Bite of Bread from Bob Someone left this article on my desk a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was appropriate.

God Bless, Pastor Bob Imagine that you had won the following prize:

Each morning your bank deposits $86,400 in your bank account. However, this prize has rules.

The first set of rules would be: 1) Everything that you didn’t spend during each day

would be taken away from you. 2) You may not simply transfer money into some

other account. You may only spend it. 3) Each morning upon awakening, the bank deposits

another $86,400 for that day.

The second set of rules: 1) The bank can end the game without warning. 2) It can close the account in an instant and you will

not receive a new one.

What would you do? Would you buy anything and everything you wanted? Not only for yourself, but for all the people in your life. Maybe even for people you don’t know? Would try to spend every single cent, every day?

Actually, this game is reality, but not with money! The magical bank is TIME!

Each morning we awaken and receive 84,600 seconds as a gift of life, and when the day is done, any remaining time is gone and not credited to us. What we haven’t lived up to that day is lost forever.

So, what will YOU do with your 86,400 seconds? Think about that and always think of this: Enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than we think. Take good care of yourself and enjoy life. Live each day to the fullest, be kind to one another, and be forgiving. Harbor a positive attitude and always be the first to smile.

Here’s wishing you a wonderful, beautiful day, make each second count!

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth Flurries from Chris Over the past week I thought about the foundational texts and stories of the Bible that are important for all Christians to know. I began to make a list of my top 10 stories of the Bible, trying to include different themes that are present in the Old and New Testa-ment. My original list went as follows; the stories of Creation in Genesis, the call of Isaiah, the Exodus story, Sermon on the Mount, Birth of Jesus, Tempta-tion of Jesus, the Passion narratives, Resurrection, and finally the flood story.

After I made this list I began listening to a podcast of Walter Brueggemann talking with Krista Tippett about his works with the Old Testament. One of the things that Brueggemann said struck me as profound. He indicated that we have forgotten the book of Lamentations, the lament texts where the people cried out in response to disaster, death, loss, and great pain. This struck me in part because we find ourselves wrapping up Christmas and New Year’s celebrations where everyone is expected to be happy, but what about those struggling with pain and loss through the holiday season?

In response to the question of “what scriptures or stories do I find important to know” the youth and I will be entering into a series of foundational scrip-tures for our faith over the next several Sundays. Even though I have my list I would ask you to come up with a list and share it with me either by email, or drop your list in my box at the church. Along with your list I would encourage you to think about what makes those texts stand out from the rest.

Peace, Chris Snow

A Little Light from Laurie HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope your Christmas was wonderful and you carry that sparkle through the new year. If you are having a hard time deciding which resolution you could make, the Children's Ministries at First Christian Church has some ideas.

Studies show that most Christians make their commit-ment to Jesus when they are young. Jesus says to come as a child. We love to see families make Jesus a prior-ity in their lives and give their children the strong foundation they need as they face life's challenges, and better yet... to secure their future. Reading the Bible together, praying as a family and attending church are just a few ways you can make that commitment this year. Start a good habit with your children.

Are you looking for a way to share your blessings this year? We have many ways you can share your gifts and talents. Teaching your children about the impor-tance of supporting the church financially is very important because it helps towards the many outreach programs we support, but it also helps pay the bills. If you enjoy children, we have many children's ministry opportunities throughout the year, including being a Sunday School teacher. We have Sunday School rotations starting soon and are looking for teachers for 2-week commitments. We also need teachers to learn the Children's church program. Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Lenten Faire. If working directly with children isn't your thing, we would love help in the planning, preparations, recruiting help, decorating or any other hands on work that goes into each of these events.

I would like to thank Nancy Stebbins once again for being our team leader for the last three years. You will continue to see her assisting with various chil-dren's activities. The new Children’s chairpersons are Bill & Diane Wilkson! Please give Nancy, Bill and Diane a big hug when you see them as a thank you for their commitment to our children.

If there is any way we can help you solve your New Year's resolution dilemmas, please let Bill, Diane, or me know, and we will point you in the right direction. May this be a joyous year for you and your family filled with many blessings!

Happy New Year, Laurie

Recycle your Christmas Cards for a Good Cause The children at St. Jude’s ranch in Boulder City, Nevada collect greeting cards and turn them into new cards that are sold in their gift shop. Only the front of the cards are used. Due to copyrights they cannot accept cards from Hallmark, Disney or American Greetings.

Through January a box for the card fronts is at the Information Center in the Narthex.

Let’s make this an all church effort, as yet another way to spread God’s love through our recycling efforts. You may call Judy Dyer if you have any questions.
