January 24, 2012—General Meeting
7:00 P.M.—Public Welcome, January Show
Cottesmore Retirement Center 1016 29 St NW, Gig Harbor, WA
January PAL Program—Irina
Francis: Fiber Art!
FIBER ARTIST to Demo at Jan. 24 Meeting
IRINA FRANCIS, owner of HARBOR FIBERS in Gig Harbor,
is a great example of someone who has grown in her transition from seamstress to costume designer, to entrepreneur in
the washed felt arts. She does everything from buying raw wool, to dyeing it, to creating intriguing combinations of the
pressed felt with other fabrics, including silk. Her products range from utilitarian hats, to fantastic multi-material scarves,
to wall pieces. She teaches classes and workshops at her location.
Irina is a recent fine arts graduate of P.L.U and is one of the more innovative fiber artists in her field. She will demon-
strate the process she uses and its application to wall art.*(Think buckets of water! Beautiful colors and fibers!)
In the meantime, visit her shop at 7700 Pioneer Way, Suite 103. Her wearable art has an
international flair. You can see examples of her creations on ETSY.COM and her
yarns at www.etsy.com/shop/HarborFibers.
I trust that her use of color and 3-D sense of design can inform artists who use other mediums.
(Thank you, Myrna Binion, for suggesting this artist. Thank you, Barbara Field, one of 3 program helpers for visiting
Irina in her shop, and writing a report, which I used practically verbatim, above*. Other program assistants are: Dee
Gilliam Barrett and Emily Porter.)
General Meeting: January 24, 2012, next meeting, at Cottesmore Retirement Center. See web page or post card for directions. 1016 29 St NW, Gig Harbor, WA

Presidents Message: President’s January Message: Happy New Year!
A new year brings renewed hope and a sense of purpose to our lives. Looking back
on where PAL has been and where it is going has made me pause and think of all
that has transpired and look to the future to see where it is we want to be. This
year as an artist, it is one thing to have my needs met: to paint, to learn new skills
and to commune with fellow artists. But even beyond my personal needs, I see art
as a powerful tool. It enriches our lives and expresses our culture. It creates com-
munity, empowers those who embrace it and brings people together. Finally art
becomes an economic driver of the small businesses and institutions in our com-
munity. I want to see PAL being a part of those processes this year and in the future.
Secondly and as important: I am pleased to announce that the PAL Board was officially voted in
at the December meeting and the new bylaws were finally passed at the end of December with an
80% vote required by mail. We have Anne Knapp to thank for doggedly pursuing every last proxy vote until the
bylaws passed. We now can now post official notices and conduct votes by email. We updated our committees
and added Festival and Regional Open Show Committees. We expanded the geographic area we serve to Kitsap
and Pierce County. Our fiscal year is now from January 1st to December 31st and we can pass measures with a ma-
jority vote of 40 members or 25% of the membership, whichever is less. This will make our organization more
efficient and up to speed in the digital era. Thank you to all who participated in rewriting the bylaws and han-
dling the election and proxy votes. Thanks to John Neiswender, husband of our member Robin Neiswender who
was a consultant and labored intensively and advised us on our election and the rewrite our bylaws: this was a
labor of love.
Finally I am looking forward to the PAL programs and events that are already taking shape for
2012. Our January members’ juried show “Warmth” at Kimball Gallery is a demonstration of PAL
working in the community to create opportunities for our artists. The reception and awards on January
15th 2-4pm should be wonderful. Be sure to come and enjoy the art and camaraderie. Other member shows are
being planned for July and October. So get those paintings ready! (Our next screening will be February
28th.) I look forward to our wonderful schedule of programs: This month Irina Francis will demonstrate
fiber arts felting: fiber art is an evolving and interesting new art medium: what an interesting demo! In Feb-
ruary we will be having a demonstration of abstract art by a visiting Chinese Artist Bian Hong who
has studied calligraphy since she was a child and now incorporates that into abstract painting . Judy Buskirk and
other PAL members have done a great job and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Anne Knapp is continuing to work with the members of GHACA (Gig Harbor Arts Center Alliance,) and
the community to create a nonprofit arts center for the region. I look forward to hearing more about their pro-
gress on this amazing center. It will be so wonderful to have an actual place for our workshops, events and most
of all our art. Christy and Russ Camerer have again committed to running the Summer Art Festival in July. I
am sure we will have a success again with their expertise and energy. The inclusion of family friendly events and
activities has really been a hit and I expect it will again be a wonderful event for the artists and art aficionados.
Jeni Wook and Lynn Guenard are working on the Open Juried Regional Show this year. They are going to
include 3-D art in the show and are in the process of setting up a juror, workshop and exhibit for August.
2012 Promises to be a very rich and fulfilling year at PAL. If you haven’t rejoined PAL yet, we hope you will: membership is down to 129 members. Time is a wasting! Send your ($35) membership checks to Debbie Dorn and if you have a new email address let her know at [email protected],

