QUICK SNIPPETS Caloundra will display an f-111

Big news for caloundra’s Queensland air museum is the announcement that the museum will receive an F-111 aircraft on permanent loan from the Royal australian air force. delivery will be early in 2013. The public has a love affair with the F-111 aircraft after watching them in action since the 1970’s and at special events when they lit the skies with their dump and burn manoeuvre. that popularity should translate into a huge swing in visitor numbers through the museum when the aircraft comes on display. For the history of the F-111 bound for caloundra go to http://www.qam.com.au/aircraft/f-111/A8-129.htm Congratulations to everyone at the Qam.

unfortunately, there are plenty of people in the world who don’t have the luxury to indulge over the festive season, as a matter of fact they don’t get to indulge at all, merely just survive.

In the next 6 weeks, one hundred thousand people across australia will go to the salvation army for help. caring for them will cost around three million dollars. this money will go towards offering help in some way, whether it is a warm meal, some accommodation, personal counselling, financial support and practical assistance including clothes and food hampers. money to fund these programs doesn’t just appear. it takes people like you to make this sort of help available, whether it is in volunteering some of your time, making a donation or supporting a fundraising event.

it all goes towards the gift of giving. the salvation army will be working tirelessly over this time offering its services to people that need it most.

THE DiFFereNce YOu caN MaKe BY CHANGING A fEW lIGHT BUlBS

the australian Government’s move to phase out incandescent light bulbs in favour of compact fluorescent lamps by 2010 was welcomed as an important initiative to combat global warming. However, discarded fluorescent lights bring a new environmental problem – higher levels of poisonous mercury in landfill. The mercury contained in fluorescent light bulbs that end up in landfill, can evaporate into the air or leach into the groundwater.

there is a much better alternative to protect the environment, help your back pocket and give a much nicer aesthetic appeal than fluorescent bulbs. LED tube lighting can give your business an energy saving of up to 53% over conventional fluorescent tubes, which translates to financial savings for you. Andrew Dean, owner of the regatta one Business

centre, Birtinya, noted that his running costs dropped from $1.27 to 60 cents per hour of use after installing led tubes from Sinfin Lighting.

Though currently more expensive to purchase up front, LED lighting fixtures will save you in the long-term.

led lighting is pouring onto the market and it’s “buyer beware” of the quality. this is where sinfin lighting, a caloundra based business, can help tremendously, as all their lighting is passed for use in australia by the certifying authorities.

sinfin lighting has formed a strategic alliance with one of the world’s largest producers of energy efficient lighting, IEQ Australia Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of ieQ Global. ieQ Global designs, manufactures and supplies an extensive range of practical lightings for a greener

planet, ranging from led lighting technologies to induction and plasma lights. with a wide variety of green lighting technology, the ieQ lamps are ideal for homes, offices, as well as commercial and industrial purposes.

the company provides the brightest and most creatively versatile range of energy efficient products, which are ecologically sustainable by design, but without ever compromising the quality or comfort expected by the end user.

Contact SinFin Lighting for a consultation to see how much money you can save by changing to energy efficient lighting.

ENdlESS POSSIBIlITIES IN THE BuSiNeSS WOrLD Of CARAVANS

Right in our backyard sits a leading edge company manufacturing caravans that’s shining the spotlight on Caloundra as it takes Australia by storm. Free Spirit Caravans began four years ago when director Elaine Foster and engineer Ralf Brosch spotted a gap in the off-road caravan market. What was missing was a caravan light enough to be towed by a 4 cylinder engine, yet at the same time strong and durable to take on the toughest roads.

Could it be done? Yes!

The company was destined for success when they were the recipient of an innovation scholarship award from the Australian Institute of Commercialisation, only awarded to three companies in Australia.

“We really wanted to create something unique that was first and foremost the highest grade quality product, with new materials and using new design techniques. We continue to develop more innovations keeping true to our mission ‘transformation via innovation’ in the design and build of the most durable off road caravan. We aim to be a most dynamic and innovative caravan manufacturer in Australia” said Ms Foster.

