1. On the "New Jimmy ReedAlbum" from Bluesw ay , justissued here on HMV, the Ameri-can sleeve -notes state there isanother guitarist on some of thetracks, who they are unable toname for contractual reasons.Now my contention is that it isProbably Hubert Sumlin. But hasanybody got any definite informa-tion on this point?

2. Can anyone give the line-upof the Coasters, on their newDate record (out here on CBS)?The reason for this query is thata certain Billy Guy had a singleout recently on Verve, and Iwonder if it's the one who wasin the Coasters.

3. Eddie Floyd is said to havehad at least three singles onthe Stax/Volt subsidiary Safice.Can anyone supply titles andnumbers? Also the recent EddieFloyd single on London came fromLupine. Now was this a LupineFalcons track, renamed as anEddie Floyd track, or did he infact record solos for Lupine?

4. Just like to set the recordstraight here on one point. Ithas been stated that FrankieFord's new single, "I Can't FaceTomorrow" (on Debloon in theStates) is his first since 1961.In fact. in between he made"Hello Dolly" for 20th CenturyFox in 1964.

5. One of the Four Tops statedthat besides the jazz album theymade for Workshop (the Tamla/Motown jazz subsidiary), theyalso made one or more for River-side. Does anybody know any-thing about this, such as titlesor numbers, etc.?

6. Nat Perrilliat, tenor saxistwho was over here with FatsDomino, says that he made analbum in 1959, with a clarinet-tist named Alvin Baptiste, for anAmerican label called RexRecords. Anyone know anythingat all about this album, or theaddress of Rex Record please?

7. Does anyone know the num-ber, or tracks, of an albumcalled "Everyday I Have TheBlues" which features LowellFulson, Charles Brown, LloydGlenn and Jimmy McCracklin,reputedly on the American C & Wlabel Starday?

8. Bill Black's pianist/organist

has made at least two solosingles to my knowledge. Oneon Sun, and one on TRI. Arethere any more that are knownof?

9. Does anyone know the nameof the guitarist in the Joe Scottband which backs Bobby Bland?

10. Now about Roy Head'srecordings. I believe that theBackbeat ones are the mostrecently recorded. But whatabout the TNT and Scepter ones?I have a feeling that the Sceptertracks came from another label- can anyone confirm this? Andalso the TNT album I think, isvery old, but may have had anorgan dubbed on it at sometime. Any confirmation on thesepoints would be welcome.

11. Chuck Willis has had twoalbums released by Epic -"Chuck Willis Wails The Blues"and "A Tribute To Chuck Willis".Is the personnel which backsChuck on either of these twoLPs known?

12. On the Atlantic "SaturdayNight At The Uptown" LP, aknockout guitarist is heard behindWilson Pickett on "If You NeedMe". Anyone know his name-and is he one of the OhioUntouchables, who I believebacked Pickett at some time?

13. "The Sun Is Shining" byElmore James on "The BluesVol. 3" is a completey differenttake of the tune to that on theChess single version - even thewords of the last verse aredifferent. Anyone know for sureanything regarding this fact?

14. The very first recordingsmade by The Isley Brotherswere for Gone Records (aRoulette subsidiary). I know offive tracks, which are to befound on the End (anotherRoulette subsid.) LP, "Battle OfThe Groups". Can it be confirmedthat these are the only five theymade for Gone, or were theremore?

15. Where the story camefrom that Mickey Baker playsguitar on Ike & Tina Turner's"It's Gonna Work Out Fine"?I'm willing to bet that it is Ikehimself-evidence being his workon his solo Crown LP. However,I wouldn't mind being provenwrong. Hard facts anyone?

AN open letter to the Rolling Stones: As a matter ofgrowing personal curiosity I would like to know why

you have tended to stray so far from the sound on youramazing "Rolling Stones" LP. I can see that you mustdiversify your activities on record, but would it really betoo much to ask for another bluesy album - writing thesongs is no problem as "Spider And The Fly" and "HighAnd Dry" show so well. Your treatment of other people'smaterial such as "Cry To Me" and "That's How Strong MyLove Is" shows equally clearly. I doubt if this dream wouldbe realised, but there must be hundreds of thousandswho'd buy it, like they did "Little Red Rooster", your onlyinstant No. 1, and in one chart, your first chart topper. -Keith Wilson, 15, Mayfield Road, Weybridge, Surrey.

CUT-PRICE L.P.'s?HOW do the major labels, all but

one of which now run a cheappop label justify the difference

in price between their series whenthe quality of the records is in eachcase usually similar? Pye now seemto release their older material ontheir 12s. 6d, Marble Arch label,and not Golden Guinea. Doesn't thissuggest that they find it moreprofitable to do so because of amore than proportionate increase indemand created by the price reduc-tion? I think it's time Polydor fol-lowed the lead of Ember who sellall their LPs at 17s. 9d. and cutthe price of theirs - they might bedoing themselves a good turn.Derek Brandon, 40 Leighton Road,lichen, Southampton.

James Craig - Youmust take into accountDerek, the enormous costof studios and musicians.This is why cheap - labelLP's are usually oldmaterial for which there areno studio overheads. In thecase of American or foreignmaterial, a very high per-centage has to be paid tothe mother company, whichis reduced proportionatelyfor re -issues.

Ever sincethen I have bought every singleand LP Marianne ever had issued.I was always knocked out whenI saw her on TV-she was so un-touchable. I'm sure there weren'tmany fellows in England who didn'tlike Marianne. Then she got mar-ried-I remained her fan and stillbought her records. But this weekI was really brought down. Why?Because to me she has ruined herimage by posing on a front coverof a weekly magazine dressed onlyin black underwear and blackstockings leading up to hersuspenders which are also fullyrevealed. NANCY DEFENCETHE remarks from 'Sandie ShawI Fan' about Nancy Sinatra

LIVE RECORDS PLEAWITH the high price of records

today, why aren't there more"live" LPs and EPs? Surely

they are cheaper to produce andrecord than if they were made ina studio-instead of spending costlyhours in a recording studio, whynot go to good clubs like theMarquee or Flamingo and spendtwo pleasant hours recording? Buck-the nonIllashuillegiant...