“Oh, the weather outside is frightful……”
WEATHER REPORT: PREPARE FOR WARMTH IN JANUARY January may be one of the coldest months of the year around here, but we're expecting a bit of win-ter relief for anyone viewing our upcoming show at Kimball's, January 9 to February 6, 2012. The show will be titled "Warmth," and all entries must in some way be reflective of that title. Subject, col-or, mood ... there are as many ways to interpret the word "Warmth" as there are artists. Having a theme for the show is a way to provide a common thread that runs through all the entries and to
give viewers a lens through which to look at and consider the entries. It also gives us a hook by which to mar-
ket the show. If the name or theme of a show sparks an interest in people who are not accustomed to looking
at art, they might tend to at least look at the entries and ask themselves how a piece relates to the theme, or
what the artists might have had in mind when they created them. We think it should be an interesting show, and have decided to offer an additional award for the entry that (in the judge's opinion) best reflects "Warmth." So as the temperature drops and the days shorten, pay attention to what warms your body and your spirits, and use it as inspiration for your entry into the January show. Remember that you must have been screened in the medium of your entry prior to the show. The next screening is not until Febru-ary, so only currently-screened mediums are acceptable. Work can be for sale, and Kimball's staff handles any sales. They take 10% plus another 3% if the transaction is handled with a credit card, so price your work accordingly. Your piece does not have to be for sale ... but we have had sales from past shows at Kimball's! One entry per artist, and the maximum size of the piece's outside edges - including the frame - is 24" x 36". Details of the show: Drop off entries: Monday, January 9, 1pm-3pm Show dates: January 9 - February 6, 2012 Pick up entries: Monday, February 6, 1pm-3pm Entry fee: $10.00, to be paid at time of drop-off by cash or check Reception: Sunday, January 15, 2012, 2pm-4pm Judge: Barbara Fugate
Please Note: I am in charge of emailing people and asking them to bring their art to share at a meeting. Have people just send me their email. I will try to include everyone in the space of the year.

Reminder:
Please submit articles or information for the newslet-ter before your event happens. For instance, if you have a show starting on 3 March, and the newsletter for March doesn’t come out till 10 March, your event will not have the publicity you want. Your information needs to be in to me the month before, so it can be put in the previous month’s information (for this example, the information would need to be in by the February deadline, 7 Feb. I am very unhappy when a great event is missed because I got it too late to publish. Deadline
to me is the 7th of each month. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU! Please??

The Proctor Art Gallery has an opening for another Artist. The owner, Carolyn Burt, has heard that we have many talented artists. There are openings for January. They are located at 3811 N. 26th Street in the Proc-tor District of the North end of Tacoma. We are open 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday – Saturday and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday. Our web site is www.proctorartgallery.com. I am enclosing the notice I put on the TacomaList serve as it has more details. You can use what you would like from that. We do have an application process and form that I can e-mail artists if they are interest-ed. In the gallery we have an Artists’ Association and a screen-ing committee. While I own the gallery, the artists are a big part and I allow them to screen applicants and make other decisions in the gallery. It is a wonderful group of talented artists. We hate to lose any of them, but lives change, so we will have one or two openings for both 2-d and 3-d artists.