Four years down the track and Free Spirit Caravans have been chosen by the government to build two ‘flag ship caravans’ that will go into outback Australia to provide mobile x-ray and dental services to indigenous communities not easily reached by any other method.

“It is our proudest moment to date and we feel honoured that our custom design medical vans will give accessibility to remote communities for medical support” said Ms Foster.

The two medical vans are the first of their kind with orders for more coming in.

“We only hope that this will be the start of something truly amazing. You can’t help but wonder what else can be achieved by our unique caravans” said Ms Foster.

From humble beginnings Free Spirit Caravans now employ seventeen staff in their factory at Enterprise St, Caloundra. They get visits from prospective purchasers from all over the country who receive a guided tour of the factory floor and can view their unique design services.

You only need to read a caravan publication, talk to an outback traveller or visit a caravan trade show to see the excitement around these unique caravans.

It’s remarkable what is being achieved in our backyard.

IN AN EVER-CHANGING WORld WHERE TECHNOlOGY CONTINUES TO AmAzE US, BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES ARE BECOmING ENdlESS, ANd THE dOORS ARE OPENING UP fOR mANY ORGANISATIONS TO OPERATE GlOBAllY.

caloundra based business crazy skates captures the essence of conducting business internationally. Predominantly selling their products to the us market, crazy skates is becoming a household name to us skaters due to the comfort and practicality of the skate shoes.

as a roller skate manufacturer and previous owner of rollerdrome caloundra for 18 years, John moore knows a thing or two about roller skates. John also knows a thing or two about roller derby, and he is very excited to see Caloundra host the RollerCon Down Under.

It will be the first time that RollerCon has left the United States.

rollercon down under will be staged at the caloundra indoor stadium on the 30th of november to the 2nd of december should attract more than 2000 participants along with support.

“to have this event in caloundra is just amazing. the amount of people it is going to bring to our town will do wonders for business over this time” mr moore said.

it’s no surprise to skaters that lots of participants at the rollercon down under will be wearing crazy skates, because of the quality of the product. this is a massive feat for the local caloundra business.

las vegas based rollercon down under event organiser, ivanna Spankin, said that it has been difficult trying to organise an event on the other side of the world, but she is amazed that it can be achieved. she said they are receiving lots of help from local leagues and sponsors like crazy skates, local merchants and derby businesses.

“crazy skates makes the most amazing skates and the product is so popular here, it just keeps growing. we are thrilled to be running the RollerCon in Australia for the first time, in particular we are so excited to get everyone to Caloundra and experience the amazing beaches” ms spankin said.

caloundra chamber of commerce’s Bill darby said local tourism operators are very excited about the event coming to Caloundra. He said it has made what was otherwise a quiet time for business into a busy time.

“late november is a slow time for many business operators before the holidays, so to have that number of people drop into caloundra for a few days is perfect for the local businesses. we are proud to highlight caloundra as a destination for this fantastic event” he said.

coastal assassins representative sarah armstrong said that roller derby is the fastest growing woman’s sport in the world.

“roller derby involves trying to stop opponents passing you within the boundaries of the track. once a jammer’s hips pass the hips of an opposing blocker they score a point. that is the general gist of it but obviously, like most other sports, there is a lot more that’s involved.

“We are all super excited to have the event being run not only in australia but in beautiful caloundra, we can’t wait to play host to fellow skaters from across the globe” ms armstrong said.

many of the coastal assassins wear crazy skates products and love the fact that an australian designed product is so prominent in their sport not just in australia and overseas.

JAmES HOmE services

WHAT CAN We LearN fROm JAmES HOmE SERVICES

SO WHAT IS A SYSTEm ANd WHY HAVE THEm.

• A system is a documented set of steps or procedures of what you do in your business.

• A system lets everyone know the way it is supposed to be done in your business without choice or discretion

• It keeps things very simple

• It allows a business owner to manage agreements with staff

• Everyone in the business understands what is expected of them. it increases staff morale and confidence

• Staff are able to produce a predictable result each and every time

• If there are no systems in a business - then anarchy rules

• If it is not written, it is not real

• The great thing about a system is, if something does go wrong, we can go back to the system and find out where the problem is and fix it before it starts costing you, the business owner money

Starting a business from scratch is definitely no easy feat, and turning that business into a success is another test all together. The failure rate of start-up businesses is a sad reality but also a startling reminder to appreciate success stories even more.

everyone would be familiar with the brand of James home services, which has had national success. however it hasn’t ever been easy or come without hard work. from its start 18 years ago as a car wash service in caloundra, it is true to say the business has come a long way.