WITH the emergence ofCountry & Western, or

at least songs of Countryorigin, there is naturally alot more space given over inmagazines to the men whospearhead the trend. Onesuch man is Buck Owens, whohas been the most successfulgenuine Country artiste overthe past two or three years.

Buck has one main differencefrom his rivals for the crown. Herecords not in Nashville but inBakersfield, California. He alsospends most of his time on theWest Coast. Thanks to Buck and afew others, Bakersfield is becomingquite a strong opposition to Nash-ville. Other West Coast artistesinclude Tommy Collins, Merle Hag-gard, Bonnie Owens and Red Simp-son.

Bakersfield is a rich farmingand oil -producing community with apopulation of around 70,000. It is

situated just over 100 miles fromLos Angeles, which is actuallywhere the artistes record for theCapitol Recording Company, mostlyunder the direction of Ken Nelson.

Back to Buck. He was born inSherman, Texas but reared inMesa, Arizona. It was in 1951 thatBuck and his family moved toBakersfield. Having played inseveral of the local, small-timebands, Buck was spotted by famedC & W star, Tommy Collins. Col-lins, quick to spot the potential ofthe young guitarist, persuaded Buckto join up. Whilst with the band.Buck recorded one or two soloitems for Claude Caviness' PopRecord Company of Pico Rivera,California. Capitol, who had beenkeeping close tabs on the younggenius, soon signed him exclusivelyto their own roster. The success inthe last few years has prompted theresidents to jokingly refer to theirtown as 13uckersfield'i

But for Buck it was not an easyride to the top. In his 38 years hehas had many disappointments.

Until he was in his early twentieshe was not sufficiently good withhis guitar to get a job. lie becameon leaving school, a truck driver-hauling fruit and produce betweenCalifornia's San Joaquin Valley andhis home town of Phoenix, Arizona.Then before moving to California,he played with the Bill Wood Bandin Parkersfield, Arizona.With his band, the Buckeroos, he

is now happily placed as America'stop Country and Western artiste.To his credit he has such hits as"LOVE'S GONNA LIVE HERE","I'VE GOT A TIGER BY THE'PAIL", "MY HEART SKIPS ABEAT':, "ACT NATURALLY" (alsorecorded by the Beatles). "CRY-ING TIME" (also recorded by RayCharles) and more recently "SAM'SPLACE". Buck writes nearly every-thing he records.

It certainly looks as though Mr.Buck Owens will still be on top inthis year's C & W Popularity Pollsand there is no sign of his down-fall.

The songs you have recorded so far have embraceda dog, a 9 to 5 type job, a gun, and a market. Butyou appear to avoid the love -type of lyric. Why?

A. I have in fact written a number of love -songs, but love -songs, for me, are very deep-too deep. I find that otherthings, such as observing everyday life, are far more in-teresting. A lot of my ideas are from personal ex-periences.

Q. Do you believe in "message songs"?A. Yes, this is something I believe in. Messages are very

important to me. I have written two songs whichhave very deep messages. I don't know whether Ishall release them, though. They may not be under-stood.

Q. Why not? Do you find it difficult to communicatewhat you really feel in a song?

A. Well, yes I do. You see, if I were to explain in con-versational terms what I mean people would under-stand, but I have to express myself in more abstractterms. Even then, if the kids were to understandwhat it was all about, I'd have to chat to them forten minutes before singing it. Even so, I do preferto write songs that say something. I like the ProcolHarum record very much, but I couldn't have writ-ten the lyrics-it's not personal.

Q. I suppose you are a sort of social commentator?.11.,--, .........

A. Yes, precisely. I look at life and then comment about it."Mathew & Son" for instance. We need the people wholive lives like that, of course.

Q. Is there anything in your past that has had a lastinginfluence upon you. Something, which has remained asort of back -cloth to what you are doing now?

A. Yes, Folk Music. This has had a tremendous influenceupon me, and continues to. Most folk -songs are, afterall, observations of life.

Q. What was it that made you take up music?A. I just don't know. If I see something being done, then

I have a great need to do it myself. This gives me greatsatisfaction, and is why I sing my own songs mostly.

Q. When you write a song do you have a definite idea atthe outset, or does it just come into your mind? Do yourideas germinate from experience?

A. Yes, well naturally, I have an idea. And if I get veryexcited about it I find the time to work on it. I may beplaying my guitar, be in the street, or just see a wordand keep it in mind. I have my own style but it varies.

Q. Do you feel when observing people that you are a partof them, or do you feel isolated?

A. Oh! I have to feel part of everything I'm involved in,otherwise I wouldn't feel anything at all.

Q. Why did you form your own production company. Wasit for freedom?

A. Yes, I suppose basically it was the desire for freedom.I was a songwriter, then a singer, and now I'm a pro-ducer.

Q. What sort of producer are you. Executive or creative?A. There is the producer who gives the material to the

arranger and leaves it at that. Then there is the producerwho gets right into the mood of the idea of the song, andso becomes very involved in the production. That's thesort I am. There may be other kinds of producer, I don'tknow.

Q. You won't produce your own records, though? -A. No. I would never do that. That's working too close to

the canvas. I have to have someone there to take a goodlook at what is going on. I couldn't do that if I wereproducing myself. That is why Mike Hurst is good for me.

Q. Do you have any other forms of self-expression apartfrom music?

A. Yes. I was at art school for a while. My whole life re-volved around art at one time. I liked to draw cartoons-that's a very immediate art -form.

