Where do the music and traditions of our synagogue service come from?

True story: The mother of a soon-to-be Bat Mitzvah inSpringfield,MA,askedforthe“traditional”L’dorVadormelodyfortheceremony.Whenaskedwhichone,shesaid,“Youknow,theoldone,theoneeveryoneknows.”Whenthecantorsangforherawell-knowncomposition,shenodded.ItwasCantorMeirFinkelstein’ssetting–composedintheearly1990’s.

True story: Rabbi Morton Leifman (the first dean of thecantorialschoolandoneofmyteachersattheJewishTheologicalSeminary)wastoldbyanIndianJewishcommunitythattheyhadauniquetuneforAdonOlam.Whenheaskedthem,theystartedsingingthetunefor“SilentNight”!Apparently,theirancestorshadheardthisfromnearbyChristianmissionariesandappliedittotheAdonOlam.

Haveyoueverwonderedwhywedon’tsingtheKolNidreonShabbat?HaveyoueverattendedaFridayeveningserviceandaskedwhy themelodiesaredifferent fromSaturdaymorning?WeallknowthattherearecertainmelodiesfromtheHighHolyDaysthatweloveandwaittohearallyearlong. But,whymustwewait?!Whyarethererestrictionsonthemelodies?IfIlikeatune, andIwanttosingitinaservice, whatisstoppingme? It’s all about Nusah. In theory, nusah means “mode”or “form.”But really, nusah is just the way we do things. Forcantors, ithasbeenthecementthatholdstheservicetogether. When new composers of Jewish music like DebbieFriedman,CraigTaubman, andNoahAronson, tonamea few, introduceus toacomposition thatdoesn’t“fit” into thenusahof theservice, whatdowedo?Doweuseitordoweloseit? There is something very sacred and comforting about hearingthe same L’dorVador melody throughout your life. Cherishedmemoriesofyourchildhoodoryourparentsmaysurface.But,asmentionedabove,thatmelodyisnottheonlyoneoutthere,andforallweknow,itmayhavebeen“borrowed”fromanotherreligionalltogether. We must preserve the old, but we must do so while alsorecognizingthatthe“old”isnotnecessarilytheonly.New ways of doing thingsmightbejustasgoodastheoldways….maybeeven better. There is a time and a place for everything and Icontinuetoseektheperfectcombinationandintegrationofwhatwasandwhatwillbe.Thisyear, asweintroducenewmusicandunfamiliartraditions,Iinviteyoutoexploreandsharewhatfeelsright foryouandwhy.Mayeachofusfind theperfect sacredspacethatweseekandmaythisyearbringhope, peace, andjoytousall.

The Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic

Women by Geraldine Brooks

A WARM WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERSWHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED

As a prizewinning foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Geraldine Brooks spent six years covering the Middle East through wars, insurrections, and the volcanic upheaval of resurgent fundamentalism. Yet for her, headline events were only the backdrop to a less obvious but more enduring drama: the daily life of Muslim women. Nine Parts of Desire is the story of Brooks' intrepid journey toward an understanding of the women behind the veils, and of the often contradictory political, religious, and cultural forces that shape their lives.

A singularly talented writer makes his literary debut with this provocative, soulful, and sometimes hilari-

ous story of a failed journalist asked to do the unthinkable: Forge Holocaust-restitution claims for old Russian Jews in Brooklyn, New York. A Replacement Life is a dark, moving, and beautifully written novel about family, honor, and justice.

THESE EVENTS ARE BEING HELD IN PRIVATE HOMES. EVERYONE ISWELCOME TO ATTEND AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO NEW MEMBERS.

The Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic

Women by Geraldine Brooks

A WARM WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERSWHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED

THE TEMPLE BETH DAVID FAMILY

Daniel & Jennifer Lauer and their sons, Jordie & Spencer

Robert & Carol Summers