James home services started in 1993 after robert James was washing cars and saw the need for home services in the community. the business took off in 1999 and today there are 400 franchisees and seven different services available. they include interior house cleaning, Carpet and Pest Control, Window and Exterior house cleaning, lawn mowing, mobile car Cleaning, Mobile Pet Grooming, and Ironing and laundry service.

the strength of James home services is that it is a systems orientated company. Business systems have enabled this national franchise operator to ride the storms of the corporate world. a lot of businesses will be well aware of

the peaks and troughs that the business world experiences and Robert and wife Rhonda James know only too well how things can change in an instant and you should always expect the unexpected.

rhonda learnt how important systems were when their daughter, who was eleven at the time, had two massive heart attacks and later required a heart transplant. she said they fortunately were able to take the time off work to be there for their family and still have money coming in due to the systems they had implemented in the business.

“it was our commitment to systems that kept our business afloat” Ms James said.

“there are too many business managers that won’t take a holiday because they are afraid the business will not run effectively without them. that is what makes systems so important. People need to set up their business so that someone can walk in tomorrow and run it”.

a few months ago ‘mobile coffee with James’ was launched. this business is quickly getting traction and robert and rhonda are very excited with the results it is bringing for their franchisees.

“Business systems should be such a fundamental part of any organisation, it can benefit any business greatly, as it has ours” ms James said.

INTERNET marKetinG

GROW YOUR BUSINESS WITH iNterNet mARKETING

SmAll TO mEdIUm SIzEd BUSINESSES HAVE A lOT TO GAIN BY BEING VISIBlE TO THE EVER-GROWING NUmBER Of POTENTIAl CUSTOmERS WHO SEARCH ONlINE.

it is no secret that search engines, particularly Google, are now a tool of choice that people use to investigate businesses, products and services and it makes business sense to target the 300 million people that log approximately 2 billion searches on Google each day.

SponsoredLinX, a Brisbane-based Google Premier Partner and australia’s fastest growing search marketing company, advises that once your business is online there are many ways you can use internet marketing to increase leads and sales, for example:

• search Engine optimisation (sEo) is the route to getting your website into the top positions of a search page. through selecting specific keywords, you can ensure users find your business when they search this.

• By optimising adWords you can generate not only increased traffic to your business website but high quality search traffic.

• social media is about building an online community for your business and promoting continued interaction with your customers.

• Ensuring your website is compatible for mobile since an increasing number of smartphone users are using internet search through their mobile phones, businesses should ensure their website can be viewed on a smartphone.

Why businesses should have an Internet marketing strategy• to be visible to the growing number of people using

online search to find businesses, products and services

• Mobile search traffic will revolutionise small and medium business activity. By 2015 mobile traffic will surpass traditional web traffic in volume

according to Ben Bradshaw, internet marketing pioneer and ceo of australia’s largest australian owned adwords management company, sponsoredlinX, “the aim of internet marketing, seo and adwords, is to increase online traffic for businesses. Smartphone penetration is huge and Google research shows that 86% of smartphone users have used their phone to look for local information, 48% of them on a weekly basis, and of those people, 88% have taken action as a result.”

mr Bradhsaw was the guest speaker at the caloundra chamber’s Business Breakfast on november the 1st.

on the wonderful work carried out in the Visitor Information Centres. many of you would have driven past the visitor information centres along caloundra road or nicklin Way at Jessica Park, or if you have been to the Bulcock st markets on a sunday morning you may have noticed the centre affectionately referred to as the cubby.