Q. What was the bridge between your interest in art andthe move over to music?

A. Music has come through much bigger than art ever did.It's more immediate. You can be surrounded by picturesand it's great, but if you have music and pictures . . .

Can you imagine a world without music?Q. Are you conscious of any ultimate direction in your life?

A. No. I play life like a game of chess. First one imove, thenthe next. I move from one point to another. For me thisis the best way, it's more exciting than having every-thing mapped out. And this way you don't fall over some-thing under your nose.

Q. Then you don't have a sense of identification with whatyou are doing?

A. No. I don't. Really, I don't know what I am or what I amnot doing. I think it would be sterile to be any otherway. But at times I get very depressed-so depressedthat I don't even want to wash. But there's always some-thing to be done. An interview like this, for instance.So I have to push myself out of depressions.

Q. Are you affected by trends in Pop music?A. Yes, in a certain way, I am affected by trends. Every

trend stems from a root, and I now regard myself as oneof those roots. I enjoy trends very much, The presentProcol Harum trend absolutely.Success. Has this influenced your life in general, apartfrom giving you a sort of security?No, just the opposite. I worry about what I'm earningnow. Will I be earning the same next year? This hasgiven me a sense of insecurity, and so it makes me fighteven harder. I have also matured tremendously.What were you doing before "I Love My Dog"?Ah yes. Then I was struggling to get my songs to otherpeople. I was just the songwriter then, but no one wasreally interested in my style. The Trems recorded oneof my songs because I was an "in" writer. But all alongI have believed in my songs, in what I have been doing.

R. What about your very early life. Did anything happen then to castthe mould of Cat Stevens?

A. I didn't really have a childhood, and what I did have was rough. Iwas never accepted by the other kids. You know, they all wanted toplay football. or something, and I wanted to draw-I started drawingat a very early age-and consequently, I was always alone.Being alone in your childhood must have made YOU very sensitive,very emotional. Are you? Are YOU easily hurt?Yes, I would say so. If I let people get inside me then they canreally play with me, then I can get hurt. But I am very wary ofpeople and have built a sort of shell around myself. But I like tostudy people, they have become more interesting to me.Would you say that this shell has caused a barrier, that it hasdeprived you of some things that have otherwise "got through" toyou?es

Y, I would. But I'd rather be like that than have these greatlet -downs later on. I worry about things. Probably when I lookback, when I'm about sixty, I'll think, God, why did I worry? Butat the moment it seems worth it.Do you have any preoccupation with age? Do you, as many teenagersdo, dread getting "old"?No. I'm looking forward to it. Then people will come to me foradvice, and I'll be able to sit back and say-"Well . .

What do YOU think of psychedelic freak -outs?You don't really want to ask that question, do you? I think thatreally the people involved in this are lying to themselves. I'drather go to a film, that's more of a psvehedelie hanpenin" Yoo'rereally living something then. If people want to "float around", thenthey can swim.Finally, have you any advice to offer would-be professional song-writers and singers?Yes. Believe in yourself and never give up.

"S N LA FINE EL M0N 0"The story of the Rakes, the English group that's top in ItalyIF YOU ask any Italian pop -

fan something about theRokes, he will tell you:"SONO LA FINE DELMONDO!" In English thatmeans: "They are terrific,they are the end of theworld!"

The Rokes are the bestbeat group in the Italian popworld. They have beenItaly's top selling disc makerson the beat scene for thelast three years. They havefans all over Italy and dur-ing their concerts the audi-ence is always one of thewildest.

But Italy's number one pop -group is English. ShelShapiro, guitar (23) was bornin London; Bobby Posner,bass (22) comes from Har-row; Mike Shepston, drums(23) from Weymouth, andJohny (with one "n" as hewants it), guitar (22) comesfrom Walthamstow.

This will perhaps be ashock for many English holi-daymakers who, coming backfrom their annual two weeksin Italy, bought a Rokes' discas a souvenir!

The story of the Rokes is verysimilar to that of the Beatles. Shel,Bobby and Mike all went to theHarrow County School. As soon asthey finished they decided to trythe high adventure, and so with afourth boy called Malcolm (Johnsat that time was playing in Pariswith a group called the Londines),at the end of '61 they left for Ham-bourg. That was a hard time untila gentleman from Italy invited themfor a four -week tour in Italy. Mal-colm, may be fed -up with one meala day, came back to England andJohny, casual friend of the group,took his place. Their first appear-ance in Italy was at the AlcyoneTheatre in Milan. Teddy Reno, thebest Italian talent -scout and alsoRita Pavone's manager, liked themand invited them to participate ina national contest for unknown popsingers, the same that Rita Pavonewon the year before. Of coursethey won. It was August '63 andthey recorded "UN' ANIMA PURA",an old melodic Italian song, but

with Shel's special beat arrange-ment. A beautiful song that leftthe top twenty in the summer of'65. Two years since it was re-leased!

But the lucky moment for theRokes arrived in the February of'65, when in Rome the first everbeat club was opened. The PiperClub.

The Club, wanted by all theyoung ones of Italy. had a smash-ing success. That was the first vic-tory of the young generation againstthe old.

The Rokes who played in the"Piper" for the first two monthsbecame suddenly the heroes, thesymbols for the teenagers. Theirsecond single "C'E UNA STRANAESPRESSIONE" went straight inthe top twenty and so did all theirother singles. Last year they hadtwo strong number ones and theircurrent single "BISOGNA SAPERPERDERE" is now at 4th place.With this song they entered thefinals of the S. REMO FESTIVAL.Something that the Hollies, anotherEnglish group in the Festival,could not achieve.

Following their Piper Club successthey co-starred in a film with RitaPavone "LA FIGLIA AMERICANA."They were wanted all over Italyand are still all booked up until

spring of '68.Last summer they came first

place with the Equipe 84, an Italiangroup, in a big tour contest allaround Italy. Thus creating adivision between the fans similarto that of the Rolling Stones andthe Beatles in England.

