and Gentlemen!

Things are getting back

into full swing around here

at the tennis centers. It is

quiet and cold so far, well

this is Texas so it’s actually

quiet, hot, cold, raining,

sunny, etc…

Some of you wonder what

we do all the live long day

up until after school

academy gets started up.

What can be said by the

men and woman hanging

around here is that they

have their “days”. So far

this week the office tasks

have included chores such

as going through the dead

and good balls in the bas-

kets. Along with that

comes throwing the dead

balls out, then the fun task

of opening new cans of ten-

nis balls (about 100+ cans)

without cutting open any

hands. Reports say that no

hands were sliced open, but

one coach could not feel his/

her hands after testing for

dead and good tennis balls.

When the coaches are just

hanging out in the office

they are usually doing one

Our break point of the month concerns the mental component of the game. A phrase

that we share with players is, “if you can get things right in your head, than tennis

will take care of itself.” Getting things right in your head requires self-discipline, hard

work and dedication. The mental part of the game comprises up to 90% of the game,

dia pages frequently.

Nadal’s comeback, and the new rival-

ry of Andy Murray and Novak

Djokovic! Will Novak defend his title

from last year? Or will Andy Murray

continue his dominance from 2016? Or

maybe we will finally have an Ameri-

can break through the ranks and win

a few surprising matches! I am ex-

tremely excited to see how the year

unfolds and I hope you are too!

Brien’s Baseline consists of tennis

stories, new products in the tennis

world such as racquets and string,

and tennis outside of the district such

tennis season brings a lot of promising

storylines such as Federer and

This section will be dedicated to the

players who meet the following crite-

ria each month:

Academic= A/B Grade average in

school

Work ethic and attitude in After

School Academies

Tournament Results= Semifinals or

better in the main draw of any tour-

nament participated in.

*NOTE: Meeting 1 of 3 or 2 of 3 of

these requirements does not earn you

recognition. The coaches here want to

challenge you to excel at everything

you can control. Social life is never a

bad thing, but you cannot control the

people who come in and out of your

life.

Commit yourself to excelling at what

you can control, we cannot be GREAT

at everything we do, so be willing to

sacrifice a lack of greatness in some

areas of life.

As always, be respectful and mindful

of others on your journey.

According to Steve Smith, 15 minutes

hitting with the backboard is equiva-

lent to an hour of practice.

Here’s the drill! Grab your head-

phones or a speaker, make up a

playlist of about 10 songs you enjoy

working out to. Grab 2-3 DEAD ten-

nis balls. Make sure you warm-up

properly before starting.

Now lets get started! Every song is

ONE STROKE, so the first song you

This section will be drills that players

can perform on their own time, with a

partner, or even in practice.

Feel free to share this with friends,

coaches, or whomever you may please.

For this month’s drill I will keep it

simple, lets go with everyone’s ever

loving and faithful backboard this

month. I know you’re rolling your eyes

right now, but hear me out the back-

board is the best hitting partner there

is!

hear can be dedicated to forehands

against the wall, the next one is back-

hands, forehand volley, backhand vol-

ley, forehand slice, backhand slice,

and dedicate 2 songs for serving.

If you want a challenge pick a long

song, about 5 minutes at least and

try to alternate forehand and back-

hands without failure for the whole

song.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU! COMPETE!

Game Changer Scholars

Drills with Skylar

pline will be challenged: What’s serv-

ing percentage like? How many un-

forced errors are you making? Are you

focused on your footwork more than

your technique in matches?

Off court challenges will include chal-

lenging the words that come out of

your mouth, how you treat others,

how you treat yourself, and maturity

in other areas of life.

The way Chelsea’s Challenge will

work is each month Coach Chelsea

will give the readers and players a

challenge for themselves on and off

the court.

On court challenge could be some-

thing challenging your mentality:

How positive can you be? How is your

composure? Do you have a plan?
