THE FSU SUMMER MUSIC CAMPS presents JUNE 9 - JUNE 15, 2013 The Jazz Ensemble Camp for Middle School is designed to introduce campers to the foundations of jazz music and performance. Campers will play and perform in one of three big bands and will take classes in improvisation, jazz appreciation, sectionals, and master classes. They will also participate in evening jam sessions where they can work on their new skills, listen to other players, and experience jazz on a new level. REGISTRATION OPENS JANUARY 3, 2013 Instructors Include Prof. Rodney Jordan, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies, FSU Prof. Leon Anderson, Associate Professor & Director of Jazz Studies, FSU Prof. Bill Kennedy, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media, FSU Prof. Paul McKee, Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone, FSU Prof. William Peterson, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Music Theory, FSU Eligibility Campers must have attended grades 7 or 8 in the ‘12-’13 school year. (Rising 7th graders during summer 2013 are not eligible). Cost for Day Students $280.00 Includes tuition only. No housing or meals. Cost for Overnight Students $465.00 Includes tuition, deposit, housing & 3 meals per day. Check-In Date Sunday, June 9, 2013 1:00PM-3:00pm (EST) All campers must attend check-in. If you can not arrive during the designated times due to extenuating circumstances, arrangements must be made in advance with the camp office. Final Recital & Check-Out Saturday, June 15, 2013 Recital at 11:00AM in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall; Check out will follow this performance. SAMPLE DAILY SCHEDULE

All campers will complete a placement audition. For this audition you should prepare:

WIND INSTRUMENTS:• Two major scales of your choice• A piece of your choice

DRUMMERS:• Please be able to play a swing pattern

BASS (Electric & Upright), Piano & Guitar:• Please be able to play a 12 part blues pattern

Once band assignments have been made, they will not be changed. Before your first class on June 10th, you will receive a personalized schedule that will include your large symphonic band placement and will give you the times and locations of all of your classes.

PLACEMENT AUDITIONS ELIGIBLE INSTRUMENTSThe following instruments are eligible to register for this camp:

Students interested in playing other instruments should contact the camp office. Sorry, we do not accept Jazz Vocalists.

A SAMPLE OF PREVIOUS LITERATURE PERFORMED

All campers must bring their own instrument to camp:Drummers - you are encouraged to bring your own drum kit, however, it is not required.Electric Guitar - you must also bring your own amplifier and power cords. Electric Bass - you must also bring your own amplifier and power cords. Piano - bring a pair of headphones with a 1/4” stereo jack

All campers must also bring the following:A folding music stand labeled with your name• Instrument Accessories (ie. valve oil, cleaning cloths, etc.)• Music to be used for personal practice• A full packing list of what to pack for clothing and personal itesm will be • provided.
