Workshop, Pre-Programme Questionnaire, Post-Programme

Questionnaire

The outcome of the programme is examined and confirmed by two different

ways, Questionnaires (Pre-Programme Questionnaire and Post-Programme

Questionnaire) and Workshop.

Workshop

Workshop is conducted at the end of Group Programme in each prefecture. All

the students are advised to keep daily findings on (1) Japan (2) ASEAN

countries. Reflecting on their experiences, they review their daily findings for the

Workshop. At the workshop, they share and discuss their findings with other

group members. After the workshop, the discussion is summarized in a

workshop report and presented at a workshop presentation.

There are 3 objectives of the workshop;

(1) To make the students clearly recognize their findings by putting them into

words and sharing them with other students of the group.

(2) To deepen their understandings by discussing the backgrounds, comparing

them with those in their own country, and thinking how they can be adopted.

(3) To summarize the discussion and the conclusion in a workshop report of the

group.

All the workshop reports and some comments of the students from the

Post-Programme Questionnaire are shown in the following pages.

Workshop Report

ASEAN 10 + Timor-Leste Joint Programme: Group【HOKKAIDO】 Date: 2009/4/21

Findings about Japan

(Topic: Work Ethics)

Work ethics for Japanese people is really important. It is the reason why they highly value time and are

always punctual. Japanese are taught to be punctual at an early aged and is trained at school and at home.

While in some ASEAN countries we have agreed that sometimes we lack punctuality and become insensitive

of time. In Japan everyone is well disciplined and organized. These characteristics of the Japanese people

should serve as an inspiration for all of us to follow for a positive and progressive future of our countries.

(Topic:Personality)

During our home stay experience we have live the Japanese way of life for 1 day and we can say that they

were really good and kind. Seata from Laos have found out that they, Japanese people, would give more

than what you’ve asked for and also if don’t asked for it. Moreover Japanese people have Mottainai spirit.

They don’t waste things. As an example, Lar of Laos received a camera during his home stay as a present

which his host family does not use anymore. And this show how generous and sincere they are for caring for

their environment. Another characteristic of Japanese people is that they were so hospitable. They would

prepare a banquet for everybody and would not eat until all guests have already had their food. It’s

something similar for countries like Thailand, Philippines, and Laos. Moreover, Filipinos, Lao, Thais,

Indonesians, Malays, Vietnamese, Bruneians are helping and giving hand for one another most especially

for those people in need. In the Philippines, it is famously called as “bayanihan.” Another is that ASEAN

countries including Japan are very helpful. When you approach them they’ll stop and help you out even

though their rushing for work.

Findings about ASEAN countries

(Topic:We are all ASIAN People)

Most of the ASEAN Countries have nearly the same tradition and customs. Moreover we also have our

differences. For example in Thailand when they see each other, they will bow. But in Brunei, they shake

hands. Nevertheless, most of us, Filipinos, Lao, Indonesians, Bruneians, and Malays use the same way of

respecting elders by putting hands on ones forehead. In addition, we also have similarities in bathing for we

experience bathing using a dipper and a pale of water in our own countries.

Conclusion

(Topic: Work Ethics)

To make change, it should start from us, we student ambassadors. We should always put ourselves in the

shoes of other people. Moreover, we should not be afraid of doing what is right. We should all serve as the

leaders for others to follow. And we think that by doing these steps people can do the same change among

themselves.

(Topic:Personality)

As conclusion, if one would indulge oneself to the core of the ASEAN countries customs and traditions, one

could see that all are warm, kind, hospitable and friendly just like Japanese people here in Hokkaido.

(Topic:We are all ASIAN People)

However, although we have differences in religious beliefs for some were Muslims, Buddhist and Christians;

this does not hinder us from working together harmoniously. Though sometimes it is hard to communicate

and understand each other we shared common ground that is : We are all ASIAN People and we are born to

be friends.

Workshop Report

ASEAN 10 + Timor-Leste Joint Programme: Group【MIYAGI】 Date: 2009/4/21

Findings about Japan

(Topic: CLEAN and MODERN)

During our stay in Japan, we noticed that Japan is the country that has clean surroundings

and a modern environment. For instance, Japanese separate garbage into many kinds.

That makes public cleaner. About its modernity, they have advanced machines as well as

technology (Shinkansen, …).