Shel, or "super"-Shel as theItalian fans call him, for his 6 ft.5 in., Mike, Johny and Bob live inRome in spectacular villas orluxurious apartments. They alreadyspeak the dialect of Rome, whichis like the English cockney, andfor this they are liked more. Fastcars are their passion. Shel has aMERCEDES 250, Bob a LANrIASports, Johny an ALFA ROMEOG.T., and Mike a FERRARI onorder and a little red 500 FIATfor the parking problem in Rome.

They don't dress in fancy clothes,but serious and modern suits,English -Continental style. Theyappear always very smart, assmart as their playing! They aremasters on arranging top interna-tional hits for their Italian versions,using their personal touch of folk -heat -blues.

Shel and Mike wrote nearly allthe songs for their 3 L.P.s whichare top of the beat field sales.

I think the record can make thecharts. If so we'll see the Rokessoon and the English public willsuddenly realise that "0 Sole Mio"is forgotten in Italy.

I talked to the boys ontheir recent trip to England- but only leader FRE-NANDO ARBEX could speakEnglish to a certain extentand he was helped by hiswife CHERRY. Cherry isEnglish and met Fernandowhen she was in Spain asJULIE CHRISTIE's under-study filming "Dr. Zhivago."

The group are likely to re-turn here in September andFernando comments: "Britainis great for music, it is thedoor to all the World. Wehave had eight No. 1 hits inSpain, a No. 3 hit in Franceand a No. 7 hit in Italy -but we want to record all oursongs in English as it is moreof an International language.In Britain the people under-stand a lot more, they aremore professional. You havebetter studios, musicians andgroups. We feel very happyhere. In Spain we have threegood television programmesfor pop promotion. 'Satur-day Night' is the best.

WHEN Trevor Peacockwrote "Mrs. Brown

You've Got A Lovely Daugh-ter" the song sold in its mil-lions around the World -and no doubt took pride ofplace in the record collec-tions of any Brown familywho had an attractivedaughter. But the story doesnot end there - in fact itseems that there's a far moreattractive girl around, be-cause in the film version of"Mrs. Brown", Judy Browndoesn't get her man.

HERMAN'S HERMITS havebeen filming at SheppertonStudios since May 1 andLEK LECKENBY tells me:"Originally we were supposedto spend two weeks in Man-chester but they've cut outthe locations there and it'llall be filmed in the studiosand around London. The filmis supposed to take ten weeksto complete, but if we haven'tfinished it by July 10 we'llbe off on our Americantour and will have to comeback and complete it in Sep-tember.

Disillusioned, we all goback to Manchester and Peteends up with his original girlfriend (Sheila White).

Mona Washbourne play Mr.and Mrs. Brown and LancePercival is a tramp who ap-pears all through the picture.

"To me, every scene's funny, it'sa musical comedy. I think we comeout funny. Peter has a lot of graftto do, alt the work - and I'm im-pressed by the way he's doing it.

"We've all got canvas seats withour names on them and the kingtrick is to hold a lighter under aseat while someone's sitting in it.Karl's kingpin at that. He uses a bigstick, about six foot long, so hedoesn't get hammered when he'splayed the trick on somebody. Thefirst time it was done it happened toBarry. Afterwards he sat down fora while and I could see him think-ing. Then he tried it on Karl - butKarl wasn't sitting on a canvas seatand the whole thing caught fire. Itwas the Sound Engineer's seat andhe didn't like it.

"We have practical jokes everyday now - that was the start of it.When we were in Covent Garden

everyone was throwing gooseberriesat each other and the director wasdoing his nut. Fruit was flyingeverywhere. But it was taken ingood fun because everyone in theunit are great guys and easy to gelon with.

SPAGHETTI-The worst part of the film for us

takes place when we go back toPete's house and find the trampthere and eat spaghetti. The stuffwas uneatable and we had to lookas if we were enjoying it. EspeciallyKarl who was supposed to be aglutton. We had to do this sceneseveral times and it was dreadful.Once, when they were doing aclose-up of Barry eating it he sud-denly ran off the set and puked.We asked them for different spa-ghetti and though they changed it,it was the same brand.

Some Italian film producer musthave left it behind. They must havehad it in the prop room for tenyears. Spaghetti was one of myfavourites, but I've been put off itfor life now. Poor old Lance Perci-val, he had about ten scenes withthe stuff.

CARNABY ST."As the tramp he wears Mod gear

Carnaby Street stuff, all ripped up.I saw him in the canteen and hewas putting soup on his jacket andubbing it in to make it more

tramplike."Sounds as if the film will be fun.

Incidentally, Lek mentioned thatwhen The Hermits went for a Medi-cal because of the film's Insurance- Stanley Holloway was fitter thanall five boys - and he's over 73!

HAVE you noticed the veryexciting and encouraging

trend in pop song lyrics?What's brought it home tome is the week I've just spentrecording Spencer Davis andhis new group. I was veryimpressed with the kind oflyrics they are writing.There's much more depththan in the pop songs of afew years back.

It's pretty obvious that wehave to thank the Beatles forstarting the trend towardssong -stories that have almostan "Alice In Wonderland"ring to them. Graham Nashof The Hollies is another popstar who seems to be de-veloping a gift for writingthis kind of material. For ex-ample, there's "Lullaby ToTim" on their new album"Evolution".

I've got a feeling that inthe next couple of years someof the pop songs on albumswill last five minutes or

AIR & THE 'ALICE IN

WONDERLAND' WORDSlonger. I think they're goingto be developed much moreas pieces of music and asstories. The standard -lengthpop song - suitable forsingles - sounds more likean advertising jingle or atrailer for a film when youhear it on an album. We'vegot to develop from thinkingalways in terms of 21minutes. The aim will be toenable the listener to sitdown and really enjoy a num-ber because it has so manydifferent dimensions.