Across these three centres we have approximately six paid staff who manage a wide range of visitor enquiries and bookings, from accommodation and attractions to tours and transport.

however the unsung heroes of the centres are the 70 to 80 unpaid volunteers who turn up each and every week to provide visitors to the region with local insights, recommendations and advice.

visitor feedback is positive and complimentary of the front line members of tourism information in the region.

if operators haven’t engaged with them yet, it is worth taking the time to drop in, say ‘hi’ and tell them a bit about your business.

if anyone has the knowledge, desire and time to spend some time volunteering in one of our visitor information centres, i would love to hear from you. we are always looking for help to provide visitors to our region with an exceptional experience.

TOURISm fORUmLast month Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) in conjunction with sunshine coast council hosted a tourism forum modelled on the recently held state tourism forum destination Q.

over 100 local operators attended the event which featured leading tourism speakers and workshops.

A common theme of the day was unity with previously identified issues such as the Bruce Highway upgrade, Airport expansion and convention centre topping the list, as well as new ideas and thinking to “not always do as we have done.” the most important steps will unfold over the next period with priorities informing scdl’s strategic and operational plan for the sunshine coast over the short and longer terms.

AIR NEW zEAlANd flIGHTSthe air new Zealand seasonal service from auckland to the Sunshine Coast has now come to an end. Pleasingly, over 3000 passengers utilised the service since 1 July. we are hopeful of a future announcement for the service to be repeated in 2013.

SO ClOSE, BUT A WORld AWAYlast month, scdl launched their new experiences campaign – “So Close, But a world away”. with themes including romantic holidays, family deals and eat, play and do; the campaign will be promoted via digital, print and television advertising to our key drive market. TOUCH dOWN fOR SPORTSCongratulations to Stockland Park for winning the right to host a number of touch football events from 2013 to 2015. Participatory sports are invaluable to the region in terms of boosting the local economy, with the touch participants and others expected to generate $3 million in the first year alone.

to achieve their goal, however, they soon realised they required some local support and knowledge.

Jason Patton, owner of Patton’s Meats, met with Michael shadforth of caloundra chamber of commerce to discuss his growth plans. michael, recognising the potential of Jason’s business, quickly put him in contact with edward Gainer at the sunshine coast council. as part of council’s local Business support program ed was able to connect Jason to a number of local service providers best suited to help him with his project.

firstly, a town planner was engaged to help with checking land zoning, development applications and assisted with processing the necessary paperwork. Jason then met with an accountant who made sure his figures stacked up and set up a financial sustainability plan. Understanding his current business figures and future projections helped Jason make his new business decisions with greater confidence. Jason is committed to continuing his relationship with the accountant and is already booked in for regular meetings to ensure progress and targets

are achieved and reviewed, and new plans can be developed to ensure the sustainability of his business.

Jason said that the whole process was made easy for him through receiving advice and assistance from local experts that enabled the project to move through quite quickly.

“i am more than happy with the support i received” said Jason of the council program. “it was very helpful, and it’s good to see Council supporting local businesses to expand.”

Jason’s experience with Local Business Support enabled him to make better decisions through understanding the challenges and opportunities with opening a second store. his ongoing relationships with local experts will allow him to closely monitor the performance of his business investment, something he is really looking forward to getting his teeth into!

from wednesday 17th october you’re invited to shop at Patton’s Meats Caloundra store at 9 Daniel Street or visit www.pattonsmeat.com.au for more information on Patton’s Meats.

EVOlUTION Of A COmmUNITY IS ESSENTIAl fOR ITS SUSTAINABIlITY

in a rapidly changing world, our thinking and actions cannot be of the past. While Caloundra is a very family-friendly and popular tourism destination, the caloundra south development and Kawana town centre are of the future. with that in mind, it is very timely for local businesses, residents and groups to think about developing “Brand caloundra”.

the hospital at Kawana is an enormous plank in the “health and wellbeing” industry of the coast. it is one that will only grow. directly and indirectly we need to hook into it.

let’s consider what caloundra has to offer;

• A mixture of family-owned, traditional and modern shops lining our iconic Bulcock st and esplanades

• Attractions such as the Markets on

Bulcock st, Queensland air museum, coastal walkways, art galleries and popular beaches