(Topic: POLITE and PUNCTUAL)

Japanese show the politeness by bowing, their heads when greetings and the way they

welcome us even if we are strangers. And, they also respect the old people. Thus, one of

the best characteristics of Japanese is being punctual. They always have an exact

schedule and do on time.

Findings about ASEAN countries

(Topic: FRIENDLY)

Even though we come from 10 different countries, we - members of Miyagi group – always

help each other in many ways. For example, we lend things, help to carry luggage, etc.

Our language has many distinctions but we all try our best to establish, the friendship

between each member. We all hope that our friendship will last forever.

(Topic: INTELLIGENT)

After a six-day trip in Miyagi, we found that ASEAN students are very intelligent. They can

greet by Japanese after a two-hour course; and they can understand each other’s culture

very fast.

Conclusion

Thanks to JENESYS Programme, we have a chance to know about ASEAN and Japan,

have a chance to make friend from many countries. We will keep this friendship last forever

and when we grow up, we will cooperate with others in terms of economy and cultural

exchange, etc.

Conclusion 1) How JENESYS can help us? Form speaking terms Share ideas/experiences (among Osaka group, friends at home, Japanese people) Mutual understanding Improving skills (communication skills, organizing events) 2) How ASEAN 10 + Timor Leste could unite ? Introducing proper English at an early age More government funded exchange programme Easier regional transportation Smoother exchange of goods & services The way we think of Japan differs before and after experiencing life in Japan. The people here have a lot of characteristics which could really turn the frowns on people’s faces upside down. We always felt warm whenever we were around them. The people here are also enrooted to their own culture where it seems as if they never forget about their own origins. Their culture is also very unique where by just looking at it, you will straightly recognize that it is Japan. The technology here is also very advanced when compared to each and every one of the ASEAN countries. ASEAN countries on the other hand are very interesting. One of the factors that really help us to unite is our languages. When we have a way to communicate with each other easily, we will not have many problems with each other. Besides, the different cultures from each country actually attracted one other to know each other more deeply. The participants even showed a positive sign during the whole programme where they were very energetic, cooperative, friendly, and so on. In conclusion, the programme actually helped us in lots of ways to improve our countries. We even learned how to interact with participants from other countries in such a good manner. However, it would be such a shame for this programme to end at such a happy time. But we would still cherish the memorable experience here in Japan no matter how far we are from Japan.

and their beautiful environment. Our stay in Japan has been a memorable and unforgettable

experience for every one of us. We are hoping to return in the near future. On the other hand,

the delegates from ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste, we discovered each other’s

uniqueness, differences and similarities, We have enjoyed each other’s company and with

this, the bonding that we have shared has been a proof that we can be good neighboring

countries here in South East Asia. Also, we are equally proud with all our interesting culture

which made us see in each and every one of the ASEAN and Timor-Leste Delegate that we

are preserving and enriching our own cultures and traditions. Lastly, we have seen and

shown the goal of this programme that is to foster harmonious relationship with each other

and to be the youth ambassadors for Asia’s stalwart solidarity.

After the programme, the group proposes to:

Maintain our relationship by utilizing today’s technologies such as internet and

computers

Provide an ASEAN dictionary for we have realized our common language and in order

to have an easy communication with each other

Propose a follow-up programme after JENESYS that will be a good venue for

information dissemination of other international exchange for the development of the

harmonious relationship of ASEAN Countries, Japan and other countries too.

Propose an official ASEAN Youth Cultural Website that will promote ASEAN’s rich

culture that will be handled and monitored by the Youth Ambassadors

Findings about Japan

- Japan is a clean country with high technology.

- Very detailed country in terms of tradition, culture and the use of modern technology.

`- Japanese people are concerned with their environment, thus they ride bicycles to get

around and use cars only when necessary.

These things make Japan a productive country, and serves as a good example to other

languages.

- Common concern about the importance of agriculture.

‘- Easy to make friends and cooperate with one another.

essential characteristic for this programme and also for a brighter future.

Conclusion

Thus we can try to learn and use the good moral values from Japan and other countries and

hence improve the citizens’ attitude in our own countries. This would be a good start in

forming a peaceful and productive community, to create a new generation that is hard

working, disciplined, and where people cooperate easily with each other as a good team for a

better future.