In America the LP andsingles' markets are almostentirely separate. It's theyoungest kids, with limitedpocket money, who buy thesingles. But most of the al-bums are bought by collegekids between the ages of 15and 21. And this album mar-ket is unlikely to be satisfiedwith six "singles" on eachside of an LP.

There's no doubt that theaverage level of songs hasbeen getting better for along time. The pop songs of30 or 40 years ago were very,very simple, made for alargely uneducated public.When people get better edu-cation they are able to appre-ciate better pop songs. And

I'm sure the general level ofeducation is much higher.The Thirties' songs were gen-erally better than the Twen-ties. The level probably wentdown in the Forties, a resultof the war.

I guess each era has its ownmusical scene and there's usually. areason for it. The fantasy scene oftoday's pop must be a reflectionof the state of the world. Wartroubles - in Vietnam. Middle Eastand so on - make people want toescape into fantasy because theydon't like what they see in theworld. And, thanks to television,they do see what's happening. Onceupon a time less educated peopledidn't care what was happening inthe rest of the world so long as itdidn't touch them. Nowadays wecan't get away: pictures of Indiansstarving and men dying in Vietnamare coming into our homes. Un-doubtedly, there's a crying needfor fantasy to brighten things upfor us.

Same thing is happening withclothes. Groups are wearing fan-tastic gear and it almost looks asthough they are going all-out tolook scruffy! Ten years ago, kidscouldn't get or afford good clothesand so they wanted to see theirstars smartly dressed. Now there'san abundance of smart clothingquite cheap so they prefer to seethe stars looking way out. I reckonthat people require their enter-tainers to be the opposite, in someways, to themselves. If you lead ahumdrum life you need very excit-ing pop music. If you lead anexciting life you need to relax withquiet, subtle pop.

E R T A INLY the best -produced pop -music presentation I've everseen-that's a summary of the Monkees in concert at the

massive 10,000 -seater Wembley Pool. Constant changes of costumefrom the boys, with colour stills and movies shown on a hugescreen, and a tremendous amount of verve and apparent improvisa-tion from the four boys.

But the noise from the fans was so tremendous that it wasvirtually impossible to judge exactly how good they are on theirinstruments. Even so, Mike Nesmith produced some frantic guitarsounds; Micky Dolenz hammered his drum kit with total abandon;Davy used maraccas, tambourine, mini -organ and (once) bass;Peter Tork moved from bass to organ and back again. Vocally theboys were fine-in movement and style and sheer dynamicpresentation.

Their individual solo spots featured Peter on "Banjo CrippleCreek"; Mike on "Can't Judge A Book By The Cover"; Davy on"Gonna Build A Mountain" which built the highest scream fre-quency; Micky on his James Brown take -off on "I Gotta Woman".They also tackled: "I'm A Believer", "Last Train To Clarksville","You May Just Be The One", "Auntie Grizelda", "I Wanna BeFree", "Sweet Young Thing", "Girl I Knew Somewhere", "Mary

Mary", "Alternate Title", "Stepping Stone". A fantastic finale,powering sound and excitement, then a quick good -night and theboys were away into the depths of the hall-taking no bows.

The Monkees work with an air of being unsure of what comesnext, but it's obviously highly -planned. Micky expended the mostenergy, but Davy remains a clear-cut favourite with the fans ...certainly on the last show Sunday.

They worked non-stop for well over an hour-which also makesit the longest bill -topping performance I've yet seen.

It took me half -an -hour to get back full hearing in my ears.And it was certainly a show to remember. The Monkees give,in every way, absolute value for money.

tachioed, a blackwide -brimmed haton his head, wear-ing a long, colour-ful jacket (like a

smoking jacket) which he'dbought at "Granny Takes ATrip" - STEVIE MARRIOTTlooked happier than I'd everseen him. We were in ANDYOLDHAM'S luxurious office sit-ting around a marble toppedtable. Ian was reading a maga-zine and Plonk had justdropped into the next officeto talk to TONY CALDER. Oneof several reasons for hisbouncy behaviour began toerupt all around me in fullstereophonic sound - THESMALL FACES' new albumwhich was released on June 23.

Their first Immediate L.P.and most certainly their best.Progressive, rippling withideas, the album will come asa delight to all Small Facefans. "We can try all sorts ofthings now," said Steve. "Be-fore we were told 'now you

can't do that' - this is realprogression for us."

Plonk joined us and pointedout that the session was A&R'dby themselves and explainedthe use of various instrumentsand sounds on a track -by -trackrundown on the album, whichalso showcases 14 examples offirst class Small Face composi-tions. He said "A record is arecord. It's different from a'live' show and that. We weretrying to make each track adifferent sound. We felt thatif it blows our mind it mustdo the same for a few otherpeople."

Steve said, "We used to makerecords strictly for the public.We were told what to do. Nowthis is US, if anyone's goofingit's us. But we believe we knowwhat the kids want becausewe're kids ourselves. It's quitea landmark. We could go oneway, we could go the other-but at least we're happy."

"It's great," said Steve, "allnice people going about theContinent, everyone having anice time as well as working.Continental wise it's just be-ginning to happen for us sincewe joined the new label. Thereis so much pushing, so manypeople rooting for us. We'rehaving things we've never hadbefore and we're being recog-nised in these countries as abig group.

"This whole change to Im-mediate and to ROBERT WACEas our manager has given usfreedom of mind. When theorganisation is good you've gotto be happy. I dig being happyand it's only in the last twomonths that we have beenhappy. No one is trying to sup-press us and we have nicepeople around us. If you canbe happy you're laughing, youcan get rid of hang-ups. Theyoung people in this businessknow what we want - they're -kids themselves. It's not likesome old guys who are living40 years in the past. This busi-ness is getting lots of youngpeople with ideas in it thesedays, particularly cleverrecord producers."

