert to be an incredibly rewarding experience for dancers, parents, and faculty alike – I always love connecting with dancers and families after the show and celebrating the dancer’s transformative experience as a result of their hard work and dedication during the rigorous program.

Dance is, and should be, a medium through which young people can explore self-empowerment, push their own physical and artistic boundaries, and discover joy and community. The faculty and staff at all three of my summer intensives (Joffrey South; Joffrey Colorado Springs; Joffrey Heartland) are all committed to this for our dancers – because without these positive experiences, what is the point?

The Tap Spectacular, Ballet Bootcamp and Fusion programs have been redesigned with a focus on improving technique, exploring musicality and defining style. The studios located in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District, makes for the perfect canvass for exploration, challenge and growth We will take our dancing to the street each week for “Wynwood Wednesday’s”. This popular event gives the dancers an opportunity to explore the complete multi arts experience through site specific improvisation. WELCOME FROM MATTHEW PRESCOTTDear Dancer and Parents, LONDON INTENSIVE Welcome to the Joffrey Ballet School West End London summer intensive! This is our second year of this unique intensive. London is truly one of the epicenters of the arts world, and the West End is an exciting home to musical theater. Once again, we look forward to dancing in the iconic Pineapple Studios in the Covet Garden neighborhood of London.

Our curriculum is comprised of classes that will cultivate, strengthen, and inspire the full musical theater skill set. In the course of a week, you will train in ballet, musical theater jazz, tap, acting, voice, audition prep, repertory, and performance studies. As part of the performance studies classes, you will be paired with a performer from a currently running West End show to create an inspired production number. During the week, students will also spend an evening at the theater to watch the show they are working on. At the end of the week, there will be an informal showing where we will share these new pieces of choreography.

We have a thrill ing week planned and we look forward to watching you grow throughout the course. Thank you for choosing Joffrey West End and we are looking forward to making it a summer to remember!

WELCOME FROM MATTHEW PRESCOTTDear Dancer and Parents, LAS VEGAS INTENSIVE Welcome to the Joffrey Ballet School LAS VEGAS summer intensive! This exciting program showcases what it takes to become a successful performer in today’s highly competitive dance world.

During the week, students will be immersed in classes of ballet, jazz, hip-hop, musical theater, commercial, lyrical, and more. Students will work exclusively with artists from either the Michael Jackson ONE show, or the Beatles LOVE show, and will be “cast” in an original production number inspired by these blockbuster shows. One night, students will also take in a performance to see what happens live onstage! At the end of the week, the Cirque De Soleil inspired numbers will be performed at an informal showing on the UNLV campus.

Throughout the two weeks, students will work with some of the biggest names in the dance world. SYTYCD 2018 winner, Lex Ishimoto, returns to the program this year to share his passion and knowledge of dance. We also welcome back Michael Dameski, runner up in the 2018 World of Dance competition. New to the faculty this year is superstar choreographer, Chase Benz. He knows exactly what it takes to make it, from his experience dancing and choreographing for artists such as Rhianna, The Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears. Additionally, Lacey Schwimmer, professional dancer from Dancing with the Stars is also joining the faculty.

WELCOME FROM MATTHEW PRESCOTTDear Dancer and Parents, NYC MUSICAL THEATER INTENSIVE Welcome to the Joffrey Ballet School Musical Theater NYC summer intensive! Maintaining the motto “to be the dancer that has it all,” the Joffrey Ballet School has been presenting this program for the past five years. We are excited to share the magic of the Broadway community, while inspiring you to reach for your dreams. Utilizing our direct access to Broadway, we have created a musical theater intensive unlike any other. You will train with the performers you admire and gain knowledge into what it takes to make it to the stage!

The program is built to cultivate, strengthen, and inspire the full musical theater skill set. Throughout the week, you will have classes in ballet, musical theater jazz, tap, acting, voice, audition prep, repertory, and performance studies. As part of the performance studies classes, you will be paired with a performer from a currently running Broadway show to create an inspired production number. During the week, students will also spend an evening at the theater to watch the show they are working on. At the end of the week, you will perform on a stage in New York City with Broadway performers in the audience watching you! It’s a week complete with training, camaraderie, and inspiration!

If you have decided to join us for the final week of the intensive, be prepared for an extra special time as we celebrate our five-year milestone! We have put together a complete gala evening that honors musical theater. Students will be onstage alongside Broadway’s finest, performing some of history’s most cherished musical numbers.

WELCOME FROM MATTHEW PRESCOTTDear Student and Parents, JOFFREY CIRQUE ARTSWelcome to the Joffrey Ballet School Cirque Arts summer intensive! It’s been a dream to build a summer experience with the world-renowned, Cirque du Soleil. Get ready to pull back the curtain into this magical world and discover something you never knew about yourself!

Each day you will have classes specifically designed to build and strengthen the diverse skill set required of circus performers. Cirque du Soleil members will coach you in acrobatics, lyra, prop manipulation, clowning, stage combat, and stylized dance classes. All classes will be held at the nationally certified circus training facility, L’Oracle.

This summer we are specifically focusing on Ka, at the MGM Grand Hotel. This show is an incredible feat of imagination, production, and innovation that is sure to inspire all. Students will have the chance to see training sessions, interact with the performers, and then see a live performance. Get ready to be amazed!

We thank you for being a part of this exciting new program! The beauty and intrigue of Cirque du Soleil has tempted audiences for generations and we are thrilled to have the ability to take a behind-the-scenes look!