• Employment hubs such as the caloundra aerodrome and industrial areas

• Friendly community groups

• Major events such as the Caloundra music festival and key venues including the sunshine coast function centre and the events centre.

all of these could be components of “health and wellbeing.” the challenge is how do we make it happen?

i understand and endorse development will happen, otherwise we are doomed to the past. however, it’s crucial that we develop “Brand caloundra” now and not look back in years to come and wonder

“What does Caloundra represent?”

i’m keen to hear your thoughts. email: [email protected]

“BRANd CAlOUNdRA”

SUNSHINE COAST UNIVERSITY HOSPITAl

construction is underway of the sunshine coast university hospital at Kawana. it’s set to open in late 2016.

this hospital will be a major boost for local residents, with services including an emergency department, a comprehensive cancer centre, specialised medical and surgical services (including neurosurgery and cardiac surgery) a maternity service, rehabilitation service and renal service.

this means that patients who would have travelled to Brisbane for certain specialist services will no longer have to.

Keep an eye on the website for updates and if you are looking for work.

With the combination of perfect weather, Caloundra full of visitors, locals in party mode, buskers entertaining, a great location and interesting stalls to visit, the Twilight Market on the 28th September was absolutely pumping. Bulcock Beach was the place to be and people came from everywhere to take in the ambience of a market on the water’s edge. the caloundra chamber of commerce were responsible for the event and couldn’t have been happier with the result. it was a great combined effort of stallholders, businesses and the public who came together for a top night. the chamber’s market manager mariannje also wove her magic and brought the event to life. the chamber would like to thank michael hallam from Bounce smoothie and ice cream bar, who delivered the entertainment at the market as part of the monaco Bulcock Busking festival.

the twilight market will be back soon for 6 consecutive friday nights: 7th december, 14th december, 21st december, 28th december, 4th January and 11th January. the market will open at 4pm and close at 9pm. Part of the Esplanade at Bulcock Beach will close from 2pm and reopen at 10pm. a detour will be put in place. see you in december on friday night at Bulcock Beach and of course, in Bulcock street every sunday morning 52 weeks of the year.

CAROlYN THOmSON, General manager of Kadoe commercial coatings, was named winner of the nokia Business innovation award at the 2012 telstra Queensland Business women’s awards in october.

The extensive wet weather that led to the 2011 floods across most of Queensland, put a great strain on the business that at that time did most of its work outdoors. carolyn got busy and did some thinking outside of the square. her intuition led her to develop a plan to ‘weatherproof’ the business. she knew that she had to diversify the product offerings so that the company could survive, if not thrive, in all trading conditions. now Kadoe installs waterproofing on new buildings using a gentle ‘no grind’ polished concrete that’s unaffected by wet weather and gets better with use.

ms thomson said she was ecstatic with winning the innovation Award from a field of 4,600 nominations and 24 State finalists.

“it is overwhelming to win such an esteemed award. my business has become larger than life because i did some strategic thinking and as a result we introduced some new products and services that are breaking new ground. the theme at the awards announcement was ‘incredible can come from anywhere’. who would have thought that the judges would have seen that incredible can come from a media room in Pelican waters!”

Kate mcKenzie, Group managing director telstra innovation, Products & Marketing and Telstra Business Women’s Awards ambassador, said the winners in Queensland were inspirational

business women and leaders in their sectors. “they have displayed innovation in their business or community that influences and motivates others and their achievements are cause for celebration,” she said.

ms mcKenzie said the telstra awards judges praised ms Thomson for “solving difficult technical issues in an industry in which she had little background. her innovations are behind Kadoe’s rapid growth and she continues to innovate to keep ahead of competitors.”

carolyn was the only sunshine coast winner in the Queensland finals. Other winners included Karla Way-McPhail, Yeppoon-based co-founder and CEO of underground mining contractor undamine industries and registered training provider coal train australia; carolyn Devries, founder of non-profit law firm New Way Lawyers of Corinda and Chandra Clements, CEO of Brisbane-headquartered sentis, an international business that applies psychology to safety, wellbeing, organisational and leadership performance.

the caloundra chamber and all of the business community, wishes Carolyn the best of luck at the national finals in Sydney on november 21.
