The evenT

The natural beauties of Cava Pietra Franco and the Baroque art of Modica, where the cave leans over, inspired the three musicians who, with the support of a very attentive and warm audience, brought to life an exciting live concert.

The experience of Joris Teepe, regular bassist of jazz giants Rashied Ali, John Coltrane’s drummer, and of Benny Golson, and the versatility of Steve Altenberg, who has appeared as a sideman on over forty international releases having worked with, among others, Dr. Lonnie Smith, John Abercrombie, Randy Brecker, Barry Harris, Kevin Hays and Chris Potter, are the rich soil from which the creativity of young pianist Giacomo Caruso blooms.

The Music of The Trio

The repertoire of the trio is various: it includes original compositions by the young pianist, arrangements of American jazz songs and free improvisations. Their music, solidly resting on jazz tradition, takes fl ight towards extemporary excursions in many different territories: from rock to classical and gospel. Joris Teepe’s solidity melts well with the music of Steve Altenberg, who “literally marries contours of notes while playing with silences. His light pulsation and nuance do not have anything metronomic and instigate the music continuously” (Jazz Journal, England). Giacomo Caruso’s fresh ideas are coherent and unpredictable, keeping audience’s attention spans constantly engaged.

The arTisTs

Joris Teepe and Steve Altenberg have been playing together for two decades, performing on the most prestigious stages worldwide. joris Teepe was on the road performing and recording with jazz giants Benny Golson (historic member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers), and Rashied Ali (John Coltrane’s drummer). He also performed and recorded with Tom Harrell, Mulgrew Miller, Chris Potter, Don Braden, Gene Jackson, Randy Brecker, Carl Allen and many other important New York based musicians. steve altenberg , after becoming a very demanded drummerin New York and collaborating with, among others, John Abercrombie, Barry Harris, Kevin Hays and Philip Harper, movedto Amsterdam where he has performed regularly with some

of the best players of the Dutch jazz scene: Michael Moore,Marc van Roon and Paul Berner.

social coMMiTMenT: avis

This charity concert was promoted by avis Modica who devoted years to raising awareness for the theme of blood donation through alternative ways.

Carmelo Avola, President of avis Modica, writes: “The choiceof donating blood is often associated to the value of solidarity. But, if you think carefully, it brings also important advantagesto the donor. From the selfl ess act of the donation comes, in fact, some sort of personal and social gratifi cation which makes the donor feel good and brings other people esteem. It is also an effective form of health prevention, thanks to blood analysis and electrocardiogram which donors can recieve for free periodically; as wells as some sort of life insurance, since the blood could be needed by the donor itself or its relatives and friends.

Therefore not only altruism, but awareness of making a smart choice which permits us to have many advantages for a minimal sacrifi ce.

The reinforcement of an association format like the one of avis makes possible cultural and recreational events, which make sociallife intense and less plain: Jazzin’ for Avis is an exemplar demonstration of it. The concert on the 31st of August 2012 with Giacomo Caruso, Joris Teepe and Steve Altenberg, was a great gift to Modica. That night in Cava Pietra Franco made time stop. The music, the spectacular view on Modica, the full moon, the audience, the great welcome of Bartolo Turlà to Cava Pietra Franco, everything was a gift for each other and all together made possible the magic of a moment which might never have been.
