Georgia • January — June 20192

Athletes often train in every direction: forward, backward, side-to-side, and even up and down to prepare for the game ahead. Their training program helps anticipate any curveball their opponent might throw their way. For long-term Kaiser Permanente member Rhonda Davis, her training isn’t really any different from athletes out on the field.

As a mother, wife, and woman driven by her career at the police department, Rhonda is often pulled in many directions throughout the day. However, she still makes time to meal prep and train with her instructors throughout the week.

Health is at the top of her mind these days. The reason? One year ago, Rhonda was 48 pounds heavier, wore clothes 6 times her current size, and was at serious risk for diabetes.

When an upset stomach and overall fatigue kept her from enjoying the food and fellowship at a family dinner, Rhonda knew she needed to take control of her health. A long-time friend and fellow Kaiser Permanente member, Brenda, suggested that Rhonda look into the class offerings at the Kaiser Permanente Panola Medical Center. After all, Brenda was an avid participant in the group fitness classes there and spoke highly of the diabetes prevention class.

Little did she know that this class would be her game changer. Rhonda was greeted by instructor Melanie Baker, an influential coach who walked Rhonda through training for the sport of life. The goal of the class was clear: to prevent diabetes by lowering A1c levels. The strategy? Healthy eating and exercise. Simple, right? Not so much.

Admittedly, Rhonda wasn’t all-in at first. She knew the class was important but wasn’t sure she had the discipline to monitor her diet so closely. But eventually, after a few months in the class, something clicked. She realized it wasn’t just her. She’d found her ‘team’ and looked forward to the classes where they would share, console, and challenge each other on their way to winning results. She found herself attending other classes, including fitness classes lead by Carla Fields, her favorite instructor. Rhonda actually started looking forward to the weekly weigh-ins and sessions—something she never expected.

Hesitant at first, Rhonda picked up the latest issue of Healthy Living and read through the classes. She recalled that recent bloodwork had shown signs of prediabetes, so she decided to sign up for the National Diabetes Prevention Program (see Page 40).†

“Before this class, I was letting food control me instead of me controlling food,” Rhonda explained. “This class taught me to be accountable for what I eat; you don’t have to deprive yourself of things you enjoy eating. The strategies I learned in this class were instrumental in my success.”

After the year-long program, Rhonda was able to lower her A1c levels from 5.7 to 5.2. She lost nearly 50 pounds and went down six pants sizes. The multi-directional health training helped her reduce her risk for diabetes significantly. Rhonda’s personal doctor, Dr. Faye Riley, noticed a difference at her yearly physical.

“I was impressed at Rhonda’s biometrics when she came in with her yearly physical,” Dr. Riley said. “Her risk factors for diabetes had lowered significantly. Not only did Rhonda improve her health, but she has maintained her results. Maintenance is key for any training program.”

Today, Rhonda is an advocate for training for the sport of life with the help of Kaiser Permanente’s Healthy Living classes. So much that her family members have seen improvements in their own health. Rhonda’s husband has lost weight and stepped up his exercise routine while her college-age daughter has learned the art of healthy cooking in her dorm. Even Rhonda’s son loves the meals she prepares for the family. “This class has truly been an eye opener, and if I can do it, anyone can. If you are ready to improve your health, this program works. By incorporating all the knowledge I gained from the class, I am in the game and winning.”

1. Fuel Your Body Plan and prepare your meals. Change out any white breads or pastas to whole grain. Try vegetables you haven’t eaten before. You can make the things you like to eat healthier by controlling the ingredients and portion sizes.

2. Hydrate Drinking water throughout the day will help your body energize muscles and control caloric intake. Keep a reusable water bottle handy!

3. Take Fitness Classes Try taking a Kaiser Permanente group fitness class. I look forward to them every week. I am pushed to levels that I never thought I could reach by working out in a group.

HEALTHTIP

Stop, find some quiet head space, and breathe deeply. This basic act delivers a powerful health punch, including:• Subduing the body’s stress response.

Focusing on breathing is at the core of many relaxation techniques.

