Jastrzębie Zdrój

Coat of arms

The animal depicted on the coat of arms is inextricably connected with the past of Jastrzębie. In the second half of the 15th century, a king’s envoy, the knight of Ruchenstein,was sent to the surroundings of Jastrzębie to guarantee merchants’ caravans safe passage. However, the knight and his companions started to attack the people they were supposedto protect. After a while, all of the inhabitantsof the neighbouring settlements were terrifiedof the infamous knight. Owing to the methods which he used, the knight gained the nickname ”Jastrząb” (hawk in Polish).

This nickname laid ground for the name of the town and for the symbol which is depicted on the seal and on Jastrzębie Zdrój’s coat of arms.

In the 20th century, this depiction was approved as the official seal of Jastrzębie Zdrój and was in use until 1977. 

The dynamic development of mining sector and the subsequent transformation of the town brought about the necessity to update the coat of arms. This task was entrusted to Szymon Kobyliński, a famous Polish graphic artist. He created a newcoat of arms on the basis of the old one.
