Community Assistant Neighborhood Map

Above is the 2013-2014 Community Assistant coverage map. Be sure to look for your CAs in your neighborhood. If you have questions or concerns about any aspect of living off campus, such as searching for a new property,

landlord/tenant concerns, roommate issues, or environmental problems, feel free to find your neighborhood CA on this map, and contact them using their contact information on the first page of this newsletter.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY ASSISTANT? WHAT CAN THEY DO FOR ME AND WHAT CAN I DO FOR THEM?

The Community Assistant program is a network of students who live off campus and serve as liaisons between the university and off-campus students, acting as a resource for residents, disseminating information, helping solve problems, educating regarding rights and responsibilities, and coordinating services for students within a designated neighborhood. Many of you are living off campus for the first time so CA’s will distribute important information about how to be a good neighbor and how to successfully live off campus. As you transition from the OU Campus to the broader Athens Community, it is important for you to remember to give back to the community you live in and we provide you with opportunities to do so. CA’s will be coming to your door every two weeks to check in but please feel free to contact your CA’s if you encounter any problems.

Communtiy Assitants can provide you with information that you may not know and with resources to help solve your problems. They can show you a side of Athens you may not know and provide you with opportunities you have never come across. CA’s are also required to do 2 service projects and 1 social projefct a semester and you are invited and encouraged to attend. These projects could provide you with service hours, make you feel connected to the larger community, and help you give back. The Athens Community is always in need of help so we might be collecting donations or asking for a helping hand so please be open to volunteering. Social projects are an opportunity for you to try new things and socialize with your neighbors and CA’s. Even though you may be here for only 4 years, we encourage you to leave behind a stronger community than when you came.

Top 4 Things To Do in Athens During the Winter Time

BY: ROBERT BURKE

Ice SkatingWhat could be a better way to get out and about this winter than enjoying this ancient Nordic tradition? For only $3.50 per session (to pay for skate rentals, OU Students can enjoy the fact that usual $3-4 extra charge a session is waived with a valid OU ID) you can enjoy a day out at Bird Arena. Even if you don’t know how to skate, it never hurts to try something new!

The Fun BarnIt is a mystery why the inventor of the $4.00 movie ticket hasn’t been shortlisted for the Nobel Peace Prize yet. And there is no catch or gimmicks! Just four dollars for a ticket to all the latest movie releases. With cheap concessions to boot, what could be a better way to spend $4?

Watching a show at Donkey CoffeeDespite being a great place to enjoy a hot drink on a cold day, Donkey Coffee and Espresso also plays host to regular performances from local artists. With a ‘open stage’ style show every sunday at 8:00pm and numerous other special events (information for which can be found at donkeycoffee.com ) Donkey Coffee is well worth the visit this winter season.

Walk PuppiesMissing your favorite four legged friend from home? The Athens County Dog Shelter is always accepting volunteers to walk the dogs that are currently residing in the shelter. Although you might be correct in thinking this is a activity that may be preferable in warmer weather, dogs do need exercising all year around! Plus you will be performing valuable community service. All you need to do to be able to start volunteering is fill out a form and turn it in beforehand to the shelter (call 740-593-5415 for more information on this).

empty bottle.Step 2

Keep the string tied and soak it in lighter fluid.Step 3

Put the string back on the bottle and hold it horizontally. Light the sting rotating the bottle so the