The aura of gaiety seemedto be intoxicating and I askedthem whether they playedpractical jokes on each other."Practical jokes? Last night wewere playing submarines in thebathroom. You've gotta haveboners. We never play jokeson each other. When we havea laugh it's all four of uslaughing."

Terry -`Why I didn'tjoin Spencer Davis'

YOU would think that a

17 - year - old like TerryReid, vocalist with Peter Jay'sJaywalkers, would jump atthe chance to join a nameoutfit like The Spencer DavisGroup, following in the illus-trious footsteps of StevieWinwood. But Terry turneddown Spencer's offer lastweek after a great deal ofspeculation. He is happy withthe start given to him byPeter Jay and The Jay-walkers, with whom he hasbuilt up a good following, andintends to further his careerwith them.

In this exclusive interview,he told the RM: "NaturallyI was very flattered and in-deed tempted by Spencer'soffer to succeed Stevie Win -wood, but after much thoughtI decided against it.

"Following a man ofStevie's talent wouldn't beeasy to begin with, and mystyle is nothing like his any-way. I thought that withoutStevie, Spencer would haveto make a dramatic change.If I did join them, peoplewould immediately compareme with Stevie which wouldbe unfair on me and thegroup.

"Look at the testing timeMike D'Abo had when tryingto follow Paul Jones withManfred Mann. Sure heweathered the storm, but itwas no picnic, and that kindof scene isn't for me. I maynot have been so lucky."

"I saw Spencer's new bandat the Marquee recently ontheir first real big Londongig and they weren't exactlygiven a hero's welcome," saysTerry. "I believe the publicshould give them time tosettle down before judging asthey are extremely capable

musicians and have a toughtask ahead in re:establishingthe group without Stevie. I'msure they'll succeed."

Meanwhile Terry and TheJaywalkers are doing verynicely right now. Last weekthey appeared at the Bratis-lava Pop Festival and willshortly be making a film.Peter Jay has written a scriptabout the trials of a teen-ager entering the pop world,

and will produce the film,which features Terry in themain role. Shooting begins inthe Autumn and co-stars arecurrently being sought.

The group's next recordwill be made early nextmonth for August release,and having heard some titlesfrom which it will be chosen,I wouldn't be at all surprisedto see it high in the charts.

A HIT -AFTER SIX YEARS OF SOULI REMEMBER about six

years ago, when I firststarted working at the ItecordMirror receiving two copiesof a certain record. The uiscin question was called "EveryBeat Of My Heart" by agroup called the Pips andfunnily enough both copiesof the record were on labelswhich no longer exist - theBritish one was on Top Rank(remember that?) and theAmerican one was on VeeJay.

It was a really lovelyrecord-a slow, delicate soulballad with a spine -tinglingvocal by a girl, and the songhad been written by JohnnyOtis-the same man who tenyears ago had a number onerecord in Britain with a re-

Not much was heard of thePips after that. I read inAmerican trade mags thattheir name had been changedto Gladys Knight And ThePips (she was the leadsinger on "Every Beat Of MyHeart") and some more re-cords had been issued there,but not here. Among thosewere "Letter Full Of Tears"-which Britain's Billy Furyrecorded and took into thetop twenty-and "Operator".

These numbers were re-leased later by the Sue labelunder the guidance of GuyStevens. However it wasseveral years before Gladysand the Pips made theAmerican charts in a bigway. And the disc they didit with was "Giving Up" -another beautiful soul sound- this time a Spanish -flavoured item which wasquickly issued here on State-side, and covered by severalBritish girl singers. But allto no avail.

A few other singles fol-lowed. Then - nothing. Butrecently came the news thatGladys had joined Tamla-Motown. A lot of her earlieradmirers must have won-dered whether Gladys' indi-vidual sound and voice wouldbe submerged under theoverpowering Tamla soundThe answer was NO-for thefirst disc was "Just Walk InMy Shoes"/"Stepping CloserTo My Heart", which wasfollowed by the exciting"Take Me In Your Arms AndLove Me" giving Gladys andthe Pips their first Britishchart success in six years.

Here's some backgroundon Gladys Knight And ThePips. They're a family group.The Pips comprise MeraldKnight who is Gladys'brother, and her two cousinsWilliam Guest and EdwardPattern. They originally sangtogether in High School intheir native Georgia and

GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS-an interesting group.then Gladys won first prizein a TV talent show-the TedMack Amateur Hour, whichis one of America's equiva-lent programmes to HughieGreen's "OpportunityKnocks". Before that the girlwho had been trained inclassical singing since theage of seven was performingat recitals in New York,Florida and throughout theSouthern States. But despiteall h e r success Gladys'mother insisted that she re-turn to her schooling andpursue her chosen career ata later date.

Later the Pips were con-tracted to Vee Jay, wherethey cut their first great hit

and since then they havebuilt up a reputation as oneof the most individual -sound-ing groups on the soul scene.Live, the Pips are reputed tobe very good. They have notonly triumphed in the States-but in Bermuda's famous"Forty Thieves" club theyare remembered as one ofthe best acts.

In their spare time-whenthey get any-the Pips ridebicycles. Which must provesomething . . . I just hopethat with their British suc-cess someone will think ofbringing them here - theyshould be worth watching.

WHETHER TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD'S fans will like himall South Seas, I don't know-but his latest album is"Aloha" on Capitol T 2681, and contains some standard tuneful

Hawaiian items. From the distaff side-ERNESTINE ANDERS;,SON and a beautiful record just called "Ernestine Anderson"which contains some familiar, but not corny, numbers. OnColumbia SX 6145.

