Research shows that reading with your child—not to him/her—greatly increases children’s language and literacy and puts them on a path to grade level reading.

DATE:      Thursday, March 1, 2018 TIME:    6:00‐8:00 PM LOCATION:    Gearing Elementary School          Admission:  FREE!  All elementary students from across the district and their families are welcome!  Parents must accompany their children to the event.

The new year brings new resolutions! Being on time is an important habit to practice and instill in children early in life. School begins promptly at 8:45 a.m. Students are expected to be in the classroom when the bell rings. Those students who arrive late are shortchanged of their opportunity to organize their desk and materials and to participate in opening exercises. Arriving late disrupts the classroom. All students who arrive after 8:45 a.m. must first report to the office for a admit to class. Parents are required to sign their child in at the office. Your help and cooperation in making certain that your children arrive on time is greatly appreciated. It’s a great new year’s goal. BE ON TIME!

It’s Time to Bundle Up!Thank you for making sure your child is dressed for outdoors.  Outdoor recess provides fresh air and exercise even in the cooler weather.  All students participate in outdoor recess each day unless the temperature and/or wind chill drops below zero.  Outer garments worn at school must adhere to the school dress code.  Thank you for your help in making sure your child wears his/her boots, coat, scarf, mittens/gloves and snow pants.   A doctor’s note is required for a child to be excused from outdoor recess.

Build‐A‐Book – January 25, 2018 6:30 ‐7:30 PM – Gearing Gym A make and take activity for you and your child to enjoy literacy in a unique way.

It’s time to build a very special, one‐of‐a‐kind book.  Using craft materials plus a blank wire bound book, you’ll enjoy making a book (and a memory) you’ll keep forever!

BIRTHDAY OBSERVANCES Students often like to celebrate their birthday by bringing  a treat to share with the class.  Before bringing a treat to school please FIRST contact your child’s teacher.

Birthday treats should be arranged in advance with the classroom teacher to determine an appropriate date and time.  All treats must be NUT FREE AND SESAME SEED FREE.  Treats  that do not meet the NUT FREE/SESAME SEED FREE restrictions will not be distributed.

In order to maintain the classroom instructional environment, floral arrangements and balloon bouquets should be sent to student’s home rather than to the classroom.

We’re having a BOX TOP$ CONTEST!   For the entire month of January, we’ll be collecting BOX TOP$.  Each one earns money for our school.   Ask your family and friends to save them for you as well.

The classroom that submits the most BOX TOP$ from January 8th ‐31st will earn one hour on the rolling video  game truck.  Begin saving now!

Congratulations! Our Gearing PTO recently recognized the top two students, Lara Ritchie and Kirk Ritchie, who contributed the most donations to the PTO’s Alternative Fund Raiser.  Recognition was also given to the classroom of Ms. D’Andrea that raised the most dollars.  Awesome!

FOURTHGRADERISMAKINGA“PAWS”ITIVEDIFFERENCE!

Fourth grader, Aleena Goff, was recently selected to be a KID HERO.  For five years, Aleena has asked her friends to bring dog and cat toys for her birthday party instead of presents for herself.  For three years when she lived in California, she gathered items and raised money for the local humane society.  When she moved to Michigan, she wanted to continue her fundraiser.  Her campaign project now supports the Blue Water Humane Society.  For her efforts and selection as a KID HERO, Aleena was given $1,000 to fund her campaign.  Great job, Aleena!  For more information about her campaign go to www.gofundme.com/makeapawsitivediffernnce.

PTO Meeting Tuesday

January 23rd 7:00 PM

LINK up for Lunch Gearing is looking for adults to “LINK up for Lunch”.  As part of the LINK program, we are pairing students to eat lunch with an adult once a week.  Adults from the community can pick what days/times work best for them to come and have lunch with an identified student.  Our hope is for both adults and students to establish strong relationships with each other.  A school lunch will be provided for the adults if they choose or they can bring their own lunch.  Adults will also  be asked to play games, do crafts or various activities with their specific student during the 35‐minute lunch period.

Help make an important difference in the life of a child.

Be a Mentor; Be the Difference.

For more information about how YOU or your business can become a “Link‐Up for Lunch Mentor”, please contact Lisa Koehn, School Social Worker at (810) 676‐1416 or email [email protected].

SPARKLE WITH SCHOOL SPIRIT

Each month, Gearing students have the opportunity to be

recognized for “SPARKLE WITH SCHOOL SPIRIT”. Students are randomly selected from staff nominations for demonstrating the social skill of the month.  This month we’re recognizing students who demonstrate problem solving.