• Positively affecting the body. Your heart, brain, digestion, and yes, even immune system will benefit.

• Promoting better sleep. Soothing your mind is one of the biggest challenges to getting quality sleep. Deep breathing can help you tune out the day’s noise.

Improving Your SleepCOST: $0

You Must Pre-Register — Non-members welcome*

There are no easy or instant cures for chronic insomnia. Overcoming insomnia involves making changes in your daily behavior. Many people abandon a behavioral technique after two or three nights if it doesn’t produce an immediate change in their sleep. This course will require time, patience, and persistence. Although the changes resulting from behavioral interventions will take longer than just taking a pill, they will also last longer. These changes are more enduring, more effective, and safer than sleep medications.

Georgia • January — June 201922

As we dive into 2019, we are reminded that we are in a relentless pursuit of self-improvement. Like athletes, we set goals and game plans for the new year. Maybe your goal this year is to start exercising more to improve your heart health. Maybe it’s being more mindful of what you fuel yourbody with. Maybe it’s practicing self-care more often. The key to a New Year’s resolution is that it is specific and has a clear action plan.

Making a Game PlanKeep your goal short and measurableInstead of the goal being “lose weight this year,” change it to “run an eight-minute mile by July 1st.”

In doing so, you have a clear goaland time frame for completion. Your action plan is now to train for the eight minute mile, shifting the goal to athletic performance. If you embrace the process, results will come.

The goal should serve youNew Year’s Resolutions often come from what we hear from family and friends. Make sure that the goal serves you and comes from how you want to improve, not how others think you should. It should serve your mind, body, and spirit.

Be ready for changeAre you willing to sacrifice an hour on the couch for an hour in the mind and body studio? Figure out what is achievable given your time

throughout the day and adjust your goal. Where you invest your time, you invest your life.

Finishing the DrillFind your teamWe go so much further together than we ever would alone. Find someone to hold you accountable. That could be a friend, family member, or your Kaiser Permanente care team. A team is there to support you and to help push you in the right direction.

Take one of the Healthy Living classes in this catalogue with one of your friends. Fill your life with like-minded people who mesh well with your goals and aspirations. Download a fitness app like FitBit that connects you to a community of like-minded people.

Practice self-loveSome days, you are going to feel like you have everything under control. Some days, you won’t. Treat yourself with the same compassion on either day. If your goal begins to feel like a burden, take some time to reset and refocus. You’re playing the long game here… remember that.

Be your own coachAt the end of the day, achieving your goal comes down to the person who looks back at you in the mirror. Be your own coach. Set calendar reminders each week to bring your goal to the top of your mind. Check in with yourself. The thoughts and feelings that you had when making the goal should still be there when executing your plan.

Making a resolution is easy to do, but keeping it is the challenge. What happens after the first few weeks of January? Is your game plan still in place? Many folks often lose sight of the mindful eating, the gym classes, and the behaviors they set out to keep by the end of January. In fact, one third of resolutions won’t make it into the first week of February.*

So, be a game changer this year. Here’s how to finish the drill and keep your New Year’s resolutions.

If you have prediabetes or believe you may be at risk for developing diabetes and are overweight, there is good news for you. There are changes you can start making now to help prevent diabetes. The National DPP, based on research from the National Institutes of Health, shares the information and skills you need. It has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent and even more in people who are 60 and older!

The National DPP is a proven, intensive, lifestyle program that teaches participants how to build their plan to prevent diabetes. It is designed to help break down behaviors into small, manageable steps. Participants will be in a small group with other people who are also changing their routines to prevent diabetes.

• A 12-month, group-based program with 16 one-hour weekly sessions for the first four months, followed by four months of bi-weekly sessions, and once-per-month sessions for the last four months; designed to be interactive and fun!

• Topics include healthy eating, weight loss, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, problem solving, motivation, and long-term maintenance of healthy lifestyle changes.

• Weekly weigh-ins and tracking food intake and activity levels are part of this program.

• It is led by a trained lifestyle coach who facilitates this small group of people with similar goals. The smaller class size means there will be opportunities to hear, learn, and share with others what works best.