For Derek Flint fans, there's "In Like Flint"-the soundtrackfrom the latest "Our Man Flint" epic spy film. The music is ascolourful as the films-on Stateside SL 10207. But if it's Africanrhythms you prefer, then "African Addio" on United ArtistsULP 1172 is your cup of tea-and RIZ ORTOLANI is responsiblefor the tunes and conducting the orchestra. A good cover pic too

. . from another spy film-this time the new James Bond epic,"You Only Live Twice". Nancy sings on this one, and JOHNBARRY composes and conducts on this exciting and compulsiverecord. The United Artists' film, "The Whisperers", is OK, andthe soundtrack, another JOHN BARRY item, is exquisite. It reallyis good and is on United Artists ULP 1168.

The songs of Frederick E. Day will appeal to many Mums andDads, and TOMMY SANDERSON directs the music on this LP ofvarious artistes singing his numbers, called "Nearest And Dearest"on Columbia SX 6151. The popular number "Sunrise, Sunset"from "The Fiddler On The Roof" show is the headliner on a newLP by MANUEL AND THE MUSIC OF THE MOUNTAINS-onColumbia SX 6139-style as per usual, with some good tunes.THE JOHNNY SCOTT QUINTET and "Communication" is onColumbia SX 6149 and it sounds like a very cool record-so isorganist JERRY ALLEN'S "Sump'n Else" on Columbia SX 6150which is a record that will appeal to musicians, as well as thegeneral public. FRANCK POURCEL's "The Sound Of Magic" onStudio 2 Stereo TWO 158 is a collection of some evergreen moviethemes, beautifully arranged and played. Comes over well instereo.

There'sa choral sound, touches of violentguitar, and a finale which for megoes on a bit but is good-humouredand includes snatches of "AmericanPatrol", "She Loves You", etc, etc.Very catchy and involving a worldmessage. Flip: Some will preferthis, oddly enough -and it is oddenough. Interesting sounds all theway.

To Love Somebody; Close AnotherDoor (Polydor 56178). Nice stringson this one, a delicate and almostjerky number from the "MiningDisaster" team. This one is veryun-Beatle-ish and is, in the longrun, a better song. The lyric isnice and the lead singer handlesit well. "13" side unavailable atpress time.

RUPERT'S PEOPLEReflections Of Charles Brown;

Hold On (Columbia DB 8226). Firstthoughts on this are that the groupare doing a Procol Harum. Butin fact the tempo Is similar, butthe organ work Isn't so dominant,bluesy guitar taking over. Song isoriginal, the singer has an expres-sive voice. Could happen. Flip isfaster, a routine beater with goodvocal work again.

THE WHOThe Last Time; Under My

Thumb (Track 604006). Top grouppays tribute to the Rolling Stonesby recording two Jagger -Richardnumbers and sub -titling the disc:"In Support Of Mick Jagger andKeith Richard". I think the topdeck is one of the best Stone-iansongs and I like the treatment here- different, yet sympatheticallydone. Strong beat and powerful all-round. A hit. Flip: Rather moreroutine, yet also indelibly stamped"Who".

GORDIE LIGHTFOOT: Adios, Adios; Is My Baby Blue Tonight (PresidentPT 138). A typical Jim Reeves type country affair with country piano backingthings up. Corny - but as it seems, commercial. Certainly well performed.* * *

DEBRAH AIRE: What The World Needs Now Is Love; This Land OfMine (Polydor 56180). Yet another version of this Bacharach-David song -this one is breathy, OK really, but if Jackie De Shannon and Mad didn't,then I can't see Debrah making it. * * *

THE ROYAL GUARDSMEN: The Airplane Song (My Airplane); OM (State-side SS 2035). Personally, I think this is their best to date - it's a light-hearted. catchy little beat ballad with a clever lyric. Could make it, but itisn't as gimmicky as their hit. * * *

THE CREATION: If I Stay Too Long; Nightmares (Polydor 56177). Aslow -burning powerful effort here, a Shel Talmy production with nice res-trained but powerful vocal. Could well be a hit with enough exposure.* * *

JACKIE LYNTON: Answer Me; I Never Loved A Girl Like You (ColumbiaDB 8224). .1ackie's version of the oldie is very well sung - a builder to afine climax. Could pull sales on either oldie or vocal merits. Worth listeningto. * * * *

DORIAN GRAY: Behind The Tear; Walking Down A Backstreet (Parlo-phone R 5612). C. & W. item here, and a Ned Miller number which could dothings for Dorian. It's well -performed, catchy, and could garner currentcowboy fad sales. Wilde about it (Sorry Roger!). * * *

THE HUMAN BEANS: Morning Dew; It's A Wonder (Columbia DB 8230).A version of the folk song currently doing things for Episode 6. This onemay be too late -but it's not a bad version of the haunting, commercial beatballad. * * *

And CURLY PUT-MAN's "My Elusive Dreams" maynot be too commercial, but it's ahaunting, plaintive adult balladwhich could do OK in C & W mar-kets. (On HMV POP 1599). BRIANFAHEY's "The Plank" is a merrylittle theme from the film of thesame name (Parlophone R 5615),while MIKE AND BERNIE WIN-TERS have a neo-comedy item in"Smother Me With Moondust AndElusive Strawberries" - could clickwith their fans - on CBS 2844.

