Jillian Harvan CB West High School Grade 12

Talented, individually gifted, and extremely motivated, Jillian Harvan is a guaranteed

success in whatever artistic endeavors she undertakes. She has thrown herself into

endless art programs, opportunities, and never says no to a new opportunity. Jillian is

one of the most talented and dedicated students I have ever had in my 18 years of

teaching! Her maturity surpasses that of a typical senior and is well-mannered, well-

spoken and has fantastic focus and demeanor. She is willing to take creative risks, and

enjoys challenging herself with unique combinations of materials. She is a forward

thinker and always has a reason behind her work. She is a creative and inventive young

lady and truly has an honesty and high level of thinking that sets her apart from her

peers. She has participated in art experiences outside of school that have allowed her

to develop into the strong, young artist that she is today. She has studied at more

pre-college classes than anyone I have ever had, which include Savannah College of Art and Design, Ringling

College of Art and Design, Carnegie Mellon University, University of the Arts and Moore College of Art. Her

dedication and commitment to her study of art will serve her well as she applies them in her future. Jillian has

been a community service chair of our school’s National Art Honor Society for the past two years, has run

numerous art activities, such as an art sticker sale, craft sale, made invitations, artwork, and volunteered

throughout our local community and beyond. Jillian is a Scholastic gold key (1), silver key (2) and honorable

mention (2) recipient from artwork submitted during her Junior year. Jillian takes advantage of every artistic

opportunity that comes her way and is enthusiastic about her artistic endeavors.

Camille Foster-Swartley Tohickon Middle School Grade 8

Acting has transformed a Camille who was once anxious to be in front of a crowd. Bit

by the acting bug at age 10, by a random community audition, she got cast for a

professional production at Bristol Riverside Theater's Enemy of the People. Not knowing

much about theater and file, she has researched and found her own casting calls,

researched roles and advocated for her talent and passion to act. She spent her

afternoons rehearsing for the Town and Country's Holiday show and devotes academic

and after school time to traveling for her role as an amusement park child in the TV show

Orange is the New Black. For a kid who was dogged by anxiety, being on stage brought

out her confidence. She has pursued her passion through professional acting classes and

all the while stays humble in her talents.

Victoria Rabin Butler Elementary School Grade 5

Tori is always doing something creative - she especially likes singing and Irish dancing. She

participates in many activities outside of school whether is practicing for the holiday recital

at the Doylestown conservatory or performing at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia in

the Sounds of Excellence concert. She has incredible talent and was selected in both

concerts to be one of the only performing singers out of all the performers. Over the

summer she did 3 camps at the theater Arts Center - performing in Junie B. Jones, Jungle

Book and Beauty and the Beast. She also loves Irish Dancing and performed at Disney last

summer. Her passion and dedication to performing also included a flash mob

performance with her dance school and being in the junior choir at her synagogue.

TIPS FOR JANUARY’S ASSET #34

CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Think about your family, ethnic background, or cultural heritage and what makes

you proud and gives you comfort. Then explore other cultures’ or countries’

people, art, sayings, food, songs and traditions. Help young people learn about the

backgrounds of others and create a more understanding world by appreciating

differences.

Also try this

In your home and family: Explain to your child how and why her or his name was chosen. Talk about any connections

the name has with your family’s roots and culture—old or new.

In your neighborhood and community: Get to know people who are from a different country or have a different cultur-

al heritage from you. Ask them about their family traditions, celebrations, and other unique aspects of their back-

grounds.

In your school or youth program: Seated in a circle, ask students or participants to talk about their ethnic or family back-

grounds and their favorite celebrations, foods, music, and traditions. Then have them complete this sentence: “If I could

share one thing about my cultural heritage, my gift to you would be . . .”

Support Staff Spotlight: Laura Johnsen

Position: Safety & Security Coordinator

CB West HS

Years in CBSD: 29

CB Cares EF receives $25k from

Hatboro Federal Savings

Linda Roehner, president/CEO presented CB Cares EF with

a $25K donation through the state’s Educational

Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. These funds

allow CB Cares to continue to provide our programs to

our students and families such as the Boomerang, Parent

Positive and Innovative Learning grants. We are very

grateful for the continued support of Hatboro Federal

Savings. For more information about the EITC program

improvement-tax-credit/

This month’s spotlight shines brightly on Laura Johnsen

and her almost three decades of service as CB West’s

Safety & Security Coordinator. Ms. Johnsen absolutely

enjoys interacting with the students and staff on a day

to day basis but she also confirmed that no two days

are EVER like. In her free time she enjoys gardening

and the beach. As a dedicated animal lover, she helps

trap, neuter and release (TNR) feral cats and feeds

those who show up twice a day. Personally she has had

eight TNR cats over the years and finds taking care of

them as a healthy and relaxing distraction from a busy

world. The advice she would give to her younger self

would be “to make the most of each day and not be in

a hurry to grow up too fast! Time does really fly by.”

Good advice for kids of all ages these days. Thank you

Ms. Johnsen for your 29 years of devotion and dedica-

tion to the school community of CB West.