ASEAN 10 + Timor-Leste students’ comments

I am happy and thankful for this programme. I have experienced and learned a lot

from the programme, such as how we understand each other, how we respect

others, how we cooperate with others, and how we help each other to achieve our

goals. My stereo-type image to Japan had been wiped out and I have obtained a

good image to it as well. Furthermore I could deepen my knowledge and

understanding toward ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste through interaction with

the students from those countries during the programme. I have much more to say

but I just can not express with words. I just thank Japanese government for giving

me such a wonderful opportunity of experience and learning. I can not pay back at

the moment, but I am eternally grateful. (Indonesia, Hyogo G)

I am so happy to be able to join this programme. I have become friends with

students from many countries during the programme. I have also come to know

about Japanese resort, research institutions, culture, tradition, and how Japan has

developed. I could establish very good relations with people from other countries.

The programme was very beneficial to me, because students from ASEAN

countries and Timor-Leste could share the same experiences. Lastly I would like to

thank those people who took good care of us for 10 days. I also thank Japanese

government for giving me an opportunity to visit Japan. (Cambodia, Osaka G)

I think that this programme is really helpful & fun. As all of the ASEAN countries

were able to come together. I would like to thank Japan for giving us this opportunity

and thank all the staff concerned.(Singapore, Hokkaido G)

I would like to thank all the people who have worked very hard for this very

wonderful and insightful programme. Because of this programme, I gained a newer

and a wider perspective from different things and I was able to develop long-lasting

friendships from my fellow ASEAN delegates as well as the Japanese people. I

have learned very much from this programme and I will treasure and use them in

my life.

I hope you would continue this programme and invite as many ASEAN youths as

possible and inspire them so that someday we will be able to form a healthy ASEAN

community.

I wish and I hope I could undergo this programme again because I would really

miss everything that I've gained from this experience. I hope someday I could

payback everyone for the unforgettable experience that they have given me.

Continue inspiring and fighting for the good of all!

*Maraming salamat! * (Philippines, Tokyo G)

-Japan is a nice country. And its people are sweet and caring.

-The Japanese students' English are a bit broken but they are mostly confident in

their words.

-It has given me a great experience and great memories to remember for all of my

life.

-The food during the whole programme was excellent, and the food for us Muslims

were prepared carefully.

-The supervisors make sure they cater to our every need to pray.

-I hope this programme would be extended for more years to come so the younger

generation can also have a chance to join it. (Brunei, Aichi G)

I cannot tell how happy I am to have been able to come to Japan. I have never even

dreamed of being able to have such an opportunity. I hope that if there is another

chance in the future, I would like to participate in this programme again.

If there is a next time that I participate in this programme, I would like to cooperate

with the staff so as to obtain more knowledge and experience.

In this programme, not only had I learned about Japanese culture, custom and

tradition, but also I was able to exchange the culture and customs with students

from other ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste. (Laos, Shimane G)

The programme has been carried out very smoothly, because the preparation for

the programme has been done carefully. Besides, the support was always provided

by the staff when needed. The programme provided was all very interesting. I have

been happy throughout the programme learning about life and culture of Japanese

people. I will never forget the experience shared with friends from other ASEAN

countries. (Malaysia, Miyagi G)

I would like to make good use of this programme for my family, development of my

country, and to deepen the friendship between Japan and other ASEAN

countries.( Myanmar, Ibaraki G)

It was a very valuable programme. Through this programme, I could interact with

students from other ASEAN countries and get to know each other. Also I had

learned how wonderful Japanese people, technology and environment were.

Through homestay, I saw the everyday life of Japanese people, and also felt the

politeness and kindness of Japanese people. The architectures such as museums

and towers are so great, they represent the high level of Japanese technology. Also

my views for other ASEAN countries have changed. Thank you for a wonderful

I am proud that I could join the programme which has broadened my knowledge by

exchanging opinions each other. Although we had differences in religions,

nationalities and cultures, they have not become the obstacles for discussion. The

success of the programme is due to the sense of unity among ASEAN countries

and Timor-Leste. I would like to thank Japanese government for inviting me to

Japan. (Timor-Leste, Okinawa G)

I am happy to have joined this programme. I knew nothing about JENESYS before.

It was very beneficial for me to have participated this programme together with

other Thai students and supervisors. I enjoyed various activities with the students

from 10 countries. We became friends and enjoyed the programme inspite of the

differences in languages and nationalities. I am sure that everybody will talk to

his/her friends and people in his/her community about the experiences in Japan,

such as Japanese culture, Japanese people, new technologies, Japanese schools,

friends from ASEAN countries, and homestay. (Thailand, Hyogo G)