ROGER BLOOM'S HAMMER havea bouncy beat ballad in the shapeof. "Polly Pan" (CBS 2848). but it'snot as distinctive as it needs to befor chart success. Another theme -"Champion House Theme" fromthe EL-EC-TRICIANS (Columbia DB8228) is a must for the devotees ofthe BBC -TV series. MARY Mc-CARTHY's "The Folk I Love" is astrident sort of square - dancy beatballad with lots of bouncy appeal(CBS 2832). If you like comedysongs about Bullfights and Matadors.then DEANO's "What's The MatterWith The Matador?" is for you. Butit's cheeriness could make it click- on Columbia DB 8233. BOBBY SOLO'S "Have I Told YouLately That I Love You" 'is a finereading of the evergreen, maybe abit corny for chart impact but finelistening nevertheless (Page OnePOE 029). And "Make Mine Music"by THE RUSH is cheerful and gay,Perhaps a little outdated thoughlyric -wise. (Decca F 12635). If youfancy terrible pun names for agroup - try THE EYE -FULLTOWER (squirm) and their "HowAbout Me" on Polydor 56734 - agentle old twenties -style beat ballad.An Australian hit in the shape of"Lady" by JOHNNY YOUNG isissued on Decca F 22636 - it's aninsistent beat ballad with youngsounds. But it's one of thebest records this week - an oldFalcons side with Wilson sing-ing lead and an incredible beat-different and rhythmic and veryvery dancable - it's unfortun-ate that this proves how muchbetter Wilson was then. Flip isa soul -laden item which is asgood, in its own way, as sideone. Every soul fan shouldrush out and buy this double -sided goodie.

KELLY BROTHERS: Hanging In Here; You Put Your Touch OnMe (President PT 143). A Gospel -tinged, tuneful soul effort withsax backdrop and a bit of a Sam and Dave approach. * * *

THE ATTA('K: Washington Square; ('lease Phil Spector (Philips BF 1585).Quite a lively, almost quietly frantic thing, with a nice feel to it, The num-ber develops and the group get a powerful, yet controlled sound. The flip isamusing. * * *

ROBERT GOULET: My Love Forgive Me; World Of Clowns (CBS 2845).Amore, Scusami - a familiar big -voiced treatment of the number withRobert giving his all. I suppose this could be a chart hit, but the song ismaybe a bit too familiar. * * *

MEL TORME: Lover's Roulette; I Remember Suzanne (CBS 2857). Agentle, lilting, well -sung ballad from Mel, who comes across well on thisone. Lyric is perhaps a little hit too contrived but the sound is pleasing.

UNCHEON with twomembers of The PinkFloyd - Roger Watersand Nick Mason - plustheir two managers(Andrew King and PeterJenner) got off to a bit

of a tricky start when I had to confess thatI'd never been able to summon the courageto go and catch their act at one of thepsychedelic clubs in London where theFloyd cater to the musical and visual needsof the freak -out set. My excuse for thisoutrageous neglect was that the noise inthese joints was too painful for my not -especially -delicate eardrums. Their forcefulreplies concentrated on the assertion thatcertain of their effects can only be achievedvia aural assault.

Anyway, there's little doubt about theirprofessional cunning and competence. Itdoesn't look as though they'll be returningto the pursuits they trained for - Nick,Roger and Rick Wright were architecturestudents at the Regent Street Polytechnic,Syd Barrett studied painting at CamberwellArt School. "Mind you," pointed out Nick,"the best chance for an architect to findclients is in show business. I'm always onthe look -out for someone who has half amillion pounds to spare and wants me todesign him a house. Please tell the readersof the RM to get in touch with me if theyare affluent enough to need my services!"

It's not just in London, where they enjoya cultist appeal, that the P.F. are pleasingaudiences. Even in areas where psychedeliahas no clear meaning they are finding betterand better receptions. However, their record-ing career has not so far flowered beauti-fully. Manager Andrew spent some timeexplaining that it was not in their bestinterests, in the long run, to have had ahit with their first disc. It sounded fairlyconvincing as he expressed great sympathywith the dilemma of Procol Harum whostruck it rich first time and must, Andrewfigured, be worried stiff about their follow-up. (My own impression is that ProcolHarum are too busy worrying about whatcars, houses, stocks and bonds to invest in.)

The Pink Floyd"even fans don't always understandwhat we're trying to do""Arnold Layne," said Andrew, was destinedto have a minority appeal. At which co-manager Peter observed: "It certainly ful-filled its destiny!"

Then we discussed the chances of theirnew "Emily". Roger said: "When you recorda single you are not interested in showingthe" public how far you've advanced sincethe last record. You've got to please therecording company, apart from any otherconsideration, otherwise they won't releaseit."

They have just finished work on their firstLP which is about to be rushed cut. But,of course, no recording can indicate thefull scope of this group. Brave, rugged -earedacquaintances who have caught the PinkFloyd in action tell me their stage presenta-tion is extremely exciting, thanks to theiringenious lighting and stereo effects.

"You should come to one of our concerts,"suggested Nick. "In clubs we play louder,partly to hold attention. In concerts, whereeverybody is seated and, we hope, seriouslylistening, we perform with greater range.We use a box, called the Azimuth Co-ordin-ator, which was designed for us and enablesus to throw stereo effects around a hall."

They gave a sell-out concert at the QueenElizabeth Hall in London. They lavished somuch care and money on the show thatthey wound up out of pocket on it. Theyalso got banned from holding future showsthere because they threw flowers! No kid-

ding: "It seems we contravened a regulation,"explained Roger. "We were told that peoplemight have slipped on the flowers we threwinto the audience." (Which conjures up apretty image of concertgoers tripping overflowers.)

The show itself was by all accounts agreat artistic success. It was a very mixedaudience that included quite a few olderpeople, apart from the artistes' parents.Said Roger: "Someone I know was sittingnext to two old ladies who sat there still andsilent until the interval. Then one turnedto her friend and said 'They're very good,aren't they'?"

Such praise, especially from the elderly,is not exactly an automatic response for agroup that tries to be original and adventur-ous. "Even fans don't always understandwhat we're trying to do," sighed Roger. "Wehad some photographs done, only in blackand white, using a 'psychedelic' slide super-imposed on us. Some fans who'd writtenasking for pictures wrote back wonderingif we'd spilt something on the pictures. Theyreally believed something had gone wrong."

They admit they can't help being broughtdown on occasion when they meet withhostility. "The Pink Floyd are a very goodtarget - though we always get along wellwith promoters who have a professionalapproach."

"But we do run into those who say 'What-ever it is, it isn't music'," added Peter.
